AUGUST 26: The Spurs have officially signed Johnson, the team announced today in a press release.
AUGUST 16: The Spurs have reached an agreement on a one-year contract with forward/center Alize Johnson, agent George Langberg tells Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link).
Wojnarowski says the deal is worth $2MM, which suggests it’s a minimum salary contract. Johnson’s minimum this season is $1,968,175. The contract will be a non-guaranteed camp deal, according to Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News (Twitter link).
Johnson, 26, has bounced around the NBA since being selected with the No. 50 pick in the 2018 draft, appearing in a total of 72 games for Indiana, Brooklyn, Chicago, Washington, and New Orleans, including 23 in 2021/22 for the Bulls, Wizards, and Pelicans. He averaged 1.8 PPG and 2.7 RPG in 7.2 minutes per contest last season.
The Spurs are already carrying 13 players on fully guaranteed contracts, with Keita Bates-Diop and Tre Jones also on standard deals. San Antonio would have to trade or release one of those 15 players in order to make room for Johnson on the regular season roster in October.
Will this kid finally get a chance to show what he can do in the league? He’s done just about everything else you’d like to see on a professional level.
How do guys like this keep getting camp invites while guys like Boogie, Kemba, IT, Blake, Collin Sexton, Melo, etc keep getting snubbed when they’re all (or all should be) just asking for vet min’s with the exception of Collin
Kemba is currently with Detroit, the others have reached the stage where the are better, younger and healthier options available. They should all consider retiring at this point
All of them still want guaranteed contract plus a defined playing time/role. Additionally, they are all drama queens.
Sexton has a $40 million offer on the table. He is not getting snubbed, he just wants more.
@Deandre Booker… because he is worth way more than that, he is been dissed by CLE big time!
Kemba needs to go back to Charolette. I think IT should get a shot with the Timberwolves. They need bench scoring!
IT should get one more chance with the Celtics. Melon has another year in him. Kemba,Blake and boogie might be done. Maybe you should day Okafor,Giles and MCW cannot catch a break. Johnson is a 6’7 who should be playing SF. 6’7 at 215 is small for PF. He rebounds nice though
