There’s been speculation that the Warriors might consider moving some of their young talent to acquire another star, but Jonathan Kuminga hopes to play alongside fellow lottery pick James Wiseman for many years to come, writes Jarod Castillo of NBC Sports Bay Area. Kuminga discussed the possibility in a TV interview during Friday’s Summer League game (video link).
“Hopefully we play like that together for like the next 10 years, 15 years,” Kuminga said. “Just building our chemistry at a young age, it means a lot.”
Summer League is the only time that Kuminga, 19, and Wiseman, 21, have played together because Wiseman missed all of last season following knee surgery. They have been effective, combining for 30 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in Friday’s game, and they’ll likely both have larger roles next season because Golden State has lost five players in free agency.
There’s more on the Warriors:
- A Western Conference executive tells Sean Deveney of Heavy.com that Andrew Wiggins might become too expensive for Golden State to keep in the long run. The unidentified executive expects the Warriors to engage in extension talks with Wiggins and then eventually explore their trade options after he has a new deal in place.
- Assistant coach Jama Mahlalela, who was promoted to replace Mike Brown on the front of the Warriors’ bench, had a huge impact in his first year with the club, notes Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News. Mahlalela came to Golden State from Toronto and was given credit for helping Wiggins and Gary Payton II become important parts of the title-winning team. “He’s very forward-thinking,” owner Joe Lacob said. “He’s not reactive, he’s proactive about things. I don’t want to say we’ve never had somebody like that, but he’s a different breed from any coach we’ve had.”
- Kevon Looney‘s new contract will become fully guaranteed for the 2024/25 season if the Warriors capture another championship in 2023 or 2024, tweets Ian Begley of SNY.tv. After a strong playoff run, Looney signed a three-year deal to stay with Golden State, but the final season only carries a $3MM guarantee on his $8MM salary.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The Warriors have been golden so far in orchestrating different roster acquisitions, needs, and massaging the cap.
It makes sense for Jonathan kuminga and Moses Moody to pick up more minutes in a larger role because of their lower salaries and high expectations. Also fingers are crossed that James Wiseman stays healthy and can begin his journey as an NBA player.
Not sure if anyone else noticed this but you can see the quality of the Warriors organization in that when they realize they can’t keep Wiggins at a high salary along with everyone else, they make sure and take care of their own by suggesting they would sign Wiggins to a new deal, thus ensuring his financial well-being, before trading him away. Could just be Optics because he’ll probably get paid elsewhere, but I like the message they send.
Top-notch quality organization.
Problem is for Warriors either Poole or Wiggins is gone because of money. Wiggins would need to sign a team friendly contract to stay. They should trade Poole for some draft picks and some young players. I actually like Moody far more than Poole. Moody could give you 20 points a night and play good defense.
Poole has to stay because he is a ball-handler. Best backup point guard they could hope to find because if they need him to be a scorer he can do that also.
In 23-24 the two contracts at point guard will probably be near 75 million if they keep Poole. Don’t know if even Joe Lacob will pay that. This year is a freebie though.
The big cash crunch should only be in year one of those deals since Klay and Dray will expire the next year, and I think at that point they wont make as much on the next deal into their late 30s so… Also the next year after that the new TV deal will cause another large bump to the cap!
That is not how I read it. I read it as they are going to sign him so his salary is high enough to make matching salaries for another star player. KD would be an example but not an expectation.
Brewpacking, I understand what you’re saying and don’t disagree but what stars are available anymore? Seems like guys are digging in Roots at home and not moving on. There’s Durant of course but not sure what other stars there are…, but yeah I like your point.
The only reason they’re going to pay Wiggins is so they can match whatever salary he’ll have as a trade option. The higher that price is, the less options they’ll have to trade him as other GMs know he’s a great fit on a stacked team like the Warriors but he’s been pretty much a bum elsewhere. I hope he demands a high salary, GS gives it thinking they can move it and then no one wants him for that price.
Agree at the heart but they are working these deals to benefit themselves first and foremost
I suppose the decision is based a lot around Kuminga’s growth next year
Without many means to free agency I could see Wiggins staying a little longer via Birds. Something I, along with you, wouldn’t have thought 12~16 months ago.
He’s the player everybody wants but nobody wants to pay…eventually outta 30 teams he’ll find his bag tho. Warriors putting in some early work to try and lower the number, something good franchises (like GSW) are constantly doing (working)
The environment that the Warriors create and instill as a whole is evident in the way Jonathan Kuminga speaks in this interview. Clearly continuity and consistency is huge when it comes to successful teams.
It’s amazing that other teams rip through coaches and general managers so quickly, and players are shuffled in and out en masse so frequently. And then they wonder why they are crappy every year.
Its a good sign when a player see the long career instead of I want more minutes and play for stats. Warriors have young players who can start for most team but instead they get to learn from HOF to have a long and successful career.
I wonder who that could be ????
Oh !! maybe it’s the team that’s suppose to upgrade every yr and sign everyone available.
Would you trade Klay, Wiggins, and Wiseman for KD and Kyrie if it meant you kept Kuminga?
Kyrie would only be there for year, and then they’d pay Poole.
Might make more sense from a cap and transition standpoint.
Klay will not be traded because of fan backlash and him and Curry feed off each other. Kyrie would not fit on the warriors.
Lebron will play for the Warriors before Kyrie does (might happen after Steph/Dray/Klay pass him in rings).
I want no part of Kyrie Irving even though he’s probably one of the best closers ever. The guy has so much baggage that I wouldn’t come near him.
The message of this thread as I see it is continuity and growing together and consistency as a team.
So that means picking the right guys and developing them and holding on to them.
Warriors have to trade Draymond. Klay and Wiggins, otherwise Warriors won’t be good for 15 consecutive years
2022-2036
Good trade only
Not sure what you mean here but are you saying you need to trade your stars as they get older for younger guys? Well I don’t agree with that because you have to honor the guys that brought you success over time. You can’t just send guys out to pasture disrespectfully like that.
It’s different if they leave as a free agent to go home when they get older, stuff like that, but you don’t trade Draymond Green right now.
Besides, Draymond’s game will not get old. It’s his defense and Leadership and ball movement and quarterbacking. Those are all mental, intelligence, and unselfishness. That won’t go away. He may slow down but he’ll still be good in his mid 30’s like PJ Tucker is.
I think he’s hitting the booth after 2 more years max
Draymond is what Donn Nelson tried to do with Chris Webber. It failed then. But, Draymond is smarter. Looney has said that Draymond made him a better player.
Oh my goodness, speaking of Chris Webber, if only the Warriors had that same draft scenario one year earlier or later I forget which. Then they could have drafted Alonzo Morning who would have been their Center for 10 years. They would have been set with that Run TMC lineup and Marcialonis Off the Bench. Chris Webber screwed them and I lived to suffer the entire 90s for it. I’m sure you too as well.
I love Draymond as a player and a person, but he can’t come close to 37 year old PJ Tucker as a shooter. Plus, the salary gap between the two is enormous.
Question: would you rather have 20 years of Wiggins or 4 years of Durant?
Wow if it was me definitely 4 years of Durant. Wiggins is an enigma in the fullest sense of the word. You really don’t know what you’re going to get.
You know what you’re getting with Wiggins. He’s been very steady for the Warriors. He’s going to take on the toughest perimeter assignment on D, keep the ball moving and knock down threes or attack the basket when needed.
Wiggins stepped up and was the 2nd best player on the team in the playoffs and even shouldered the load in game 5 when Curry was having an off night.
Yes Tacocat, definitely this year he settled into who he is. But with that tantalizing athleticism and the occasional every 10 games Jordan like dunk in someone’s face you expect so much more from the man. That’s I guess where I’m going with what I said.
But I do give the man proper respect for becoming the player he has. So much work and adversity and people like me complaining about his game. Definitely due respect to Andrew wiggins.
All Wiggins needs an all time team to make him relevant. Other GMs know this. Anyone who trades to get him is going to be just as disappointed as the Wolves were.
Sorry meant 10 not 20
20 did sound funny but I rolled with it anyway LOL
4 of Durant. Wiggins isn’t ever going reach his full potential on this team, his IQ isn’t high enough to figure out the Dray/Klay/Steph intuition and he always gets exposed trying to fit in, usually resulting in him basically doing nothing for full quarters at a time. KD’s IQ clears Wiggins’s handily, he understands that trios games about 100x better.
I can see Wiggins being a star when he’s the primary option, but he will never be that on this team. KD will be a star on this team, and any team. 4 years of KD with only giving up Wiggins and Moody and picks will mean 4 rings.
He’s the 2nd best player on the team now, I love Klay but the injuries cost him and Dray’s lost a step or 6.
Considering the fact that Durant doesn’t want to play for the Warriors, it is easy to Wiggins all the way.
Oddly I think now he does. It sounds like the Ws are one of the only teams that could deal for him and stay competitive so the Ws are his best shot at a landing spot where he can get rings.
Oddly. Why would the Warriors want to trade for Kevin Durant. I don’t understand your fascination with Kevin Durant in a Warriors uniform. The Warriors don’t need him.
Also outside of the box. You keep your team intact, the. Next year trade Wig and Moody and a host of 1st rounders for whoever has the first pick in the draft?
Why? That doesn’t make any sense.
Because the top prospect next year is the next Lebron James
Your are doing a substantial number of drugs. Who is the next top project in the NBA draft? And why would any team want trade away that pick.
Nobody is going to be willing to trade the right to draft Victor Wembanyama for Wiggins and Moody and some future 1st rounders or any other package the Warriors could put together.
Very easy to picture a Poole, Moody, Kuminga, Wiseman Warriors core for the next decade. The biggest determining factor is how long Steph, Klay, and Dray wish to play in the NBA. I can see their big 3 retire at the same time in order to let the young guys take over but not very many players can turn down the money and walk away.
Regardless, the Warriors are the best run team, top to bottom, in the league and I don’t anticipate that changing
The big 3 have stated over and over they are going to play as long as possible. Steph could easily play til he’s 45, he’s literally working with Tom Brady’s people to extend his career. Dray’s IQ will allow him a much longer career than his body will let him have without it, I can see him playing past 35. Klay also, he missed 2 full seasons, he probably has more NBA miles left due to that alone, shooters don’t quit, Kyle Korver played til 38, Klay could too.
That’s 5+ years of the big 3 left. No shot they retire at the same time, Curry is trying to leave the game the undisputed GOAT, and will play as long as it takes.
Curry will never be the GOAT. Not unless he leads a new team not loaded with studs to 3 or 4 rings. He can win the next three rings with GS and they’ll still be team rings.
Jdrew I disagree. Have you seen the Warriors without curry? He absolutely carries that team. Yes there’s other studs on the Warriors but Curry makes them better. Klay Thompson wouldn’t be half the guy on another team. He fits Curry perfect and vice versa. He brings defense and size and unconscious shooting and sometimes making lol.
But in the finals clearly Curry willed that team to the championship. They would be down 8 or 12 and he would take over. He truly is an amazing player. If you think of Michael Jordan who many consider the goat, he did nothing his first 10 years. Then when they brought in other studs he finally got some rings. Pippin Dennis Rodman Ron Harper are all very good players. Sort of like Wiggins Klay Thompson Andre Iguodala Draymond Green.
@A’s
I disagree. Curry has his rings and every award he could get. He’s already 1st all time in 3pters and is undoubtedly the best shooter to ever touch a basketball. Dray has a media career carved out already and to be honest seems almost one foot out the door as it is. Klay having two years off I’m sure he found things to enjoy away from the game (being forced out due to injury is different than the peace of retirement, I understand that).
When I think of players retiring I always think back to Dirk questioning whether or not his last year was worth it and saying if he had just retired he would be able to run around with his kids. Warriors core has nothing left to prove.
I don’t get why people are so obsessed with the Warriors trading for KD and Irving. Why tear apart what is working. KD refuses to play for the Warriors. I have no idea Irving wants to do. It would destroy the team to bring in players that really have no interest in playing. It ain’t broken. So, why are guys trying to fix it?
You’re exactly right, I don’t see Durant coming.. I think it’s just the Warriors taking the high road in the saying yeah he could fit here Etc.. but it’s not going to happen.
The core plus the young guys is working out just fine.
High Road? What drugs are you on? The Warriors have not said the KD is a fit. I don’t get where you think that the Warriors are interested in KD.
It’s been reported in several places that the Warriors players like Steph Etc would be okay with Kevin Durant coming over. It’s called taking the high road and has nothing to do with drugs.
It’s being agreeable to the narrative but not pushing for it. It’s avoiding controversy and questions about their strained relationship. Taking the high road. I’m agreeing with you and yet you still bash? I’m trying to take the high road with you here. Trying to avoid confrontation and rolling with it.
Where did Steph Curry say that he was excited about the idea of the Warriors trading most of their rotation, and future, for someone older than him? He didn’t say that. Why are you repeating something that you want to hear.
I’m just going by the rumors put out by NBA beat writers.

But again, I’m with you in the opinion that he’s not coming to the bay. Not happening. Warriors wouldn’t want to give up so much of the youth for 34-year-old Kevin durant.
Wiggins should go back to Raptors. It’s fitting he enjoy success there. I’m sure Warriors won’t have a problem trading Wiggins now. He can set them up for next group …….
I just remember all the geniuses hating on Wiggins from day Warriors got him. A 25 yr old player that’s suppose to be finished.
Oh my gawd. When did Andrew Wiggins play for the Toronto Raptors.Wiggins has not played for Warriors for 5 years.
OMG …. he just won with Warriors
Born in Toronto……
When did Wiggins say he wants to play for the Raptors?
When will you grow up.
I keep tellin yall, a huge multi-teamer where GSW gives up Wiggins, Moody and tons of draft picks, the Nets flip over everyone and get a pretty much new team, but not even necessarily getting Wiggins – the other teams would make the deal make sense for GSW so for them its Wiggins, Moody, draft picks for KD. That way Wiseman, Kuminga, Baldwin, Poole and Rollins are the youth movement to complement the iconic trio.
Wiggins, while not a bad player, does not clear KD in any way, shape or form, and GSW are a shoo-in to win more titles by subtracting Wiggins and Moody and adding KD. Any argument against this deal is just plain wrong. Not only can Steph clear Bron in titles, but KD, Klay and Dray would too – huge for KD’s legacy.
Can someone tell @asfanintheuk that Kevin Durant doesn’t want to play for the Warriors. The guy doesn’t want to listen to reality. Kevin Durant has said he doesn’t want to play for the Warriors. Why is so hard to penetrate your skulls with reality. What is wrong with you guys. @asfan is probably a 13 year old in Alabama.
Oh my gawd. @ASFANINTHEUK thinks that Kyle Korver is better than Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Steph Curry combined.
Having young players like Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody, Poole. Gives the Warriors the option of trading Wiggins. All 4 need real PT. It will be interesting to see who they move him to. Kuminga and Moody both play same position as Wiggins. So there is a log jam there. If you can say that in this offense. To me I see them as same piece in this offense. Wiggins has been a great addition. He’s learned to win and play to win. He’ll be 28 in Feb next yr. So he’s in his prime yrs. These next 5 yrs can be the best he can be. So this will be a really interesting move for Warriors. People get nuts over DM. I wouldn’t mind Knicks looking at Wiggins.
I could see the Warriors moving Wiggins for a 1st and a big…Moody is going to push the issue more than Kuminga
I hate to tell you this but Moody is a two guard and Kominga is a power forward.
I do believe in the tax penalty for teams that spend a lot to bring in players for 1 or 2 seasons. BUT I also believe not necessarily rewarding teams but give a break on the players that the teams drafted. And that should be any player that stays with the same team that drafted them going on their 6th season should be given a different formula. Even if the team has more then one player.
Okay I admit I am a Warriors fan and have been since 1985 – 86 season and have lived through horrible seasons one after the other but they did get LUCKY drafting Curry, Thompson and Green. Who knew back then what these three would turn out to be.
But it’s totally different then going out and BUYING 3 already NBA stars and future H of Famers.
Yes the Warriors need to pay a tax penalty but should get some kind of break for drafting good players.
And I know there are a lot of Warrior haters out there but the team should not be penalized for drafting well.
Why do they need to pay a penalty for drafting future hall of farmers.
I trust everything this organization does, and I’m the most pessimistic fan in the history of ever. They’ve shut me up forever. Now, if Lacob could please buy the Oakland A’s….
