Teams monitoring the Donovan Mitchell situation believe Utah is looking for a package headlined by draft picks in exchange for the star guard, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv.
Those same teams say the Jazz are looking for deal similar in scope to what they received for Rudy Gobert, which was unprotected first-round picks in 2023, 2025, and 2027, along with a top-five protected 2029 first-round pick and the right to swap first-rounders in 2026. Utah also received Minnesota’s 2022 first-rounder, Walker Kessler, as well as Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Leandro Bolmaro.
As Begley observes, the Knicks have the capability to meet the Jazz’s first-round pick criteria, which might give them a leg up over other suitors like the Heat.
Having said that, the Knicks are leery of trading away the kind of compensation Utah got for Gobert because they believe they wouldn’t have a good enough roster remaining to be a contender. Including RJ Barrett might be a non-starter for New York, as the Knicks have no interest in dealing the 22-year-old wing, Begley reports.
It’s unclear if Utah would even be interested in Barrett, considering he’s eligible for a rookie scale extension and could be in line for a large payday. Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report said at the end of June that there was “mutual interest” between the Knicks and Barrett in coming to terms on an extension, and Begley reiterates that the two sides are “optimistic” about a deal coming together.
According to Begley, the Nets also have interest in Mitchell, but the designated rookie rule complicates matters, because they already have Ben Simmons.
In his examination of where Mitchell might land, Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer believes that sending Simmons and picks to Utah might appeal to the Jazz. However, the Nets would be wise to stand pat on the trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Simmons if they want to contend, because that is their best pathway to a title, O’Connor says.
The race for Wembanyama is heating up.
It’s a good year to tank, for many teams.
Yeah Wembyitous is going to ravage the league worse than Covid! Lol
Suggs, Franz, Hampton, Mo, TRoss plus picks is better than anything that NYK can offer. Magic can offer more than Mia or any other team as well
Have the Magic been linked to Mitchell at all? Otherwise, I’m not sure why you’re pounding this idea so hard on every Mitchell article.
I was going to say I have not seen a Sank post in a while. I only have AsFan blocked; maybe HR is blocking him from me because I argue with him a lot. Another site?
I hope he does go to Magic. Too expensive right now. Unless they take Randle and Fournier ……
Exactly it, Orlando!!
I’d go Markelle Fultz, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Terrance Ross, 3 first round picks and 2 pick swaps for Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gay.
Orlando are left with Cole Spida Paolo Issacs and Carter Jr. off the bench Hampton Harris Gay Okeke and Bamba. Team would be awesome and Jazz would get a very good return. To start a rebuild they have Suggs and Fraz, a bunch of picks and swaps and then a bunch of vets that they would look to flip including Beverly, Conley, Clarkson, Beasley Ross and Bogi.
Smaller role guys such as Bolmaro, NAW and Fultz would have a good opportunity to impress aswell.
If they want a package as good or better than the one they got for Gobert, I’m definitely passing on that if I’m the Knicks. Five 1sts (mostly unprotected), a pick swap, and four players was a big overpay by the T’Wolves. Unless you include significant protections on the 1sts, Knicks would be insane to offer something on that level.
Michelle to the Suns
cp3, shamet to the lakers
Westbrook and a lakers 1st round, 2 suns 1st round and some second round picks
Westbrook and the picks to the jazz^
Michelle is a female name?
Ayton, Cam Johnson and 3 1sts for Mitchell.
Zero chance Suns trade CP3. Come on. CP3 and two 1sts on top of it is insane.
CP3 disappears in the playoffs his entire career and is almost 40. Mitchell and booker would be elite. No brainer
Neither is gonna happen. If they ever decided to move CP3, it won’t be for Mitchell. The fit isn’t great.
How would Booker and Mitchell work in the backcourt together neither is much of a playmaker for others, both shooting guards that a score first guys.
On the Lakers behalf it makes sense but doesn’t really help them get any younger. They already are a really old team and this would make them even older. Then in return the Jazz only get 3 first round picks for Mitchell… they got back like 5 for Gobert so it doesn’t make sense for them either
Mitchell and booker both played point before Conley went to the jazz and rubio to the suns. Both average 5 assists last year off the ball. That’s 10 assists between them and would figure that would go up with the ball in their hands more. But yea, I agree the jazz likely wouldn’t take it. Lakers would for sure, lakers fans would go crazy for him. They love their stars, even melo was loved there haha
Actually, before Conley and Rubio was Exum at PG. He kept getting injured so they traded for Conley then later traded Exum for Clarkson.
The dumb thing is that the Jazz would always just let guys walk instead of trading them. They lost out on so many opportunities with Jefferson, Millsap, Hayward, and Rubio. It’s no wonder they had no flexibility. Dennis Lindsay was super lazy I guess? Ainge would never let that happen. So glad he’s here to steer the ship. <3
Yeah from memory Jazz had Conley before that Rubio before that Exum and before that Hill. As for the Suns they have had CP3, Rubio, Bledsloe, Payton.
Just didn’t really feel like arguing about it but both Booker and Mitchell are SGs that handle the ball a lot and hence have 4/5 assists each. But in today’s NBA positions are really that relevant. Raptors and Clippers both play 2 guard 3 forwards or 1 guard 4 forward line ups. Mavs almost do the same. Simmons was aSF in college decided he was a PG and now is a drama queen on the sidelines. It’s all kinda who cares hence why I didn’t want to get into it but here we are lol
Trust me. Mitchell ran the point for some time. Neither are natural points but 5 assists each shows they can pass
And for 1-2 years they could run it with Paul. Along with Bridges and Saric, that would be a tough group to guard.
Too small if they kept Paul too
There are rumors of Grant Williams, Pritchard, and picks from the Celtics for Donovan Mitchell . Ainge is in charge of the Jazz. Stay tuned on this one :)
Huh Williams and Pritchard headlining a trade for Mitchell? In what world?
Even if a team gives up 5 first. Utah will still want a a high quality player in return. Dont see Pritchard or Williams becoming that.
There’s got to be more than that. Ainge would know exactly what the Celtics have to offer. Lol
I highly doubt that a guy who wants out and 2 crazy, injury prone players are the Nets best bet for a title.
They are if all healthy because the Nets didn’t completely dismantle their supporting cast. Yes, they lost Brown, Dragic and Drummond, but they have Harris returning and Simmons debuting. Edwards, Clax and Mills re-signed. They acquired O’Neale and still have Seth Curry. If KD and Kyrie return and all stay healthy, they’re contenders.
I forgot to mention they bought low on two former Pacers returning from injury – TJ Warren and Edmond Sumner. If healthy, they could be excellent options off the bench.
I would give any amount of picks and young players for Mitchell as long as I’m keeping RJ, Robinson, Randall and Brunson. Take the picks, take IQ, take Toppin, take the vets you need to make the money match. You have a chance to get one of the most prolific single game playoff scorers in history, in his prime at 25. Plenty of time to get cheap veterans and ring chasers to come to NY to put around that core.
It would finally give people a reason to come here.
I just hope the part of the article about the jazz may not even want RJ is accurate. The wolves didn’t have to give anyone of that caliber up in the gobert deal though. Sounds like Ainge is trying to do exactly what he did in Boston. I really really hope the Knicks capitalize on this opportunity to get a bonafide star. You can’t win titles without a star.
What ‘vets’ are you trading to match salaries? Utah is probably not interested in Fournier because he has two years left on his deal. Maybe Rose, since he’s $15 million they can take off the books next year.
Rose, IQ, Toppin, Reddish, and Grimes matches, but that leaves you with a roster of like nine players (Mitchell, Brunson, RJ, Randle, Robinson, Fournier, McBride, Hartenstein, and Sims), and that team is still barely a playoff team in a crowded East with zero money left over and RJ needing a contract next year.
I’ll disagree about them not being a playoff team with Mitchell added. I think they’re probably a playoff team as is. I also wouldn’t not bring a star here because the East is crowded. Teams not even .500 make the playoffs anyways. Not having money to sign RJ is an issue but you can find a way to get rid of Fournier and then figure it out. I don’t have the means to figure out exactly how they could make it work, but I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a way.
Call Connolly of the Timberpuppies who has already proven to be a fool in his Gobert deal with Utah. He should be willing to trade: 5 rostered players PLUS First Round Draft Choices in 2031, 2033, 2035, 2037 & 2039 PLUS the NBA rights to “Hardware” Henk Norel.
I believe you can only trade draft picks so many years out. There’s also a limit of how many total you can send out. I could be wrong. I do know you can only trade 1st round picks from every other year.
Anyone know the trade limits?
I think it’s that you can’t trade your own in consecutive years. But the Knicks also own a bunch of firsts from other teams. I’m too lazy to google exactly which ones but they just traded theirs this year for some.
It’s seven years out. You can trade your own pick every other year with optional pick swaps for the intervening years. As for the suggestion of a 2039 pick by Jacksson, I think the child has to be out of diapers at the time of the trade. :)
Once silver gets involved, none of these trade scenarios will go down.
The fact that they’re listening doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to trade him. The media propaganda machine has always gone way overboard when it comes to Donovan Mitchell. It’s like it’s a coordinated effort, by some team or agency, to wear down a targeted team into doing what they want. Seems to work, but very annoying. Lol
That’s fair but based on Ainges history and the whispers for a couple years now … you can kind of come to the presumption that they’ll listen, without having to hear it from the media.
Mitchell’s situation has nothing to do with why Silver isn’t happy with Durant. In one scenario, a player just signed an extension and has gone dark towards the franchise after publicly asking out.
Mitchell didn’t request a trade and this is ainge really wanting to put his stamp on the jazz by tearing down and rebuilding through the draft. He was very successful with this strategy in Boston.
The issue silver had was that the nba becomes a total mockery and contracts start to become meaningless if players have no obligation at all to honor their commitment.
Mitchell is not worth it unless they take Randle and Fournier. Or either …..
Randle, Fournier, Grimes, Quickley, Mitch (combination of) are better than players they got for Rudy. And picks are no problem. No way I’m giving up RJ. Not giving up Toppin either. Frankly I’d rather just wait out another situation to open up.
