SEPTEMBER 28, 9:07pm: Larranaga will be sticking with the Clipppers after speaking to the Celtics, sources tell Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated (Twitter link).
SEPTEMBER 28, 10:40am: The Clippers are granting the Celtics permission to speak to Larranaga, a league source tells Andrew Greif of The Los Angeles Times (Twitter link).
SEPTEMBER 27, 10:45pm: The Celtics are apparently looking to hire another veteran coach to assist interim head coach Joe Mazzulla.
They are seeking permission to talk to Clippers assistant Jay Larranaga about joining Mazzulla’s staff this season, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweets.
Larranaga is a familiar face in Boston. He joined Tyronn Lue‘s staff last season after spending nine years with the Celtics, including seven seasons as Brad Stevens’ top assistant.
Mazzulla was thrust into the spotlight when Ime Udoka was suspended for the season for violating team policy.
Repeating consonants are required to be on this Celtic’s coaching staff.
With Mazzula, Sullivan, Garrett, Dobbins, Matt Reynolds and possibly Larranaga you’re not too far off.
Unless Jay himself asks… why on earth would the Clippers grant permission for this? The season starts this week lol… man the Celtics are gonna be a dumpster fire.. how do you even let this go public? You just told the world you can’t trust your own coach lol… Brad Stevens either needs to put a whistle back on himself… or resign IMO.. he’s handling this horribly
Ha, ha! Our Celtics finished 2nd of 30 last season, did u forget that? And we have two young developing superstars, did you forget that? Yes, bad karma has struck w two key guys out already & losing our coach but a “dumpster fire” & having Stevens resign? Please! I’m frustrated like every other Celtic fan but … come on! Go Celtics!
Do you not comprehend how bad your organization has to be run to have an investigation that might result in your coaches termination end a couple weeks before the season starts? Do you have any idea how bad it looks on all of them that they’re trying to find “support” for their coaching replacement? Take your beer goggles off and realize this is major amature hour here… then realize who’s driving the clown car right now.
I think you’re blowing this way out of proportion. Are you suggesting they need to work on telepathy, mindreading, start acquiring crystal balls so they know when staff is going to do something inappropriate and suspension-worthy? You’re being very matter-of-fact, but I don’t think too many people will agree with you that 1) they’re a dumpster fire, 2) a badly ran organization, 3) have the ability to supress this from the public, 4) Brad Stevens should resign (lol what nonsense), 5) handling this horribly.
I’m no Celtics fan, but something tells me you’re a Sixers fan, maybe a Nets fan. The way you’re reacting to this is clearly biased.
I guess you missed them saying this investigation was “months long”… they should have sped it up and/or had a plan b in place.. and no I’m not a nets or 6ers fan lol.. I think the nets are more of a dumpster fire and the 6ers are snakes… I also didn’t say stevens should just resign.. I said he needs to take the coaching reigns or take responsibility of putting the team in a very bad position and resign for cause. The fact that they have no coach and let it leak that they are seeking more “support” on the coaching staff is beyond ugly man….. for context… how can a single player on that team take the new coach seriously after today?
The amateur hour starts when you think it’s spelled amature.
You sound angry
And the replacement is a domestic abuser
It’s not about trust with first year coaches. All are assigned someone that helps that person learn how to coach the team and not just the game.
Ime is rare example of someone whom looked in control without any senior help on hand to guide him through all the aspects.
It ain’t that easy.
What does that say about Udokas chances of coming back? Why would dude leave LA to come back to Boston to be demoted again next year if Ime comes back? Why would the Celtics waste their time pursuing that? This tells me that Udoka is our for good and that the guy Stevens REALLY wants running the show is Larranaga. Mazzulla is being set up for failure.
1) Udoka is toast.. probably for life after this.. maybe he can go to the NCAA but even then he will have a red flag over his head the rest of his life 2) The Celtics screwed themselves. They should have finished this “investigation” in early August the latest.. and had a real replacement in place… instead they look like their stumbling all over themselves and just basically told the world their new coach sucks lol
When the Celtics fire Ime, he’ll have a job within a week. Philly and the Nets would beg him to take their jobs.
Ime’s actions in Boston mean he can’t be trusted. No way he gets another HC job in the NBA.
They gave his job to a guy with domestic violence on his record. Jason Kidd got a job, I think many teams would forgive Ime when his suspension is up.
Boy you’re thick. It’s an outside independent investigation. The Celtics couldn’t “finish” the investigation early. Also they were short on an asisstent coach that’s why they want to hire another assistant. The only thing that sucks is that take
You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. Boston is handling this situation about as good as anyone could, for starters most teams wouldn’t have even suspended their HC in this situation. Boston is still easily a title contender this year no matter who their coach is.
So is Hardy. He is being charged with losing as much as possible.
No one sees it but me.
Udoka is absolutely done!!! Sit tight as the story unfolds!!
Yea I’m a Cs fan. When Matt Barnes had his back. Then a day later after hearing what really happened quickly changed course. You know it’s bad. It’s way more than just sleeping with a subordinate. It has to be.
If Barnes thinks it’s bad, this is really bad
Clippers should tell ‘em to to get stuffed. Doesn’t sound too good for the former Boston coaches chances next season. Maybe there’s more to come out
If I’m the Clippers, I’d let him go if Boston is willing to give up a draft pick. I’d even make the ask a lottery protected 1st. Sure, it’s outrageous, but the Clippers have all the leverage. Worst case, Boston says no and you just roll into the season as you intended anyway.
I like the way you think. However, You can’t trade a coach for future player considerations.
You can however trade them.
We shall see how the Celtics over come these bad hits. if Robert Willams can’t be Robert Williams they are not winning the NBA finals.
Good point since TimeLord makes Celtics defense special and adds something to Celtics offense no one else can or does. Go Celts!
Wow – already undermining Mazzulla before training camp even starts. Awful move.
They have to fill Mazzulla’s old position. They’re not just going to leave an assistant spot open. Larranaga is both experienced and a familiar face. It makes sense.
It depends on Mazzulla’s point of view. Considering Larranga might be a rival for the HC spot after the season, it’s hard to automatically say he’s feeling good about this.
Well, you automatically said he was feeling bad because he is being “undermined”
They are short an assistant coach. They’re trying to hire an assistant coach. They want to hire one they like and trust. Doesn’t sound “awful” to me.
@ Curtisrowe
Human nature says if Mazzula didn’t ask for him to get added that he could see it as Stevens lacking confidence in him as the interim coach (and hiring competition).
Looks like most Celtics fans think it’s a positive.
chances are they ran it by Mazzula first. as others have said they are short on assistants and likely wanted one that both the front office and Mazzula trusted as he worked with Laranaga before
I get your point, but it obviously makes the coaching staff stronger. That’s a good thing.
Mazzulla would rather have Jay there next to him rather than anyone else – especially instead of some former head coach ready to inherit the job.
The question is… Why would Jay do it, without a bunch of promises beyond this season? Clearly, there’s many if he comes back.
You think Mazzulla suggested this move? I guess the Clippers OKed it, I wonder if Larranga is homesick for Boston?
he worked with Laranaga before so I don’t think he’d have any problem with it
Leggo
Why doesn’t Stevens take over being the head coach?
‘Cause he sucks, right?
He’s trash he doesn’t belong in the nba
Celts have ticked off so many women with this fiasco that they’ll be rolling out the red carpet for Becky Hammon next Spring.
Dumpster fire!!!
So Jay said no thanks. Is Vogel next up?
