The Jazz are reportedly open to listening to trade inquiries on Donovan Mitchell, but that doesn’t mean they’re shopping the All-Star guard or that he’s likely to be moved this offseason, according to reports from Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report and Tony Jones of The Athletic.
Both Fischer and Jones say the Jazz remain focused on keeping Mitchell and building around him, but would consider changing their stance if they get a significant enough trade offer. Fischer suggests such an offer would have to “rival or even surpass” what Utah got for Rudy Gobert.
The front office has been in constant contact with Mitchell’s representatives, according to Jones, who says those conversations have been positive and the 25-year-old hasn’t asked to be dealt. However, Jones acknowledges that the Jazz will likely take a step back in 2022/23 after moving Gobert, and Mitchell “wants to win at a high level,” so the team’s next moves will be crucial.
Fischer likens the situation to James Harden‘s final year in Houston, when the Rockets rebuffed trade offers for P.J. Tucker and made moves to try to convince Harden to stick around, only to see him eventually request a trade. That doesn’t mean Mitchell will take the same path, but some executives around the league believe he and the Jazz are headed for a break-up, whether it happens this offseason or in a year or two.
Although Jones says several other teams have made “serious overtures,” the Knicks have long been viewed as one of the primary suitors for Mitchell. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said during an appearance on Get Up (video link) that “some people” view it as inevitable that the former lottery pick will ultimately end up in New York.
“New York can offer some combination of multiple picks, RJ Barrett, Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley, and that’s probably the benchmark any team is going to have to beat in order to get Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz,” an assistant general manager told Bleacher Report.
The Heat have also been frequently linked to Mitchell, but Andy Larsen of The Salt Lake Tribune says Miami made an offer for the former Louisville standout earlier in the offseason and the Jazz found it “insufficient.”
According to Fischer, who polled about two dozen executives in Las Vegas, Barrett has more trade value than Tyler Herro, Miami’s most logical trade centerpiece, though it’s unclear whether Utah has serious interest in either player — both are expected to be seeking maximum-salary (or near-max) extensions that would begin in 2023/24.
Here’s more on the Jazz:
- The Jazz have explored a potential sign-and-trade deal for Collin Sexton that would send Mike Conley to Cleveland, sources tell Bleacher Report. However, Fischer admits that Conley may not fit the Cavaliers‘ roster and suggests that if those talks gain serious traction, another Utah player would probably have to be involved. Conley did generate some interest from the Clippers before they signed John Wall, Fischer adds, but it’s trickier to find a logical landing spot for him at this point.
- Leading up to the June 23 draft, the Jazz were looking for first-round picks in the 15-to-25 range for Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, or Royce O’Neale, Fischer reports. The team ended up moving O’Neale for a 2023 first-rounder.
- All of the players the Jazz acquired from Minnesota in the Gobert trade are considered available, Fischer says. “They are open to moving everyone,” one assistant GM told Bleacher Report.
- Jarred Vanderbilt and Patrick Beverley are among the players from that Gobert trade who have drawn interest, per Fischer. Sources tell Bleacher Report that the Lakers and Heat are a couple of the teams with some interest in Beverley.

Conley is the same size as Sexton at 6’1, he’s 10 years older and owed 2/$47 mil. What’s the point?
Conley is a really good defender, and a real PG, but regardless, I dont see the point in them making the deal for him, with what they have in Cleveland already…and I wouldnt see the point in Utah trying to add Sexton to what they currently have either
@formerlyz
It makes more sense for Utah because Sexton is a very similar player to Mitchell. The above shows the statistical comparisons of the two. I muddled it up by mentioning Conley as a trade option which I should’ve put in a separate post. But Utah could replace Mitchell with a similar but younger and cheaper option that can grow with the new guys. From Cavs perspective you get a more respected and decorated vet but truly I don’t think it’s worth it. Id rather have Sexton who I know wants to be in Cleveland as part of an up and coming team. From Donovan’s perspective he’s been on winning teams and wouldn’t likely see Cavs as an upgrade that’s going to win a title. He’d likely want out. I’d rather they keep Sexton and continue to build both the culture and hopefully fine tune the team into something much better. They could probably still use a star vet somewhere but let it happen organically when the time is right.
Those are basic stats. Impact metrics have it a blow out. So does offensive and defensive rating. One is a plus and the other is a big minus.
So Mitchell is 3 points better on offense and 7 points better on defense. Those are likely career numbers I guess and Sexton has gotten a lot better on defense while Mitchell doesn’t give a sh!t about defense. Both are bad, but Sexton worse.
3 point volume is another issue.
Sexton 5 3s per 36 and career while watching his TS% go lower.
Mitchell over 10 3s per 36 while his TS % has risen every single year he’s been in the NBA.
Mitchell
@QB1
What’s the difference between 114 Otrg vs 111? Sexton shot more efficiently from the floor overall .48 to .45% in Sexton’s favor and a slight edge to Sexton in 3pt shors at 48% to 47%. Does the fact Mitchell takes 10 3s per game vs Sexton who takes 4 per game a “good thing” seeing that Sexton shoots them at a higher %???? Seems like Mitchell should be taking less. He’s 3rd in 3 pt attempts but he’s not even top 100 (#101) in 3pt FG made. Mitchell is better defensively and that’s really about it but it’s not like Mitchell is a defensive stalwart either.
That difference from Sexton and Mitchell is summed up best in the offensive and defensive rating. With Mitchell as a +3 and Sexton as a -7.
@QB1
A +3 isn’t significant at all of a difference in Otrg and the formula are very, very misleading. I mean Obi Toppin and DeAndre Jordan have a Ofrtg of 120. Is anyone going to say either is a better offensive player than Sexton or Mitchell (or Steph Curry with a 115)??? So many of these stats can be misleading or misused and when it’s that obvious of a difference then I tend to disregard them. Sexton and Mitchell are very simple prices.
That stuff is team dependent…
@formerly
of course. so is +/- but ppl use it so often.
Bull. You cannot compare a center or a guard, but you can compare two guards or two centers.
Whatever the accuracy of advanced stats, they’re better than listing all the simple stats. Again: comparison. No advanced stat makes any sense on its own. What is a PER point?— nothing on the scoreboard. It just aggregates and compares to a standard of 15.
Yes they can be be misused, especially if the user is to dumb to figure them out, or smart enough to manipulate them.
And for defense, nothing works great. A few give a general idea, but no stat distinguishes clutch play from garbage-time play.
PERs/onoffs last year:
Mitchell 22 & minus1
Conley 17 & plus3 (subject to decline)
Sexton 18 & minus2 (last healthy year 20/21)
Conley has a huge career on-off, and it’s not like he gets garbage minutes to boost the numbers. A smart coach pulls him if possible since he wears down.
Of course formerlyz values the eye test, because he impresses himself with his ability to judge, i.e., Teams must have certain rotations with certain wings.
I never know what people mean when they use +\- and I doubt if they do either. There are different +/-s. Bas.Ref.’s on-off is one kind but espn has their own.
Cavs need another PG for one year. Conley’s contract has 2/$47 left, causing a luxury tax both years probably.
I value advanced stats, but also not singularly. I use them in conjunction with the knowledge of the player’s actual skillset, who is on the team, who actually plays around them, and the advanced stats, plus per 100 possession numbers
I dont understand how you can still criticize the idea that 2 way wing players are the most valuable commodities in the NBA. I only suggest a team needs it when they actually need it. It’s not just some made up random thought concept. It’s a team that has no pieces in an extremely important position needing to add those pieces to be better…but not every team needs help in that area, and then for those teams, you see me mention those other areas, rather than adding more pieces on the wing.
Jalen Suggs, Wagner bros, RJ Hampton, Terrence Ross & Orl’s 2023 & 2027 top10 protected 1sts should do it. Perfect trade for both teams
Switch Suggs for Anthony and it might work but you’d have to drop the protections on the picks to really get Utah’s attention.
If I’m Orl I’d rather give up another 1st than take away the protections on the picks. Most I’d do is make em top5 protected… Utah would definitely rather have Suggs than Cole. He’s the perfect pg of the future/face of the franchise for them. Orlando would prob rather keep Cole too tbh. He’s more ready to contribute now & is more of a scorer which they’d need off the bench
Pat bev is a good fit next to Mitchell, really if they moved Conley/Beasley and a first for Turner/hield they would be better than last year with the depth they acquired.
Something like that actually sounds decent. But is it enough for Mitchell to stay interested? Donovan may be eyeing a team like the Heat and top four seed.
Everything written here in this article and all the quotes from the parties involved tell me Donovan Mitchell is on his way out of town. You can’t openly discuss someone being available like this and then go into Camp expecting the player to be 100% on board. I don’t see the Jazz improving their roster this summer and becoming the contender that Donovan Mitchell desires. Jazz are holding out for the best offer and then they’ll ship him out.
The only people I see talking about this is the media, which has been the case for 2 or 3 years now
I think Utah wants offers to come in. They probably won’t act on them. Some fans (money) will want to see the team altered but not in a rebuild. The owners are not rich and have built a rep for being favored (until the playoffs lol).
I’m sure Mitchell has asked to see what his trade value is. With that intelligence on what teams are looking for and paying the most money for, he’ll be 100% on board to get that pay day.
Is anyone shocked that the Lakers have more interest in the older Beverley than the younger Vanderbilt?
Although at 34, PatBev might still bring down their average age.
The Lakers have enough guys that can defend at the 4, but they also dont need more guards, so my guess is their interest in Beverley would be in a scenario where they move off Westbrook, and need defense and shooting at that spot, but it would likely take a lot of shuffling in that case.
They need another 3 and D option on the wing, and their best bet for that might be a summer league guy out there, and then a scoring/spacing 4 off the bench
Well that joke was so last season. Since none of those older guys are on the team. So pat would actually make the avg age go up. Since you know they only have 2 count them 2 guys over the age of 30
How much do you want to bet that LeBron will insist that there will be at least 5 over 30 by opening night? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was even higher.
Plus several on that “current” Lakers roster will be G Leaguers. I would wager that most of them will be replaced on the real roster by older vets.
Pretty low since they have only one roster spot open , the new players they brought in might not be any good but they are definitely under 30
Those roster spots will open once O’Neal and Pippen and several others get cut and sent to the G League. And then right before the season starts, they will sign 2-3 FAs. Happens every year.
You’re forgetting that AD has the body of a 70 year old. =)
I think a lot of this is just more media noise. I feel like theres very little reason for the Knicks to pursue at this point, and the Heat makes no sense for him with what is on their roster, and even Beverley only makes some sense for them if they were to move Lowry. The cleveland rumor makes even less sense for both teams actually. They added defenders around Mitchell and Bogdanovic, so I think they need shooting on the wing; not necessarily 3 and D guys, but shooting in general, as well as replacing what they lost in Paschall as a small ball 5 that can also space the floor
Teams that make the most sense for me, although I still think Utah isnt trading him right now, and is way more likely to trade Conley and Clarkson, are Charlotte, Dallas, SA, Washington, and maybe Orlando, although Orlando doesn’t really have a great offer they can make
Rozier, Jalen McDaniels, Bouknight, JT Thor, 2023 1st, 2025 1st, 2023 Utah 2nd for Donovan Mitchell
Tim Hardaway Jr, Maxi Kleber, Josh Green, 2024 1st, 2026 1st, 2028 1st, 2025 2nd for Donovan Mitchell (you could add another 2nd to that, or Bullock and Clarkson to the deal b/c I do feel it’s slightly lacking from Dallas side, although Green does give them a 3 and d wing they need, Kleber is expiring, and Hardaway can replace Clarkson or he or Beasley can potentially be flipped)
Josh Primo, Malaki Branham, Josh Richardson, Zach Collins, 2023 Charlotte 1st, 2024 1st, 2025 2nd for Donovan Mitchell
Monte Morris, Will Barton, Deni Avdija, Rui Hachimura, 2025 1st, 2027 1st, 2023 Boston 2nd, 2026 2nd for Donovan Mitchell, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (This would have to wait until Morris and Barton can be moved next month, and maybe you add another 2nd to offset NAW)
Chuma Okeke, Jalen Suggs, Gary Harris, Moritz Wagner, 2023 1st, 2024 1st, 2025 Denver 1st, 2026 Milwaukee 2nd for Donovan Mitchell
Of these, the Charlotte or Spurs offers seem the best…I dont really see many other fits anywhere else, at least at this point. Maybe if certain teams hadnt recently done other things, but otherwise, I think these are the main teams that would/should be interested, although again, I dont see him being moved right now
Why would they accept any heat offer without Bam for Mitchell?
Herro has little value because of expiring contract.
To me,
Looney has more trade value than RJ Barrett and Herro.
Why?
Some young players are demanding max contracts.
Mike Conley and Bojan Bogdanovic for Micheal Porter Jr, Ish Smith and Zeke Nnaji.
Nuggets get Bojian to replace Porter who has injury concerns, Bojan is arguably a better defender and more efficient shooter. Conley would be a very good back up and would be perfect with Murray returning from injury.
For the Jazz it’s worth taking the risk on Porter to make Donovan happy if you want to rebuild a competitive team. Good start but more moves to make. But for now you’d line up Beverly Spida Porter Jr Vanderbilt Kessler and off the bench Clarkson Beasley Bolmaro Gay and Azubiuke.
I would like Cavs to go after Jaylen Nowell before his stats get gaudy, but the only trade-worthy salary-add Wolves have is DeAngelo Russell at $31mil expiring… and he is a freind of Towns blah blah.
Wolves have 6 guards and 6 frontcourters, and are depleted by the Gobert trade, so they might be interested in trading Nowell $1.9mil for a couple of Cavs forwards between Osman 7.4m, Windler 4.0m, Stevens 1.8m or Wade 1.9m.
Wolves have a $4.4mil TPE, which could absorb Windler, then Nowell could go for Stevens… Two trades to get around TPE rules officially.
If Wolves were willing to move DeRussell, then Levert or a Sexton s&t could be used, Sexton getting the $20mil+ he wants.
I could see Nowell being a fit for things the Cavs need for sure, although I also think he gives Minnesota some of what they need, with shooting at that position. I like RJ Nembhard, not b/c of this year’s summer league, but I liked him with the Heat last year. He minds me of Will Barton. I think he can give some of what you’re looking for if he gets opportunities
