JULY 20: Green has officially been waived by the Thunder, the team announced (via Twitter). He will clear waivers on Friday.
JULY 19: Veteran forward JaMychal Green is negotiating a contract buyout with the Thunder, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets. Once it is completed and he clears waivers, Green intends to sign with the defending champion Warriors.
Oklahoma City had sought to deal Green after acquiring him from the Nuggets last month. That didn’t happen and now Green is looking to help Golden State defend its latest title.
Green, 32, is at the stage of his career where he provides greater value to a contender than a rebuilding team. He’s on an $8.2MM expiring contract for 2022/23.
On a veteran’s minimum deal for a player with eight years of service, Green can sign with the Warriors for $2,628,597. Golden State’s cap hit would be $1,836,090, Bobby Marks of ESPN tweets.
Golden State only has 11 players on its 15-man roster, along with two unsigned second-round picks. Thus, there’s plenty of roster room for the Warriors to bring in Green.
Denver dealt Green to the Thunder in June. The Nuggets also sent a protected 2027 first-round pick to the Thunder in exchange for the draft rights to No. 30 pick Peyton Watson and two second-rounders (one in 2023 and one in 2024).
Green had a down year in 2021/22, averaging 6.4 PPG and 4.2 RPG on .486/.266/.871 shooting in 67 games (16.2 MPG) for the Nuggets, but has proven to be an effective stretch four over the years. Entering ’21/22, he had knocked down 38.0% of his three-point attempts in his first seven NBA seasons.
He’ll provide depth for Golden State at power forward behind Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga.
Oklahoma City is still in the process of paring down its overloaded roster. The team will have 19 players officially under contract once Green is officially cut.
This is a really good look after losing Otto. Green isn’t gonna be quite as good as Otto was this past yr, esp as a shooter but he brings toughness to their 2nd unit which will most likely have alot of youth alongside him
I don’t think they’re a direct replacement, I think Green replaces Bjelica more. Carmelo Anthony would be a cleaner replacement for Otto.
Except for defense and rebounding, ofc
Mello rebounds ok its the looking like a drill cone when he trys to stay in front of guys that kills him lols…
Maybe Ron Adams can defense whisper him!
Couldn’t agree more.
Nice. Green always played well against the Warriors when he was with the Clippers. He can shoot the 3 (until last year, anyway) and grab rebounds which makes him a nice replacement for Otto Porter.
Damn really? Man I wish the Heat could have got him, as I have for years…
He gives them depth in case anything happens to Draymond, or even potentially Looney, although I thought they would go more for a scorer/shooter type to replace Porter
I am wondering about his spot in the rotation though, with Kuminga also likely to see an increased role. I guess if Iguodala doesnt come back, Kuminga takes that spot more, and then Green kind of adds there…
Always somehow gets super underpaid
Iguodala is done.
Signing Iguodala to a Vet minimum contract ($2.3M) would Cost the team ~$14M.
When u factor in how many games he is likely to play in, it just doesn’t make sense to spend that kind of dough on him.
I’d be shocked if they brought him back.
There is no tax on Iguodala over a two year player signing for the minimum.
The two-year veteran’s minimum. When a team signs any player with two or more years of experience to a one-year contract, the team only pays that player the minimum for a second-year player. The NBA reimburses the team for the rest, and the difference does not count against the salary cap.Jun 30, 2022 from CBS Sports
“When u factor in how many games he is likely to play in, it just doesn’t make sense to spend that kind of dough on him.”
This is why you aren’t in pro basketball – you said “It just doesnt make sense to spend that kind of dough on him” – you are pocket watching the wallet of a billionaire and the 25th richest and best owner in the NBA’s wallet, which he has stated over and over he will keep open as long as it means a title.
Your mind is so destroyed by scammer owners who tell you “money is tight” when they profit millions from doing nothing on court. It’s not reality, Udonis Haslem already is doing what GSW is lowkey saying they are about to do with Iggy, its already happening.
BTW its Iggy’s presence on the bench and in practice that is most valuable aspect of his. Having him around Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody, Poole and Baldwin will be worth so much. Also he was regularly seen wearing GSW sweatshirts off court even when he was on the Grizzlies and Heat – you are 10000% underestimating his overall value to the roster, and for the reason of “owner is a cheapskate” – which he has proven to be the opposite of.
Andre Iguodala is still very valuable on the court…
Iguodala is coming back, but is a severe part-time player. Might play like 5-10 games in the regular season, and then as-needed in playoffs.
Kuminga will be taking a lot more minutes, but they still need veterans. I love Carmelo Anthony finally getting a ring on this team. Pat Bev too.
DD is a replacement for a bench shooter who has some on ball skills, Green is more like the 3-D stretch 4-5.
Green’s arrival in Golden State would give the Warriors a stretch-four and Stretch-five.
He would be good for Lakers but Lakers want free agent young players or rising stars.
Green wants a championship ring so Warriors is where he can get one not the Lakers.
Silver needs to call the ownership in OKC and tell them that they at least need to pretend they’re trying to win games. Green is too good a player to buyout at this point if you’re a real basketball team, rebuilding or not.
They have a lot of pieces at his position, which I questioned when they made the trade in the first place, and then they drafted more players at those positions, so I figured he would get flipped. My guess is it became too late to do so on his deal, and their best bet otherwise was at the deadline. Here it just looks like they accommodated him
I don’t see anything on their roster that makes this a good basketball decision (to win now, or develop players, since he’s precisely the kind of veteran that would help their young big men like JRE develop). Though, as a standalone move, I guess it could be argued.
Here’s the real question: Do you think they make this same move if they didn’t have their own 1st round pick in the 2023 draft? I don’t. In fact, I think all of their major personnel decisions the past 3 years have been made with the singular goal of losing games.
I think they have a lot of guys on their roster that need playing time, and arent as bad as people might think. I think that is also why they let Isaiah Roby go like they did
This has been OKC’s mantra the last couple of years. Either stay away from the team and get paid or work out a buyout. Look what Presti did to AL Horford.
Super move for the Dubs! Meyers and company really know their business of basketball ! Depth piece, a vet looking for a ring
They are a very good front office, but Green fell into their laps.
They don’t get credit for this one.
Sure they do. They didn’t go sign someone else and they were patient for a guy like this or others to come along. Genius. Patience is tough when guys are falling left and right off the availability list.
Great deal for the Warriors. I was feeling worried about their front court depth, and I didn’t see much left in free agency. But leave it to the Warriors front office to have a better plan. Only problem now is they have two 32 year old Greens at PF!
Love it, next get Carmelo Anthony and Patrick Beverly, and then call it an offseason.
With Iguodala they have 15 signed, so no room for more. Only a 2-way slot remains. (Sign Mat McClung)!
They have 11 signed, including their 1st rounder this year. So including JaMychal Green, Rollins, and Iguodala, they would have 14 signed, and one 2-way.
They have a 2-way QO offer out to Weatherspoon, but that’s for the other 2-way spot, unless he declines it and decides to become an RFA.
How do you get to 15? Who else are you talking about?

I’m any case I think they keep their 15 spot open unless they get an opportunity they can’t refuse. The tax is extreme.
good work there Xtra. I’d like to see Blake Griffin be #15. Is he too injury prone. I just like the fit with he and Iggy on the bench. You’d think he’d take a vet minimum.
Blake or Melo would be the nice vet fit who only needs to play 15-20 mpg, I agree with that.
They’ve mentioned adding another Ball-handler. Maybe Eric Bledsoe is on their radar? I think he will receive a Buyout shortly.
With JaMichael in the roster Dubs won’t sign Blake but i would have prefer Griffin over this average dude … Hope Kuminga has more minutes than Green
@xtraflamy
That’s sound analysis, that’s likely what they will do. The youth movement have to play 30+ MPG, they all proved it last year and they will be even better this year. There’s honestly not enough minutes to spread out to 2-way and 14+15 guys. Keeping it open in case of injury is the wisest take. Or if some veteran becomes available and they feel the need to be that deep in the playoffs.
Blows my mind how teams just keep eating salary.. almost all owed to let a person go play and help another team.. just dumb and bad precedent to keep doing… Teams even now pay a player 40 plus million to stay at home while collecting a salary instead of keeping them on a team to help in any way needed.. aka John. Wall last year as an example
they needed the roster spot for one of the younger players. OKC is doing what more teams should do and build a young contender.
Good signing, he’s no OPJ but you can’t beat the price. His 3 pt shooting efficiency should recover somewhat in GSW’s system.
This is another “character” vet. He could be just as valuable as Porter, Payton, and other players Warriors lost this offseason. Bravo Myers!!!!
Any relation to Draymond or Trent?
