JULY 6: The trade is now official, according to a press release from the Hawks. Within the team’s announcement, president of basketball operations Travis Schlenk referred to Holiday and Harkless as “two defensive-minded, quality veterans who can help our team on the court and in the locker room.”
JULY 1: The Hawks and Kings have agreed to a trade that will send sharpshooter Kevin Huerter to Sacramento, sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
According to Wojnarowski, Atlanta will receive forwards Justin Holiday and Maurice Harkless in the deal, along with a future first-round pick.
That first-rounder will be the Kings’ own 2024 selection and will be lottery-protected, reports Chris Kirschner of The Athletic (Twitter link). If it doesn’t convey immediately, it would be top-12 protected in 2025 and top-10 protected in 2026. If it still hasn’t changed hands by that point, the Hawks would instead receive two second-rounders, says Kirschner.
The Kings have clearly made it a priority this offseason to add reliable outside shooting to complement their two stars, De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. Huerter made a career-high 38.9% of his three-pointers in 2021/22, attempting 5.6 per game.
Neither Fox nor Sabonis is a major threat from beyond the arc, but they should be surrounded by solid floor-spaces. In addition to striking a deal for Huerter, the Kings have also drafted Keegan Murray and agreed to sign Malik Monk since the offseason began.
The Hawks, meanwhile, will replenish their stash of draft assets slightly after giving up three first-round picks and a swap to acquire Dejounte Murray earlier in the week.
Atlanta will also move off Huerter’s four-year, $65MM contract, creating a little extra long-term flexibility and also shedding some salary in the short term. As Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype tweets, Atlanta is hovering right around the tax line for 13 players.
While the Hawks will miss Huerter’s shooting, their first-round pick, AJ Griffin, was considered one of the top marksmen in this year’s draft class and should help make up for that loss. Assuming both are retained, Holiday and Harkless also offer some defensive versatility that Huerter lacked.
The Hawks have now agreed to acquire two of the Holiday brothers today — they also reached a deal to sign point guard Aaron Holiday.
A first lol
Fox/Monk/Huerter/Murray/Sabonis…not a bad starting 5
I can’t see this team being decent at defense…
Why would huerter start over barnes?
Barnes is a 4 & Kev is a 2. They won’t have anything to do with whether the other guy starts or not
Barnes more of a 3, kinda weak 4.
They still have Harrison Barnes. I think Murray comes off the bench unless they trade Barnes.
Monk is definitely not starting. Davion Mitchell will be starting. Yall gotta do better if you’re gonna be so critical of these teams & players
Davion will NOT be starting. He is the guy they need off the bench. Think Bobby Jackson.
think lawrence funderberk
Thank you for thinking of me
Why would Mitchell start. When they have Fox ….. take your own advice lol.
Hawks are blowing it up. CJ would have been so much simpler
3 of the 5 are not viable threats from 3 so I would replace Murray with Barnes to help space out the defense. Fox can drive and kick to 3 guys rather than 2. Sabonis has same options in the post.
I would also add that starting lineups are overrated. For example, Atlanta most frequently used starting lineup was Capela-Gallinari-Huerter-Hunter-Young and they played a total 232 minutes together or 6% of the team’s total minutes. Depth is much more important and how your bench complements each other and the starters will win the day or championship.
Who plays defense tho?
Mitchell is going to cover all 5 positions
Saw this writing on the wall from a male away. There was no reason to keep Kev, we already got Bogdan as a better option as 6th man. Interested to see what the future 1st rd pick is. Good move tho. Getting a tough, experienced, respected vet forward like Mo Harkless was a must. Bringing back Justin & reuniting him with his bro is pretty cool too. Justin probably fills the role that TLC filled last yr as wing depth. That’s definitely an upgrade. Hawks have already upgraded in numerous areas & we’re less than 24hrs into free agency… I’m also seeing this as (even more) evidence that John Collins ain’t going anywhere
You’re gonna miss the Red Mamba just a little though.
More than a lil bit. I was a huge fan of this guy during the times when nobody knew about him. As he sorta became a fan favorite I went the other way & tried to be the voice of reason as far as how ppl here in Atl perceived him. But the kid is extremely likable. He has a very innocent manner & just always reminded me of how Opie Taylor would be if he grew into a nba prospect. Kev’s game7 in Philly is literally 1 of the greatest performances in Atl sports history & will never be forgotten. It was time for him to go tho. Tbh we never should have given him that extension in the 1st place. I truly believe that was the nail in the coffin as far as Cam Reddish’s Hawks career. We keep Cam & we wouldn’t even need to trade for Dejounte. But hey it all worked out
Cam will never be on Dejounte’s lvl…
If you know anything about these 2guys then you should know Cam’s already been above Dejounte’s level. 1 guy was a lottery pick after a yr of college while the other was a late 1st pick. Chill on saying stuff like never unless you’re sure bc as you now know 1st hand, it’s embarrassing to be definitively & publicly proven wrong
Outside his first season, Murray has 4 seasons with PER above 15.
Cam has three seasons with 9, 9, and 13 PER.
ATL traded him for almost nothing. I don’t understand why you say those things… you should be happy that ATL is getting better, Cam first needs to prove he can be a good player in the NBA.
That’s wassup but back to your original statement… you do understand that your original statement was wrong tho don’t you?
I don’t know if you are an idiot or a troll. LoL
I think both. But I still dont mind him.
I thought Everybody’s an expert in these threads
He’s just incredibly arrogant and assumes so much about a bunch of user names on a forum. He’s right about some, granted, but way, way off on others.
Sank thinks Reddish is better than Dejounte bc Reddish was a better teenager.
Sank never grew up.
That pick is going to the Suns the hawks are about to get Ayton for Clint , and a first
Called that weeks ago.. but tbh I’d rather give Phoenix our 2023 1st & keep Sacramento’s 2024 1st tbh
Barnes is history as Sacramento changes pieces but still going nowhere fast.
Hawks win this trade. They shed salary while regaining some draft capital they lost in the Dejounte Murray trade. The Kings don’t have a defense.
Love this deal for Sacramento, especially if they also can keep Jeramy Lamb. All of the sudden, they’re very good, in my opinion. That being said, they are Sacramento, so I’ll hold put on that for now lol
For Atlanta, I get you might get a good pick put of this, but I personally think this is a poor decision. You just had AJ Griffin fall to you to replenish your depth, and then move an important 2 way wing piece in Huerter. Griffin is a 3/2, but he is probably best defensively at the 4, and they could have used a really strong wing rotation with Huerter, Hunter, and Griffin around their bigs/as shooters for Trae and Murray. There is still more that can happen, and they still have shooting from Bogdanovic, and Harkless can give them more depth at the 4, but for now I think this osnt a good move for this year at least, just b/c I think Huerter can give them more on the wing. Hopefully Hunter can stay healthy and show more consistency at the 3, rather than the 4, which would help mitigate this
That being said, I think with so much movement, it’s probably best to see the final product before throwing criticisms b/c it’s literally only day 2 of FA
Holiday Bros reunited
This is a win-win
I hate to see Red Velvet leave Atlanta – quality versatile player, great person. But, happy that he will get a chance to start.
So the Kings actually improved this year?
Kings defense got way worse and they gave up draft equity. Im sure the first was protected.
Teams will love to have Sacto on their sced.
I was a little low, or maybe Sac’s just a little High on the Huerter value-
Thought it be said players and maybe like 2 seconds instead of the first –
Just a great job by ATL from a future ledger perspective. This was the contract to get off of and they netted a first in the process. Id keep Collins at least till the deadline to get a look at everyone together. A once messy ledger is now looking pretty damn clean today. Really like what ATL and Denver have done this past week
Hope that Red Velvet finally finds his niche with these KINGS ……… Huerter seems to have the tools to be a poor-man’s Klay, yet doesn’t take that hard next step. He’ll be very good for a game, yet disappear the next 4 games.
Mo Useless, I mean Mo Harkless always seems to find himself a team, somehow.
I was hoping him to be the next Scalabrine in Boston
Me too , I was hoping he would end up in Boston , not the kings for sure I don’t watch the kings
I like what the Kings are doing. Putting a decent squad together.
