The Lakers are giving “legit consideration” to the idea of bringing back free agent point guard Dennis Schröder, league sources tell veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein (Twitter link).
Schröder, who will turn 29 next month, was traded from the Thunder to the Lakers in exchange for Danny Green and a first-round pick during the 2020 offseason and spent one season in Los Angeles. The veteran guard averaged 15.4 PPG, 5.8 APG, and 3.5 RPG on .437/.335/.848 shooting in 61 games (32.1 MPG) in his first and only season as a Laker.
Schröder reportedly turned down a four-year extension offer worth approximately $80MM from the Lakers midway through the 2020/21 season, then had to settle for a one-year, $5.9MM contract in free agency a year ago. Following an up-and-down year in Boston and Houston, the German now seems likely to sign a minimum-salary contract in 2022/23 — that’s all the Lakers can offer, since they’ve already used their full taxpayer mid-level exception.
According to Stein, the odds of Schröder joining the Lakers will depend on “how the rest of their roster develops.” That’s a little vague, but Stein may be referencing the fact that Russell Westbrook‘s future in L.A. remains up in the air following a disappointing 2021/22 season. If Westbrook shows in the preseason that he still isn’t meshing with the Lakers’ starting lineup, the team could become more inclined to take a shot on Schröder.
A Westbrook trade may also open the door for a Schröder signing, but the Lakers would probably have to acquire multiple players in any deal involving the former MVP in order to match his $47MM+ salary. That would complicate the club’s ability to add another free agent after trading Westbrook.
Currently, the Lakers have 12 players on fully guaranteed contracts, with Austin Reaves and Wenyen Gabriel on non-guaranteed deals. Given that team salary is far above the luxury tax line, Los Angeles may open the season with its 15th roster spot open.
Schroeder is a nice piece for the right team. The Lakers would obviously be better with him as opposed to without him.
Yep. His 0 for 9 during his playoffs stint with the lakers, thats nothing compared with russ, LOL!
You’re talking about one game?
Deep thoughts.
God no.
Taking the min from a team that offered you 80 mil a year ago? That’s brutal
He’s made 75 Million bucks so far and he is 28 years old.
So, so brutal.
That’s Tough
I wonder if the Lakers are considering stretching and releasing Russ? or maybe Nunn has to be added to a Russ deal for matching purposes…Maybe Ainge wants too much for Pat Bev? Its going to be interesting!
The Lakers will be better giving Russ the Wall threatment and giving his minutes to Schroder 100%.
If they can trade Russ and get other starter quality player, by attaching those 1st round picks, they will be significantly better.
Now that KD is remaining in BRK maybe Irving isnt a real option for the Lkaers.
Like 6 No’s
Waive and stretchers should be treated like flat earthers…. with dignity and respect.
No real trades have taken place yet because of the Recently Traded rule. So.. September we’ll see some action. That’s when I suspect some dudes still out there will get signed to fill out rosters.
i really hope so
I hope he has a new agent now. I wish Hawks would’ve kept him to mentor TY and share some game instead of letting him jack up 3’s all night long.
He got maybe 3 or 4 more years in NBA then can retire with Bayern Munich or Alba Berlin.
If the Lakers sign Dennis Schroeder ….. then Russell Westbrook will likely be cut at some point.
That could be the case since the Lakers also have Kendrick Nunn.
Schroeder to sign Vet Min?
He bet on himself last year and now he paid the price for rejecting that 84 million dollar because he is looking for 100-120 million dollar deal.
Dennis Schroder is a solid piece in the right system. I think they have to be patient before they make a move on him.
I would rather have Dennis Schroder than Russell Westbrook.
He’s a better defensive player and better shooter.
You heard it here first! Westbrook to Charlotte is inevitable!
for who?
Hayward and Rozier for Westbrook and draft pick(s) would make the most sense. Intriguing fit on the court, and Kupchak might be willing to deal. However, I don’t see the Lakers committing to that much salary after this season.
I agree with you. I think the Charlotte Hornets is the only team that will be cool taking on Russell Westbrook for $47 million for one year. Without buying him out.
I’m just not sure if it’s worth it for the Los Angeles Lakers to try and move him with picks for anything out on the market.
On the court, DS would be a good pick up for the LAL. He and RW were a surprisingly effective tandem in their 1 year together in OKC, and he played very well with LBJ and AD for most of his 1 year with the LAL. The baggage here likely means it’s not an ideal fit. On the other hand, if they can’t find a way to use RW’s contract to get players on real contracts, then they’ll need to add talent any which way they can.
Love Dennis, spent most of his career as the main scoring option on the hawks before Trae, then went to OKC and was in the race for sixth man of he year, then had his run on the Lakers before everything more recently has turned to crap.
He plaus defence like Pat Beverly, really in your face, annoying, getting tips and steals and just harassing you. But offensively he can shoot efficiently, he can come off the bench, he can drop 20 if you need that. He’s just such as good well rounded guy.
The only areas I think he lacks is as a creator for others, his basketball IQ isn’t very high especially among point guards and just had a bit of bad luck more recently.
Really wish the best for him and I think the Lakers makes a lot of sense for him. Was hoping Atlanta would grab his as the back up to DeJounte and Trae and he returns back there it would’ve been awesome.
Hope LA manage to trade Russ in the Donovan Mitchell trade and get back a few more role players. If they could get Evan Fouriner, Bojan and Clarkson it would be a huge win. Get Tristan Thompson from FA for the min.
Schroder Fouriner Bron AD Thompson
Clarkson THT or Walker Bojan Johnson Bryant
Schroder gives you a 3 and D guard, Fouriner high IQ role player, Bron the leader, AD the sidekick, Thompson the grinder. Clarkson the sixth man, Bojan another go to scorer then younger more athletic back ups
It would be a good idea if they are keeping Westbrook
