JaMychal Green officially became a free agent on Friday when he cleared waivers. That opens up a path for Green to sign with the Warriors. He’ll provide necessary depth at forward, since Golden State lost Otto Porter Jr. to Toronto and Nemanja Bjelica decided to play in Europe. Green is a proven 3-point threat and can guard multiple positions, Anthony Slater of The Athletic writes.
We have more on the Warriors:
- In the same story, Slater indicates Golden State will likely guarantee only 14 roster spots heading into training camp. Green would fill the 12th spot and rookie Ryan Rollins is expected to sign a multi-year contract. Andre Iguodala could fill the 14th spot if he doesn’t retire.
- The Nets are not “super high” on Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole as centerpieces of a deal for Kevin Durant, Zach Lowe of ESPN said on his podcast (hat tip to Ali Thanawalla of Yahoo Sports). That’s one reason why a deal with Golden State didn’t gain traction, even though it had some picks to dangle. “I don’t know if there ever really was a deal there that the Nets would have done. Obviously, you have to explore it if you’re the Warriors,” Lowe said. It’s also worth noting that Brooklyn wouldn’t be able to acquire Wiggins this season as long as Ben Simmons is still on the team.
- Owner Joe Lacob made his case with fellow team owners at the recent Board of Governors meeting in Las Vegas that tax penalties should be reduced when teams re-sign players they drafted, Marc Stein reports in his latest Substack article. Three of Golden State’s four highest-paid players — Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green — were draft picks that have only played for one team.
What the hell??? Imagine not being super high on JORDAN POOLE??? ahhaha Nets doomed forever due to idiots at the top, wouldnt know how to build a contender if they got handed one on a silver platter…
Wiggins-old man KD alone is a fair deal, albeit one that needs other teams involved to get done.
Poole has slightly more value than Colin Sexton. He’s a great story, he worked hard and came from the G-League and all but in the end his role should be what it.was during the playoffs 6th man.
Projected Roster as of this info:
Steph Curry
Draymond Green
Klay Thompson
Kevon Looney
Andrew Wiggins
Jordan Poole
James Wiseman
Jonathan Kuminga
JaMychal Green
Donte DiVincenzo
Moses Moody
James Baldwin Jr.
Ryan Rollins
14th (Andre Iguodala?)
15th – not used to start season
Quinndary Weatherspoon (2way)
Lester Quinones (2way)
Another guard-heavy roster, but a nasty one nonetheless. This clears the Clippers easily, and pretty much any East team too. Would like another C because of Wiseman’s health question marks, but that’s not what GSW’s people up top like to see, and being they won a title doing this, I won’t question it further haha
Why the warriors might leave the 15th spot open in case of injury to a big man.
Right, but also they could just get that big man now via trade/sign. Ultimately no biggie, but hoping a ring-chasing buyout guy takes that spot.
You are forgetting the McClung and Williams signings.
Didn’t forget. Unguaranteed contracts and not actually rostered yet
Jordan Poole is a good player for sure ! But he’s not some sure future all star ! He might end up more of a multi time 6th man of the year like lou Williams and again that’s good
the reason the warriors did not sign Poole to a extension is because he needs to prove it a second year. He needs to work on defense to be a better player. Right now I look at him as another Jamal Crawford. Somebody who can give you 20 points a night off the bench. like you said a 6th man.
Well this will be the first year he’s eligible for the extension I believe ! But I’ll use cj McCollum as a example he’s a career 22 ppg scorer who’s never been a series all star game candidate! I’m not sure any of say Jordan Poole , Tyler herro or ty maxey will ever be as good as ci and I’m sure the nets don’t necessarily see them as players to build around
Problem is KD is getting old and has a history of injuries so the Warriors don’t need to mortgage their future for a player that only might help them win now. KD left so why would they want him back? Its only sport writers making up click bait stories that GSW want KD.
He left on bad terms. Bad for team chemistry.
Jamal had a handle and could get his own shot. He was also an ast guy if you needed it. Poole hasn’t done anything.
He’s a system guy. Who plays off the attention other players get. He’s in a good place to grow. But you put him on another team. And he gets exposed. Relax and let him grow.
Jamal was perhaps the most overrated player whose career lasted as long as it did in NBA history.
Career 41%/34.8% shooter and only topped 20 ppg once.
Poole has won a share of a title as a 5th-6th man. He started 51 games, shot 44.8%/36.4% and led the league in ft% at 92.5%.
It is pretty clear that Lacob wants to hold on to his newer draft picks along with the older guys. I don’t know how much overlap there will be but the tax could be expensive when rookie extensions come due. Definitely help GSW the most although every team would probably benefit. I don’t know if the players association would like it because it would make player movement less likely…maybe Silver wouldn’t like it because player movement or threats thereof generates a lot of press attention. NBA summer podcasting would take a hit.
If instituted for 2023-24 make it only applicable to draftees starting in 2023 so it gradually phases in.
More teams likely to fully pay a guy and more willing to go past the tax instead of using it as a semi hard cap. NBAPA probably wants all those things.
Warriors don’t need KD back and shouldn’t be penalized for extending players they draft and develop. Obviously.
It’s a long offseason. Poole and Wiggins could still receive extension this offseason, or they will simply play out their contracts. W’s are not at risk of losing Poole. Let’s just see how genius Myers navigate the luxury tax dilemma. One of Wiggins, Poole, Klay needs to go in 2 yrs but who knows. It’s a no brainer that both Klay and Draymond needs to take paycut in the next extensions – to something like $20m per yr.
Add Wiggins to taking a pay cut. Let him be a free agent and see what he gets offered. If a team offers him more than $30 million a year let him walk. Poole need to back up last season with a big season and play better defense. Most likely I see Poole resigning and Wiggins signing somewhere else.
BKN, even if their asking price comes down (which it will have to if they want to get a deal any time soon), is obviously not going to be interested in Wiggins and Poole as centerpieces. They’re complementary players, not stars. Regardless, KD has no interest in going back to GSW, and there won’t be a deal without him being OK with his destination.
I can’t imagine choosing Ben Simmons over Andrew Wiggins and Jordon Poole taking into consideration how those 3 guys performed in their last playoff appearances.
I will take Ben any day of the week and twice on Sundays before Wiggs and Poole!!!
That’s why you are El Don Always Wrong.
KD is The Old & the Restless. Why trade for a soap opera? They just won a chip for godsakes.
I think Lacob is spot on regarding tax liabilities with resigning drafted players. Think how much better the league and game would be if teams could keep the players they drafted. It’s a rarity for a guy to stay with a team for all or most of their career and it shouldn’t be.
I still think in the end Wiggins is traded. Kuminga and Wiseman are too good to not get meaningful mins. Then there is Moody and Poole still growing as players. Wiggins can bring back assets for more rings now. Or you can even roll the dice with him. Unfortunately you are talking huge cap hits. So at some point money has to be part of this equation. Imo they are better off selling high on Poole and Moddy now.
