Collin Sexton‘s foray into restricted free agency could drag on into training camp or even the regular season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Talks between the Cavaliers and Sexton’s representatives have reportedly reached a standstill after the Cavs offered close to $40MM over three seasons.
Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, Sexton’s agent, has shown no interest in settling for anything less than a “starting guard salary” in negotiations, Charania adds. Sexton, who missed last season after knee surgery, could sign his $7.2MM qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
We have more from the Central Division:
- Bucks GM Jon Horst hopes that Jordan Nwora‘s restricted free agency works out for both parties, Eric Nehm of The Athletic writes. Nwora must first figure out if he has a market around the league. Then, he can either sign an offer sheet that would force the Bucks to match or inform the Bucks of that interest and see if a trade is feasible.
- The Pacers will inevitably trade both Myles Turner and Buddy Hield, as they’ve embraced a full rebuild, according to Bob Kravitz of The Athletic. Team president Kevin Pritchard isn’t in a rush to deal either player, but the Pacers are serious about opening up cap space and accumulating assets.
- The Pacers’ G League affiliate, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, traded Keifer Sykes‘ rights to the Pistons’ affiliate, the Motor City Cruise, in exchange for the rights to Derrick Walton and Deividas Sirvydis, along with a 2023 second-round pick, Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files tweets. Sirvydis was a second-round pick by Detroit in 2019. The inclusion of the Cruise’s 2023 second-rounder signals that the Pistons and their affiliate expect Sykes to play in the G League in 2022/23. The 28-year-old appeared in 32 games with Indiana last season, averaging 5.6 PPG and 1.9 APG in 17.7 MPG.
Will be interesting to see how the Sexton thing plays out. Not sure his camp has much leverage but never count out Rich Paul.
Anyways I’m hoping he just accepts the qualifying offer to keep the LeBron return possibility alive lol
In this case, Garland as a client, the possibility of a LBJ return, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out with Rich having a lot of entanglements with the team.
I give the Cavs a D for the offseason. The only positives were drafting Agbaji and bringing back Rubio. But honestly, a mid 30s back up point guard coming off a torn ACL after shooting 36% from the field isn’t that inspiring of an impactful improvement. Robin Lopez give us more depth for the backend. But not a single move to improve the team from 25th out of 30 in offense to at least top15.
Don’t forget that Agbaji is older than Okoro and only 9 months younger than Sexton.
Improvement from within is still possible

Absolutely, and I’m glad they didn’t try and get involved in trades for Westbrook, Kyrie, Mitchell or Durant. I really wanted to give this core another year to see what they really can be and then look to take another leap afterwards. But Sexton coming back from an injury would me a great addition. I just don’t get the negatively towards Sexton. Compare him to some of the best getting paid $30 mil ++ and there’s more alike than different.
The negativity toward Sexton is that he’s a black hole. Once the ball gets in his hand, it never comes out. Meanwhile he plays defense like a matador – Olé, as he watches his man pass by.
The infamous Bird trap
Ironically Cle kinda saved Lauiri last year from a team (Chi) unwilling to enter the bird trap , now they face one of their own
Posters (good/local ones) seem to really like the guy. I can’t say I’ve seen enough to evaluate an opinion ( 21 Cle was hard to watch/ 22 was inj)
Front office def seems to have thier fair share of doubts; an interesting opportunity via S&T could pop up for another team here if they like the merchandise
@cap
They need a legit scorer to play the SG position. I just don’t see one out their that either wants to come to Cleveland or can be had without ripping apart the team. Sexton is a good comp to Donovan Mitchell and yet he’s literally under our nose and under appreciated. I know some nba guys who know him and they all say he’s a good dude.
No you don’t
I’m not sure I understand the negativity toward the Cavs front office. Think of where this team was after LeBron left. Think of just a year ago, coming off a 22 win season. I’m not saying Koby is a genius, but has any Cavs GM ever made so many good decisions?
You’re right, not even when they had LeBron did the FO make consistent good decisions.
If I were him I would want at least a 4/80. He was trending in that direction or higher pre-injury. A 3/60 could be a compromise. Cavs need more of a 2 way player tho even if it’s a step down overall. Like a S&T with SAS or maybe DAL for Richardson or Bullock plus a draft pick would be a decent route to go. Cavs will need to free up $, and both players would provide what they need this year with the potential to reup at the end of the season at cheaper clips.
Cavs should hold firm. No one was offering him anything above what the Cavs have offered. Or he would be gone in a sign and trade. Sexton needs to sign the QO and recoup his value. Someone will pay up next year or not. The Cavs learned hard way signing Tristian Thompson and Jr Smith to above average contracts to Klutch and Lebron last go around.
He shouldn’t let it drag past Oct 1 (or whatever other date the Q/O expires). If he is still unhappy with the alternatives, then take the Q/O. It shouldn’t come to that, as it’s not in the interest of either party. But, in any case, it would be idiotic to sit out or compromise any part of this season after missing almost all of last year.
