A potential extension for Tyler Herro will probably wait until the Heat have more clarity on the Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell trade situations, writes Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald. Herro is eligible for a rookie scale extension until the day before the 2022/23 regular season begins. If he and the team can’t agree on terms, he will become a restricted free agent next offseason.
Miami would likely have to include Herro in any package for Durant or Mitchell, but if he has an extension already in place, he would be subject to the “poison pill provision” until next July 1. That means if he’s traded between the time the extension is signed and when it takes effect, Herro’s trade value for the team that acquires him would be the average of the salaries of the final year of his rookie contract and each year of the extension. However, the outgoing salary for Miami would only be $5.7MM, which is what he will make next season.
Herro, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year and the Heat’s second leading scorer last season at 20.7 PPG, has been mentioned prominently in trade rumors with both the Nets and Jazz. Neither of those teams appear to be in a hurry to unload their stars, so Herro’s wait for an extension could drag all the way into the fall.
There’s more from the Southeast Division:
- The length of Duncan Robinson‘s contract may limit his value to the Heat on the trade market, suggests Ira Winderman of The Sun-Sentinel. Robinson is signed for the next three seasons at $16.9MM, $18.2MM and $19.4MM and he has a 50% guarantee on his $19.9MM salary for 2025/26. That adds up to about $65MM in guaranteed money, Winderman notes, which is a large investment for a player coming off a down season.
- Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports takes an inside look at the Magic’s draft night surprise, which even caught No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero off guard. Banchero said he met with Orlando officials at the draft combine, but throughout most of the process he expected to fall to the Rockets with the third pick. “All the reports were that they weren’t really considering me,” he said. “And then they made it clear before the draft that none of those reports were true and that they were very much interested in me. And so that’s when I kind of knew that it might not be Houston.”
- After going undrafted out of North Carolina, Brady Manek is hoping to be considered for an open two-way slot with the Hornets, per Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. Manek considered several possibilities before accepting a Summer League invitation from Charlotte. “I just wanted to get a chance just to be able to play, get to show what I’m about,” Manek said. “I’ve shown what I’m about. I’m not going to become a point guard overnight. I’m still Brady. I’m still going to be able to shoot it.”
Jazz want 6 first round picks
Herro to the third team for picks
Nets want
All star
Rising star
4 Firsts
Herro to the third team for picks
Duncan Robinson can have an impact if he is consistent 3 point shooter, and a team defender. As mentioned Hero may be involved in a trade, so Robinson may be a crucial in spacing the floor. Strus may be included in any trade package as well. Who knows? Actually the Heat are comfortable with Robinson if he commits to playing D. As a Heat fan, watching he can play D in spurts. His stamina is unquestioned…
His biggest issues defensively are getting called for incredibly ridiculous fouls at times. Most of the stuff about him is just dumb narratives. He is adequate enough for this roster where there are elite defenders around him. Then offensively, he struggled early in the season, and the last few games of the season, but the rest of the season, he was where he usually is, and was better in every other area. Also, even if he isnt making shots, teams are chasing him with 2-3 people off screens, so he gives them invaluable spacing
*more clarity on the KD situation. The Heat dont care about Donovan Mitchell
How does Ira still have his job? He hasnt said anything of substance or anything with any basis in reality or of any semblance of intelligence in almost 15 years
Donovan is a better fit than KD
In what universe? How does it make sense to give up assets for Mitchell? I like him. I’m not saying hes trash. I’m saying at most, it might be an incremental upgrade for now, at most, but it would take multiple pieces and all their assets to get him, so how does that make sense compared to KD, who actually does fit exponentially better by the way, and actually does make them significantly better, even with the pieces ane assets you’re giving up
Heat trading for Mitchell, giving up all those picks, assets wouldn’t move the needle, only KD would. In KD talks, Seems like the players aren’t the problem, it’s the Heat getting other teams involved to unlock additional draft picks. Either KD stays or will go to the Heat, up to KD. I feel KYRIE will be moved, Danny will use cap space to get Russ, unprotected Lakers #1 which will be valuable when Lebron leaves… Heat don’t want to max out Hero, motivated to move him…
4 team trade
Magic: Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gay
Jazz: Russ, Jalen Suggs, Talen Horton-Tucker, Nikola Jovic and 6 firsts
(4 from Orlando, 1 from LA, 1 from Miami)
Heat: Jonothan Issacs
Lakers: Bojan Bogdanovic, Terrance Ross, Duncan Robinson and Pat Beverly
Magic give up Issacs, Ross, Suggs and 4 firsts for Mitchell and Gay. Leaving them with a team most likely looking like Cole Spida Paolo Franz and Carter Jr, off the bench Fultz/RJ Harris Okeke Gay and Bamba. Makes them a playoff team or very close too it and still very young and improving.
Jazz receives back Russ on a 50mil expiring deal, then young players Suggs, THT and Jovic plus 6 first round picks for Mitchell, Bogi, Beverly and Gay. Puts them into full rebuild mode but they have guys to develop and heaps of picks.
Heat simply swap Robinson, Jovic and a first for Jonothan Issacs. Seems like a lot to give up but I think Issacs will prove he’s worth it. Perfect replacement for Tucker as he’s a great defender but offers a lot more and fits the timeline with Herro and Bam.
Lakers do terrific. Yes it’s not Kyrie Irving but it’s a bunch of role players and great fits. Beverly is perfect at the 1 for Bron, gives you defence and can shoot the three ball. Robinson obviously shoots the three ball and can defend the wing, or be used in another seperate trade. Terrance Ross perfect for impact off the bench. Lastly Bojan, can play SF/PF is a super efficient scorer and would be a the third option on this team.
Think it would be terrific for the Lakers, great for the Heat, great for the Magic and good for the Jazz
There isn’t much gain from Herro to Mitchell, it’s a matter of shots taken. Mitchell scores almost 26ppg on 30 attempts and Herro scores 20ppg on 23 attempts. Give Herro 7 more attempts and he’s scoring 26. Mitchell is a more efficient player overall if you review the metrics but Herro isn’t a slouch.
Now the leap from Herro to KD, not even a debate.
I mean if I had to take Ben Simmons back as well… do it.
KD and Simmons for Lowry, Bam, Herro, and picks? Maybe you have to add something else but money works. You could hide Ben on that team if he ever plays. Would he work with Jimmy idk, so I’m reality you may need to involve a 3rd team. You could 1:1 with DLo or John Collins if Atlanta is still interested.
Bam is going to be a Miami Heat player as long as he has legs. He is the Zo. He is the UD. He is the Wade of this franchise and this city. There is zero chance he gets moved for anything short of biblical, unless there is some reason they want to accommodate him in the future. At least for a long time, Bam isnt going anywhere
KD > Bam everyday even on his worst day
Still wouldnt be traded for him. The point would be to pair KD with Bam, and obviously Jimmy Butler
LOL
What part of not even a starter translates into a maximum contract?
150 starters in the league and how many of them are worth max contracts?
Robinson’s contract MAY limit his trade value? I for one am shocked at this news.
