SEPTEMBER 26, 9:00pm: The Jazz and Pistons both issued press releases on Monday evening confirming the trade, which signals that all the required physicals have been completed.
As previously reported, Utah received $1,752,638 in cash along with Olynyk and Lee, which is the exact amount of Lee’s 2022/23 salary.
SEPTEMBER 22, 5:00pm: The trade is official, according to NBA.com’s transaction log. In addition to Olynyk and Lee, the Jazz acquired cash in the deal, per RealGM’s transaction log.
SEPTEMBER 22, 8:39am: The Pistons and Jazz are finalizing a trade that will send forward Bojan Bogdanovic to Detroit, sources tell Shams Charania and James L. Edwards III of The Athletic (Twitter links). According to Charania and Edwards, Utah will receive big man Kelly Olynyk and guard Saben Lee in the deal.
Bogdanovic is set to earn $19.55MM in the final year of his contract after averaging 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game in 69 appearances (30.9 MPG) for the Jazz in 2021/22. A strong frontcourt scorer and shooter, Bogdanovic has made his 39.2% of his career three-point attempts, including 40.3% over the last five seasons.
With the Jazz in the process of tearing down their roster, Bogdanovic was widely viewed as a strong candidate to be moved before the start of the season. On Wednesday, Andy Larsen of The Salt Lake Tribune cited a source close to Bogdanovic who said the forward expected to be traded soon.
Still, while a trade had been anticipated, Bogdanovic’s destination comes as a surprise. Teams like the Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, and Knicks had been cited as possible suitors for the 33-year-old, but it will be the retooling Pistons who land him. Bogdanovic’s ability to stretch the floor and hit outside shots should help create more room in the paint and play-making opportunities for Detroit’s dynamic young guards, Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey.
The Pistons will take advantage of their leftover cap room in acquiring Bogdanovic, sending out only Olynyk ($12.8MM) and Lee ($1.75MM) in the deal. The move will also help clear a roster logjam in Detroit — the club had 17 players on fully guaranteed salaries, but will have just 16 after completing the trade for Bogdanovic. Buyout candidate Kemba Walker is expected to be the odd man out.
As for the Jazz, they’re trading yet another productive veteran after having already found takers this offseason for Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, and Royce O’Neale. It appears they won’t continue to add to their collection of future draft assets in the Bogdanovic swap, but they’ll add a much-needed center in Olynyk to their roster, will take a shot on the 23-year-old Lee, and will create some additional breathing room below the luxury tax line.
As Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype observes (via Twitter), the trade should move Utah from about $2MM below the luxury tax threshold to $7MM below the tax line. The team also should create a trade exception worth about $6.75MM in the deal.
While they’ll reduce this year’s team salary, the Jazz will now be on the hook for Olynyk’s $3MM partial guarantee in 2023/24. They’d owe the big man that $3MM, instead of his full $12.2MM salary, if they waive him before next year’s free agent period. Lee, meanwhile, has a $1.9MM team option for ’23/24.
The Jazz will now have 18 players on guaranteed contracts, so they’ll have to trade or release three players before opening night to get their roster down to 15.
Did not expect this….
Why do the pistons want him? I feel like he’s more of a player a playoff team would want.
They think if things break right they can get into the play-in.
Nah you go for the #1 this year, then compete
You need good vets to lead the young players. Can’t have all kids or you end up like Sacramento. They didn’t give up anything for him.
They can still flip him if things don’t break right. It’s nice to see them putting in an effort to field a competitive team.
I love the move for the Detroit Pistons!!! It comes as a surprise. It gets them veteran leadership and a top 15 shooter in the NBA. He’s going to space the floor beautifully for the Detroit Pistons. Then it lets me know the Detroit Pistons are confident in their core and ready to start building. They know how special Cade Cunningham is and want him playing competitive ball instead of meaningless games. Then they had a great draft by getting Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren.
Starters
SF Saddiq Bey
PF Bojan Bogdanovic
C Isaiah Stewart
SG Jaden Ivey
PG Cade Cunningham
Bench
PF Marvin Bagley III
SG Alec Burks
PG Killian Hayes
SF Isaiah Livers
C Nerlens Noel
SG Hamidou Diallo
PG Cory Joseph
SF Rodney McGruder
PF Kevin Knox
C Jalen Duren
They going to sit Jalen Duren down in the G League his rookie season and let him develop his game. Which is a great move because he’s only 18 years old. Then he will be the backup Center next year when Nerlens Noel leave.
I see them eventually buying Kemba Walker out. Kemba Walker will look good going back to the Charlotte Hornets or a team like the Dallas Mavericks.
BogD isn’t going to start at PF…I see him coming off the bench. Need a bit more height and he’ll get abused on the defensive end.
He can hold his own just fine against big guys, as long as they’re not 7 footers. Faster guys maybe not so much going forward.
Just look at how Croatia used him to get an idea of how he’ll do on both ends when used as a primary/secondary scorer, which he clearly still is right now.
When Donovan was out and Indiana’s primary scorer was out, Bogey stepped up in a big way. Scored 48 points against Jokic’s Nuggets and won, as a handpicked example. He’s still in his prime. Just needs the green light and faith.
So you’re saying Bogdanovic, a 18 ppg scorer from a Western Conference playoff teams isn’t going to start on a Eastern Conference rebuilding team? Who your dealer
Maybe they think they can flip him for more at deadline?
No. They need good vets to help the young guys develop. He’s a vet who is actually still good, not some bench guy who’s years passed his prime.
Both of the above.
Roster crunch for Pistons. They were above the limit and didn’t want to eat 9 million to waive Walker so he could join whomever he wanted as a free agent.
The thing is, he’s still on the pistons lol
Yes he is. From what I had seen, they had reached a buyout but Walker never signed it. He had them in a tough spot. If they cut him they would have to pay the full 9 million and he would get that regardless plus anything he could sign for on the market. Why give up $3million to help a young team at the end of your career. Now he can only make $9million max and Detroit can keep him as insurance or get an asset. Smart move by Weaver.
I def thought Utah would be able to get a 1st rd pick for Bojangles, but I REALLY like Saben Lee too & Utah is a perfect situation for him. Bojan & Saddiq are a really forward combo but I’d still lean toward starting Bagley at the I.. as far as Utah, Saben Lee vs Jared Butler vs Leo Bolmaro is gonna be a fascinating pg battle. Saben definitely the better, more natural scorer but all 3 have their positive qualities
More that I look at it, more it feels like Utah is also gonna get some draft capital in this trade too
They have to or it makes zero sense. Kelly is negative value ish
Also clears up some logjam at the Center and point guard positions
Stewart/Noel/bagley/Duren
Boban/Bagley/Livers
Bey/Livers
Ivey/Burks
Cade/Joseph/Walker/mcGruder
Killian Hayes not playing?
Probably not
Hayes will be the backup point
Maybe Ainge can do Boston a solid and arrange a buyout for Olynyk so he can rejoin the Celtics
That contract for Olynyk might be viewed as a bargain. I think the Jazz are doing their absolute best to get in the mix for a top 5 pick.

This Detroit team is actually pretty interesting
Unless Utah is getting at least 1 1st round pick in the deal, it makes no sense for Utah’s perspective. They almost certainly could’ve gotten more for him than a 31 yr old backup big & a non-prospect salary filler.
Dude’s been on the market all summer. No one’s giving up a first round pick for him in a deal. This is the best they could get or else they wouldn’t be doing it.
* Well Gary unless he went to the Lakers, then he should have cost an arm and a leg per about everybody here almost
Surprised they didn’t get more for Bogdanovic. Stingy Danny Ainge usually likes to get good returns for good players. Seems like a giveaway. Good for Pistons tho. He will be a good vet to help the young guys.
He’s supposedly a power forward but neither rebounds nor blocks shots. So he’s a three who’s too slow, but can shoot the 3. They got plenty for him.
Not really. Got a back up center and a random PG…
What were you thinking they could get for him? Not a bad pickup: their new starting center, salary relief, Prospect, roster crunch relief, plus whatever else comes out. Deal not announced yet so more pieces could be going either way.
Remember they got 17 guys for Rudy gobert and it looks like not much is happening with Mike Conley or Jordan Clarkson so somebody had to go as soon as they were able to. They got plenty for him. You’re thinking they should have held out for more? I just don’t think more was available.
A non lottery 1st rounder and some bad salary should’ve been an easy get from a contender. I really don’t understand the aversion to taking on salary that the Jazz have.
He rebounds better than you think. Problem was Gobert tends to get most rebounds so there’s not much left. Lol
An interesting move. I’ll have to take a look at Saben Lee. I’ve always liked Kelly O. He’s a good inside guy. Maybe the Jazz are trying to compete, but slightly younger? Although, I could see the Jazz flipping Kelly. You’d think they’d be getting a draft pick back.
However, Andy Larsen of the SL Tribune says, “Jazz did it to try to open time at the forward position and get an experienced center in Olynyk. They like Olynyk. They feel having him will help the development of the young pieces already on the roster.”
Thumbs up Benboy, good post, I always enjoy reading your takes. But Bojan is NOT a good rebounder at all. 3.6 for his career as a power forward is not great.., and actually last season with Rudy on the floor, he averaged 4.3. So it’s not because Rudy gobbles up all the rebounds. He was a better rebounder with Rudy on the floor then he has been his entire career.
Thank you, sir! I try to stay fair and objective. The Jazz have been a nice outlet for my strategy and competitive itches. =)
As for Bogey, I just meant he’s better than some think. Keep in mind, Myles Turner only averaged 7.1r. Rudy and Capella are always inside and avg double that. Bogey, as a PF/SF is usually outside shooting 3’s and not really counted on to rebound. So 4.3 is solid, considering he’s not the most athletic guy. =)
Regardless, I will miss him on the Jazz. I loved his competitive fire. The Jazz were so much better with him on the team. They had much fewer lulls when Donovan and/or Clarkson would go cold. Bogey was the most consistent. Even though Donovan had more points, it usually took him noticeably more shots to get those extra points.
The only thing he needs to watch is forcing some of those dribble drives when there wasn’t enough room. The Pistons likely won’t need him to do that as much, so it’ll be less of a problem.
Good future fortune, Bogey! You’re a good man and teammate. You deserve it! I’ll be rooting for your success, good sir!
So the Jazz are officially tanking for the lottery, that’s what this trade is about more than anything, moving Bojan to a team that is playing to win, cutting payroll and positioning the Jazz to lose the requisite games to ensure a lottery pick in ’23.
Which is boring because the Jazz had a shot at the playoffs with Bojan. The Jazz are officially boring in ’23 with this trade when they could have been an interesting and competitive team.
The Jax honestly had zero chance of the playoffs with Bojan. It’s the West.
Olynyk goes from battling for minutes on the Pistons to being the starting center for Utah, he must be psyched.
Danny Ainge did Bojan Bogdanovic a solid. Instead of picks he saved the Utah Jazz money. Then Kelly Olynyk can be the starting Center and put up big numbers like he did when he was on the Houston Rockets. So Danny Ainge might be able to flip Kelly Olynyk at the trade deadline. Saban Lee can be a nice young prospect.
I thought the Rookie they got from Minnesota would be starting. Makes sense if they’re going tankapalooza
Bolmaro isn’t ready to start. He’s not really ready to be a reliable beech piece – he’s still half a year from that.
Coming from a Wolves fan that watched almost every game.
Neither is Walker Kessler.
Utah couldn’t get or didn’t want a 1st round pick? Salary releif was more important? Hmmm….
Utah has to start getting some of the veteran guys off of the roster. They are not at a trading advantage again unless an injury occurs, or as the trade deadline approaches. Deadline deals will bring more value at this point. They gotta move veteran bodies.
With Ainge, you probably figure this is only the first chess move. He must have other stuff lined up where that cap space will come in handy.
Salary relief is very good. You need it for team building. The plan in Utah is to have the books clean within two years. Mike Conley Jr. might not be able to be moved. Jordan Clarkson isn’t as hot of a commodity as they think. He’s not a great three point shooter and a defensive liability. Malik Beasley will be able to be moved before him because he’s a very good three point shooter and he’s a average defensive player. Rudy Gay is going to be put in a deal for salary matching purposes. He has no value anymore but that’s my guy so I would like to see him on a playoff or championship caliber team.
Good trade for both teams
Deadline flip?
Looks like they could have aggregated salaries/salary-matched for him, had they wanted to. Just barely.
If tanking is the game, it’s smart to make a move that improves a fellow tanking team.
This improves Detroit, which could improve Utah’s chance at the top pick.
I don’t like this trade. So one starter( PF lol) maybe SF is much older than the rest of the starters with a bunch of twenty year olds. Detroit should now trade him, Stewart, Hayes and Noel to Phoenix for Ayton, Shamet , Craig and jock.
Trade walker too*
Develop Duren to be the PF
As a rockets fan I’m so jealous of the pistons. They know how to rebuild
