Nets head coach Steve Nash participated in the recent meeting between Kevin Durant and team leadership that ended with all parties agreeing to “move forward” with their partnership and focus on basketball. Nash also received a vote of confidence from team owner Joe Tsai earlier this month when word first broke that Durant had asked Tsai to trade him or to fire Nash and general manager Sean Marks.
Still, while Nash’s job may be safe for now, it’s hard to imagine he feels fully secure heading into a season in which the Nets are under pressure to finally deliver on their tantalizing potential and make a deep playoff run. Tsai wasn’t going to give in to Durant’s public request to fire Nash this summer, but it’s not as if Nash’s résumé in his two years coaching the club is spotless — if Brooklyn gets off to a slow start this season, his seat could start to get very hot.
Of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, Nash might be the one whose hold on his job is most tenuous, but there are others who will be worth keeping an eye on over the course of the 2022/23 season.
There was some chatter about Tom Thibodeau‘s job security during a disappointing Knicks season in ’21/22, and while it didn’t amount to anything at the time, that chatter will likely pick up again if New York underachieves for a second straight year after signing Jalen Brunson in free agency.
The Sixers are also under some pressure to take a major step forward this season, and while I’d be a little surprised if Doc Rivers is fired, it’s worth noting that he joined the team before president of basketball operations Daryl Morey did, so he wasn’t a Morey hire. If the 76ers fall short of their expectations and exit the postseason early, I could envision Rivers and the team agreeing to “mutually” part ways.
Chauncey Billups only has one year under his belt as the Trail Blazers‘ head coach, so he shouldn’t be in any immediate danger, but expectations will be significantly higher for Portland this year than they were at the end of last season. The same goes for the Hawks and head coach Nate McMillan, as well as Wizards and head coach Wes Unseld Jr.
Dwane Casey of the Pistons and Stephen Silas of the Rockets have been tasked with overseeing rebuilding projects, so it’s difficult to assess their job performances based on win-loss records. As those teams’ rebuilds begin to move into a new stage, it will be interesting to see if Detroit and Houston remain happy with the jobs that Casey and Silas are doing.
We want to know what you think. Are there any head coaches you believe are already on the hot seat, or ones whose jobs might be in danger if they get off to poor starts this season? Head to the comment section below to weigh in with your thoughts and predictions!
Brooklyn Nets going back to the Dr.J uniforms
Doc Rivers both will be looking for job next summer. He is the mist overrated coach of all time. Nash maybe able to work with Simmons but I don’t see him surviving. He has not made a move that seemed to work in the last 2 playoffs. Billups will show he can coach. Thibs i don’t think will win in NY. He has no personality or pizazz. I think Mike Brown will show he can coach for the Kings.
I always finding it interesting how people other than Ben Simmons can dislike someone like Doc, especially from a Celtics fan. The guy literally coached the only championship team they’ve had in the last 36 years.
Who cares about the coach tho lol Leon Powe had more to do with Cs winning that title than Doc & he was the 10th most important guy on the team
And the year before they got their Big 3 they…..
@Spike:
I’m sure Morey is itching to hire D’Antoni.
I agree with you Doc Rivers is the most overrated head coach of all time!!! I think the Philadelphia 76ers are going to have a pretty good season so I think he’s safe.
Steve Nash shouldn’t never got job but he’s the worst head coach in the history of the NBA.
The Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch isn’t good at all. He’s the exact reason they lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in last years playoffs. He needs to be replaced after this season by either Frank Vogel or Quin Snyder.
I think Nate McMillan is safe because I think the Atlanta Hawks going to have a nice season.
I think Wes Unseld Jr. is safe as well because they going to compete for a playoff spot.
Dwane Casey and Stephen Silas still needs time so I think they safe.
Tom Thibodeau definitely need the New York Knicks to be better to keep his job.
I think Chauncey Billups safe because I see the Portland Trail Blazers being much better.
The head coach I’m most concerned with is Steve Clifford. I know it’s his first season but second stint. I think without Miles Bridges I think the Charlotte Hornets going to take a major step back.
Nets should go back to New Jersey. Brooklyn move has been curse so far and most New Yorkers are Knicks fans.
Tye Lue will be on the hot seat if they don’t win a ship.
Yea bc they were having so much success in jersey.. lol @ Ty Lue about to be fired. Who is this guy? He gotta be a hoopsrumors writer or something lol
They won 2 ABA titles and went to the finals back to back when they were in New Jersey but you probably don’t know that kid.
I said Tye Lue will be on hot seat if he fails to win with Kawhi back from injury and new decent acquisitions ( Powell, Covington).
Pretty sure that was the New York Nets that won those ABA titles & the team largely stunk when they were in Jersey but I’m just a kid lol what do I know… also Lue will be just fine, obviously
Nah they won these titles when they used to be the Americans Nets.
Lol did they delete my comment about the Serb/Greek game coming up?
NBA league pass should acquire the rights for the Eurobasket. Fans shouldn’t have to use fishy streaming websites to watch the games.
I sorta like how it’s exclusive to ppl that really enjoy watching high level basketball & not just guys that enjoy hating on high level basketball players. This isn’t EuroBasket tho. It’s World Cup Qualifying games. EuroBasket is next week
Don’t know where you guys watch the games but it doesn’t have to be fishy or exclusive.
Sank is just exclusively fishy.
1. Steve Nash
2. Doc Rivers
3. Tom Thibodeau
4. Billy Donovan
5. ?
Mash has to be the favourite without doubt but I’m sure one of the poorly run franchises will sack their coach (Hornets, Kings, etc etc)
Mike Dantoni is probably already being lined up to take over from Doc should he not start off strong. Already knows half the roster and the back room staff.
Pressure must be mounting on Thibs too, would love to see Doc end up there hahaha
How long has Doc milked that Celtics championship?
Say goodbye to Monte Williams if the Sun’s don’t win it. You could make a case Dainegualt in O.k.
Casey in Detroit might go if this Piston refresh restart does not blossom.
