The Cavaliers have had discussions with the Mavericks about a potential sign-and-trade involving restricted free agent Collin Sexton, Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com said on The Wine & Gold Talk Podcast (hat tip to HoopsHype).
Sexton is still unsigned with training camps set to start next month. Fedor notes that Cleveland wouldn’t be interested in any of Dallas’ moveable pieces, and the Mavs would have to shed salary to accommodate a sign-and-trade deal that would hard-cap them, so it remains unlikely that Sexton ends up in Dallas.
Things can change quickly in the NBA, of course, and Dallas could use another ball-handling guard. The team lost Jalen Brunson to New York in free agency this summer, so Spencer Dinwiddie is an early projected starter. Sexton averaged 16.0 points in 11 games before tearing his meniscus this past season.
Here are some other notes from the Central Division:
- ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Tim MacMahon and Tim Bontemps discussed the Cavaliers‘ outlook (video link), which includes Darius Garland, Evan Mobley‘s progression, and where the team may finish this season. Cleveland deployed a big lineup featuring Lauri Markkanen, Mobley and Jarrett Allen in the frontcourt last season, causing issues with its length. The team also received good production from Ricky Rubio, Cedi Osman and Kevin Love off the bench, but the season took a turn for the worse when key players dealt with injuries.
- Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo missed an international exhibition game for Greece on Friday, as relayed by Eric Nehm of The Athletic (Twitter link). Antetokounmpo is dealing with back soreness, though Nehm notes that his absence on Friday appeared precautionary. Giannis’ MRI came back clean, according to Eurohoops (via Twitter).
- Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic examines 10 games that will define the Bulls‘ season. The first game on Mayberry’s list is October 19’s season-opener against the Heat, which will be played in Miami. The team lost all four of its games to the Heat last season. Miami finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference last season (53-29), while Chicago was 46-36.
I would love to trade Tim Hardaway Jr and a pick or two for Colin Sexton. Hope we can work that out although I seriously doubt it.
There wouldn’t need to be any picks involved. At least not from Dallas.
why not?
Don’t worry, it’s not happening. Dallas isn’t going to hard cap itself and give away picks for a player who doesn’t move the needle. If they did this, it would pretty much ensure that no other substantive moves could be made before Luka’s max deal was up.
@Taco
Either you’re joking or you’re a joke. Despite the Sexton haters, the Mavs like him. Sexton, aside from the 11 or so games he played in before his injury, is a much, much better shooter/scorer than Timmy II. Tim shot a horrible 39%/33%/75% last year and his career FG% is only 42%. He’s shot worse than 39% on a couple of occasions so it’s not like it’s an outlier. He’s 29, which is not old by any means but he’s closer to being on the decline than Sexton who’s improved in most cases, year to year. In 2021 he shot 46%/37%/82% and had a career high 4.4 assists and scored a career high 24 ppg. Both his career points and assists are numbers Tim has never come close to. Also, while I’m sure the Mavs would want to extend him, he’s going to be relatively cheaper than the 3/$54 mil owed to TH II. If you want a young, efficient scorer on the cheap for your inefficient and expensive volume scorer then yeah, there’s got to be at least one first round non- lottery protected pick coming back to the Cavs, unless of course Sexton pulls a KP Jr and tosses soup or hot coco (or whatever it was) towards the thinned skinned Koby Altman. Defensive issues and being a small guard or not Sexton> TH II.
Why do people keep calling Sexton a point guard just because hes short?
Agreed, he’s not a PG. He’s an undersized combo guard at best that is a liability on defense.
Why would Cleveland want Tim Hardaway Jr.??? The NBA has let Collin Sexton know what his value is. Imagine being a client of Klutch Sports and the L.A. Lakers don’t want you. The Lakers could easily get a Sexton deal done. Not even under consideration!
Cavs would want THJ because they need a true small forward off the bench. Lauri is more of a power forward. Caris would start next to Isaac Evan Jarrett and Darius. If we attached a pick they can get a really good shooting wing off the bench and a first round pick for a player they don’t even really want. It’s a win win.
How would the lakers get sexton? Just out of curiosity? They have no one the cavs would be interested in
You pretty much sum up Sexton’s value here. You want to trade him to Dallas, and attach picks to him, so you can acquire a backup small forward. Sexton should take the 3 years and $39 million and be glad to get it. You said it yourself. His worth is being traded for a backup small forward.
exactly. thj is a small forward that can either start or come off the bench. all he can do is shoot off catch and sometimes dunk. that’s what the cavs need in a 6/7 man. if the cavs realize they’re not gonna get someone like tyler herro or whoever they want for him then i think something like this could happen:
Cavs get:
Tim Hardaway Jr
Davis Bertans
2023 Knicks 1st (Top 10 Protected)
Mavs get:
Collin Sexton
Mavs get a great shot creator to take some weight off Luka with a lineup of
PG – Luka Doncić
SG – Collin Sexton
SF – Dorian Finney Smith
PF – Christian Wood
C – JaVale McGee
6 – Spencer Dinwiddie
Cavs get more forward depth off the bench and some buckets with a lineup of:
PG – Darius Garland
SG – Isaac Okoro
SF – Caris LeVert/Lauri Maurkannen
PF – Evan Mobley
C – Jarrett Allen
6 – Tim Hardaway Jr/Caris LeVert/Lauri Maurkannen
win win
i really hope it happens
We don’t have a 2023 1st to trade
we have a knicks 1st and since it’s not our own we can trade it
We don’t have a knicks 1st. I am assuming you are confusing the fact that NY has our 2023 1st (Top 10 projected) via the Porzingis trade. We own ZERO future 1sts that aren’t our own.
oh you’re right my bad
They basically gave Lonnie Walker IV 6.5 and Sexton might play the season at the 7.2 QO.
That’s insane, everything about everything Walker has done since he entered the League is sub par to Sexton in every way and every role. Why pay a agent at all if your going to sign a QO, you could have let your cousin the makes the Door Dash runs for you negotiate a QO.
Agent can’t do anything if the money has dried up. Sexton will have a ton of suitors next year. Y’all really sleeping on Sexton. He was putting up very good offensive numbers before. Team around him sucked, defenses zeroed in on him, and he STILL managed to score efficiently. There’s plenty of teams that need that. But this offseason was a weird one, and he was restricted so teams were reluctant to tie up money when they figured the Cavs would just match.
I know players have international goals or visions of glory or think it’s fun to play with their brothers but it pains me to see Giannis with back issues in August while playing in some meaningless basketball tournament. It bodes ill for the season.
I’m guessing there are insurance protections in all these players contracts who participate in international tournaments, Olympics and so forth..but I get your point. Even with the financial part covered, it’s not like MKE can just sign a random dude to fill the stat sheet (or any team with their top star/stars..).
If Cavs want to trade young player, chat with Warriors
Mavs have nothing to offer for Cavs playoffs win in near future
Cavs have to prove they are not gonna flop like the Hawks did last year after making the playoffs. Cavs have done nothing to improve the roster. Caris Levert always has hype and never seems to produce a damn thing anytime wins matter. I am not convinced Cleveland is anything better than a Play-In team this year. Not convinced in the least that this is a team ready to make another big move forward.
Thats ok man, two of their stars are under 22 years old have some patience.
Sexton for crowder and shamet
Sexton, Osman, Winlder for Mike Conley
Sexton and Windler for Beasley and Vando
Sexton for THJr and Josh Green
None of these actually help either team.
sexton helps the mavs a lot, why do you say he wouldn’t?
Very unlikely. CLE’s position with Sexton is in part based on not wanting to go into tax territory. So, certainly, they won’t be dealing Sexton in a S&T where they take back a big contract. DAL can’t acquire Sexton in a S&T without without shedding a big contract.
josh green?
What about him? For CS to move to DAL in a S&T, there needs to be:
1) Matching $$ contracts (within 25% of CS’s new contract) going out from DAL.
2) DAL also has to be under the apron (hard cap) after the trade.
3) CLE can’t take back more than the BYC rules say, and, in any event, won’t take back so much that, after the trade, they’d be in the luxury tax.
Quite a trick. That’s all before you get to the basketball value of the trade pieces.
yes but you said specifically dallas can’t acquire him in a S&T without shedding a big contract. that’s not true because of josh green. if they give sexton a salary similar to his, it works
Green makes 3 mm a year. Sexton is upset with the 14 mm offer CLE made. He’s looking for 20 mm – 25 mm. DAL is above the apron now, so they’d still have to remove at least $$.
It’s not going to happen. Bertans contract is a top 5 worse contracts in the league (as in the amount of money he is owed) and thj doesn’t play defense. Cleavland and get so much more than thj and a future 1st that will be in the mid 20s. Problem is, rest of league is over the cap except like the Pistons but they already have their guards in place.
Next FA is a pretty weak one. It would behoove Sexton to just sign the QO, play how he has his entire career up to last season when he got hurt, and secure his bag.
Sexton averaged 16 points per game in the 11 games he played last year. Cavs became dramatically improved and made the playoffs without him. If he signs the Qualifying Offer, he may find himself making less than that as a free agent. Caris LeVert is gonna take offense from Sexton who isn’t needed in Cleveland anymore. His numbers will go down and he will see even less interest than now. Take the 3 years and $39 million and consider yourself lucky.
All Sexton has to do is be efficient with the opportunities he gets. That has been his M.O since he’s been in the league. He’s very efficient and if he can come off the bench, show that he can score 16PPG efficiently and help lead this team to the playoffs, he’s going to get paid much more than the $13 mill Cavs are offering him.
Cavs taking the leap they did last year, wasn’t because of Sextons absence, it was in spite of it. Team got Lauri, Mobley, and huge development from Darius and JA. But they greatly missed Sexton when all the injuries built up. I don’t see Levert as a positive to this team. His lack of shooting I feel will be detrimental.
I can definitely agree on Sexton being best suited as offense off the bench. Not sure how many have the cap space without a trade to value him above the $13 million offered by Cleveland.
I also agree on Levert. He has a name and reputation that has consistently got him minutes when not hurt. Plus I think he is a native of Ohio. He has some roots there.
