The Cavaliers were decisive and intentional in the areas they wanted to address in free agency, writes Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com (subscriber link). As Fedor previously outlined, bringing back Ricky Rubio was always the top priority in early free agency, but because Rubio is expected to miss at least the first few months of next season while recovering from a torn ACL, the Cavs needed to bring in a second backup point guard to fill in for a while, which is why they agreed to a deal with Raul Neto.
Rubio has been rehabbing in Spain, but sources tell Fedor that the point guard is expected to travel to Cleveland shortly after his signing becomes official so his progress can be checked by team doctors. Adding two backups point guards instead of one creates a roster crunch for the Cavaliers, as after reaching a deal with backup center Robin Lopez, the team will have 15 players under contract with Collin Sexton still a restricted free agent.
Cleveland expects Rubio’s on-court impact could be limited in the first year of his deal, per Fedor, which is why the Cavs brought him back on a three-year contract, with the third year being partially guaranteed. A sign-and-trade with Indiana to free up a roster spot and money remains an option, according to Fedor, who points to Dylan Windler and Cedi Osman as players who could be on the move — if the Pacers are interested.
As for Sexton, sources tell Fedor that the Cavs are determined to stay below the luxury tax line — they’re currently about $15MM below — and view Sexton as worthy of a deal that would pay him in the low-to-mid teens annually. However, despite positive developments in recent negotiations, sources tell Fedor that Sexton wants “starting guard money with an annual salary that starts with a 2, not a 1.”
“He has no market,” an opposing executive told Cleveland.com.
Fedor says the negotiations might take a while, and Sexton accepting his $7.2MM qualifying offer in an attempt to rebuild his value and reach unrestricted free agency in 2023 is a real possibility. Sources also tell Fedor that Darius Garland‘s five-year max extension with the Cavaliers is a straight five-year deal with no player option in the fifth season.
Here’s more from the Central Division:
- Zach LaVine outperformed his previous two contracts (rookie contract and then a four-year, $78MM deal that he just completed), but his new five-year max deal with the Bulls will be measured by the team’s postseason performance, not his individual statistics, according to Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic.
- In a couple of stories for NBC Sports Chicago, Rob Schaefer explores how impending free agent acquisitions Andre Drummond and Goran Dragic can help the Bulls. Schaefer notes that Drummond isn’t an All-Star-caliber player anymore, but he should still be a marginal upgrade over last season’s backup centers, especially on the boards. As for Dragic, Schaefer views the veteran guard as a low-risk insurance policy for Lonzo Ball, since Dragic is signed to a minimum contract.
- Don’t expect Lance Stephenson to re-sign with the Pacers anytime soon, per Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files (Twitter link). Once Indiana’s trade with Boston is complete, the Pacers will have 19 players under contract for next season, so they’ll have to figure out how to trim the roster before anything happens with Stephenson — assuming they want him back.
According to Chris Fedor’s insider text subscription I have, he says that the Cavs believe that they have many options to still creating roster room for Collin. He also said that there is a positive dialogue between both sides, and that the Cavs (as well as Sexton) really want him back. Fedor sent that out only about two hours ago so it is an up-to-date update.
Honestly though I wouldn’t be surprised if Collin just accepts the QO. He knows he is talented and I understand why he thinks he deserves to get paid. So I could see him betting on himself.
Man. He’s still getting paid. Cle gonna give him a 4yr 60mil deal, or 5yr 75mil.
Sexton & Cle promoted him as the future but the Wins weren’t there. The ball movement wasn’t there. The Defense ain’t there. 3pt shooting 25% thru 11gms wasn’t there..
Then a major injury.. I don’t see any team giving Sexton max let alone 20mil a yr per
Advanced analytics show his value & desperate teams are not moving heaven & earth to sign him even at 20mil.
Even if he was UFA, teams aren’t gonna pay him 5yr 100mil.
His best case, is take your bag 4yr 60mil. Play & Earn your Max like DG did
A 1yr QO is huge mistake. If injury happens again then he be playing for half the QO like D Schroeder. At 6mil PER..
Remember he turned down 4yr 72mil or 80mil.
Sexton would be idiotic to not agree to terms around 15mil per which u know Cle can do. Sign 3yr 45mil. U need to prove it that ur a 20mil guy.
Improve Def, contribute to Winning & better 3pt shooting.
Sexton is a ball stopper. Dribbles too much, needs ball in hand. Not a c & s guy at all.
He’s a 6 1 SG… he’s not a pg…
But 4 all his neg. He can get buckets. CLE PAYS HIM LU DORT type $$ & if Sexton outplayed contract then he gets max at age 27. He’s only 23..
Look at Lavine..
Young man take that Guaranteed $$
That $8mil QO is a huge Gamble. Don’t be greedy. If teams seen u as a max guy, they would have signed u by now. Word is no1 showing any interest at all. Reminds me of Marcus Smart. Then Smart begged 4 that $$ back bc no1 offered a deal.
If Mavs best offer for u is Davis Bertans & a pick…
Lol you aren’t a 20mil guy atm.ATM..
I think u could be a 25mil type of player but need improve in winning bball.
Better 3pt %%
Plus off serious injury..
Don’t feel too bad he’s still getting 5yr $80mil range…
@Sex
Sexton just saw fellow Klutch client Miles Bridges bet on himself, have a great year and then fumble the bag. Obviously he can likely control himself better than Miles but considering he just came off of surgery I think he’d sign a deal. And I could see Cleveland bending slightly and offering him a very fair deal either short or long term. 2/$40 or 4/$80. Cavs were 25th in scoring. We need his skill set at the SG spot.
Well he’s talked about wanting to be in Cle & hope he ain’t getting bad advice…
From his agent, who always has LeBron I Teresa’s 1st…
He prob shouldn’t be allowed to be agent BC tampering & playing favs to LAL.
If Sextonbeing told take QO & next yr u get the max… it makes no sense..
No1 paying him max.
Mins will be down in Cle so less opportunities.
Every yr a newer shinier cheaper rookie is getting spot over u..
Sexton off serious injury hopefully ain’t jealous. If he is cle prob just waits to move him. Prib at deadline NC teams get desperate..
Personally I love sexton as 6th man. It is what it is. He can take 4yr 60mil & get 25mil + at age 27 if he earns it.
Injury sucks but 25% from 3pt hurts bad. Knock was always shooting 3pt.
Sexton is a career 38% shooter from 3. Shot 37% the year before he got hurt. Last years numbers really don’t mean anything because it was such a small sample size.
@SexLandOkoMobLen
Thank you.
Agreed. I see Sexton accepting the QO and then, seek a big payday next season because of his stellar performance this year. Smart on his part.
Offer Sexton 5 years/$68-72 million, and I think he takes it. It’s an overpay, but if he improves in certain areas, he can mostly live up to it, and it’s more than he’s going to get otherwise
Osman would be a tough price to pay in that scenario, and so would Windler b/c of his shooting at a position of need, but he is always injured anyway, so that might be the play. I personally think they’re using too many roster spots on bigs and even guards. Okoro can give them minutes at guard with Garland and Levert also there, as well as obviously Sexton, assuming they retain him. I’d rather have the shooting at those spots than the depth pieces
Last year Windler was kinda horrid and Osman was so bad and inconsistent that he had multiple DNPs late in the year
Neutral net rating for Windler though, and surprisingly useful defensively. If he is healthy, he can space the floor for them, as I doubt he continues to struggle with the shot
San Antonio would make sense for Colin Sexton.
He can play as the starting point guard, they have the cap space to be able to pay him a good amount of money and on that team he would have a good opportunity to put up big numbers.
He’s not good enough to stop them from tanking but he’s good enough to put up like 23-5-5. Give him a contract like 3 years 50 mil, then come the deadline or next offseason I’m sure you’ll be able to go flip him for a first round pick minimum.
SA drafted 2 guards in the top 25 this year. They need Sexton, why?
They can tank just fine without him.
Cause neither of them are point guards.
They only point guard they have on the roster or Trey Jones who averaged less than 20 minutes per game last year I believe.
Plus in the future it can net them back a first round pick by trading him
Sexton isnt really a PG either, and they have several players they can use at that spot
Q’s outta LEFT Field
How many points would Micheal Redd avg if in his prime today?
What kinda contract would a UFA 25 year old Stacy Augmon be looking to sign today with his AWESOME player profile?
Would Chris Mullen dare rock a flat top in 2022?
**Bonus – How many Kardashians does Lamar date if the 2nd star in the LeBron era rather than the Kobe ?
In his full prime, I could see Redd averaging around 30, depending on what team he was on
True the 19′ 4 out Rockets w RW and Harden might be 33 ~35!
Really most interested in the Augmon Q as its signing season – I don’t dare take a guess but boy was that kid a glove early on in his career. Youtube Augmons best defensive plays, incredible 4 min watch
Bulls need help at the 4 off the bench, and a backup 5 that can defend pick and roll and protect the rim, and potentially someone that can play small ball 5. Drummond was an unfortunate decision b/c he doesnt defend pick and roll or protect the rim, and he is a ball stopper. I personally hope Millsap goes to the Heat, but he is an option. I think Juan Hernangomez would fit well at the 4 off the bench as a shooter next to their defenders, and possibly Eric Paschall as a small ball 5
Sexton should call up Nerlens or Schroder and ask em how it felt to turn down that 4/80.
His only opportunity for the payday was last year. He accepts a QO in a reduced role and he won’t get paid unless he is traded. I would take a 4 yr deal and eventually get traded and outplay it and hope to get another 4 yr deal at a better clip.
I think the Cavs are the perfect place for Durant to be traded to:
Cavs get:
Durant
Nets Get:
J.Allen
C.Osman
O.Agbaji (14th Pick in 2022)
C. Sexton (Sign & Trade 4 Years/70 Million)
2024 1st Round Pick
2026 1st Round Pick
Too much??? Too Little???
I think a lineup of Garland/Levert/Markkanen/Durant/Mobley
With Love/Rubio/Lopez/Okoro/Neto/
is a title contender
what does everyone think?
He doesn’t want that pressure – LeBron won there, he doesn’t want any more of that comparison.
So how long have I been saying this. Oh yeah since he got hurt and Garland made him expendable. There is no way he is taking less than VanVleet. This surely going to be a sign n trade. Cavs are better off with the value they get.
There’s a lot of silly posts on this page for various reasons.
A $20mil contract, $5mil over luxury, is more expensive than it looks.
Levert should get a fair run.
And must say Sexton should get a run at PG somewhere with his newer skills.
IDK how long this could drag out.
@x%sure
Levert is getting $18 mil next year and isn’t anywhere near the scorer that Sexton is. I think he’s found his place as a SG. No shame in that. Cavs simply have an inability to draw major talent to Cleveland. Id rather they move Levert as an expiring contract. Move Cedi’s contract to stay under the lux tax if needed. Let’s see what it looks like with a Garland/Sex/Markkanen/Mobley/Allen line up. Love is also on an expiring 1/$37 mil deal too. That’s coming off the books end of year. Plus Gilbert has never flinched from being over thr lux if the team is competitive. Team was 25th in scoring last year and SG is a position where they can easily add more scoring by letting Sex do his thing. Last year in the 2nd half we relied on Garland too much. He played a league leading 38 min per in the 2nd half. What happens if he gets hurt? Who can pick up the scoring. Sex can allow Garland a breather on the court just by letting him walk the ball up. This is just too simple and it feels like Koby is making it more difficult. I hope they offer him 2/$40-5/$75.
I agree. Send out Levert for w.e they can get and offer Sexton a fair contract. Move Cedi if they have too.
