The Mavericks and Knicks are among the teams with interest in Jazz veteran Bojan Bogdanovic, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM (Twitter link), who states that Utah is looking for draft picks and players on expiring contracts in return.
In addition to Dallas and New York, Gambadoro reports that the Lakers and Suns remain interested in the sharpshooting forward, but he notes that the Jazz might not have as much interest in Phoenix’s first-round picks because they are expected to be one of the top teams once again in 2022/23 after having the NBA’s best record last season (64-18).
The Lakers’ interest in Bogdanovic has been well-documented, and Gambadoro reported a week ago that the Suns inquired about his services as well. Bogdanovic, who is on a $19.55MM expiring contract, is a talented scorer and shooter, averaging 18.3 PPG and 4.1 RPG on .461/.403/.860 shooting over the past four seasons. He’s currently competing in EuroBasket action with the Croatian national team.
If the Jazz are looking for expiring deals, the Mavs don’t have a clean one-for-one fit for salary-matching purposes. Reaching an extension agreement with Maxi Kleber rules him out, and it’s highly unlikely that they’d consider moving Christian Wood after just acquiring him in June.
That only leaves Dwight Powell‘s $11MM expiring deal, plus former first-rounder Josh Green and Frank Ntilikina to match salaries. Green has a team option for $4.77MM in ’23/24.
The Knicks could pull it off a little easier, at least in theory, by trading Derrick Rose‘s $14.5MM pseudo-expiring contract (team option in ’23/24) plus someone like Cam Reddish, who will make $5.95MM in the final season of his rookie deal.
As Gambadoro mentioned, either package would have to include draft picks to land the highly-coveted forward.
The Jazz are in the midst of a full-fledged rebuild after trading their two best players, three-time All-Stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, plus veterans Royce O’Neale and Patrick Beverley. They’ve targeted first-round picks and/or young players in all four deals.
The Knicks aren’t going to sniff the playoffs with or without Bojan…
Prob not without him, but with him they could def make playoffs. The Knicks issue is gonna be pg play tho. They def should’ve signed Tyus Jones. Brunson is more of a scorer. Knicks needed a table setter. Bojan wouldn’t solve their biggest problem but he’d def come in handy, esp as a shooter. He’d help LAL even more tbh
Would def improve the spacing for the second unit quite a bit. There’s no real avenue to getting RJ/Fournier/Bogi all on the floor at the same time. I’m assuming it’s Evan who moves to the second unit with Grimes & Quick.
Completely agree about Brunson. He’s an efficient catch & shoot, operate in space, scorer. I’m not seeing what everyone else is with a starting unit of non-shooting ball stoppers + Evan.
Randle & RJ (& Fournier & Rose to a lesser extent) are all guys that like to be the lead ballhandler & decision maker. Apparently their offense is gonna continue to feature alot of that. Obv Randle is more than capable of leading teams to Ws in that role & so is Brunson tbh. But Tyus just fit way better. He’s more natural as a distributor & keeping guys happy & fed. Brunson isn’t quite that same type of pg tho he obv has his strengths as well. The pieces just don’t fit very well. Should be fun to watch Knicks fans struggle to understand why their team sucks during the season tho lol it was hilarious last season. And most still don’t understand how impactful losing Elfrid Payton was
He got a good pay increase from the Grizzlies. I’m guessing the Knicks didn’t want to get even shorter at PG.
Yes, big pass for Bojan for the Knicks.
LOL the Knicks. Maybe Danny can get Cam Reddish/Obi Toppin and a couple 1st round picks from the Bricks after all
Right, they wouldn’t trade any of that for several years of Donovan Mitchell, yet they will for one year of Bogdanovic? Please tell me what else happens in this obsessed and weird fantasy of yours?
It’s called a joke, maybe grow some new brain cells and learn to take one. Also FWIW, the Knicks were willing to trade those guys for DM, Grimes and draft compensation was the sticking point.
@Theone23- It’s not a very funny joke though. If you we’re a Knicks fan, you wouldn’t find it amusing at all. No match for Bojan for the Knicks. Pass.
FWIW at this point multiple sources have come out and suggested the Knicks made an offer w/ 3 unprotected picks + Barret *or* Grimes early on, which would have been superior to Cleveland’s picks, given the historical ineptitude of the Knicks you’re so apt at pointing out
Maybe true maybe not — but Ainge had a history in Boston of demanding so much from teams he eventually got less, so I personally find it plausible that he demanded the house from NY and then ultimately had a settle for a (still good) lesser offer from the Cavs
Bojan & Mike Conley + Beasley or Clarkson for Westbrook, Nunn and 2 firsts? Money works, not sure that moves the needle enough for LA
No way that is enough for Jazz. You’re giving up 3 strong pieces for Westbrook’s expiring, Nunn who is an unknown right now after last season and 2 meh 1st’s? I don’t see it.
Westbrook and Nunn have negative value, its a salary dump. Those picks are 5 & 7 years off. Lebron AD etc will be long gone… do you trust LA to rebuild that fast? They sucked for 6 seasons before Lebron
Kendrick Nunn is the one “unknown” that could save the Lakers season. He was terrific with the Miami Heat. Very like Tyler Herro with his production. The slow recovery from the injury is very concerning. However, if he comes back healthy. Very much a valuable “X” factor for the Lakers.
Tim Hardaway Jr + 1st for Bojan Bogdanovic? Not too likely but could happen
As a long time Jazz fan, it breaks my heart to see them break apart a really good basketball team. I will try to adjust to the new team…not sure I can adjust to losing.
@Donald yeah it’s probably gonna suck for a while but just try to look towards the future. You can always root for a playoff team to win to keep rooting for a good team (I suggest the mavs but i’d doubt you’d do that as we kinda sent your team into this rebuild lol) And that way you can still have some excitement as well as being a fan of a rebuilding team. But just root for the future and you’ll be good at some point soon
The Jazz were highly likely to do a rebuild this Summer regardless of who they lost to. They weren’t going to go far. The team was too chaotic. It did likely convince them to part with Donovan as he looked disinterested and not the same.
I’m with you as I really liked Mitchell and Gobert but I’m looking forward a proper rebuild. The team will suck for a couple years but as a fan I’m excited to see what all these picks bring us. If they scout properly and draft well in 3-4 seasons they could be in a position to do what Cleveland did this off season.
What matters is playing the game. Sexton will be all for you.
Comical. That there are people clueless enough to believe the NYK are interested in BB. They must be out there though, or notions like this wouldn’t be floated.
Ah cool you got some insider knowledge, let’s hear it!
He has just as much “insider” knowledge as John Gambordano or whatever.
I kinda doubted the insider knowledge of Gambadoro when he said the Cavs we’re interested in Mitchell, then a week later Mitchell is now the starting SG for the Cavs.
He is just reading articles like everybody on this board and commenting. No where does he say anything about “sources” telling him a thing. Do you think Utah might be more interested in 2023 1st round pick from a team expected to have a worse record than Phoenix? He is assuming the obvious like everybody else.
Cleveland’s interest in Donovan Mitchell was well chronicled that they were in. He didn’t break the story. They were in. They pulled out. Got back in when Knicks signed Barrett.
@Very Barry Gambo is very plugged in and his track record proves that. Might want to research before posting.
His insider knowledge is a functional brain, something that’s becoming rarer here by the day it seems
Agreed! If Knicks were interested ….. they ain’t getting him now anyway after the Mitchell fiasco. Oh wait … Don’t the Knicks have an “advisor” who is a buddy with the Utah GM??? Shouldn’t this have already gotten the deal done??? If not, why was he the lead on the Mitchell trade discussions??? Comedy!
Playoffs?
Knicks need to find a way to win more games than Cavs
I like BB, but presuming good health, Rose is as valuable to the Knicks as he would be. Sending a 1st and more for a rental of a likely bench player in another building year would be counterproductive in my opinion.
What’s the Knicks actual plan after this? Free up cap space? For who? Find a trade for a player you covet and do the deal or just build via draft.
What does Bojan do for this team on an expiring deal if you’re giving a 1st and maybe more assets to dump Fournier?
Knicks plan was Jalen Brunson. Not sure why he was there overwhelming top target that they zeroed in on him so hard, but that was the plan.
The plan seems to be: put the hoard of picks on ice until the next star requests out, then make another stab at it
Is it a good plan? I think it’s not bad probabilistically — stars are demanding out at high rates and NY has location and assets.
The issue is operational to me — they really need to put an emphasis on developing the young guys they have ASAP. No one is excited about teaming up with Julius Randle Derrick Rose and Evan Fournier.
IQ, Grimes, and Toppin need to see serious time this year and either sink or swim. Barrett needs to be a more focal point of the offense and also sink or swim. If these young dudes stink then it is what it is, but if they’re actually good NY’s chances of landing that disgruntled star go up in a major way
Cam Reddish was also supposed to be a good prospect too and they’ve wasted a 1st trading for him. Thibs has to go, you can’t put Thibs in charge of a developmental team. He has no clue how to develop players. Honestly they’d be better with a Brett Brown type. He managed to turn some guys into solid pros. Find that guy and give him a shot instead.
I agree — Thibs is a good coach, just not for this roster
Dwight Powell, Frank Ntilikina and a second round pick for Bojan
Get it done Mavs.
Doncic Hardaway Finney-Smith Wood McGee
Dinwiddie Bullock Bojan Kleber
Pinson Hardy Green Bertans
McGee provides the only real traditional centre but they will play a lot of small ball with Wood at the 5 and Kleber also having some minutes there too. Which means there will be a lot of minutes for the bench which has good talent on it.
If you get any injuries then expect Hardy to get a good run he’s going to be a beast.
The only issue with this team is Davis Bertans. Would be great to flip him but can’t see that happening without giving up some assets
Multiple teams are willing to trade for Bogie and the Jazz will settle for Dallas’ 2nd Rd pick and filler?
They want expiring contracts and or picks.
Dallas gives them an scoring contract and pick and a young player
Lakers can realistically only offer Russ and a first and take back another player and they seem hesitant to do that. Suns have so far been hesitant also.
Bojan makes a ton of sense in Dallas fit wise but IDK how many picks I’m giving up for an expiring contract
NY makes even less sense. Is he a long term fit in NY? Is NY a piece away? I’d love him on the roster but when the cost is going to be at least a 1st it’s not worth it
We don’t need Bojan. Freak Danny and the Utes. Why would we want a 33yr old FA to be. We Already have a shooter. Need to use Fournier right.
Nothing good is going to happen. Until Randle is moved. We can’t have a season depend on the feelings of a drama Queen. He’s had his shot here. He blew it so he has to go.
Grimes is ready to be a part of this rotation. Obi1 is ready to take over PF. Time to move forward. Brunson and Obi will make a great pairing. Knicks have the assets to make a good move. But first we right the ship by moving the Drama Queen.
RJ and Obi two high draft picks. Will reach new heights with Brunson running the point. Love Rose but McBride and Quickley are ready to backup Brunson. Rose and expiring contract. Should be coveted by a contender or playoff team. Knicks have options. We do t need Bojan ……
I am coming around on Knickerbocker Al’s thinking here. Especially if Thibs is coaching NY long term. Brunson, RJ, Obi, Grimes and Mitchell Robinson is a nice core. Still have haul of picks and Quickly. Need to totally buy into being a physical, defensive team and rally around Thibs like the Bulls did with Thibs and Jimmy Butler. Defense wins games and titles in this league.
One deal away from adding a difference-maker that changes the outlook of the team to contender.
Bojan makes no sense!
This would be a huge add for the Knicks
There will be no expiring contracts traded before the deadline. A lot more than the mostly chicken scratching to keep one’s busy with mostly non sensiacle trade scenarios will be avaliable then.
