The Magic will be ready with an offer sheet if Warriors guard Jordan Poole reaches free agency next summer, an unidentified Eastern Conference executive tells Sean Deveney of Heavy. Although Poole is an important contributor for Golden State, luxury tax considerations put his future with the organization in doubt. If he doesn’t reach an agreement on a rookie scale extension before the start of the upcoming season, he’ll be a restricted free agent in 2023.
“I’d watch out for the Magic to be ready to make an offer if he’s restricted, knowing there’s a good chance Golden State is not going to match,” the executive said.
The 23-year-old Poole is coming off his best season, averaging career highs with 18.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game and making 51 starts for a team that won the NBA title. He would provide some much-needed perimeter scoring for a young Orlando team that solidified its frontcourt with Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero in the last two drafts. The Magic could have close to $60MM in cap room and may be in range to add two max free agents.
There’s more from the Southeast Division:
- Former NBA player Jamal Crawford is downplaying a dispute between new Hawks guard Dejounte Murray and Banchero in a pro-am game last week, tweets Landon Buford. “There’s no issues; they’re brothers, competitive basketball court stuff,” Crawford said. “I’ve had spats like that with my brothers. There’s nothing to read into.”
- Hawks shooting guard Bogdan Bogdanovic has resumed training after knee surgery in May and recently posted Instagram photos of his workout with tennis star Novak Djokovic in Serbia. Bogdanovic was able to participate in Atlanta’s first-round playoff series against Miami, but underwent the operation shortly after the Hawks were eliminated.
- Jaime Echenique received a huge welcome when he returned to Colombia last month after becoming the first player from his homeland to appear in an NBA game, writes Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington. Echenique played just one game for the Wizards in December and spent most of the season with the team’s Capital City G League affiliate. He recognizes the importance of his accomplishment, but is focused on expanding his NBA opportunities. “He said you have to take this as big as it is,” Echenique said in relaying a conversation with a friend. “Out of the 75 years of the NBA, out of 50 million Colombians, you are the first one. I was like ‘Yeah, that’s a big deal.’ Whether it was a 10-day [contract] or three minutes or whatever people want to call it, I did it.”
Warriors will match the offer.
Magic can do sign and trade.
Warriors have no choice but to trade Draymond.
The earlier the better.
Why would the the Warriors want to match any offers for Poole? If they can get a sign and trade that allows them to resign Divencenzo, go for it.
Sillivan will be happy if the Warriors traded Bozo the Clown to Cleveland for Miss Marie Anne and the Warriors received Ren and Stempy from LA. Take your pick of teams. The salaries work. Dialing for Dollars might be a hold up. We might be able to work in a fourth team. Omaha has an afternoon host opening.
Probably on my own here but I think Poole is a little overrated. I think if you gave Moses Moody the chance he’d be putting up similar numbers. Cause end of the day having Curry Klay Wiggins and Dray as team mates, coach Kerr and the rest of the training staff really helps make it easier to put up the numbers he does.
Idk I think GSW should start the negotiations at 4/60. Then likely settle for something more like 4/80, wouldn’t really go any higher than that.
He’s gonna be on of those microwave 6th man scorers when he reaches his full ceiling most likely !
I agree, nothing against the guy. He’s got a great story. He worked hard and seems like a genuinely good guy but honestly Jordan Clarkson puts up similar numbers and is a better shot creator and only makes $13.3.
He reminds of Jamal Crawford
Exactly what Poole reminds me of too. Jamal Crawford a guy who can come off the bench and score but can’t play good defense.
@tacocat Really. You believe the Warriors should offer Poole triple the salary he would normally receive.
I feel confident in saying he will never play in a all star game and that’s not a insult at all ! Cj mcCollum, sga ,Jamal Murray are other guards who’ve never made a all star game and may never do so! He’s solid player though
Shoot sga just put u0 24 6 an 5 an didn’t get serious all star consideration I wouldn’t even put Poole as the next all star guard in the West over guys like sga , fox , Murray , bane , but it’s not a insult and he’s gonna win bigger then all those guys in the summer at least next year
IDK, Denver had a solid off-season. They acquired KCP and Bruce Brown to help Gordon out on defense, that along with Murray and Porter coming back off injury they should be a very good team. They’re right up there with the Warriors,Suns,Clippers,T-Wolves and Grizz. The top 6 in West are pretty closely matched.
Warriors, clippers, and (healthy) nuggets are a step above suns/grizz/mavs/wolves/pelicans imo
How can a player be overrated when he’s improved his play every single year?
You dont HAVE to have a take on everyone you know, its asinine. Jordan Clarkson? He doesnt have multiple Finals buzzer beaters. Moody is 19 and absolutely isnt anything near a similar shooter or player to Poole. What a clown take, they are going to age like milk in the sun. You two don’t know ball.
Ut oh.., you received the dreaded “you don’t know ball” from A’sfaninLexington.
Magic are going to max him, they like to overpay people in general.
If I’m the Warriors you’d have to atleast listen to trade offers wouldn’t ya?
If the Magic are very interested, then I wounded who they’d be willing to give up.
They have a bunch of point guards (Suggs, Cole, Hampton and Fultz) and GSW as far as young talent have Moody (SG), Wiseman (C), Kuminga and Baldwin Jr (F). They actually could do with adding a young back up point guard to learn from Curry and Kerr.
Let’s say they have discussions
Would Poole for Suggs and protected first be a good deal?
Cole Poole Paolo Issacs Carter Jr
Fultz Harris Wagner Okeke Bamba
Hampton Ross Houstan Bol Bol Mortiz
Poole would actually be a pretty good fit and the team would look pretty exciting.
GSW
Curry Klay Wiggins Dray Looney
Suggs DiVancenzo Kuminga Green Wiseman
McClung Moody Baldwin
Looks a little short in experience off the bench but really good young players coming through and obviously still a side build for winning.
Hampton a pg? huh?
Yes RJ Hampton is a point guard ….
If the warriors were to trade Poole I would believe it be for future first round pick or two because trading for another player would defeat the purpose of saving huge salary costs.
The guy they get in trade would need a new contract also right? Unless it would be a quality big man then I would trade Poole for players down the road.
Good thought though on Trading him. Better than letting him walk for nothing or having to match or sign and trade. But, may as well just keep him if they’re going to hold that salary slot?
Yea it would be pick centric. The Magic would have to trade someone for half the max, based on the salary matching rules. But it would be picks. Fultz and Isaac will be cut if the intend to pursue Poole. It would be Cole or Suggs and Poole.
Probably a Bamba (if guaranteed), RJ, and a 1st would be the type of trade they would offer.
It is a little to early to speculate on trades. But, if the Warriors could move Poole to resign Divencenzo, that’s an easy trade.
I see it as the Warriors can only resign 1 player between Wiggins and Poole. So one stays and the other leaves. Its going to come down to who is willing to take less money.
Best thing Warriors can do with Poole. Is sell high. A system guy. Nobody is maxing him out.
My hope is that Poole has a great year. They can get at least a 1st out of sign and trade for Poole. They can use the savings to resign Divencenzo, J. Green.
Wouldn’t the sign and trade defeat the purpose? They’d be taking that same money Poole is getting back in the trade.., may as well just keep Poole? The whole discussion here is that they can’t afford Jordan Poole and he needs to be moved.
Warriors have to be looking to replace Dre. I’d use Poole for that. Pick and a good young 4. Dre is an old 32. Small 4s don’t age well in NBA.
ORL might have interest in Poole, but I highly doubt they’ve decided to give him an offer sheet a year before they can, and even more that they’d tell this “executive” about it. Can he at least tell us the salary they plan to offer?
The only real question is does ORL, at this point, have so much interest in Poole (specifically) that they’re probably willing to trade real assets for him now, even knowing they’ll have to pay big to keep him after the season (with no leverage to prevent an overpay)-? Since the executive didn’t address this, I assume the answer is NO.
Real pleased for Echenique, seems like a great guy and what he has achieved for himself and Colombia can never be downplayed!
