Jazz general manager Justin Zanik didn’t label Donovan Mitchell as “untouchable,” but he made it clear that moving Mitchell isn’t part of the team’s current plans, tweets Tim MacMahon of ESPN. In the wake of the Rudy Gobert trade, there has been speculation that Utah might seek to unload Mitchell and launch a full-scale rebuild, but Zanik said the organization still considers Mitchell to be a vital part of its future.
“Change is inevitable in the NBA,” Zanik responded when asked about Mitchell. “I’m not trying to be cryptic or anything else, but Donovan is on our roster and he’s a very, very important part of what we’re trying to do. Things evolve in the NBA, so I couldn’t sit here and say anybody is (untouchable). We’re trying to build a championship team, but there’s no intent there (to trade Mitchell), at all.”
Zanik added that management has been in touch with Mitchell and he “has been supportive” of the team’s offseason moves, according to Eric Walden of The Salt Lake Tribune (Twitter link). Mitchell may see more time as the primary ball-handler during the upcoming season, and CEO Danny Ainge believes he’s capable of becoming a full-time point guard (Twitter link).
There’s more on the Jazz:
- Zanik also said the team is “in the middle of” reforming its roster and indicated that more moves are coming, Walden tweets. Addressing the Gobert trade, Zanik said the Jazz loved having Gobert to anchor their defense, but decided the offer from Minnesota was “in the best interest of the organization.”
- The team is still considering re-signing free agents Eric Paschall, Trent Forrest and Juancho Hernangomez, Walden adds (Twitter link). “By no means have we closed the book on any of those guys,” Zanik said.
- First-round pick Walker Kessler is dealing with a minor toe injury that he suffered during pre-draft workouts and won’t play any more in Summer League, Walden tweets. Kessler has received clearance from the team’s medical staff, but will focus on conditioning.
- Jared Butler and Bruno Caboclo were Jazz “standouts” at the Salt Lake City Summer League, per Trent Wood of The Deseret News.
I would love to see Bruno Caboclo get another shot in the nba
He’s had a shot for the last 7 years straight. He’s Brazilian but not KD or even walmart KD. GLeaguer which is fine, but he’s had plenty of shots in the NBA.
He’s only played more than 244 minutes in a season once in his career. A grand total of 105 games. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t look good in practice or something, but I would hardly call that getting ‘a shot for the last 7 years straight’.
That’s called getting shots and blowing them.
He must be like 28 by now
Mitchell to the Nets.. Knicks fans would riot.
Actually, Knicks fans like myself would not care.
Imo Mitchell and RJ is not a good mix. Very similar games. Chemistry is big for team success.
Donovan to Knicks I think would still be the best outcome for everyone.
Spida for RJ, Reddish and Fouriner plus 4 firsts
Jazz just load up of picks and go full rebuild.
Great year to do it with this draft class having 2 absolute superstars at the top of it in Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson.
Just load up on picks and young players and get a superstar this year in the draft.
You’d be aiming for Scoot or Victor and already have RJ and Reddish so look for a young 4.
Idk maybe Mike Conley for Monte Morris and Rui Hachimura.
Get back picks for Clarkson, Beverly and Bogi and waive Beasley if you can’t find a deal for him, then leave yourself looking like.
Morris RJ Reddish Hachimura Kessler
Butler Fouriner Bolmaro Vanderbilt Azubiuke
Get yourself a Scoot or Victor and have a solid young core with like another 10 first round picks to spend.
Donovan Mitchell will be happy to be in New York. They will have a strong team with him, Brunson, DRose, Randle, Robinson, Toppin and co. Even if they don’t win a bunch of games they should make the playoffs and should be able to again make moves next offseason. Chris Brickley who works a lot with Donovan is based in NY so he would probably get alot better even tho he’s all ready an all star.
Knicks would be happy with a genuine superstar on their team and a core to build around him with.
Hey sincere compliment here. This is the most educated approach I have heard this year. You know the value of the trade. You also know Conleys value is not as high as people think. It is hard being a fan listening to jazz fans say why don’t we just trade for Dame. We will give Conley and bogey. And they are serious. Assume portland would just say OK. And they have no knowledge of salary cap. But you get it.
As for knicks fans they think they can get mitchell without RJ. Not happening. Your trade makes the most sense. I would be fine doing it as well if it were only 3 picks. You matched the salary nice too. Please comment more.
If the heat trade is legit I would take that too. Herro, Robinson, vincent and 3 picks and a swap. The knicks deal is good. But I don’t believe it has been offered. The Miami trade has been offered at least according to sources. Herro is 22 and puts those numbers up on the bench. Robinson is overpaid but 45% from 3 is unreal. I think we should go in on the full rebuild as you do or we run the risk of being like Portland for years
Great comments.
Yeah I think after the Gobert trade, there no way your going to be a success team anytime soon unless you move quickly to either unload Mitchell for a young player with all star potential (Herro or RJ for example) plus picks and just go full rebuild. Or alternatively you move quickly to add someone quality next to Donovan who is roughly the same age and who’s game will complement his. For example maybe Julius Randle, maybe John Collins, maybe Ben Simmons but someone of that ilk. 23-28 all star or very close to it and with potential to get better, plus plays a position other than SG and can work well with Donovan Mitchell.
But yeah thank you for the compliments and praise. I’m just an overall basketball fan and love the whole trading, player movements, projections side of things. So interesting to see how moves work out and how things could’ve been had they gone in another direction. But anyways thanks for the praise
Not even close to enough assets for Mitchell you are proposing. Utah got more for Rudy and he is a lesser player. NY fans need to lay off the crack pipe.
You sound like the nets saying we need to get what gobert got. And they all say thats Minnesotas problem. Durrant will get less than rudy got let alone mitchell. And no Rudy is not the lesser player and it will show bad. Teams know that too. Thats why Rudy offers outside of Minnesota are higher than what was offered for Mitchell. Mitchell is 256th rank defender. Yep. Max player too. Shot 29 percent from field in playoffs. Highs in turnovers. Got ran over by brunson and made rudy help. Is a 6-0 shooting guard. When has that worked. AI is the best at that size and couldn’t. Mitchells value isn’t close to Gobert and every team knows it. Thats why nothing is happening. He is just a fancy name and extremely poor leader as well
Actually, teams value Mitchell more than Gobert. You’re forgetting that Mitchell is a very popular player and person across the league. He brings a lot more positives than just basketball skills.
Donovan is much more marketable than Gobert and Durant combined. Durant’s too salty and Gobert isn’t as flashy. Why do you think Knicks fans want him so bad? They love star players who make big plays. Add the ties he has to both Miami and NY and it makes him even more appealing to both. He’s good PR to the max.
That being said, I don’t think the Jazz should trade him. He’s only 26. Plenty of time to keep improving and build around.
The alternative is to trade him to the team with the #1 pick next Summer. Don’t you think that team would do that? Worth looking into, at that point. That’s more of a sure thing then trading him now and hoping for a top pick.
NY won’t get Mitchell. They don’t have the assets.
They have 8 1sts available to trade. Most assets of any team.
Overall, New York now has 11 future first-round picks and 11 future second-round picks over the next seven yrs……
Not one was given up for Brunson. Only tells me. There is a trade coming. I just hope it gets Randle out of town.
It is midnight in NY. You need to stop drunk posting. Awful trade proposal.
Cobi, your obviously got some issues having to say how bad my idea is three times in the space of 10 minutes. You also obviously are new around here too cause you have no idea who I support or where I am from. Been commenting here for a little while now Brodie.
As for your criticism I think your wrong. As someone else says above they have a bunch of first round picks to trade (more than most) they also have a bunch of young players (RJ, Reddish, Quickly, Toppin, to name a few) and have guys to salary matching.
If you think it’s that bad why don’t you suggest something else you think is more realistic or just another proposal. That’s the problem with a lot of people, love to tear down others ideas with no fact or information and have no other alternative ideas themselves…
Crushed is the newbie. Encouraging tazza to propose more trades is funny.
This problem of Jazz fans wanting Lillard is just more unlikely speculation, not on this site I know of.
Right or wrong, Utah has no intention of trading Mitchell.
“Spida for RJ, Reddish and Fouriner plus 4 firsts”
I know CobiEven is trashing you and saying this isn’t enough for Mitchell, but I would not make this deal if I were the Knicks. They already signed Brunson. A backcourt of Brunson and Mitchell would be undersized and one of the worst defensive backcourts in NBA history. On top of that, you’re sacrificing RJ’s excellent defense.
And they traded a first for Reddish just last year, so that’s like giving up five 1sts, too. What would the Knicks lineup even look like? Brunson/Mitchell/???/Randle/Robinson? I actually think the Knicks would be worse.
Yeah the undersize thing would be an issue but I think under Thibs it’ll be more about effort than size.
As for Reddish and giving up a first, I believe it was reported Thibs didn’t even want him and was unhappy with the front office getting him. Obviously it was done with the viewing of attracting Zion Williamson, is my guess.
Then lastly as for the line up yeah it would look messy. You’d need to get a SF via a trade for FA.
I can’t really see it happening and I wouldn’t do it myself I just see it as the most likely situation. Donovan is a NY guy, I could just see him as a Knick. Jazz I could see wanting RJ and picks and Knicks as a franchise are proven to be dumb enough to just jump into things. Maybe Thibs and Spida could make it all work or maybe it makes them worse know who’s
Why would you waive Beasley, in any scenario? The guy isn’t afraid to shoot and is actually a good shooter. He also can play solid D. Just needs to stay focused and held accountable.
That being said, I don’t think they should bring back Whiteside. I don’t think he can focus for very long. Probably needs medication, which isn’t a bad thing, just not what this team needs going forward. Better to focus on the young bigs they brought in.
Wizards wouldn’t make that deal. They just traded for a PG, so they probably have little interest in taking on Conley unless a pick is coming back to them. Imo Conley has negative trade value right now, Jazz will have to incentivize another team to take him off the Jazz’s books.
Those 3 guys all still fill fits on their roster, so it makes sense theyd consider bringing them back. I still expect Conley and Clarkson to be moved
I expect anyone too much above Don’s age will likely be shopped around, if not already. Zanik sounded like they already have trades in mind, that they’re probably waiting to complete.
The national guys seem to think everyone’s waiting for the Nets to make their moves. I could see that being the case because the Jazz are offering quality veterans. Any team looking for vets could be looking at Nets players as well.
I agree with them to look for trades to happen or seed during the Vegas SL. Best time for everyone to meet in person across the league.
Ainge said he thinks Mitchell can be the PG. 1500 minutes tops and not in the playoffs, if so.
Juancho is worth another shot.
I agree with posters saying Brunson n Mitchell is not a good pairing. RJ is a great defender and is a good mix with Brunson. I agree with that. Was Not a big Brunson guy. But this pairing can change my mind.
I’m all about this rebuild. Have been since Phil started it.
But Randle has to be moved. I’d prefer it before the season starts.
The way Utah is moving now. They will not say no to a good offer for Mitchell. But which team is doing that. Who is going to go get Mitchell.
We don’t need him. Unless they take Randle of course.
