The Jazz are willing to listen to offers for All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweets.
Utah had previously turned aside calls regarding Mitchell but is now willing to listen to trade scenarios.
In fact, the Jazz are open to making trades involving anyone on their roster, but Mitchell is obviously the most coveted piece, Wojnarowski adds in a separate tweet.
Following the Rudy Gobert blockbuster with the Timberwolves, reports stated that the Jazz were looking to build around Mitchell. However, it’s not all that surprising Utah may shift gears and go into rebuild mode after the Mitchell-Gobert partnership failed to get the Jazz to a Finals appearance.
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reported that rival executives had heard Utah executive Danny Ainge isn’t convinced Mitchell can be the face of a contending franchise. GM Justin Zanik didn’t label Mitchell as “untouchable” but made it clear last week that moving the All-Star guard wasn’t part of the team’s current plans.
Earlier last week, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said that Mitchell wasn’t on the verge of asking for a trade.
Mitchell signed a designated rookie max extension in 2020 and has four years left on his contract ($30.4MM, $32.6MM, $34.8MM and $37.1MM, ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes in a tweet. The last year is a player option.
Despite the addition of Jalen Brunson, the Knicks can be expected to try to put together a package and make a serious offer for Mitchell, sources told Tony Jones of The Athletic (Twitter link). However, the Jazz’s asking price is sky high, Jones adds.
The Heat could be in the mix, too. The Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang notes that the Heat have avoided triggering a hard cap in their offseason moves in order to keep their options open for a blockbuster deal involving a player such as Mitchell (Twitter link). Miami has made its interest in Mitchell clear to Utah, Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel tweets, with speculation that such a deal would involve Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson and draft picks.
The Jazz got a major haul for Gobert and presumably would want as much, or more, for Mitchell. He’s averaged 23.9 PPG, 4.5 APG and 4.2 RPG in 345 NBA regular-season contests. He’s also had some big postseason performances, averaging 28.3 PPG, 4.9 APG and 4.2 RPG in 39 playoff games.
Hahahaha….and the Knicks got Brunson….
And why can’t they get Mitchell? He’s not a true point.
They can get him…and get absolutely roasted on defense in the process.
But hypothetically speaking, what would it take to get him? RJ, Obi, Rose, some firsts? I don’t think that gets them there unless the Jazz are willing to extend RJ for what will probably be an overpay unless he takes another step or two.
If they aren’t, Quickley, Obi, Cam, Rose, and firsts?
would have to include Randle or Fournier to match up salaries
Mitchell will make 30.35 mil this year. RJ/Obi/Rose is 10.9/5.35/14.52 = 30.77 mil. Am I missing something (I’m not good with cap stuff)?
And Quickley/Obi/Cam/Rose = 2.32/5.35/5.95/14.52 = 28.14 mil. A little short but in the ballpark.
@Shea: Utah would be an under the tax team, so they don’t have to match salaries perfectly, at this point. This link is great if you want to piddle around with potential trades and see how the numbers will or won’t work: link to fanspo.com
Yes … Mitchell and Brunson in a NY backcourt would easily be the worst defensive backcourt in the league (.
Interestingly enough, Mitchell Robinson’s contract with NY is the only one that is not official yet. I wonder if they are trying to navigate a sign-and-trade with Utah, who sent out Gobert and could use a starting center while Walker Kessler develops. In that scenario, the Jazz would get RJ Barrett ($10.9MM expiring), Mitchell Robinson and 1st round picks … while the Knicks would get Mitchell ($30.3MM next year of 4 year contract)
Further explaining … once Mitchell Robinson signs his contract, he becomes ineligible to be traded. So I find it odd that NY made the Brunson and Hartenstein contracts official, but did not with him. Something could be up.
Brunson isn’t a true point either. This is so on brand for the thirsty Knicks.
“Brunson isn’t a true point”, dude averaged 7.5 assists per games when Luka was out. Shutup.
It’s the only thing that his truly is.
They don’t have the assets for him anyway
7 first rounders the next 3 years alone, contracts to match salary, young players with upside. How don’t the Knicks have assets to make this deal?
Those 1st rounders are heavily protected, the young players are mediocre at best and NOT coveted by the rest of the NBA (rightfully so), and the contracts to match salaries are basically all albatross contracts.
The Knicks are a a disaster and probably couldn’t get Donovan even if they were the only bidder. Those “assets” are not inticing, to say the least.
“Those 1st rounders are heavily protected” Incorrect, 3 of those 7 are their own picks, which obviously are NOT protected. So the package would be a mix of unprotected and protected pics. Two of their own unprotected picks, plus 4 protected picks, could be dealt.
This seems something of a stretch. Yes the ptikc are protected. He knicks young players aren’t superstars but plenty have promise and I’m sure other nba teams would be interested. Fournier deal is a team option after next year so not the worst deal in thr world. Could other teams offer more enticing deals? Probably, but hating on the knicks just for being the knicks doesn’t really apply here realistically
Umm, when does it NOT apply?
So at least you’re willing to admit it’s actually not about the facts just being a knicks hater
Theone23’s facts are more convincing than yours.
Lmao his “facts” are more convincing. Everyone is throwing out opinions on here. The only facts would be coming from front office people in the nba. You already admitted that hating on the knicks for being the knicks always applies so seems clear no convincing was needed. You knew what you were looking for.
Cry
Zing
Depends what Utah wants ofc-
If its a mostly picks package NYK surely competes…especially if they take all the protections off their own picks
If it’s ready made players they prolly fall behind the pack
Rose Cam Toppin IQ meet the salary match and have no dead money (a requirement from Utah) + boatload picks …
That offer competes but Utah will probably have 5 similar to sift thru. This deal would take Nyk deep into lux tax by 2024 but Id hope that wouldn’t be a concern today
What’s your point?
A complete rebuild – r.i.p. the Jazz?
Were they ever truly alive?
LeVert, Markkanen, and a couple firsts, final offer. I’m obviously kidding, but I’d much rather get him than like Durant, because he fits the timeline much better
The problem is they won’t get more for him than Gobert, Minny massively overpaid.
Agreed. The standard is high for players like Donovan Mitchell and Kevin Durant and have gotten even higher just because of an overprice of Rudy Gobert.
Don’t get the overpaid sentiment. Utah got a bunch mid level role players, bench warmers and what will be most likely late 1st Rd picks for a three time DPOY, three time all-star and 4 time all NBA calibers of player.
@taco
Well those picks can become a lot better if Utah trades Mitchell and goes full rebuild.
They’re Timberwolves picks, how does Utah’s success have an effect on those picks? There own 23 and 25 1sts would get better.
misread your comment
Utah got five 1sts (one being Walker Kessler, who went 22nd overall). They also got Beasley and Beverly, who could maybe net them something at the trade deadline. Plus, Bolmaro, who was a 1st just two years ago, and Vanderbilt, who’s shown great rebounding skills.
I like Gobert a lot but that’s too much to give up for a defense-only player on a massive contract, no matter how good he is defensively.
The fact that you think Gobert is “offense-only” is part of the problem. Sure he can’t handle the ball or shoot, but he’s still effective on offense.
Huh?
I said ‘defense-only’ and it is true. He can finish and that’s about it. Zero ball-handling, zero passing, zero shooting. He’s good and pick-and-roll and offensive rebounding, but his offense is almost completely system-based.
Gobert is lethal on as the roll man in the pick and roll. He sets great picks and stretches the floor vertically as a lob target.
22nd is a late 1st, Beasley is a solid role player, Bev might net a couple 2nds, Balmero went 23rd, it takes more than 8.4 rpg to be a great rebounder. The Wolves should win between 50-60 games a year for the foreseeable future, none of picks will be in the lottery.
You’re just spinning it all into a negative. They got five 1sts, two solid role players, and two young players with potential for Gobert and his massive contract. That is an absurd overpay.
And you’re wrong about Vanderbilt. It’s 8.4 rebounds in only 25 minutes per game. That makes him a great rebounder.
Can the Sixers go and get him?
Sure they can, if they flip Embiid for assets first..
Well that would defeat the purpose
Yep the Knicks have plenty of assets for Mitchell!
Emphasis on the first 3 letters of the word ASSet
Ayton screws up the Suns deal for Durant
Miami turns it’s attention to Mitchell.
Nets stuck with unhappy Durant :(
Ainge looking to destroy another franchise. Not sure if Kevin McHale will be around to bail him out this time
He destroyed the Celtics? He won a ring and drafted a huge portion of the roster that played in the finals last season…
Nah, that was all McHale. People forget how trash Celtics were for like 5 years after Ainge showed up until McHale gifted KG to him
This comment lookin…. Not great.
Get on the phone to Connolly with the Timberpuppies – HE has already proved that he’s a sucker by the haul he gave up to get Gobert. Utah could get 5 players and 5 alternate year First Round Draft Choices through 2040.
The Timberpuppies could also be convinced to throw in the NBA Draft Rights to “Hardware” Henk Norel
Lol you’re freakin weird dude. Loved your posts over the years.
If I’m OKC I’m calling them. Mitchell could really help Chet, Josh and other young players
Do you really think they will get Mitchell without giving up Chet or Josh? I guess it is possible since they have like 97% of all draft picks over the next decade, but if I am Utah I would insist on at least one of them. Maybe both.
Lol.
Why is the heat offer that good that they are involved in everything. Yes herro is a good young player, but is Duncan Robinson really that desirable? Has what like 4 years left at 16 Mil/year and was a liability in the playoffs. Stats went down this year.
Yeah, it starts with Herro. Duncan is just for salary.
Better than trading for an oft injured soon to be 34 year old Durant even though for next year or 2 Durant will be better if healthy.. after they Mitchell is way better with much longer future to build around
If Utah is in serious REBUILD mode
Why not also go into
Serious RENAME mode ????
JAZZ ?????
In UTAH ??????
Wish they would send the “Jazz” name back to New Orleans.
Are there any Pelicans in Utah? They could just switch names.
If Brunson is the reason the NYK don’t forfeit their most of their draft picks for balance of the decade to obtain Mitchell, then Brunson was a truly great signing. Obviously, Brunson is not relevant to a Mitchell pursuit, except that perhaps it making sense to see what they have with Brunson before adding another high beta player.
Jesus reading this after the fungi hit…
Mitchell’s better than Paul Pierce, don’t see why Ainge can’t build a championship roster around him. Only reason is he might want out before the deals are done.
Strongly disagree
Pierce’s dried up sperm is better than Mitchell will ever be
I didn’t bash Pierce, the dudes in the Hall of Fame but if Mitchell continues on his current path he’ll be there one day as well.
I like Mitchell a lot, but he aint on no path like Pierce was.
He’s tanking.
Jazz need to rebuild. Mitchell had a lousy shootout % in playoff games. Aim GE is right, he is not one to build around, but would be a great second guy.
Ainge not Aim GE, shooting not shootout, my bad. Sorry.
How about Mitchell Gay and Bogdano to Cavs for Sexton Widler Osman Okoro Mark and draft picks
Was asking Daniel Sanja what his point was about Brunson.
Hard to see any better offers than the Knicks with RJ and possibly Cam Reddish plus picks.
Knicks have loads of picks and I feel like there would be a strong mutual interest between them and Donovan Mitchell.
Looking at other teams, that Heat offer looks a little light, Herro is nice but he’s not even a starter… Plus they don’t have that many picks
I know Im on my own with this idea but I still like the idea of SGA plus a first or two for Mitchell.
Just the idea of Giddey Mitchell and Chet sounds really good for building your future around. Giddey the pass first point with good size. Mitchell the to go scorer and great clutch finisher. Chet with the ultimate skill set, can just do it all.
Other under the radar teams..
Cavs: Mitchell for Jarrett Allen, Colin Sexton and Okoro?
Magic: Jonothan Isaacs, Jalen Suggs, Terrance Ross and picks
Magic could actually be a really cool option. Paolo and Spida leading a new look Magic side.
Knicks are not giving up RJ for NOBODY …..
No One ….. the next JB is staying in NYC
…must’ve missed the chapter on double negatives in his Hooked on Phonics audiotapes.
YAWN ……. we don’t want him we don’t need him. Keep the picks something better will open up. I like Brunson and RJ backcourt
Correction you don’t him.
The Jazz will be other team in deal for Kyrie, KD, or Simmons
Jazz get Brandon Ingram, picks, and the Pelicans nickname.
NO gets Mitchell and the Jazz nickname back where it belongs.
The absurdity of Utah Pelicans is no worse than Utah Jazz.
I stand corrected. Utah Pelicans is less absurd.
“Utah is well known for its American White Pelicans, in no small part because of the pelican rookery on Gunnison Island in a remote part of the Great Salt Lake. During nesting season Gunnison Island is home to up to 20,000 pelicans estimated to be 10 – 20% of the entire population of the species.”
So are we going to have the LA Timberwolves when the Lakers is sent back to Minnesota?
People really need to get over this idea. The Utah Jazz has been around as a brand name for far longer than the New Orleans Jazz ever was. Who cares if the nickname doesn’t fit? It didn’t bother the owners when they moved there so long ago.
Just cause somethings been around for a long time doesn’t mean it’s right. I’d love for NO to get their name back. It makes sense. And why tf would they have to swap? Utah could be something completely different. LA wolves? Stfuuuu
If I’m not mistaken, there are lakes in LA.
But no Jazz in Utah. No good Jazz anyway.
Who cares if it makes sense? They’re not gonna change a name that’s full of history. The Utah Jazz is a recognized name by fans all over the world. They have been around for decades, they made two finals, they have two Hall of Famers in Stockton and Malone, why would you change that?
People who want to change the name probably only started following the league 5 years ago and think everything has to be their way.
So you guys don’t think that the trade works?
Yeah, I’d be down as fan of the team based out of Salt Lake City.
I personally like Ingram over Mitchell. The Pels have the talent and picks without Ingram to get him. They could offer 4 of Graham, Nance, Hayes, Alvarado, Daniel’s, Murphy, Lewis, or Jones with some picks. Graham and Nance would probably have to be 2 of them for matching salary. But, that’s still most likely a better package than they’d get from another team. CJ, Mitchell, Ingram, and Zion would be absolutely lethal.
AD, Mitchell and Conley to the Nets.
Kyrie, Randle and Bogs to LA.
Westbrook, Fournier and 6 first round picks to Utah.
Durant to NY.
Why would the Jazz want Westbrick?
They wouldn’t.
He’s an expiring deal and the Jazz are tanking this year so he helps them lose this year and then opens up 50 mil at the end of the season.
@emac
Lakers have made it clear they aren’t trading AD at all. They want a big 3 of LBJ, AD and Kyrie.
I know. I heard Kyrie isn’t going there too as well as Utah wanting 8 first round picks for Mitchell and the Nets wanting multiple stars and picks for Durant. I file those with my lotto dreams and the asking price on my house.
They can want, they can lose or they can accept that the cost of dumping Westbrook is much more than the Knicks just paid to dump Kemba, Noel and Burks.
As much as they want a big three they don’t have the assets to buy a third star. At the same time if they don’t do something it’s over.
Bron and AD are their only assets with value and flipping AD into Kyrie, Randle and Bogs or Fourier, Conley or ??? while also getting rid of Westbrook is about as good a deal as I can imagine them finding.
I think the Cavs could work something out via sign and trade for Sexton plus Markkanen and fuller plus 3 1sts for Mitchell and Pat Bev. But I’d rather stick with Sexton and Markkanen honestly. I’m intrigued by their big lineup with three 7ters. Also, there’s not much difference between Sexton and Mitchell if you compare there 20-21 (CS) vs Mitchell’s 21-22. Look it up.
Mitchell for Jaylen Brown
Celtics would laugh and hang up the phone immediately.
No. We all know Ainge loves Smart. Smart, White, and picks. Utah would probably insist on Timelord. Which the Celtics won’t do it.
@kenly0
Why would Ainge pretty much make Smart the main piece when they’re obviously rebuilding and he’s more of a glue guy for better players?
Why?
Like I said, this is the right season to tank, Wembanyama is worth tanking for.
So was Darko Milicic. So was Greg Oden. There are no guarantees in the draft.
I’d say that Shaq, LeBron, Tim and more than a few others have been guarantees – promise vs performance
You would be tanking for a 14% chance at getting him, and that assumes you’re confident you can out tank all but 2 other teams. Some of them have developed incredible acumen at it.
Can the Mavs make a push for him? Doncic and Mitchell sounds awesome.
It would be perfect backcourt for them, but thanks to Donnie Nelson and the mind of Mark Cuban the Mavs don’t have the assets to trade for a pack of skittles.
So does Doncic and Dinwiddie, and you have that already!
Donovan Mitchell for Jonothan Issacs, Terrance Ross, a first round pick and either Cole Anthony or Jalen Suggs.
Magic line up
Cole/Suggs Spida Paolo Franz and Carter Jr
Off the bench Fultz Harris Houston Okeke and Bamba. Plus you have Hampton and Bol Bol
Spida and Paolo would be so solid. Kinda throw back to TMac and Grant Hill.
Loads of young talent and lead by two young all stars.
Jazz start the rebuild with a point guard Cole or Suggs, and Jonothan Issac at the 4, and a bunch of first round picks.
Have a whole lot of veterans you can flip for more picks (Conley, Beverly, Clarkson, Beasley, Ross and Bogi)
Tank the season out and try get Victor Wembamya. He and Issacs would be a solid big man duo.
Start next season with
Cole/Suggs Issacs Victor and like 10 future firsts
Heat shouldnt be in on this. It makes no sense for them
Other than the fact that he plays a lot like D Wade, I agree
There are multiple reasons behind it. The fit isnt great with what they currently have on the roster, and also, for the pieces it would cost, it’s not really that significant of an upgrade. I wanted him in the draft, but didnt think he would get past the Knicks at 9. It was either Mitchell, OG, or Bam for me that year, and when Utah traded for the pick with Denver, right in front of us, I knew that was that. Nobody knew OG was healthy, so it made sense he fell. We ended up with Bam, and that turned out awesome b/c he is the next guy in line as the heartbeat of the organization, behind Zo and UD
I like Donovan Mitchell a lot, but dont see any reason the Heat should trade for him now
Teams that make the most sense for me, although I still think Utah isnt trading him right now, and is way more likely to trade Conley and Clarkson, are Charlotte, Dallas, SA, Washington, and maybe Orlando, although Orlando doesn’t really have a great offer they can make
Rozier, Jalen McDaniels, Bouknight, JT Thor, 2023 1st, 2025 1st, 2023 Utah 2nd for Donovan Mitchell
Tim Hardaway Jr, Maxi Kleber, Josh Green, 2024 1st, 2026 1st, 2028 1st, 2025 2nd for Donovan Mitchell (you could add another 2nd to that, or Bullock and Clarkson to the deal b/c I do feel it’s slightly lacking from Dallas side, although Green does give them a 3 and d wing they need, Kleber is expiring, and Hardaway can replace Clarkson or he or Beasley can potentially be flipped)
Josh Primo, Malaki Branham, Josh Richardson, Zach Collins, 2023 Charlotte 1st, 2024 1st, 2025 2nd for Donovan Mitchell
Monte Morris, Will Barton, Deni Avdija, Rui Hachimura, 2025 1st, 2027 1st, 2023 Boston 2nd, 2026 2nd for Donovan Mitchell, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (This would have to wait until Morris and Barton can be moved next month, and maybe you add another 2nd to offset NAW)
Chuma Okeke, Jalen Suggs, Gary Harris, Moritz Wagner, 2023 1st, 2024 1st, 2025 Denver 1st, 2026 Milwaukee 2nd for Donovan Mitchell
Of these, the Charlotte or Spurs offers seem the best…I dont really see many other fits anywhere else, at least at this point. Maybe if certain teams hadnt recently done other things, but otherwise, I think these are the main teams that would/should be interested, although again, I dont see him being moved right now
No mention by anyone of the Raptors as a team that would have interest?
Can’t see why they wouldn’t be involved.
FVV, Mitchell, Siakim, Barnes and OG is a pretty legit starting 5 that would be together for a long time.
Makes way more sense than pursuing Durant.
How would they match salaries in that scenario? Trent, achiuwa, banton, Flynn, and brooks? I also dont see the need for Toronto. After they added Porter, they can maybe use another shooter, but they dont make sense as a team for Mitchell, in my opinion
Are you getting him for free?
Utah needs athletic and long wing defenders. They don’t want a package headlined by Herro and Robinson. They suck at D and Robinson is overrated anyway
