Appearing on The Rally (video link), Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that trade talks between the Jazz and Knicks centered on Donovan Mitchell have “stalled out” and the two teams haven’t had contact for about two weeks.
According to Charania, Utah is continuing to discuss moving Mitchell, just not with New York. The Jazz have engaged with the Hornets and Wizards recently, Charania adds, but it doesn’t sound like a potential deal is imminent with either of those clubs.
As Charania observes, many around the league still peg the Knicks as the favorites to land the three-time All-Star guard due to their combination of draft capital and young players. However, with the caveat that things can change at any time, it appears as though nothing is happening on that front right now.
Here are a few more trade rumors from around the NBA:
- On his Please Don’t Aggregate This podcast (hat tip to HoopsHype), Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report said he continues to hear that the Jazz don’t have much interest in trading for — and paying — Knicks wing RJ Barrett as part of a Mitchell package. Barrett is eligible for a rookie scale extension up until the start of the 2022/23 regular season, and if he’s unable to come to terms on an extension, he’d be a restricted free agent in 2023.
- Ian Begley of SNY.tv pushes back on the notion that the Jazz aren’t interested in Barrett, noting his report earlier this month that Utah actually initiated talks with New York with Barrett as part of the return package. Sources tell Begley the Jazz were trying to project what Barrett’s extension value might be at the time of those early discussions, which is only natural. It’s worth pointing out that these two reports aren’t mutually exclusive — the Jazz may indeed have interest in Barrett, but perhaps got a sense of what he’s looking for in an extension and then decided they didn’t want to pay him a large contract in the future. For what it’s worth, Begley says he would refuse to put Barrett in a possible Mitchell deal if he were the Knicks, as he believes that he’s worth more than extra first-round picks.
- On the latest Lowe Post podcast, ESPN’s Zach Lowe said he doesn’t believe the Heat ever seriously pursued Hawks big man John Collins, but wonders if they might revisit that possibility before the season starts. “There has been some Miami, John Collins chatter,” Lowe said, per RealGM. “It’s old. It might be months old. I don’t think it was ever really serious at all. They might revisit that.”
- Fred Katz of The Athletic suggests that the return the Jazz received from the Timberwolves for Rudy Gobert may have stalled the trade market for stars like Mitchell and Kevin Durant. According to Katz, the Jazz are seeking a bigger package for Mitchell than they received for Gobert, and the Nets are certainly looking for a massive haul for Durant. That might be having a trickle-down effect not only on the teams that are interested in the two stars, but other teams who could be looking to make lesser deals, Katz writes.
Utah got everything from a poorly run team for Gobert and thinks the rest of the league’s poorly run teams are dumb enough to do the same for Spida. Love Donny but he’s not worth the next 5 years of draft capital, especially for teams who are realistic about their chances at needing said draft capital.
But no one in 25 years is more poorly run than knicks consistently so makes no sense. In what world do you think the knicks are well managed?
I don’t know how you can read his comment and come to the conclusion that he thinks the Knicks are well managed. He literally implies that they’re poorly run.
YAWN …….. …… yawn …….
Let Mitchell go to the Nets! The Knicks are not trading 8#1 draft picks to the Jazz, and the delusional Trader Danny. Knicks should just move on at this point. All this because the Jazz ripped off the T-Woves by trading them 5 lst rounders for Rudy Gobert? Smh. Trade Julius Randle and Evan Fournier to the Lakers for Russell Westbrook and a 2027 lst rounder. Get it done Knicks!
The Jazz didn’t rip the T-Wolves off. It was a consolidation trade. The Wolves traded off all their leftovers to the Jazz. They didn’t need anymore mid to low level 1sts. They needed a piece to put them over the top and they felt Gobert was that piece.
Same with the Knicks. Do they really need a bunch of project late round draft picks that they need to develop that are too old to develop anyway like Quickley and Grimes? Not if they have Mitchell and Brunson as the starters. They’d still have Rose and whatever mid-level vet they sign to back them up. All the rumors I’ve heard are for 6 1sts. The Knicks have 8 tradable picks, the majority of which are protected and are likely to convey to 2nds. Trade the Jazz the six they want and save the last two to package up with Randle next off season to make a run at a 3rd star when they have a ton of cap space.
The picks aren’t the sweet spot for the Jazz anyway. It’s their own pick that if they tank they can turn into Wembanyama or Henderson.
I have this trade idea
Draymond Green and Santos for John Collins
Warriors need to ger younger.
Hawks can deal Capela for Nikola Vučević
Warriors won because of their solid and improved defense. Green has been on all those teams. And now you think they should trade him away for an undersized big who is weak defensively and shoots three’s like everyone else on that team? And then the Hawks trade the one solid big D guy they have for Swiss cheese down low that scores like the rest of the team?
The fact that the media continues to push the DM to NYK rumor is just sad. The fans do not want him. The team isn’t going to overpay. It’s over.
Both Danny Ainge and Leon Rose are delusional.
Both Danny Ainge and Leon Rose are the cheapest GMs in the NBA.
There is zero chance that Knicks will offer 3 young players and 6 first round picks for Mitchell.
Knicks can only offer a Knicks own First plus 3 Firsts from other teams.
They already asked the league and they can offer all those available picks as long as they’re every other year. The other teams’ picks don’t have that limitation.
That’s what I’ve been saying, that a lot of these picks can very likely convert to 2nd round picks. That’s a pretty crummy return if most of them do. All fans see is 1st round picks. They don’t know their actual value.
Huh? They can offer all theirs through 2029 and then all the others from other teams. Study up. Not saying they should but clearly you don’t understand what they can offer
To make it clear, the Knicks could trade their own unprotected first round picks in 2023/2025/2027/2029, unprotected pick swaps in 2024/2026/2028, Dallas’ first round pick this year (lottery protected, I believe), and Milwaukees pick in 2025 (unsure of the protections).
The rest of the “first round picks” in the Knicks arsenal from other teams are so heavily protected that they might as well be viewed as future 2nd round picks.
I hope Danny Ainge can get every available Knicks pick and pick swap as outlined above, plus the Dallas 2023 and Milwaukee 2025 pick, in addition to Quickley, Grimes, and Cam Reddish. I’d let the Knicks keep Obi Toppin, I wouldn’t want to pay Obi next year when he’s up for an extension. I’m not very high on him.
Fournier would be added for cost matching purposes, which also contributes to the bounty of picks going from New York to Utah as New York can get off that atrocious contract.
I just don’t get the narrative that the Wolves gave up an over the top amount of assets. They were able to add Gobert without giving up their best 4 players.
Beasley and Beverley helped fill the salary needs. Vanderbilt is a nice young player, but not loving the needle for anyone. Maybe Kessler becomes something, but no one predicts anything crazy. And the four picks should be late firsts.
Even if this doesn’t work out in terms of fit, in three years you trade Towns and/or Rudy anyway and build around Edwards.
I wonder this as well
Both LA teams gave up greater packages for AD and PG
Most likely a geographical rift here in the media seeping down to the common folk creating a inflated echo chamber
The PG13 trade was extremely unique because it brought Kawhi with it. Anthony Davis was a stud and helped the Lakers with a championship immediately. Goebbert is a declining center with little offensive game. Not even close.
OKC: Donovan Mitchell
Jazz: Derrick Favours, Josh Giddey, Ousmane Deing, Ty Jerome and 4 first round picks
OKC forms a star trio of SGA Spida and Chet
They have good young role players in Dort, Bazley, both Williams boys and Mann.
Behind them you have a bunch of other young players like Maledon, Wiggins, JRE and Poku.
Still have an absolute boss load of picks.
Should be starting to become more competitive and a fringe play in side.
Jazz get a bunch of young players and picks in return. They still need to heavily shop other vets such as Beverly, Clarkson, Gay, Bogan, and Conley. I’d keep Beasley for now.
Line up Giddey Beasley Deing Vanderbilt and Kessler and just tank out the season. Off the bench Jerome, NAW, Bolmaro and Azubuike.
It’s a better off than what the Knicks were thinking and for OKC it doesn’t gut the roster or the war chest of picks. It’s just another step in the rebuilding process
I would love it if OKC got involved. It’s just not as likely because the Jazz want to do right by Mitchell. However, if Mitchell okays it then they could do it.
Josh Giddey would be a nice return. Just don’t see the Jazz wanting Favors back, after trading him twice. Of course, that’s unless they want him as an expiring, locker room guy. He’s still a fan favorite, for sure!
That’s exactly it.
Giddey and Deing would be solid returns. Favours comes back on an expiring just for salary matching purposes but even so he’s a fan favourite, knows the team, knows the city and would be good for a young locker room.
Mitchell has to put up with most likely missing the playoffs in his first team with the team but by next season they should be a playoff side.
SGA is a perfect backcourt partner for him. They can share the touches, SGA can okay either guard spot, his extra height is handy as Mitchell is shorter for his position. Both have good 4th quarter, over time ability and would come up clutch to win games. Chet is a superstar in the making. Lu Dort on the wing gives you three point spacing and really good defence, he a guy you want on the team. It would be a very solid team and they would have tons of picks to get better with
Gobert ain’t a top center that’s for sure… having said that he still is a better player and more valuable than Mitchell… so, why would UTA expect a bigger return?
Puzzling, right?
Nope.
Yep
Frankly I find the KD trade disrespectful. Nets did everything he asked. Then when it FAILED miserably. He wants to bail.
Nets were lucky to move Harden. Another KD, GM disaster. Franchises who let stars run the Team. Deserve what they get.
I get Brooklyn asking for all they can get. But at 34 what is KD worth ????
He’s only worth big to a contender. Who with him will become a favorite to win it all. Then hopefully challenge for next 3-4 yrs. Which means the market is small imo. Nets blew it by not going after a Suns package. That would have been rebuilding on the Fly …
KD probably has to be first star to be traded. Makes no sense starting the season with him in Bklyn. Ainge is probably waiting and watching. If Nets get a haul. Then Jazz will ask for everything for Mitchell. I like DM a lot. He’s a committed baller. And his age fits our time line. I just don’t see him and Randle as a fit. (unless Randle is part of trade). I’d rather wait till Jan 15. When more players are available.
WESTBROOK IS THE PERFECT FIT IN A MIAMI HEAT JERSEY

If this offer was true. Then Jazz are biggest fools ever. 5 yrs ago Dolan would have pulled the trigger. And our rebuild would have been over. Mello all over again. Please bring some sanity to Knicks ….. Leon Rose
Why would the Knicks consider trading RJ Barrett? RJ Barrett is going to be great.
Im shocked the Knicks haven’t traded for Zion yet.
That’s the only trade the Knicks are interested in.
The Knicks are the worst run team in all of sports ⚾️⚽️
