Veteran point guard Patrick Beverley has had quite the jet-setting summer. He was involved in a second offseason trade today when the Lakers acquired him from the Jazz, who had landed him as part of their return package for Rudy Gobert. Los Angeles sent Utah swingman Talen Horton-Tucker and forward Stanley Johnson in the exchange.
Due to his involvement in that Gobert trade, Beverley couldn’t have be been aggregated with the contract of another player prior to September 6 this year, when his aggregate restriction expires. However, as Bobby Marks of ESPN (YouTube video link) notes, the Jazz didn’t have to wait until September to move Beverley because he was traded on his own in the deal with the Lakers.
Marks opines that the 6’4″ Horton-Tucker – whom Marks considers essentially a small forward more than a shooting guard – and the 6’6″ Johnson, who played mostly at power forward with L.A., are the better players in the deal and says their athletic upside is worth the risk for the Jazz. However, Marks believes that, as long as he is able to stay healthy, Beverley will be a better fit with Los Angeles than Horton-Tucker or Johnson proved to be.
Here’s more news and notes following the deal:
- In the wake of the Beverley trade, HoopsHype’s Yassi Gozlan considers possible next steps for both the Lakers and Jazz. Gozlan views Russell Westbrook as the next potential trade domino to fall in L.A., and expects Utah to consider offloading other veterans on its roster.
- Both the Jazz and the Lakers benefited from the deal, per Zach Harper of The Athletic, who grades both clubs on the transaction. He notes that, in Beverley, the Lakers are adding a proven veteran poised to reinvigorate the club with contributions that go beyond the box score. On the Utah side of the equation, Harper writes that the Jazz are essentially banking on the 21-year-old Horton-Tucker’s potential.
- Rohan Nadkarni of Sports Illustrated also weighed in with his own trade-grade column, giving both clubs mediocre, passing scores.
- Talen Horton-Tucker will get plenty of opportunities to play with the ball in his hands in Utah, which could be the best use of his unique skill set and physical gifts, opines Sam Vecenie of The Athletic. Horton-Tucker was a clunky fit in Los Angeles as a below-average three-point shooter who failed to consistently defend at a high level. As an athletic creator, Horton-Tucker has shown flashes of intrigue with his drive-and-kick playmaking. The Jazz will be able to give him more time to develop and improve in his current areas of strength, away from the win-now pressures of L.A.
“Talen Horton-Tucker will get plenty of opportunities to play with the ball in his hands in Utah”
…presuming BOTH Mitchell and Clarkson are traded, otherwise he could be standing under the basket all alone and never see the ball as Mitchell and/or Clarkson takes on 3 defenders!
For all that, the number of times Mitchell can make 3 defenders look silly is amazing, though passing would still be the better choice and increase his value to the team.
Also, the number of times that Mitchell’s defense has made people he is guarding look like offensive superstars is also amazing.
Don’t forget Conley/Beasley/bojan/NAW, however I do wonder is THT now draftable in fantasy as your last round lottery ticket, what do you fellas think?
If they go full rebuild Butler will get minutes as well.
THT will get opportunities. That doesn’t make him any better of a player than what he showed with the Lakers.
Idk just look at Ball, Ingram, Randle, Clarkson, Dlo etc etc a lot of young guys thrive after leaving the Lakers.
I think if they go full scale rebuild and THT can get a good amount of minutes he could really establish himself a name and this deal will look great for the Jazz
My trade grade
Lakers B
Jazz C
Tucker potential is limited
Hahaha what happened to THT being the next big thing?? I didn’t forget you saying those exact words on every single Lakers story last season. Oh how the turn tables
Not if they pass the ball to a wide open THT for a 26% 3 pointer.
Now they traded away their only trading chip. The good thing is no more rumors about who they will be picking up now that they have nothing left to trade.
I mean the 2 first rounders have way more value
It does kinda feel like the Jazz set them and maybe the Lakers to for another trade. Perhaps because Beverly couldn’t be added with other players that there’s another Lakers/Jazz trade? It all depends on if the Jazz are done retooling and want more draft picks or instead more young players?
It’s reported the Lakers and Hawks want Bojan. One would be for picks and the other for possibly John Collins?
I’d say Atlanta’s Collins & Hunter for Utah’s Bojan & Vanderbilt. Thoughts?
The Atlanta organization has recently made it clear that they “love” John Collins. He is not going anywhere right now. Only way he moves is if Atlanta stumbles out of the gate.
As a fellow Jazz fan I would love the trade but that proposal very heavily favors the Jazz. The Jazz would have to throw in a couple of the 1sts they got from Minnesota which I’d be fine with as well.
Not.
I am starting to think the Miami Heat are going to end up with Donovan Mitchell. Utah is gonna have to pay somebody to ultimately avoid the Salary Cap floor. It might as well be Tyler Herro. Herro is maturing with a 2nd kid on the way.
Miami has to counter what is going on in Brooklyn if they want to make a title run. Got to believe they would like to make a deal for Mitchell and maybe add in Vanderbilt?? I am sure Utah would want Max Strus. However, they might have to take Duncan Robinson to make the money work.
Sadly the heat are way short of the available assets required to pull off a trade for Mitchell. Not enough picks, herro as a centerpiece is blah. No I’d say mitch ends up a knick if moved.
Next time pay Alex Caruso instead of pocketing the $10M in payroll taxes.
If you’re trying to win that is. If they had AC now the roster would look much better.
How the hell Pelinka still got a job! The man literally traded Harrell, Kuzma and kCP and a 1st round pick for Westbrick and 2 seconds picks.
The Beverly trade won’t change anything, they have weak bench plus I don’t see AD being healthy all season long.
Should’ve just tried and trade for Conley too for Westbrook.
They couldn’t have combined any other player with Beverly yet, because of his aggregate restriction. Still could do a Conley trade before training camp.
How long before Ainge sells off the assets for a rebuild to work…
Despite the picks they got from the Wolves the Jazz need to be as bad as possible to get some high end draft picks…
In the West there is no point in being mediocre unlike in the east where you can be a mediocre team that makes the playoffs… The Jazz have to bottom out for a couple of years…
He was so hyped. That Stanley Johnson had to be thrown in to make a trade work. For Beverly ???? All Laker hype …. THT
Stanley had to be included for salary purposes
Id Imagine Jazz would rather have the roster space if they could do the deal w/ out him
I would say at least 90% of Laker fans have been off THT for a long long while
Except the Team has been pushing for a #1 pick for him. For two yrs now. Even gave him the money to make it look better. I’ve just never seen it. And never understood how teams buy into it. This is done in sports finance.
Putting the ball in THT’s hands is just another way of saying they’re in full tank mode… literally no way you can win like that
Tees up next deal. Russ and Gabriel plus 2 1st rounders and $5m in cash for Conley, Bo, Gay and Vanderbilt.
It needs two Firsts for someone to take Westbrook?
In the past, no. After last year? Very much so. Have to wonder if Westbrook and Randle did drugs that messed their brains up. Would explain why they made so many airhead plays last year.
The Jazz wouldn’t include Vanderbilt in a very thin offer like that. Westbrook’s contract is ginormous and playing weird. The league has been pretty clear they’ll need 2 firsts to take that on. If you want Bojan and Vanderbilt then they would need to include more players than that.
Conley and Gay underwater themselves – No thanks w 2 firsts attached
The league wants two first rounders, but don’t forget you’ll need to match salaries or be under the cap to make the trade. Lakers could take Beasley instead of Vanderbilt. UTAH buys out Russ for cost of $20m. Saves $95M over two years with the players I mention and picks up two firsts.
THT seems like he’s better suited as a post player. He’s got a big body for his size. I say he would be better if he either slimmed down, and increased his speed, or put on more muscle, and improve his post moves, and rebounding.
He kind of reminds me of Antoine Walker. All THT needs is some back to the basket moves and he’d be really good!
I was always under the impression. THT strength was his D and potential as a D wing. So now you trade for D guy who is 34 yrs old. Shows how even the Lakers don’t believe their own hype.
The stories about buying out Westbrook. Can’t be true. He still would count on the books. So what’s the point. Lakers still have two picks they can use. Which I’m sure they will somehow. Their best deal is getting someone else’s disgruntled player. Or bad contract in return.
Just don’t see Westbrook playing with Bev. It’s like they are pushing him out.
THT is same style of player as Russ and LBJ. Needs the ball in his hands. Not a good 3 point shooter yet. So Bev is a strong defender and can shoot the three. We need 3 point shooters. I really loved THT the year before, but think BEV IS A GREAT FIT.
Russ would count on the books for salary cap, but a rebuilding team wants picks and actual reduced salaries. Buying him out saves them money. And sending players out with future years, like Conley, Gay, Beasley (UTAH) both creates cap space the next year and saves them money for 2 years. This year and next.
