SEPTEMBER 25: Utah has officially signed Zeller, the team announced in a press release.
SEPTEMBER 20: The Jazz will sign Cody Zeller to a training camp deal, according to Tony Jones and Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).
Zeller, 29, began his NBA career in 2013 with Charlotte and remained with the Hornets through the 2020/21 season. He signed a one-year, minimum-salary contract with the Trail Blazers last season and appeared in 27 games off the bench before suffering right patellar avulsion fracture.
He was waived just before the trade deadline as Portland cleared roster space in the CJ McCollum trade with New Orleans.
Zeller has averaged 8.5 PPG and 6.0 RPG in 22.2 MPG through 494 NBA games.
With 17 guaranteed contracts already on the books, plus one two-way contract and three reported Exhibit 10 deals, the Jazz will need to make more roster moves prior to the opening of camp.
A best-case scenario will be for Zeller to earn a roster spot as a backup big man on the rebuilding club.
Brad Stevens????? Hello???? Brad Stevens????
Cody Zeller will try to make the team but it’s going to be hard for him. At this stage of his career he might can be a team third Center. It’s crazy when I look back at his career. He’s attached to just another terrible player Michael Jordan has drafted smh. Michael Jordan is the greatest player ever and the worst owner ever. Phil Jackson is the greatest Head Coach and the worst Vice President of Basketball Operations ever. Just think what Michael Jordan has done.
2001 Draft Kwame Brown 1st could’ve took Pau Gasol.
2011 Draft Kemba Walker 9th could’ve took Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard, or Jimmy Butler.
2012 Draft Michael Kidd-Gilchrest 2nd could’ve took Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard.
2013 Draft Cody Zeller 4th could’ve took C.J. McCollum Giannis Antetokounmpo or Rudy Gobert.
2014 Draft Noah Vonleh 9th could’ve took Zach LaVine Clint Capela or Nikola Jokic.
2015 Draft Frank Kaminsky 9th could’ve took Myles Turner or Devin Booker.
2016 Draft Malachi Richardson and later trade him for Marco Belinelli smh lol. Could’ve took Pascal Siakam Dejounte Murray or Malcolm Brogdon.
2017 Draft Malik Monk 11th could’ve took Donovan Mitchell, Bam Adebayo, John Collins, OG Anunoby, or Josh Hart.
2018 Draft Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and trade him back one pick to the Los Angeles Clippers for Miles Bridges. So I would say he got this one right because they both good players.
I’m going to say they got it right in 2019 and 2020 and 2021 looks suspect but it’s too early to judge but we have seen terrible picks after terrible picks.
That IS a bad resume as an owner… is he worse than Sarver and Sterling overall?
As far as I know Jordan never turned goats loose in his GMs office and even if one looks past the fact that Sterling is a racist scumbag I think most would agree that the Clippers were horrible under Sterling’s regime. They lost 50 or more games in 30 out of 33 seasons.
I would not ding him for Kemba Walker. Walker was a stud in college and played very well for Charlotte. And at the end of the day, they got Rozier for him. It was a good choice.
Agree with the rest, though. That drafting resume… woof.
Lots of teams missed out on those guys buddy. If you’re gonna sit here and say MJ is a bad owner, that is fine. But don’t spew nonsense out trying to make your point. If being a bad owner is earned because you missed on Giannis then boy do I have some news for you.
Exactly
Sac kings have been dog s since MJ was still a player
Watch out! Jazz are on a signing spree! This year’s champs! While my pitiful Rockets will be sitting at home waiting for the next draft pick to come in
Can’t believe this stiff was the #4 pick. Another fine draft for Jordan & Co. Dude wasn’t even good in college
Wasn’t good in college. Lol. Sorry, I shouldn’t laugh. Maybe you suffer from some kind of mental illness or something.
Really Zeller was a good pick. You look at the 2o13 draft as a whole Zeller stands out as a guy you can at least play
Zeller was a huge bust but the pick at the time was not a bad one, just a bit of a reach. Most had him in the 7-11 range of picks if you look at old mock drafts. He was good in college, though.
Very good in college. 2013 is just so odd
Lol, literally! All these vet signings are smart, but they just don’t have the room as the roster stands currently. Maybe if they like him they could sign him as an assistant coach? He could then still help the team in practices and training. Stranger things have happened.
