The Knicks still have two projected openings on their 15-man regular season roster, and several former All-Stars who have experience playing in New York are still available on the free agent market. Former Nets big men Blake Griffin and LaMarcus Aldridge and ex-Knicks star Carmelo Anthony are among the notable names who remain unsigned.
However, according to Marc Berman of The New York Post, the Knicks don’t currently view Griffin, Aldridge, or Anthony as a great fit for their roster. If the team makes a trade or two, it’s possible that stance could change, but for now it seems unlikely that any of those veterans will sign with New York, Berman writes.
Here’s more on the Knicks:
- In a separate subscriber-only story in The New York Post, Berman cites a source who says free agent center Dwight Howard would love to play for the Knicks. New York’s depth chart at center already features Mitchell Robinson, Isaiah Hartenstein, and Jericho Sims, so it’s unclear if the team would reciprocate that interest.
- The Knicks’ Donovan Mitchell trade talks with Utah shone a light on a front office hierarchy that many league sources have described as confusing, according to Berman. President of basketball operations Leon Rose, advisor Gersson Rosas, head coach Tom Thibodeau, senior executive William Wesley, general manager Scott Perry, and strategist Brock Aller all have a say in basketball decisions, making it challenging for the front office to come to a consensus, Berman explains.
- Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News and Michael Scotto of HoopsHype explored several Knicks-related topics in the latest episode of the HoopsHype podcast, including the Mitchell trade negotiations — Bondy claims the Knicks and Jazz were “at the two-yard line” before those discussions fell apart. Bondy and Scotto also discussed Cam Reddish‘s status, Thibodeau’s future, and which star the Knicks might target next, among other issues.
It seems like there would only be an issue regarding the knicks front office hierarchy if Leon Rise did not have the final say and there’s no indication that he doesn’t. Seems to me it’d fine to have lots of input and to delegate to different people, as long as Leon ultimately is in charge of making the finals calls. There’s been zero mention up to this point that anyone else actually makes final decisions.
Yawn
Melo to Brooklyn
Cam should be starting in NY this season. Brunson/Cam/RJ/Randle/Robinson w/ Rose/IQ/Grimes/Fournier/Obi/Hartenstein off bench… I’d look into trading Fournier for Conley too
Conley isn’t an upgrade over Brunson, or Rose. Debatable over whether he’d be better than Quickley or McBride at this point. He can’t play D and isn’t an efficient offensive player anymore. Not what the Knicks need.
He’s not an upgrade, he’s just a different type of guard. He’s more of the type of pg this team needs tbh. Brunson/Rose/IQ are guys that are natural scorers. Knicks need a steadying vet to be more of a table setter that keeps guys happy & prioritizes gettin the forwards the ball in their sweet spots. Knicks need someone who makes the game easier for their scorers. Now that I think of it, what is Rondo up to? He’d be the perfect guy for them. As far as Conley obv you’re talking crazy smh he’s clearly still very efficient offensively. He shot over 40% from trey & had a PER over 17 & this was in a bad yr. He’s also still a very good defender at pg, def better than Rose or IQ
Why would we want any part of Conley. McBride and Q are both better than him right now. Brunson is a table setter. That’s why he’s here. But nothing works if Randle keeps the drama going.
Cam has a reputation for not really wanting it. It’s why Thibs doesn’t want him. You really need to get more informed. You talk out your are too much. Especially with my team.
Cam will be first guy traded. Guy has talent. Hope he gets it before it’s too late. Probably needs a small market.
Actually, he plays D just fine. Mitchell was the matador on defense. Conley is a very smart basketball player. Just watch him play defense on Trey Young if you don’t believe me.
As for Brunson, he only averaged 4.8 assists. That’s very close to Donovan’s APG. You want a guy that’s closer to 7-8+.
The Knucks Brodie Van Rose signed his son’s client.Hes probably there until Dolan sells the team which doesn’t look.likely to happen anytime soon. Don’t think Brodie Van Rose will fire Thibs either since he’s a crony so this is what it is the silent mediocrity rules.
Knicks’ FO has always been bloated, but there’s nothing confusing about the current Knicks FO hierarchy. Rose makes the calls. For instance, it was he who decided early on that the FO wouldn’t waste time communicating with Berman and his ilk.
Yeah, those “former all stars” are certainly not fits for our roster or locker room. In any event, they shouldn’t sign anyone else to a guaranteed contract until after preseason camp, if then. They have plenty of depth, including a pair of 2 way guys who can contribute. Not sure what trade possibilities are out there, as most teams are pretty set for the season at this point.
Knicks had too much in bank and tried their best to give the less possible … Great FO job
This is actually good reading about Knicks. For those who want knowledge or care. Do t agree with all of it. But it makes some good points.

It’s a shame that so much depends on a drama Queen. But I don’t see any forward success with last yrs Randle. I would trade him as soon as he starts playing well. NY is not a place for him. We can not have one player ruin our rebuild. Let Obi1 start. Time to move on from Randle, please.
Anything to shed negativity and get more readers. Berman and the media will just milk this story till Knicks find another star. This is life with the Knicks. Always about the negative and the failures. It’s year three of the rebuild. And they already want to blow it up. Just the same noise ………

Why can’t Cavs just be given their due. For a great move. Knicks shouldn’t overpay just cause the media wants a big story. We have all our picks and assets. We are in great position to make a move. Why are we going to cry over DM. We wish you the best DM. Cavs have a good young team to build on. Good for them …….. NY NY
Judging from what they showed last year I’m not sure Griffin or Aldridge make sense on any roster, but Melo kind of makes some sense in NY to me.
He still plays no defense, but he’s made himself into a legit stretch 4 and can still iso against 2nd units. While I don’t think this roster necessarily NEEDS another vet clogging the rotation, between Randle, Obi, Robinson, Hartenstein … there’s literally no front court spacing unless you want RJ at the 4 (and even his shot is streaky at this point).
If the goal is to create some lineups where, you know, Brunson and RJ can actually create with spacing, then having Melo as an option wouldn’t be the worst thing.
