2:10pm: The trade is now official, the Jazz announced in a press release.
5:39am: The Lakers and Jazz are finalizing a trade that will send guard Patrick Beverley to Los Angeles in exchange for Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Sources tell Wojnarowski that the deal is on track to be completed on Thursday.
Beverley, 34, is a talented perimeter defender who can be a positive contributor on offense as well. He helped get the Timberwolves back to the playoffs last season, averaging 9.2 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game in 58 appearances (25.4 MPG). He’s also a career 37.8% three-point shooter across 10 NBA seasons.
Beverley, who is on an expiring $13MM contract, was traded from Minnesota to Utah as part of the Rudy Gobert blockbuster last month. However, he was always viewed as a candidate to be flipped to a new team, given that the Jazz are in retooling mode.
According to Wojnarowski, Beverley – who was in Los Angeles as a Clipper from 2017-21 – was enthusiastic about the idea of joining the Lakers in a trade and was “thrilled” to learn of the agreement between L.A. and Utah.
The Lakers had long been viewed as a potential suitor for Nets point guard Kyrie Irving, who was considered the team’s top trade target this offseason. However, once Kevin Durant withdrew his trade request and it became clear that Irving would likely remain in Brooklyn, Los Angeles pivoted to acquiring another point guard without having to include Russell Westbrook and draft compensation in the deal.
Johnson, who is on an expiring minimum-salary contract for 2022/23, is an NBA journeyman, so Horton-Tucker is the centerpiece of the package headed to Utah. The former second-round pick had an up-and-down 2021/22 season for the Lakers, averaging 10.0 PPG, 3.2 RPG, and 2.7 APG in 60 games (25.2 MPG), but struggling to score efficiently, with a modest shooting line of .416/.269/.800.
Horton-Tucker is still only 21 years old, so the Jazz presumably view the athletic wing as a player with some untapped potential. He’s under contract for $10.26MM in 2022/23, with an $11.02MM player option for the ’23/24 season.
Both the Lakers and Jazz are candidates to make additional deals before the season begins.
L.A. still has Westbrook and its 2027 and 2029 first-round picks to dangle in trade discussions, and the idea of making a play for the Pacers duo of Buddy Hield and Myles Turner is even more intriguing now that the club has fortified its backcourt by agreeing to acquire Beverley. For now, the Lakers have $34MM in cap room for the summer of 2023, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Twitter link), which will be a factor the team considers as its weighs additional trades.
In Utah, meanwhile, Donovan Mitchell remains a trade candidate, and the Jazz would likely be open to discussing deals involving veterans like Bojan Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson, Malik Beasley, Mike Conley, and Rudy Gay as well.
Lakers doing Lakers things. This franchise needs a reboot.
No question they won this trade.
This is for real a very solid trade for the Lakers, THT is garbage, Pat Bev actually provides something this team didn’t have; a guard who tries on defense, I hope it blows up in their face but Lakers W here for sure
Same page. I think they also lucked up with getting out of that THT PO for next year.
1. Why would the Jazz do this?
2. Why trade a positive and claim a negative is the centerpiece?
3. Has to be a type-o at THT slash line because there is no way he11 he shot .369 from 3. He couldn’t shot .37 from 3 in a YMCA Rec League.
Jazz are in a rebuild. With Conley and Clarkson, there’s no reason to bury Bev on the bench, who will be in his walk year. They’re doing a favor to him while also seeing if they have a long term piece in THT to be a part of their future. His strength is not currently in the outside shot. It’s in volume scoring and penetrating into the lane. Perhaps the Jazz feel they can refine his game. I don’t hate this deal for them, because Beverley at this stage in his career was probably not going to bring anything in return other than a 2nd and matching salary, if that.
Why would somebody pay basically the MLE to have THT as part of their future.
College 30%
Rookie 30%
G League 30%
2nd Year 28% tore ligament in thumb
3rd year 26%
From 3. He can’t shoot. He was a early maturing guy that out tuffed players and his athletic upside is limited.
Basketball is about who can make the most threes. Your argument is moot.
It’s ok to have bad 3 point shooters on a team. His role would be to attack off the dribble and score in iso. And you are taking a chance on his ridiculous over 7 foot wing span eventually making him a good defender.
But they didn’t get a 2nd. They also didn’t get a matching expiring, they picked up almost 10 million in 2023/24 salary because why would he turn down his PO.
They didn’t trade Pat Bev for a net neutral they traded him for a net negative. If THT was on a rookie deal and made sub 5 million then okay I could see it. But to pay him 10 million but Divencenzo signed for 4 million, Jalen Smith for 4 million, Bruce Brown for 6.5 or GPII for 9 million is insane.
Why give up something when u could have gotten better for less on the open market.
Some of the dumbest recent deals.
This one if the Jazz don’t get picks.
Nets: Trading a 1st for the rights to pay Royce Oneale 8 million while letting Brown Bruce go for free to sign for 6.5 and you had his Bird Rights.
Kings: Trading a 1st for the rights to pay 15 for Kevin Huerter while letting Divencenzo sign for 4.5 while you could of had his Bird Rights and rights to match his RFA offer. All while adding a defensive specialist coach. Basically replacing Divencenzo, Harkless and Holiday, all capable defenders for a guy Mike Brown is going to be unhappy with on defense. I like Huerter but Brown runs a rotation defense that has guys recovering a lot and foot speed is important. Sabonis, Huerter amd Fox on the court at thebsame time will be a nightmare defensively.
Spot on Qb1
Even if 2023 goes belly up for the Lakers they still win this trade as they went from having 21 mill in open cap to 32 open cap NeXT year
Also correct Tht only stays if he’s NOT worth the option on the market….which I see happening
The shooting form is just so so bad…pushes the ball, no follow thru, doesn’t incorporate his legs into his shot and it’s super slow to get off
I’m not sure the Los Angeles Lakers going to trade Russell Westbrook now. I think they like the fact they will have $34 million next off season. That’s enough for a max player name Kyrie Irving. Then they can keep their 2027 and 2029 first round picks.
If you trade for Buddy Hield and Myles Turner you have to think Buddy Hield had multiple years on his contract so it will eat that money up. Then you will empty the cupboard for Buddy Hield that is a defensive liability.
I agree Champ , at least wait till the break
But….
This things much bigger than a value summary. The LBJ timeline could force some things into some sharper turns than one might like. Agree tho, Heilds 20 mill next year would create a huge obstacle albeit setting 2023 up pretty nice –
I could into the first half using Russ as a wildcard and letting him dictate his pt/role (he’s got a lot to prove himself for his own career) No need to baby him, have him fight for anything he gets, might prove as a nice motivator….If he doesnt work out still just put him on blocks till the Trade deadline and use the salary+picks then to upgrade at a lot cheaper cost and a ton of different options to sift thru
Yes, muscle memory had me typing a 3 at the start of the three-point percentage. That’s been fixed, thanks.
It wasn’t just muscle memory it was also that no one expects to be typing .269 when thinking about a point guards 3 point %. When thinking about a NBA players with so called promise the .269 seems like it would be the type-o not the other way around.
Agree. I can only think the Jazz are doing the “make Beverly happy” by trading him to a contender thing that we hear so much in the NBA. I can’t believe that they couldn’t find a better deal for him that includes some decent draft capital.
Although I was surprised by his trade to the Grizzlies and his trade away from the Grizzlies as well. I wonder if there is a personality thing that teams want to get rid of???
On a different note, when Westbrook becomes a free agent, does he sign with an actual championship contending team or just a pretend tanking team that will just give him the ball and let him go like AI did at the end of his career? What superstar (Giannis, KD, Embid, Doncic, Jokic, tatum, Curry, Booker) wants him on his team?
It might be a personality thing. I think its also a thing where a guy doesn’t even want to go to a potential tanking team. Iggy did the same in Memphis.
It might be a thing where the vet is going to be clearly currently better in practice and games yet knows he won’t get playing time that matches and it’s just a bad chemistry situation.
Imo
Pat Bev is a better player currently (without a doubt) and will also beat THT is Wins Above Replacement over the next 4 years even if Pat Bev retires after 2.
The Los Angeles Lakers need to start
SF LeBron James
PF Anthony Davis
C Thomas Bryant
SG Patrick Beverley
PG Russell Westbrook
Then the bench should be
PG Kendrick Nunn
SG Lonnie Walker IV
SG Austin Reaves
PF Juan Toscano-Anderson
C Damian Jones
That looks like a very dangerous team to me if they buy in to what Darvin Ham wants out of them.
Sadly the aging and or oft injured lakers are far from a contender friend.
Oh yes, “contender” was a stretch but at least they are pretending to be maybe contending. With James, AD, LA’s salaries, and Laker nation you sorta have to say you are a contender.
Because they like the overrated THT.
This is a good trade for both teams. The Los Angeles Lakers need a player like Patrick Beverley. He’s a fiery competitor that plays with a edge and brings plenty of toughness. He’s a savvy veteran and the type of player that you love to play with and hate to play against. He brings defense and three point shooting and that’s two things the Lakers desperately need.
Talen Horton-Tucker is still only 21 years old and perfect for a rebuilding team. Stanley Johnson is put in the trade to make the money match.
Why would the Lakers do this? They already have one of the oldest rosters in the league. Or did last year. They trade away every asset in order to do what? Bring Bron his buddies. F’d. For the next 5-10 years down the road after he retires this is a 20 win team with no picks. Gutted.
Lakers were the 8th youngest team in the league before Bev
Jazz are tanking so you lose some trades to get worse which they did. There is a small chance THT develops into something but not this year. Utah wants THT jacking threes at a 27% clip to get more ping pong balls in the hopper.
This team continues to have an identity crisis. Lakers decided to push for budget friendly youthful free agents because they were too slow and fragile last season. THT was their only real trade chip of value and they cashed it in on Beverley. I assume the pivot is due to LeBron’s extension demands of win now. While Beverley will clearly lead the backcourt defense, I’m not confident he’s going to give them 30+ quality minutes a night and would be shocked if he remains healthy all season. Love his edge and leadership, but this is another move that could blow up in the Lakers’ face.
It was 0 about budget, they just only had the taxpayer midlevel. They got walker so I guess that’s what you referencing. But I’m sure they offered their full midlevel to tucker too.
Huh? Walker, Toscano, Brown, Bryant and Jones were all brought in on the cheap. That’s how they filled their roster because that’s all the funds that they had to work with. It has everything to with the confines of the cap they had to work with.
-I think the CBA decided, not the Lakers
-They didnt have the full MLE at hand only TP-Mle (Big Diff )
I saw Tht as an underwater asset willing to flip for any kind of expiring even adding a 2nd (JRich and T ross came to mind) – They scored big time here with no draft capital and actually getting a good player who fits
I guess when you are blowing 2 1sts, Turner/Buddy and 8M in cap savings is better than the combination of players from Utah that they were discussing. Have to imagine it was 3 players and Bev was part of it.
I thing beaverly is a good role player will fit well next to Lebron he can play off the ball but he is getting up their in aged . Still will not push the lakers to the second round of the playoff . THT will get a chance to have the ball more in Utah in the second unit let’s see if he can develop
I’m thinking THT prob gonna be with that 1st unit in Utah for the foreseeable future… & it’s gonna be a healthy LeBron & AD that push LAL past the 1st rd of the playoffs moreso than Pat Beverley
You really don’t know or watch basketball.
If they end up with Pat Bev, Buddy Hield & Myles Turner for Russ, THT & a couple of far off 1sts to go along with resigning Bron & hiring DHam, this would be a pretty sweet off-season for the Lakers. Beverley/Hield/Bron/AD/Myles plus Nunn/Lonnie/Reaves/TBJr/Stanley/JTA is an extremely tough team with balance/experience/shooting 1-10
Sank, da ya thk tha AR and PpH wood hav bin a betr pikup?
Totally agree, if they can get Schroder too. This roster is a total upgrade from last season. Still, AD and LBJ health is the more importante thing.
Stanley was traded to Utah and nobody is taking on that Westbrook contract for positive value
Sub in TBryant for Stanley & 3 teams already have
Have to follow this up with the Russ and 2 first for Heild and Turner deal.
Then I’d continue with getting Schroder and also grab Tristan Thompson both for the vets min.
Beverly Heild Bron AD Turner
Schroder Walker Brown Jr Bryant Thompson
Nunn Reaves JTA and Jones
Much much better looking line up.
Good spacing, good defence, good intangibles, unsure on the coaching but if that’s any good this team will be a tough task in the playoffs
Bev and Westbrook on the same team..if there was ever a time for the NBA to veto a trade it’s now
Pat Bev to the Lakers means that Russ is likely gone
Maybe it’s a move to get Russ to take less on a buy out. Who else is out there that Russ hates, so they can alienate him even more.
Pat Bevs and Westbrook on the same team? It’s like Isaiah Thomas and MJ on Bulls.
ATTN: every single Lakers fan who argued that Talentless Horton Tucker was better than Jordan “multiple buzzer beaters in the NBA Finals” Poole – you dont know ball and never ever will.
THT is probably gonna be around 20ppg this season lol maybe wait til there outta their early 20s before we make final judgments like that
You wouldn’t know ball if your name was Brad Miller and Shaq was dunking on you.
“Talentless Horton Tucker” Hahahahaha!!!!
Excellent move by the lakers. Bev is a tough minded good role player who rebounds, passes, shoots and defends well. He’s become a good leader as shown in Minnesota. Russ better get it together or he will be riding the bench because Bev will fit with Bron playing the point.
So is Indiana going to cooperate? I bet Car;isle votes no.
Pretty sure he knows they’re in a rebuild
But but but THT was untouchable!!
Was…until he proved last season that he isn’t that great and makes bad decisions with the ball.
He needs development in a more stable environment. That’s not the Lakers. Should improve with the Jazz by next Summer. Not much time before training camp to do as much this year. Although, Coach Hardy might have a better usage for him this year. Adding Stanley Johnson was a nice move as well. I like this trade.
Jazz will never win a championship bad organization LOL
Weird trade – nothing to see here?
So the much valued THT goes for someone who Russ doesn’t get on well with…
This has explosion written all over it… Mainly because trading Russ is still going to take a while…
Most of the media will be eating up every minute of content they can drag out of Russ and Pat Bev…
Give me 10 games of them being passive aggressive team mates for the laughs…
No brainer for the lakers. They have hopes of the playoffs and if they face the Suns or The Warriors early as 1-8 or 2-7, Patrick Beverly practically neutralizes Chris Paul and Steph Curry just through frustration. That gives the Lakers a shot somehow if they can match up with all the other positions. They gave up nothing but a young wing who’s developing. Absolutely no brainer. Plus it’s an expiring deal.. Beverly has just a one year contract. Great move for them at this time.
Probably a decent move for the jazz. I don’t see anyone else wanting Patrick Beverly AND giving up a young piece for him. Remember there’s an NBA salary floor and if the Jazz are purging, they’re going to need a couple guys making 10 million. Can’t all be minimum contracts. To them THT salary is really nothing even with the player option after this season. Trading an older guy you don’t want for a 21-year-old who’s hungry to prove himself is a decent move.
I liked this deal for the Lakers until I saw that it included Stanley Johnson. He was one of the bright spots last year in an otherwise underwhelming season. They did add some other bench pieces but he’s one of the guys I would’ve like to see stick around.
Stanley Johnson was a crap shoot. You try to shuttle in these guys that are begging for work and hope one of them fits. I don’t think it will be a problem finding a replacement because there’s lots of guys out there who will do the Dirty Work, play fantastic defense, and keep quiet about playing time. Lots of hungry guys out there. Sometimes you strike gold with Gary Payton 11 or to a lesser degree Stanley Johnson. Even Patrick Beverly first starting out had to go overseas for 2 years before Houston gave him a chance as a hungry Young guy.
Lakers: pleeaseee! start Russ and Pat Bev, I promise i will watch on league pass
It’s a ploy to make Russ leave.
The should’ve brought Zaza back from retirement before Westbrick opted in.
Please do not facilitate any Lakers trade. Just let them sink.
Wonder if they feel THT has more value than a 1st rounder or if the market for Bev was too shallow to get one. Big W for Lakers.
Nice move by LAL. Great fit in terms of both skill set and mind set.
Imo Lakers should just wait till the deadline now to make its next moves –
2 unprotected 1sts for a major inj risk in Turner and Buddy possibly underwater Heild would be a steal for Indy. Wait till the TD, the price is chopped in half – Not to mention many many many other possible situations arise ,,,,,ones that probably don’t take 2/3’s the 2024 cap up on a guy like Buddy friggin Heild
The snowball may have too much inertia now to stop – 1 unprotected and a swap is where Id draw my line tho ….. Least they could trade the 2030 pick next year to a tanker to take on Buddy’s 20 mill they will need to clear for a bigger fish in free agency
Is Beverley a better player than Westbrook at this point?
Individually no, but as someone you want on your team? Yes. Russ is past the time of “building a team” around him and has yet to realize that. That kinda makes him un-usable in really any team nowadays.
PBev is far more useful, beneficial, and effective. Not as athletic as Westbrook but a better decision maker, same quality of shooter, is defensively strong, is a general disrupter, and is a good teammate. Russell only brings random bursts of energy, no defense, and a lot of turnovers at this point.
Same quality of shooter?
I disagree, Pat Bev is a career 38% three point shooter while Russ is a career 30% three point shooter.
Pat Bev is a far better 3 point shooter
Let’s get old – get rid of the draft picks. Their screw-in themselves to the bottom!
Get old?
Lebron, Russ and Pat Bev are the only players on the team that are above 30 years of age and the rest of the roster have players who are below 30 so they are definitely not an old team in general.
