No. 2 overall pick Chet Holmgren is undergoing further evaluation on his injured foot, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter links), who says the Thunder fear Holmgren has suffered ligament damage.
As Charania explains, exams on Holmgren’s foot have shown potential torn ligaments, and the big man is getting additional opinions to determine the severity of the injury and to set a recovery timetable.
Holmgren’s injury occurred during a pro-am game in Seattle on Saturday — he left the contest after rolling his ankle. Reports at the time indicated the injury didn’t appear serious, but it sounds like there’s cause for real concern now that the young center has undergone more tests. That pro-am game had to be stopped early due to slippery court conditions that were deemed unsafe.
Holmgren, 20, was drafted behind only Paolo Banchero this June after averaging 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game in 32 appearances (26.9 MPG) for Gonzaga during his first and only college season.
Holmgren’s ability to protect the rim and knock down three-pointers (.390 3PT%), along with his rare blend of length and athleticism, made him perhaps the most tantalizing prospect of the 2022 draft class, but his slender build raised questions about his ability to stay healthy going forward.
The Thunder aren’t expected to be a playoff team in 2022/23, but view Holmgren as one of the foundational pieces of their franchise in the long term, alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey. We’ll provide more info on his foot injury once we know more.
And so it begins… the most predictable outcome I’ve ever predicted lol
Exactly! As a Magic fan I am so grateful they passed on this slenderman. Dude has to run around in the shower to get wet.
Put on some weight man! Don’t be another Porzingis.
DunkonyoBass be like ….
“This dude is such a disgrace! How are you just drafted number two overall and you can’t take care of something as simple as a foot! The thunder are such a horribly run organization! They had Harden, KD, Russ, Ibaka, Jeff Green, all in one team and couldn’t get it done, they will never win a championship! I would move from OKC if I lived there because of that disgraceful pathetic team!”
Having more weight to carry around rarely equates to less injuries….
Ssh. Don’t wake them up.
I definitely understand where you coming from. I hope he isn’t a injury prone. The talent is there to be special. Regardless if he play the 4 or the 5 he needs to put some weight on. It’s Point Guards that way more than him.
Body made for the AND1 Tour… not the NBA
How about why was he playing on a surface that was clearly wet. He already has a lot of things working against him when it comes to weight. Torn foot ligaments???? See you in the 2023-24 season Chet.
Why was anyone playing on that court? Whoever was in charge of this thing, OR 1 or more of the big names participating should have boycotted as soon as they started warming up.
At what point do teams consciously knock down players over 7 feet simply do to the injury risk? Not saying Chet is or will be injury prone, but at some point the sample size of data points we have available will be big enough to wonder whether it’s worth it.
Or maybe there will always be teams out there who don’t care or are too captivated by the unicorns to factor this in. But I do think it’s a question worth pondering on.
Get better soon.
Love,
Seattle SuperSonics fan.
Hope you slip and fall in the shower.
You have to be super cautious with foot injuries even if means he might miss the entire season.
You can’t just be named Chet and not expect bad things to happen to you it just doesn’t work
Can’t write the kid off yet, we don’t even know how severe the damage is. As far as I know he doesn’t have an extensive injury history. He played all 32 games at Gonzaga. People are just pointing him out because of his height and unique body build.
Foot injuries in big men can be serious if theyre not properly taken care of. For instance Greg Oden, injuries like his kept him from playing. Also Joel Embiid Missed his first 2 years because of foot injuries. But you’re right, we can’t write him off and we don’t know the full extend of the injury. But better to play on the side of caution.
Didn’t Oden have bad knees?
Both, it started with a foot injury then ended with a left knee injury.
Finally, our revenge. Signed, Seattle
Seriously though, hope it’s nothing serious. Really looking forward to watching whatever Chet turns out to be.
I feel like Seattle’s revenge was OKC not being able to win a title with Durant, Ibaka, Harden, Westbrook and Perkins all on the same team.
3 of them won championships elsewhere so far.
Not trolling here but jeez all these Supersonics fans .. where were y’all at when the team was in Seattle ? Reminds me of all those Browns fans when they became the Baltimore Ravens .. But atleast they got a team back …
I remember there being raucous crowds in Key Arena in the 90s, even the 80s. It’s a big market. The OKC ownership group always intended to move them, not really fair to blame it on the fans.
Chet Holmgren has the talent but might not have had the body with one year of college to play with veteran big boy NBA players. Hope he’s ok but he’s awful thin.
Kd is awful thin
Chet is waayyy skinnier for his height than KD. No disrespect, but Chet legit look malnourished.
The result of lebron broke his ankle.
Who had summer injury in the Chet Holmgren injury pool?
At least he has a shot at ROY next season.
These guys shouldn’t be playing in pro-ams
Can they take a shower or cross the street?
Ya know Wall torn his leg in the bath, any activity is dangerous, right?
These beanpole-type players just don’t last.
See you in 2023, Chet.
Sounds like you’re a real expert on beanpole-type players.
Time to bring it full circle. Go trade for Durant, Harden, Westbrook,Ibaka and go sign thabo/Ferguson, see if Reggie Jackson wants to come back . Ask Scottie Brooks to coach. Ask nick Collins to come back and move back Seattle.
