JULY 19: The Thunder have officially signed Williams, the team announced today in a press release.
JULY 9: The Thunder have reached an agreement with second-round pick Jaylin Williams, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Williams’ new contract will be worth $8.2MM over four seasons, per Charania. The team will use part of its non-taxpayer mid-level exception to complete the signing.
Oklahoma City took the 20-year-old big man – not to be confused with Thunder first-rounder Jalen Williams – with the 34th pick in last month’s draft. He was among four draft-night selections for OKC and should compete for playing time in the front court.
Williams played two years at Arkansas and averaged 10.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He was a first-team all-SEC selection by the coaches this season and earned a spot on the conference’s All-Defensive Team.
Thunder need one more lottery draft pick and a big trade to make playoffs
Aren’t teams limited to a 20 player roster in the offseason? By my count OKC has 21 players under contract. In no particular order:
1. Derrick Favors
2. Chet Holmgren
3. Luguentz Dort
4. Josh Giddey
5. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
6. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl
7. JaMychal Green
8. Darius Bazley
9. Jalen Williams
10. Tre Mann
11. Jaylin Williams
12. Mike Muscala
13. Osmane Dieng
14. Ty Jerome
15. Theo Maledon
16. Aaron Wiggins
17. Vit Krejci
18. Aleksej Pokusevski
19. Kenrich Williams
20. Liddy Waters (Two Way)
21. Eugene Omoruyi (Two Way)
Am I missing something here?
Mike Muscala and Jaylin Williams aren’t technically official yet. They’ll have to cut/trade someone in order to sign both.
They also reportedly agreed to Exhibit 10 deals with Gabe Brown and Jaden Shackelford — guessing those won’t happen until the fall, but more moves to come!
Thanks for the clarification. I’ve heard they have no intention of keeping Green. Wondering where he ends up
I’m guessing OKC is trying to move Derrick Favors or JaMychal Green in a trade before they make the Muscala signing official. Speaking of … with the Heat being so thin at the 4, they would match up really well with the Thunder. Something like Favors+Bazley+Kenrich Williams for Duncan Robinson + picks would be a nice fit for both.
A friendly note on JaMychal Green, courtesy of Fanspo’s trade machine: “Recently Traded
JaMychal Green cannot be traded to a team aggregated with other players from his team because 2 months have not passed since he was traded for. He can only be traded away to a team by himself and other non-player assets from his team (draft picks, cash considerations, etc). This restriction expires after Aug 22, 2022.”
So perhaps a team with a trade exception, like the Celtics, would be interested in taking on JaMychal Green’s expiring $8.2M for a 2nd rounder.
Fanspo’s got that wrong, actually.
That two-month aggregation restriction only applies to players acquired via salary-matching or a trade exception. Green was taken into OKC’s cap room, so he could be aggregated immediately if necessary.
They just resigned Kenrich to an extension so he can’t be moved for at least 6 months.
Solid as heck! Thunder will be a contender for yrs to come!
The Thunder are going to have to make a tough cut.
With Green and Favors, I expect both to be gone in trades to teams that could actually use them.
That’s 2.
Still need 1 to 3 more spots not counting 2 way guys.
Jerome, Wiggins, Maledon or Krejci.
I’m keeping Krejic and Wiggins. I like Maledon also and he played well late last year but they now have all those huge pseudo point guards. Giddy, SGA, Jalen Williams.
Just recently Green to join Warriors after being bought out.
