Derrick Favors‘ future with the Thunder is very much up in the air heading into training camp, according to Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman.
Oklahoma City is three standard contracts over the limit but Favors’ expiring deal may be the most compelling reason he’ll make the 15-man roster. His $10,183,800 cap hit could prove useful in a trade.
He’s still a serviceable center and positive influence in the locker room as well, two other compelling reasons to keep him around, Mussatto adds.
We have more from the Northwest Division:
- While some people wonder how Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert will fit together, the Timberwolves’ biggest issues will likely be a lack of knockdown shooters and lead ball-handlers, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic writes. Minnesota is actually quite deep, despite all the bodies the team swapped to acquire Gobert, and Krawczynski breaks down each position in this in-depth piece.
- The Jazz are undergoing an extensive rebuild and new head coach Will Hardy will have to earn the confidence of his players to get through it, Sarah Todd of the Deseret News writes. The front office showed its confidence in Hardy by giving him a five-year contract, knowing developmental wins will be more important than actual victories.
- While Trail Blazers’ star Damian Lillard had already made tens of millions of dollars playing basketball, the generational wealth he’ll accumulate with the two-year, super-max extension he signed this summer was humbling, he told Marc J. Spears of Andscape.com. “Me and [my wife] talked about it. It’s a big deal. When I talked to [agent Aaron Goodwin] and everybody I talked to about it, it was a big deal. I was like, ‘What am I supposed to do? Post something on Instagram saying something crazy?’ I don’t know what I was supposed to do. It was a big deal.”
So this is probably a stupid idea, but I was wondering… would the Thunder be interested in Bazley, Muscala, and Favors being traded for Duncan Robinson and Omer Yurtseven? Even if you wanted to include a pick it wouldn’t really matter to me.
MIAMI HEAT:
PG: Kyle Lowry, Tyler Herro, Gabe Vincent, Marcus Garrett
SG: Max Strus, Victor Oladipo, Haywood Highsmith,
SF: Jimmy Butler, Caleb Martin, Nikola Jovic,
PF: Darius Bazley, Dewayne Dedmon, Udonis Haslem, Darius Days
C: Bam Adebayo, Derrick Favors, Mike Muscala,
OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER:
PG: Josh Giddey, Tre Mann, Ty Jerome, Lindy Waters III
SG: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Theo Maledon, Vit Krejci
SF: Luguentz Dort, Kenrich Williams, Aaron Wiggins, Eugene Omoruyi
PF: Duncan Robinson, Aleksej Pokusevski, Ousmane Dieng,
C: Chet Holmgren, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Jaylin Williams, Omer Yurtseven
I’d say that this would help both teams tbh, and if there was a way to get Kenrich Williams to the Heat too, that would be interesting as well. Probably have to swap in Kenrich for Vincent, but I would for sure do that if I was the Heat.
Duncan Robinson Power forward hahahaha
Why would the Thunder trade Bazley for these scrubs? Smh
You came up with a really good trade. You got your GM hat on.
I agree with the article. I have been a vocal critic of Minnesota. No. They do not have any “knockdown” shooters. They have a couple of guys who can score. Don’t know why they think adding Gobert is such a game-changer. The traditional big man in the post is a thing of the past. Perhaps they should have bolstered their shooting. Then have KAT maybe focus on being some type of difference-maker defensively in the post???? Maybe let him know he is getting paid the big bucks to impact BOTH ends of the floor. Two-way superstars win titles. One-way offensive guys get stats and big $$$.
I honestly think Rudy Gobert is going to look great in Minnesota with Karl Anthony-Towns. Rudy Gobert is the best defensive player and Karl Anthony-Towns is the best shooting big man in the NBA. Anthony Edwards is going to be a two way superstar in this league.
I think what is holding them back is D’Angelo Russell. Dude highly overrated. Then he’s a defensive liability.
I think they should’ve put him in the Rudy Gobert trade and kept Patrick Beverley and Malik Beasley.
The Miami Heat are going to play Jimmy Butler at PF. Boston is now going to give Jayson Tatum extensive PF minutes with Robert Williams in doubt. Do you see a theme here??? League is continuing to go smaller.
When teams go “small ball”. Who are Gobert and KAT gonna guard??? KAT gonna guard Jimmy Butler or Tatum???? Yup. Rudy to the bench.
Do you realize how much Minnesota traded away to get Gobert??
How far did Utah get in the playoffs 2 years ago as the #1 seed with Rudy “Defensive Player of the Year” Gobert in the post????
I agree with you on D’Angelo Russell. He is an expensive liability. They traded for him because he is tight with KAT. They didn’t trade him this offseason, because he is tight with KAT. His spot needs to be a 3 and D guy. If D’Lo played defense it might work. He don’t
Edwards and KAT are scorer’s NOT “knockdown” shooters. They need to have Seth Curry type role player shooters. Joe Harris. Remember Steve Kerr, John Paxton with Bulls. Duncan Robinson????
Edwards and KAT ain’t accurate like Steph and Klay.
I love Edwards. I think he is a stud.
Bryn Forbes and Jaylen Nowell are our versions of knockdown shooters. Yea, we could absolutely use a more reliable and higher usage shooter, but those weren’t readily available for us (at least after trading Beas). We made a defensive shift, and we’ll see how it plays out. The capital we traded is alot, but no GM on earth is going to hit gold on even a 2 of the draft picks we traded.
Though I guess it depends on what your version of “hitting gold” is…
What I mean is that it’s not very likely that Ainge or anyone can get the equivalent of Gobert out of the draft picks we traded. Maybe he can find another Mitchell with our picks. Maybe he’ll get multiple guys equaling Gobert (plus Vando and Beas etc), but a team like the Wolves HAS to take that risk. No one like Gobert is coming to Minnesota in FA.
Nobody will hit gold like Rosas/Gupta did in 2020 getting Edwards AND McDaniels in the same draft. Excellent scouting/trading
The reason you take in a haul of draft picks like that is so you have the ability to “overpay” if necessary to acquire player(s) via trade. Utah has no expectation of actually drafting all those picks.
T Wolves traded away picks and received Gobert. The players they traded have already been replaced with players that are very similar.
Did the T wolves improve for the current year? I’d say yes.
Favors is another guy the Bulls could make ample use of if he became available, at 10 mil it would be hard to match but if he gets released they should give him a shot.
Derrick Favors can still be a nice quality backup Center on a championship caliber team.
Damian Lillard have given the Portland Trail Blazers 10 great years! I love what he represents from a loyalty standpoint and as a man. He’s a great teammate and great leader. I would love to see him finish his career as a Portland Trail Blazer. They should compete for a playoff spot out West. It’s just going to be so hard. Their starters are undersized on the wings and it seems like they not understanding that won’t work in the playoffs. Anfernee Simons is better in a 6th man role like Jordan Poole and Tyler Herro because he don’t guard at a high level. Then Jusuf Nurkic is injury prone and not a rim protector. So I definitely don’t think he’s the answer at Center. Josh Hart should be a SG instead of a SF. He’s a very solid player that I would prefer to be in the backcourt with Damian Lillard. Damian Lillard haven’t had a prototypical Shooting Guard next to him since the very beginning of his career. Him and C.J. McCollum was a very good backcourt but not great because not enough defense was being played. I don’t see that changing with Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons. But I really like Damian Lillard Josh Hart and Jerami Grant. Then I really like Chauncey Billups so I’m rooting for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Starters
SF Josh Hart
PF Jerami Grant
C Jusuf Nurkic
SG Anfernee Simons
PG Damian Lillard
Bench
SG Gary Payton II
SF Nassir Little
PF Justise Winslow
C Drew Eubanks
SG Shaedon Sharpe
I am pretty sure that I can take me, and grab 4 guys off this board, and score 100+ points on that Portland starting lineup. Yikes! Not one guy who even tries to play defense.
I’d rejig your lineups a little. Lillard, Hart, Little, Grant and Nurk. Let Simons lead the second unit as that unit looks like it’ll struggle to orchestrate offense and score.
Bryn Forbes has really shot the ball well over his young career.
