Collin Sexton considers himself 100% healthy heading into his first season with the Jazz, Joe Coles of the Deseret News writes.
Sexton agreed to a four-year contract worth $71MM while getting dealt to Utah in the Donovan Mitchell blockbuster trade with the Cavaliers.
Sexton, 23, missed all but 11 games in 2021/22 due to torn meniscus in his left knee, which required surgery. The previous season, he averaged 24.3 PPG and 4.4 APG on .475/.371/.815 shooting in 60 games (35.3 MPG).
Sexton was in limbo as a restricted free agent much of the summer, as negotiations between his reps and the Cavaliers dragged on. He tried not to get frustrated by the situation.
“I just know my agent was pretty much just telling me just to stay patient and everything will work out now we be playing whether it was in Cleveland or another team, I will be wearing an NBA jersey,” he said. “So that was pretty much my mindset. I just wanted to just continue to work on the things that I needed to improve on and I let the rest take care of itself.”
Sexton spoke to new coach Will Hardy this week and was excited about his positive energy.
“He’s understanding that we’re going to be young, but he also understands like it’s going to be fun and I can’t wait to just be coached by him just because his energy and how he talks to us and how he’s so uplifted and how he has high spirits each and every day,” Sexton said. “That rubs off on everybody in the building as well.”
Collin will do well in Utah
I think so too. Wouldn’t be shocked to see him post an efficient 25 ppg.
@KnicksFanCavsFan i’d say closer to about 21 ppg. But who knows, he will have more an opportunity, I wouldnt be overly shocked if he dropped 30 ppg
Collin scored big in the Mitchell trade. Fresh contract and a Fresh rebuild to pile up points. This is what he does best! One thing we know for certain with Collin in Utah, wins will not happen. You don’t get wins with Sexton.
Solid addition for Ainge. He ain’t looking for wins right now. Just give the fans a couple of names while you get your real players.
Take Donovan Mitchell off of last year’s Utah team and insert Sexton ….. Utah doesn’t even make the Playoffs!
@very
such a stupid conclusion. his responsibility as a SG is to score and he does so efficiently. he even had a career high of 4.4 assists per game his last full season playing alongside Garland the PG. If a score can score 20+ shooting above 47/37/82 and still passes the ball then he’s an offensive asset. he might need help on defense but show me some reason you feel a team can’t win with a guy like that and then we can have an intelligent conversation.
How many wins did that Cleveland team have with all that “efficient” scoring????
Bad teams don’t even get maximum effort from opponents. Let Collin get his 25 and we still go home with an “easy” 15 point win. Everybody healthy. Everybody rested.
Mitchell got the top defender of the opponent EVERY night. Double and Triple teams. This includes the top defender on the top teams in the league because Utah was #1 seed 2 years ago, and considered some type of a contender.
Their is a BIG difference in points scored by Sexton, and points scored by Mitchell. Mitchell’s efforts produced a whole lot of wins!
Lakers should demand young players from Jazz for Westbrook and picks
Sexton, Lauri and salary
If not, trade Westbrook to Pacers
GL with that
What about Conley 22m, Bogdanovic 19m, Clarkson 13m, Gay 5m, Whiteside 2m and two 2nd rd picks for Westbrook 48m, Nunn 5m, Lonnie walker 5m, Gabriel 2m, Christie 1m,and two 1st rd picks
Not bad. Keep in mind, the Jazz need to consolidate a couple players to get from 17 guaranteed contracts to 15.
Although, they could waive/buyout a couple end of bench guys and re-sign to G-League contracts. I know they can only convert Exhibit 10 contracts to 2-way contracts and 2-way to regular contracts. Plus, 2-way contracts are only available for players with less than 3? years NBA experience. Might be 2 years.
I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Sexton cannot be traded for 3-6 months. Jazz aren’t gonna trade young talent for MORE picks when they can just get them from their other vets
They may trade Markkanen but they won’t trade Sexton for a while.
I agree. Don’t know if it will work but it’s best case scenario.
Clarkson, Sexton, Markkanan for Westbrook and 2 picks is a good deal.
Conley, Markkanan and Vando
Conley, Beasley, Bojan
Really any combination would work for the Lakers.
These proposals are so ridiculous sometimes I wonder if laker fans are just trolling. You aren’t getting 3 solid players for Westbrook and 2 picks, you have to give up one pick just to get rid of Westbrook.
@QB1:
And none would work for the Jazz. Ainge won’t trade for Westbrook.
I think Danny is pretty horny for LAL 27 & 29 picks. Lebron and AD will be long gone by then, no draft capital to speak of leading up to then. No young players on the roster. It’s likely to be a wasteland. If he can get them unprotected, he’d trade and waive Westbrook yesterday.
Desperation is about right coming from the Lakers. Although, anyone in the Jazz/Cavs trade cannot be traded for awhile. Plus, I doubt the Jazz would send Sexton nor LM in any trade this season.
The Jazz are in accumulation mode: 1st round picks and young players. Capspace is secondary but usually a byproduct of having a roster full of young players.
The young players for Jazz are going nowhere. If the Jazz rake Westbrook that in itself helps Fakers, the best they can do is maybe get Bogan and/or Conley.
You don’t trade future first round picks for those 39 years old guys
Why?
Picks are 19 years old
You don’t trade known assets for maybe a good player in 6 years. Lakers are pretty much getting only an upgrade this season as that’s only how long Westbrooks contract will last as well.
A bit overdramatic, don’t you think? Bojan is 33 and still pretty much in his prime. Conley is 34 and still very productive on both sides of the ball. Ask Trey Young how good his defense is. Ask the Clippers how dangerous he is. The only question is do they fit their needs?
Yeah bc the Lakers are in a position to demand…
The jazz will beat the Lakers strait up this year if they start sexton Clarkson bogdonovich mez and azabuke. This is a young man’s game and the Lakers are dinosaurs. Go jazz plus our bench is DEEP
Certainly starting to look that way, right? The Jazz still could go in lots of directions. Ainge’s PC answers kinda sounded like 2023 might be when they still try to compete.
Ainge said he thought the 2024 draft might be even better than 2023. That would give the Jazz enough time to trade all the veterans plus any other players that don’t fit their vision for the future.
If you want to see Sexton in action, post injury, then there’s some YouTube workout videos, a pickup game with Whiteside, etc. Plus, him competing in the Miami Pro League.
