While it’s clear they’re seeking several first-round picks in exchange for Donovan Mitchell, there have been conflicting reports over which Knicks players the Jazz would prefer in such a deal.
According to SNY TV’s Ian Begley, Utah continues to have strong interest in Knicks wing RJ Barrett. Evan Fournier’s name has also come up in discussions — his contract would certainly facilitate a deal from salary-matching purposes.
The Jazz would also want at least one of the trio of Obi Toppin, Quentin Grimes and Immanuel Quickley, Begley adds.
The Knicks have softened their stance on potentially dealing Barrett, with some of their decision makers willing to part with Barrett in a Mitchell deal, according to Begley’s sources. However, there are several voices of influence in the organization, Begley notes, so it’s no certainty they’d actually give up Barrett.
We have more on the Knicks:
- Rick Pitino, who coached them in the late ’80s and currently coaches at Iona, said that Mitchell would “love” to wear a Knicks uniform, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post. “Donovan loves the Knicks,’’ Pitino said. “Donovan loves being around his mom, sister and dad. Donovan would treasure being a Knick. That being said, things have to work out. I’m hoping, keeping my fingers crossed that he becomes a Knick. It would be very special for me as a coach seeing him in a Knick uniform as an ex-Knick coach.”
- Barrett is a member of Team Canada, but he won’t play in the World Cup qualifying game against Argentina this week, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News tweets. He’s reluctant to risk taking the court with a potential financial windfall looming. Barrett is eligible for a rookie scale extension this offseason.

That’s just wishful thinking, RJ Barrett will not be traded in any Donovan Mitchell package.
I honestly think Donovan Mitchell will get traded to the New York Knicks.
Is RJ afraid of crossing the street or taking a shower too? SMH!!!
I would be. Never forget Isiah Thomas
Two new DM trades to the Knicks ideas:
1.
Knicks: Donovan Mitchell and Otto Porter Jr
Jazz: OG Anunoby, Obi Toppin, Cam Reddish, IQ and 4 first round picks (2 unprotected)
Raptors: RJ Barrett and Evan Fouriner
Knicks line up Brunson Spida Porter Randle Robinson better defensively, better spacing and saves them a first and don’t have to work out extensions for RJ or Reddish.
Jazz get better players and 1 lass pick
Raptors get the Mapple Mamba for OG. RJ returns home and would be a huge building block for the future. Fouriner is needed as salary matching but he’s moveable.
2.
Knicks: Donovan Mitchell and Ousmane Deing
Jazz: Evan Fouriner, Josh Giddey, Obi Toppin, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and 4 firsts (1 Thunder)
Thunder: RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish
Knicks get Spida and Deing as the new SF, while saving themselves picks and not having to work out extensions.
Jazz receive Giddey and Toppin to start the rebuild but do have to swallow Fouriner
Thunder decide they want to start trying to win games now. SGA and Barrett Canadian duo plus Chet obviously. Reddish is also a handy addition
These trade ideas are definitely some of the best I’ve seen involving Mitchell. OG would potentially be a lateral move. He’s practically a veteran now, but fits their age timeline.
Giddey would likely need another year or two to be consistent, but I like him a lot for the Jazz.
Thanks for the Jazz OG would be a good player but not good enough to win them heaps of games and they would still be in the running for a too draft pick. Toppin and Reddish would be good wait and see what you get prospects.
However I like the Giddey idea alot more. He’s someone who is good but not going to lead you just yet. Perfect for him to learn and be the focal point in a ranking season then get Victor in the draft
Thunder are NEVER trading Josh Giddey for RJ Barrett
Lol at giddey plus for Barrett.
Please stop the Raptors are not getting RJ, but if Toronto really wants Fournier that badly the Knicks should definitely look into that. I hope Mitchell goes somewhere other then NY. The Raptors would be perfect for DM. RJ stays in NY. Smh
RJ in Toronto would be cool.
FVV Trent Jr RJ Barnes Otto Porter Siakim Thad Young Precious Boucher
A side that would strongly push for a playoff spot and make a playoff run. Filled with potential and young enough to continue developing and improving
New York Knicks get
Donovan Mitchell
Rudy Gay
Utah Jazz get
R.J. Barrett
Obi Toppin
Evan Fournier
4 First Round Picks
This is a trade that can benefit both teams. Donovan Mitchell will bring that flare and home grown talent to Madison Square Garden. Rudy Gay will be a solid backup Power Forward for Julius Randle.
The Utah Jazz will get a nice young solid SF in R.J. Barrett that they can groom. Then I can see Obi Toppin career taking off in Utah just off the simple fact he will have the opportunity to flourish and Evan Fournier just included for salary matching purposes. Danny Ainge will try to get three or all four of them picks to be unprotected.
@Champ- Nah that trade seems a little too Gay for me! Pass!
He did say “groom.”
The trade I would do is quickly, Fournier and two unprotected 1 st round picks and three conditional. We get Spida. I don’t want to include Obi, RJ, nor Grimes. Those three have potential to be starters and possibly all stars. I want to include Cam Reddish as another keeper because I believe he’s capable of being a star.
Also as McBride because we are stocked with guards.
So RJ, Toppin, Fournier, Reddish, and three 1sts? I really don’t see that from the Knicks perspective. I think they’d rather add more 1sts than put RJ and Toppin in a deal together.
Also have no idea why the Thunder would trade Giddey, Dieng, and a 1st for RJ and Reddish. That makes them a worse team, especially when you consider they’d need to re-sign RJ.
Otto can’t be dealt till Jan 15 I believe
These are good trades for the Jazz, but the knicks lose both and the thunder are not doing the second.
I love Mitchell, but once we got JB, my want for him faded. I love JB too & he WILL breakout this year, but we should’ve waited/pushed for Spida FIRST.
That said, if we can wait it out & get Mitchell for Fournier, Reddish, McBride, and more picks, then fine, add him. MAYBE I’d be ok adding IQ, maybe…
Our MAIN focus now should be keeping RJ,Obi, and IQ if possible. And parallel to that is trading Randle. I was happy when we signed him. I went nuts watching his MVP caliber season 2 years ago. But if you REALLY watched NYK last year, which I sadly watched every game (and every post game, I hate Wally), Randle was the SOLE reason for a good 10 losses last year, probably more. His incessant dribbling, forgetting you’re allowed to pass, and untimely turnovers KILLLLLED us.
I base this on nothing but watching NBA for 40 years, but I got a hunch LAC wouldnt be able to resist adding Randle to their ever closing window. And with the West still kind of open, while this trade may not be the “star name” trade people like, I think we can give Clips Randle and get Kennard and Marcus Morris in return.
We need 3pt shooting, with or without Fournier. And Morris adds veteran toughness down low. Moving Randle’s boring, ball hog game also FULLY allows what eveyone loves to say, but dont seem to understand— the Knicks being RJs team! Plus, opens up a spot for Obi to start and get REAL minutes— and we all saw the exciting team we can be when he starts. And with JB at the point, Obi would be that much better.
I’d even go a step further and FORCE Thibs’ hand to play the kids, and do Russell Westbrook trade. I loathe him, but freeing up 47 mil in 1 year would be HUGE. So either give Russ a 20 game tryout to COME OFF THE BENCH and be the facilitating point guard we know he can be (but just DOESNT), so he can improve his legacy, or just release him immediately.
Hurts to say this, but after the Randle-Kennard/Morris deal, get Russ for Rose/Fournier/Reddish. That should still leave us room to sign Carmelo.
Brunson, Grimes, RJ, Obi, Mitch;
–IQ,Kennard, Morris, Melo, Hitman Hartenstein, with Sims and McBride is a deeper, more athletic, exciting, COMPLETE team. It just depends on if you believe/trust that RJ, Obi, Grimes, and IQ are the real deal, which I certainly do. And I do do even MORE, because I KNOW Brunson will prove all the morons who said he got overpaid wrong; he would be the floor general that gets the whole team involved and makes the other 4 on the floor with him BETTER…oh, and JB can score.. or did no one see him DOMINATE in the playoffs, especially round 1 without Luka???
THATS the smarter move for the Knicks now and in the future, which starts next offseason when you gotta extend RJ Barrett. And best yet, youd be able to keep probably all the draft picks to use on a different “disgruntled superstar” who is a better fit than my man Spida. And/or you can package picks and make a real move UP in the next draft…. team FIRST. No Randle. No Donovan Mitchell. No long term, big money on the ACTUAL overpaid guys on this team + More minutes for THE KIDS = BETTER, SUSTAINABLE KNICKS SUCCESS!!!
Wow you need to cut back on the caffeine.
“I love JB too & he WILL breakout this year, but we should’ve waited/pushed for Spida FIRST.” I stopped reading after that. If they waited, they get nothing.
I love this headline: Spida in Toronto!
Nets, intent on getting DM. Trade Ben Simmons to the Lakers for Brick and 2 firsts. Trade Seth Curry for a 1st. Trade 6 picks and Brick and Cam Thomas for DM and Clarkson.
Crazier things have happened but it’s kinda funny the Knicks got all these assets to make a huge deal and they can’t close on said huge deal. I think maybe, a recently traded player must be involved holding everything up til September tho.
Yes hopefully the Nyets get Spida! Anywhere but the Knicks! If the Knicks trade RJ, Fournier, Toppin, Quickley, and 4#1’s for Spida, then my new favorite team will be the Jazz. I know that sounds disgusting. Lmao!
Knicks won’t trade RJ, that much is already established. This media talk is just Ainge pushing to regain some leverage (spoiler: it won’t)
Don’t believe the hype on StarJ. Least efficient scorer in multiple spots on the floor. Best you can hope for is a Wiggins situation where he finds a home and a hole. He’s is not a 1st option and not a 2nd option. Tertiary scorer? Maybe.
Same complaints people had of him at Duke. And today people parrot the party line of “he’s gotten better every year tho”, or “he’s still young”, but a quick cursory search of views on him pre-draft and you’ll see the complaints from 4 years ago match his deficiencies today: lack of efficiency, lack of explosion, doesn’t make proper use of angles, needs to work on scoring in traffic, needs to work on his court vision and passing…
Heading into year 4 and those are the same thoughts about his game. Yeah he has scoring heaters here and there, but both Terrence Ross & Corey Brewer scored 50 in a game.. so I’m gonna need to see more than intermittent heaters from RJ.
The media doesn’t understand trade discussions. That may result in conflicting information from them, but not necessarily to them.
Trade discussions, until the very end, aren’t about offers. Until then it’s mostly about discussing potentially available players around relative valuation to outline what potential proposals might look like. I’m sure Barrett was discussed. I doubt he’ll be included in any actual proposal from or seriously considered by the NYK, and if he is, I can guarantee the rest of the package won’t look anything like the proposals that don’t include him.
The NYK have one decision maker (Leon Rose). Everyone else is an adviser. At least as to personnel decisions. WWW can decide what he’s going to wear to the meetings, I guess.
Yeah, the media definitely doesn’t know how to process information as well as you. Because, people generally suck at their jobs, compared to rank amateurs.
Good to know that even someone with your obvious limitations can stumble into a right answer once in awhile, even if not by design.
