New York’s impending pursuit of Jalen Brunson became obvious once a Knicks contingent led by Julius Randle, William Wesley and Allan Houston was spotted at Game 1 of the first-round series between the Mavericks and Jazz. However, as Marc Stein writes in his lastest article for Substack, it’s clear now that New York had designs on pursuing Donovan Mitchell as well as Brunson.
Recent reports from Tony Jones of The Athletic and Andy Larsen of The Salt Lake Tribune indicate that the Jazz are looking for six first-round picks and young players in exchange for Mitchell, but the Knicks balked at that asking price. According to Stein, even if the Knicks have more draft picks to offer at the moment, they should be “careful not to underestimate” the Heat and Nets as potential Mitchell suitors.
Under president Leon Rose, the Knicks have unsuccessfully pursued other star players, which is why it’s so important to the incumbent regime to land a player of Mitchell’s stature, Stein says.
Here’s more from Stein:
- Mitchell has multiple ties to the Knicks, Stein adds. Mitchell is “very close” with Knicks assistant Johnnie Bryant, who was an assistant with the Jazz for several seasons and recently had multiple interviews for Utah’s head coaching job. He’s also friends with Brunson due to their shared connection with Eric Paschall, who is Mitchell’s closest friend in the NBA and was college teammates with Brunson at Villanova, per Stein.
- Like the Knicks’ pursuit of Brunson, the Sixers are likely to face a tampering investigation due to the signing of P.J. Tucker, according to Stein, who reported four days before free agency opened that several rival teams were convinced that Tucker would land with Philadelphia. Stein and others had linked Tucker to the Sixers even before the draft, a week before free agency opened, and Stein notes that Tucker’s agent informed Shams Charania of The Athletic that he was heading to Philly a minute after free agency opened.
- It has been rumored that the Lakers might be interested in Jazz guard Patrick Beverley, but a source tells Stein that L.A. has no plans to deal Talen Horton-Tucker for the veteran. The Lakers have been prioritizing speed and youth in the offseason, so swapping a 21-year-old for a 34-year-old would detract from that, Stein notes. Horton-Tucker had been floated as a possibility because the Lakers don’t have any other mid-size contracts for salary-matching purposes — he’ll make $10.26MM in 2022/23, while Beverley will earn $13MM.
What about the 27 other players that went somewhere “a minute” after free agency opened ?
La has No plans because that offer would insult Utah in the first place ….they might be potential partners here soon on something much bigger
I think they’d take Rw+ unprotected 27 ‘first to get Conley Gay off the books and then Lakers get Bogs as the sweetener
The Lakers would need to add more if they want Bogey on top of that. The Raptors are interested in Bogey, so I doubt the Jazz just give him away to be nice. Lol
Lakers have interest in every player in the league and are also not willing to give up anything for any of those players, so the reports are kinda weird, why so consistent when Pelinka is scared?
How do you know they are interested? Reports are reports. Doesn’t mean they are facts. The only player the Lakers are knowingly trying to get is Kyrie. Give THT away for Beverly, u have no chance at Krie or even Heild/Turner in a miracle trade
@ BenBoy- I actually think Jazz would have to throw a 2nd back (bronny draft) for par value but since Ainge has the top ground he won’t have too here-
Conley’s booked for 24 mill 2024 or they can cut him for 14 mill dead – Which is worse/headscratcher?
Gay has a player option 2024 for 6.7 mill that the Jazz will want nothing of
Its a salary dump both ways in a way and one Utah would be happy to make considering they are shuffling in a HIGH HIGH value 1st as well in the process- They can get the 25th pick next year for Bogs anytime(now/ trade deadline)but this pick has far greater value and they could get it by end week
This is an interesting alternate landing spot for Russ, especially if LAL is truly dead set on not giving up two 1sts to get off Russ.
Even if LAL can’t get Bogs I still like it as a fallback option assuming Kyrie is untenable. You get two functional role players in Conley and Gay but also still have that other 1st and THT to make potentially one more upgrade.
Utah would want a little more sweetner than that. Gay wouldn’t be hard to trade.
The sweetener is the 27 unprotected pick for Utah, Id only assume Lakers would want one as well in Bogs to play ball-
That picks worth over 3 of the Knicks protected picks to date-
Conley and Gay are underwater if you combine them/split them up but most of all they leak into 2024 whereas Westbrook expires … Ainge actually wins that trade per usual but he should as he has all the leverage to do so…They’ll be other Bogs opportunities 110% but a pick like the Lakers 27 unprotected won’t ever be involved and it seems like Danny likes dem picks….I’ll let you add it all up
My bigger point was you don’t try and lowball THT for Pat Bev in the first place
Once again, Cap, you are on the money.
Knicks and Jazz are just haggling. It’s a foregone conclusion this deal gets done. We finally get the young superstar that has eluded us for years. Can’t wait to buy that Mitchell jersey. I’ll actually show up to the garden this year too. I’m very excited. Do not break my heart Knicks. I’m actually believing and having faith in you. I haven’t been this vulnerable in years, it’s scary lol.
Yes go ahead and give them those 6 first round picks and all those young players they requested. Danny Ainge is a bank robber in disguised . Be careful with this dude. He already robbed T-Wolves.
Decent post, but Mitchell is not a Superstar that eluded the Knicks for years. The Knicks chose to fire Phil Jackson after the 2017 Draft instead of before, so Phil ended up drafting the “Triangle-friendly” Frank Ntilikina at 8th over Donovan Mitchell who fell to 13th. Ntilikina was a debated draft pick the very second that Phil picked him.
That whole thing was more about Knicks being inept than it was about this particular Superstar eluding him.
If it goes down, it will certainly be the Knicks first REAL Superstar since Patrick Ewing.
Former Warriors Paschall is going to New York with Mitchell
What are the Nets offering? Ben Simmons, Cam Thomas, 2 Sixers 1sts, and what esle?
Pat Bev isn’t worth as much as KCP.
Stein is such an embarrassment. The NYK have better things to do than worry about underestimating other suitors for DM, particularly BKN and MIA. Very different trade asset bases and frankly it would be amazing if either of those teams could create a package that is even a little bit appealing to a rebuilding team.
Milwaukee, Miami. Boston, Toronto, Philly all still a level above Knicks even with Mitchell. Probably CHI & ATL too. Jersey might be better depending on what it does with Durant & Irving. But this would easily put them ahead of Charlotte and Orlando for a yearf or two.
If Mitchell isn’t that much of a difference maker, then why did the jazz make the playoffs every year and compete for the 1 seed many years?
They had gobert and they are a functional team
LOL
They were just as good with Hayward the year before he got there. Clearly they needed to replace Hayward’s scoring (when he signed with BOS) and DM did that for them. He has been their first offensive option, but not the centerpiece of everything they did. They had a critical mass of real good veteran players that, with their HC, built a good culture.
Look at their roster was full of dudes that can actually play and they had two very good defenders in the paint and perimeter.
“Under president Leon Rose, the Knicks have unsuccessfully pursued other star players, which is why it’s so important to the incumbent regime to land a player of Mitchell’s stature, Stein says.“
What does this even mean. This is more crying like the geniuses on this board. It’s been two yrs since Rose arrived. It’s two yrs of a total rebuild. What star is coming here and for what excatly.
This is why you can’t rebuild in NY. Cause right about now Dolan steps in and gives away RJ and whatever else they want to get Mitchell. Not even so called informed professionals. Who report on sports for a living. Understand what it takes to rebuild. Only care about jumping on a story to sell their name. Even if it’s factually incorrect.
It’s Been TWO Years ………..
Try Reality ……… for once.
Oklahoma City looked like they were set to become the NBA’s next dynasty.
With Russell Westbrook now traded, the most important chapter in the Oklahoma City Thunder’s history is officially closed. Westbrook was the last piece standing from the young, upstart team that took the NBA by storm in the early part of the decade. Along with Kevin Durant and James Harden, Westbrook and Oklahoma City looked like they were set to become the NBA’s next dynasty.
YET ………….
Thunder were favored to beat Heat in 2012 Finals, but lost 4-1. Then in 2016 Thunder were up 3-1 on (73 win) Warrior team. And lost in seven. KD left the next yr. And the rebuild began ……….
It’s Been SIX plus yrs. Thunder have more picks than Bron has hair follicles. And this NEVER ending rebuild has produced what excatly. Tanking for 4 yrs and accumulating #1 picks.
Yet the Knicks after TWO yrs are suppose to have Stars sign here. And we are suppose to be in the Finals ……..
How long has it taken Philly with Embiid NOW. The PROCESS is still in the works 5 yrs later. And it’s processing backwards NOW.
Yet Knicks are Suppose to Sign and miss on every star who is available. After TWO yrs.
This is why Dolan Messes up up every couple of yrs. Cause in the end he’s ANOTHER GENIUSE …….
Learn the game so you can make a real point.
Lol in these 2 tears the stars ignored you, that’s what he’s saying. It’s not that hard.
The thunder cooment below it’s totally unrelated. Oklahoma couldn’t be a free agent destination like NY could. Small teams don’t sign free agent stars.
Lol get informed. The day you make an intelligent criticism will be the first. You have to have a team worth coming to. For any Star to want to come.
Right OKC can take ten yrs to rebuild and that’s normal.
What part of Never rebuild thru draft. Do you not understand.
What part of 6 different FO and coaches thru that time do you not understand.
Most Franchises understand a rebuild should take 5 yrs. Before you see real results with a future.
The only future we have seen is a new FO. Therefore a new direction. A new coach therefore new players. And a Groundhog Day reverberating.
The whole Point of Rose and Thibs. Is to stop this insanity. I know 95% of you can’t understand that or care too. But unfortunately we live it…… Get Real Knowledge please
TWO YEARS …….
In the End. I read in the players not the media. Mitchell wants NY. So I believe it will happen. I just hope they don’t overpay.
I’d rather wait it out. And see what other players will be available later. Two yrs there is no need to rush this now ……REBUILD
As usual you write a sheet without actually saying anything.
You have completely failed to sing a star free agent. Compare with the Yankees and the other city teams and the difference it’s chaotic.
That’s not what he’s saying.
Learn to read.
It means Ainge told Stein to say something stupid and Stein did as he was told. Anybody paying attention knows Rose hasn’t pursued any star since taking over (beyond normal tire kicking), largely because they’re haven’t been any available stars that were appropriate for the team. I’m not even sure DM is, but at least he’s the right age.
The only FO guy who’s ever had so much trouble closing deals that someone would make that kind of statement about him (well, he better get this one done) – is Ainge himself.
Let’s say hypothetically Trader Danny agrees to this deal from Leon Rose:
Grimes
IQ
Obi
(3) 1sts NYK acquired on draft night
(2) future NYK 1sts (let’s say top 3 protected)
That’s (5) first round picks – but (3) of them came essentially in exchange for our #11 this year and Kemba. Then you have IQ (makes no sense on a roster w/ Brunson/DM), you have Obi (24 yr old “prospect” who has shot 30% from 3 for his career), and Grimes.
The deal essentially reduces to #11 this year, Kemba, (2) future 1sts, and Grimes. Unless one is unusually high on Grimes and unusually low on Mitchell…that seems like a reasonable deal for NY?
More importantly it leaves NYK with a core of:
Brunson
Mitchell
RJ
Randle
Robinson
Which you could convince me (a) implodes because there’s only one ball, (b) is a top 4 team based just on raw talent in the East.
But *most* importantly it leaves us with enough of our future picks and Barrett, which should be enough ammo to potentially structure a subsequent deal down the line.
TL;DR if OKC was making this trade and not NYK people would probably be speaking of it in a different register.
Maybe be a play in team
Nothing tampering with a 37 year old
SMH
These articles are written as though the Mitchell trade is a blind auction.
It is not.
Utah wants top dollar. That means they shop every offer they get to try to get a higher price.
The Knicks aren’t going to lose out by refusing to bid against themselves and there is absolutely no way Utah trades Mitchell without one last call to see if the Knicks will beat their best offer.
With these KD and Mitchell trade talks, I can see, if the Knicks failing to close the deal, that perhaps that the Nets, Jazz and Heat get together on a 3-way deal that sends Mitchell to Brooklyn, KD to Miami, and draft picks and young pieces to the Jazz.
Names along with KD and Mitchell would be Duncan Robinson (for sure) and Tyler Herro. Other than these, anyone else’s guess.
I never considered OKC. If they do all picks no players.
A core of SGA, Mitchell making mini max’s plus a gang of future max guys is fun as hell to think about.
