If the Cavaliers resolve their contractual differences with restricted free agent Collin Sexton, it will likely impact another player on a guaranteed contract, Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes in his latest mailbag. Adding Sexton would put the team one over the 15-man roster limit.
The Cavaliers would prefer not waive Lamar Stevens and Dean Wade, who are on non-guaranteed deals. Instead, the team would likely look to move either Cedi Osman and Dylan Windler, perhaps in a trade with an asset or two attached to a team like Indiana or San Antonio, who have cap space.
We have more from the Central Division:
- DeMar DeRozan felt the Bulls weren’t “ready for adversity” last season when injuries piled up, he told Draymond Green on his podcast (hat tip to K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago). “We kind of fell apart. We lost ourselves obviously through health,” he said. “Regardless, I think I told one of the young guys after All-Star break, I said this is the moment when you see what teams are serious. He didn’t know what I meant by that. For us to hit the wall that we hit showed that we wasn’t ready for adversity.”
- During the same podcast, DeRozan spoke of how criticism aimed at the Bulls for engineering a sign-and-trade with San Antonio fueled his highly productive season. He averaged a career-high 27.9 PPG. “My whole career has kind of been based off that (criticism). But I never let it bring me completely down. It knocked me down. But I got back up,” he said. “And for me, that moment of going to Chicago, I just told myself, ‘This is a new opportunity. I’m going to make the most out of it in every type of way.’”
- The Bucks had plenty of other options with their taxpayer mid-level exception. So why did they choose Joe Ingles, who is recovering from a torn ACL? According to Eric Nehm of The Athletic, they felt Ingles was the most complete player available to them.
Glad the bulls got derozan. At a minimum, he helped speed up the culture change that the front office seems to be clawing towards.
Cedi Osman still 2 seasons 7,43 million per season? Seems seriously overpaid.
Windler an expiring 4 million, also don’t think he has any value.
What do you guys think it would take to get rid of those contracts?
Sexton did not accept 13 million a season, so they could raise the offer up to 24,5 million per season minus what they take back to stay under luxury tax line. 24,5 would be too much for him though…
I don’t see too many appealing assets to attach. They’d probably have to offer two seconds or a pick swap to generate any interest. They probably wouldn’t get anything back in return, just a heavily protected second that won’t ever change hands. Might be worth it for Windler’s expiring deal, but probably not for Osman.
The Cavs front office has shown some cleverness on the trade front. Given that they have a variety of expiring contracts to work with, and that they surely anticipated this situation, I trust them to make some lemonade here. At worst they cut Stevens and somebody else signs and pays him. Does Rubio’s contract count as one of the 15 while he is on the injured list? Btw, Cedi’s contract is only partially guaranteed for ’23-’24.
“Joe is a proven shot maker who will add great depth to our roster,” said Bucks General Manager Jon Horst. “He is a terrific person and teammate who will fit in well with our team and community. We’re thrilled to welcome Joe and his family to Milwaukee.”
This is an Excellent move by Bucks. I agree 100% with their GM. To add Ingles a seasoned vet who has never won. To a top contender. Makes them a favorite imo. Bucks team to beat in East. They are a deep deep team. And Gianni’s is only 27 yrs old.
“Fear the Deer” …….. for sure
Bulls need some Pat Bev in their life. On-ball defense would be sick in Chicago. Bring him home!
Bulls are a mess. They need to sign DeMarcus Cousins and trade Vucevic while he still has some value. Signing Cousins frees them up to move Vucevic, the Cavs might be interested in a player like Vucevic with Kevin Love at the tail end of his career, could possibly pry away Collin Sexton and Isaiah Mobley. Those two would fit nice on the Bulls, Collin Sexton is a great pg.
They should also look at moving Zach LaVine for Westbrook if it’s a possibility, Westbrook’s expiring contract will give the Bulls some options in 2023 FA.
Sexton, Ball, DeRozan, Pat Will and Cousins would be nice, with Caruso and Drummond of the bench.
Cousins’ days of being a core player on a playoff, let alone championship caliber team are in the past. There’s a reason both the Bucks and Nuggets moved on from him in the past year.
you should change “championship caliber” to “any”
Compared to what? 2 years ago? They’ve made huge strides since the Gar-Pax disaster was mercifully over.
Get rid of windler or wade. Why get rid of the one guy who won a championship there and is lebron’s friend. Osman is a good bench peice. I don’t care about 7m a year contract when others make way way more than that.
