JULY 6: The Hawks have officially signed Holiday, the team announced today in a press release.
JULY 1: Aaron Holiday is joining the Hawks on a one-year contract, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic. It will be a veteran’s minimum deal, according to Lauren L. Williams of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (Twitter link).
The 25-year-old guard began last season with the Wizards before being traded to the Suns at the February deadline. Holiday averaged 6.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 22 games with Phoenix, but he wasn’t in the playoff rotation and saw minimal playing time in six postseason games.
Holiday became an unrestricted free agent this week when the Suns elected not to tender a qualifying offer.
The 23rd pick in the 2018 draft, Holiday spent three seasons with the Pacers before being traded to Washington last summer in a five-team deal. The former UCLA star was mostly a backup in Indiana, but started 33 games during the 2019/20 season.
Holiday should help fill the void left by Delon Wright, who is headed to the Wizards in free agency.
Will HoopsRumors be doing the roster count feature this year?
Yes. We usually wait until after guys start officially signing, since it’s sort of a mess until then.
Cheers
As far as value this gotta be 1 of the better signings in free agency so far. Sharife vs AHoliday for the backup pg spot should be 1 of the better training camp battles. This kid is sorta undersized but he’s a dog defensively & that’s exactly what we needed. Adding this guy & Dejounte while losing Gallo & Lou Will makes our defense much stronger already but there’s still a lil more work to do.
I’m a Aaron Holiday fan. The fact that he got traded for cash considerations last year was a joke.
He is one of those guys that never really had the backing of an organization for whatever reasons. Jalen Smith was the same. I thought Bamba was to but somehow he went back to the Magic who obviously don’t really like him.
I like all the Hawks moves. Especially Murray, Trae shoots 48% of C&S and 71% efg%. Small amount of volume but still so tantalizing.
I hope they don’t do anything dumb like move Collins. The Hawks have made a big leap, be very proud. Even kept Griffin in the Murray deal. Who needs picks when u have Cooper, Jalen Johnson and Griffin developing. Go Hawks
Jalen Smith never got a legit chance in Phoenix but the same can’t really be said about Aaron in Indy. He was given opportunities he just was never able to outplay McConnell & secure his spot on the team. I like him too tho. He’ll have a good chance to be an important part of our backcourt but he’ll have to beat out Sharife Cooper which should be doable but not a given… yea Traes 3pt % is about to go way up. Dejounte’s will too. Very excited about the #DeJohnTrae big3 & almost equally excited about our young guys as well. Still hopeful we can go get Ayton but if we keep Clint I’ll be good with that too
Phoenix should have used him more. He is a really good catch and shoot guy, and should fit well next to Murray, and he can defend the guard spot
Trae / Dejounte / Hunter / Collins (I hope he stays) / Capela
Holiday & Cooper / Huerter / Bogi / Jalen / Okongwu
That’s a lot of flexibility and ability to run.
Cooper played 39 minutes, probably in garbage time, with very minus efficiency… Sank likes him bc he’s from Georgia.
Aaron Holiday should easily get the second-string minutes.
Jalen will be supplanted by AJ Griffin.
Also by Harkless & Justin Holiday, and Huerter gone, but that is future news!
