Hoops Rumors is taking a closer look at each NBA team’s current roster situation, evaluating which clubs still have some moves to make and which ones seem most prepared for training camp to begin.
This series is meant to provide a snapshot of each team’s roster at this time, so these articles won’t be updated in the coming weeks as more signings, trades, and cuts are made. You can follow our roster counts page to keep tabs on teams’ open spots as opening night nears.
We’re wrapping up our pre-camp Roster Snapshot series today with the Northwest Division. Let’s dive in…
Denver Nuggets
- Players on guaranteed standard contracts: 15
- Players on Exhibit 10 contracts: 3
- Players on two-way contracts: 2
The Nuggets don’t really need to make any roster moves between now and the start of training camp. Their projected 15-man regular season roster looks set, as do their two-way slots — Gillespie suffered a major leg injury, but Denver reportedly intends to hang onto him as he recovers.
Minnesota Timberwolves
- Players on guaranteed standard contracts: 12
- Players on non-guaranteed standard contracts: 3
- Nathan Knight (partial guarantee), Jaylen Nowell, Austin Rivers (partial guarantee)
- Players on Exhibit 10 contracts: 2
- Players on two-way contracts: 2
- Players who have reportedly reached contract agreements: 1
- Phillip Wheeler (Exhibit 10)
Knight, Nowell, and Rivers look like pretty safe bets to join the 12 players with guaranteed salaries on the 15-man regular season roster, but that’s not set in stone yet. The partial guarantees owed to Rivers ($650K) and Knight ($350K) are modest enough that the Wolves could theoretically go in a different direction without being on the hook for much money.
Still, a player like Elleby or Garza would probably have to really impress Minnesota in training camp and the preseason in order to make the regular season squad.
Oklahoma City Thunder
- Players on guaranteed standard contracts: 17
- Players on non-guaranteed standard contracts: 1
- Vit Krejci (partial guarantee)
- Players on two-way contracts: 2
- Players who have reportedly reached contract agreements: 2
- Sacha Killeya-Jones (Exhibit 10), Jaden Shackelford (Exhibit 10)
With 17 players on guaranteed contracts and Krejci owed a $782K partial guarantee, the Thunder will have to trade or release at least three players on standard deals before opening night. Bazley, Favors, Jerome, Maledon, and Krejci are among those whose roster spots may not be 100% guaranteed quite yet.
Additionally, while Oklahoma City doesn’t have a two-way opening, it wouldn’t be a shock if the team makes a change to one of its two-way slots in the next month and a half. A player in the second year of a two-way contract, like Waters, often has a tenuous hold on his spot if he hasn’t yet proven himself as a rotation player.
Portland Trail Blazers
- Players on guaranteed standard contracts: 14
- Players on Exhibit 10 contracts: 2
- Players on two-way contracts: 1
- Players who have reportedly reached contract agreements: 2
- Devontae Cacok (Exhibit 10), Olivier Sarr (Exhibit 10)
Having moved out of luxury tax territory by a hair, the Trail Blazers are unlikely to fill their 15th roster spot, which would put them back in the tax. But they do still have a two-way spot to fill — Miller, Rhoden, Cacok, and Sarr would all be eligible to have their Exhibit 10 contracts converted into two-way deals, so there could be an open competition in camp.
Utah Jazz
- Players on guaranteed standard contracts: 17
- Players on two-way contracts: 2
- Players who have reportedly reached contract agreements: 4
- Paris Bass (Exhibit 10), Kofi Cockburn (Exhibit 10), Darryl Morsell (Exhibit 10), Jeenathan Williams (Exhibit 10)
Having acquired more players than they sent out in the Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, and Patrick Beverley trades, the Jazz now have a roster logjam to clear. They’ll have to trade or waive at least two more players with guaranteed contracts before the regular season tips off.
It’s hard to say at this point whose roster spots might be in danger, since there are still several trade candidates on Utah’s roster, including Beasley, Bogdanovic, Bolmaro, Clarkson, Conley, Gay, and Johnson. If multiple players from that group are on the move in the coming weeks, the issue may ultimately sort itself out (for instance, trading three players in exchange for Russell Westbrook and draft compensation would quickly clear the excess).
Previously:
I forgot Denver got Bruce Brown, that could turn out to be a low-key great signing. In fact, their whole roster looks really, really solid. If Murray and Porter can really come back even close to full-strength this season Denver will be a legit contender.
I have some reservations on their PG quality, but Minnesota looks very scary from SG-C as well.
On the other end, you have Utah and OKC grappling for the “most likely to lose a G League game” roster.
Portland is the one true “Meh” here. Is a Lillard-Simons-Hart-Grant-Nurkic closing lineup really any better than anything they trotted out during the CJ era? Given Lillard’s age now, is it even as good?
Depth chart looks a little weak too – I love GP2 as much as anyone but if he and Justise Winslow are arguably your best bench guys … IDK. “Lillard to [insert]” might be in play by February.
Agreed on Denver, low key killer offseason for the means they had
Utah actually isn’t that bad today, tomorrow might be a different scenario
A healthy Denver team is the best team in the West right now. Denver really likes Bones Hyland which is why they traded Monte Morris to get Will Barton off the roster.
Utah is a full notch above OKC. The Baltimore Orioles have become a contender in baseball while OKC remains in full rebuild mode.
Portland is a mess. Can’t guard anybody! Hate to say that because Chauncey Billups is talented as a head coach.
Not sold on Minnesota. They gave up a haul in players, let alone draft picks to get Gobert. Jarryd Vanderbilt is a better fit on this roster than Gobert. If the opposing team likes to play “small ball” ….. you gonna still play Gobert/KAT together???
Moving forward, Anthony Edwards is the best player on the Minnesota roster, and they should have focused on building around him. Instead, they chose to try and cover up KAT’s defensive weaknesses with Rudy. In the process burning off highly valuable draft assets that could have been used to enhance the talent around Anthony Edwards, the future of the franchise! What draft assets you gonna put around Edwards in the future now when KAT loses a step? SMH.
When KAT loses a step? His game isn’t focused on athleticism and he’s like 26 years old. They’ll be fine.
It will have an athletic focus now with Gobert! He will now be even more on the perimeter, especially defensively.
Minnesota gave up a package for Rudy Gobert that was higher than the price paid for Donovan Mitchell. Perhaps if Minnesota had been smart enough to dispose of D’Angelo Russell, held onto Jarryd Vanderbilt and traded for Donovan Mitchell, I might be a bit more sold on Minny. You’ve never won a damn thing with KAT. Now you have to give up a monster haul to get somebody to guard his position. GTFOH. LMAO.
Hahaha what? You want Ant and Spyda to what..both play SG? All those picks are gonna be late firsts. Like. 20+. Walker Kessler type picks aren’t pushing Minn into legit contenders.
It’s not a monster haul when you dont give up a potential star young player. They traded ten dimes for a dollar.
You want to lean into more offense by adding Mitchell, when D and rebounding was the issue…ok.
Go ahead and list all these PF that are going to pose a problem for KAT athletically….
Sorry you don’t know anything about the Twolves but KAT played a blitzing style guarding ball handlers in the PnR last year and he his best defensive season. His problem is rim protection – solved. Dlo is best with a PnR lob finisher- solved. Also helps for his defensive liabilities.
Vando played the “5” last year mostly anyhow. Now a generational defender is playing that spot next to all the offense that KAT Ant and Dlo provide.
LMAO …. You do realize that Anthony Edwards natural position is PG. That is what he came up playing. I have been watching him since the 9th grade.
If KAT is doing all this “Blitzing” and guarding “Ball-Handlers” …… Then why the hell did Minnesota give up an absolute haul to bring in a defensive center????? You know, shoring up their biggest weakness!!!!!!!!!!
No it’s flat out not. His own words was that he doesn’t want to initiate the offense. Ant is no more a PG than MJ was.
I’m sure you’ve e been watching for however long, it’s just you don’t KNOW what you are watching.
Minn added a true defensive minded C because playing that blitzing style is taxing on the entire team. The players said as much and were gassed by the AllStar break last year.
They also want to be able to play multiple types of defense, now they can still blitz and play drop coverage with Rudy. Those are two different types of D. And yes a true drop C and defensive rebounding WAS the biggest weakness. They just addressed it and people are crying bc they are worried about some pick in 2029 or the 34yo Pat Bev or Vando who has value it’s just that Rudy does everything Vando does just infinitely better on both sides of the ball.
KAT is losing a step at…26…???
So you’re concerned with KAT “losing a step” right now at age 26 and you think that giving up a 2029 draft pick doesn’t give the Wolves a better chance to win right now by adding a generational defender?
You’re defeating your own weak arguments.
Also if teams want to play small ball, The Wolves can roll with SloMo and or Jaden McDaniels playing in the frontcourt.
It basically sounds like you have zero idea about the Wolves roster, what value late FRPs have, the now open contender window the Wolves created, and how good their coach is and the history he has working with bigs like Nikola, Boogie paired WITH Anthony Davis and others.
How is Vando a “better fit” when Rudy does the exact same thing just absolutely better at everything Vando provided last year?
You absolutely start worrying about a Big Fella losing a step. He may be 26, but he has been in the NBA since he was supposed to be a sophomore in college. Minnesota has NEVER won a damn thing with KAT. Jimmy Butler let you know all you need to know about him.
So KAT had never won anything…what should the FO do in your opinion. Give up? Cry? Quit?
Lol KAT opens the floor for Ant. Rudy can screen assist for Ant. Rudy can shore up the entire teams weaknesses which were D, rebounding and size.
I’ll let them know you think it’s a bad move and are really worried about that 2029 pick while they are marching their way to 50+ wins.
Dlo is the weak point of the Wolves roster…
But could be unlocked on offence with Gobert… His defence will be the biggest question mark for the team… As Rivers and McLaughlin are his back ups… Rivers might play better D, but McLaughlin is a drink stirring speedy guard who will see most of the backup 1 minutes…
If Dlo can elevate his game and play smart team first basketball the Wolves are deadly… If he continues to take more shots than Ant or KAT this team is in jeopardy of the play in…
The 2-5 spots are well filled and deep… Skill ball with size to crush small ball…
Nothing is being “unlocked”. D’Angelo started saying that nonsense after the trade. Nobody has any respect for Rudy Gobert’s offensive game other than lobs. Gobert is a bad fit. KAT and D’Angelo will BOTH now be launching more 3’s.
Just think, Minnesota could have EASILY won the bidding war for DeJuante Murray. Dump D’Angelo and could have thrown some picks to get Murray and have your backcourt moving forward be Anthony Edwards and Murray. Ouch!!!!!
Lol. KAT launching 3s is a bad thing now?? Dude is a 40% 3pt shooter who NEEDS to be shooting 8+ threes a game.
They didn’t and don’t want Murray bc Murray isn’t going to re-sign with any team bc of how the contacts work and the pay raise he could get from his current team, now the Hawks.
Besides Murray isn’t half the player Rudy is nor does he address the Wolves biggest needs, an interior presence.
Rudy Gobert plays a position in the traditional way in the post. That way has been legislated OUT of the NBA with rule changes.
Gobert was such an impact player that Utah decided to rebuild. they realized it was a lost cause in today’s NBA.
Utah flat lined bc the pairing wasn’t enough, and they were capped out with no future picks or trade ale assets to really change up anything significant Ant is going to be better than Spyda (this year even) and that’s not to mention how much better the team is top to bottom than anything Utah has ran out there in the last 5 years.
Rudy = Rudy
KAT > Bogdan
Jaden > Royce O
Ant = Spyda offensively while being 6-6 and way higher ceiling on both ends.
Dlo = the corpse of Mike Conley
Nowell (you’ve probly never heard of him) but is going to be a 6th man candidate like Clarkson
Utah never had anyone on the bench as good as SloMo…
I had not heard that defense and rebounding was a “lost cause” in todays NBA. Thanks for the update.
I think you meant Christian Braun.
Thanks, that’s been corrected.
It’s Christian Braun in Denver, not Christian Brown
I thought I read somewhere that Aaron Wiggins had a non guaranteed contract. Is his deal fully guaranteed?
Fully guaranteed for 2022/23. Non-guaranteed for two seasons beyond that.
The Nuggets and Wolves will fight it out for the top spot in this division…
Both could have home court advantage in the playoffs…
Anyone writing off the Wolves for a twin towers set up didn’t watch the NBA finals…
Where Bostons twin towers of Horford and Williams went up against Golden State’s Looney and Draymond…
Skill ball is the winning combination against small ball…
Exactly how many points did these “Twin Towers” duo’s produce. Horford and Williams. Big Boys … Yes. Did either shoot anything other than a 3? Looney and Draymond …. Did they ever combine for more than 10 points???? LMAO
It’s funny to see you expose your ignorance so frequently.
Williams doesn’t shoot threes, other than in desperation. He’s 0-3 in his career, 0-2 in the playoffs.
Looney and Dray AVERAGED 13.8 ppg in last season’s playoffs.
Looney and Dray averaged 13.8 ppg. Opposing teams are really, really concerned about how they are gonna stop that offensive output! Your ignorance seems to come out on every post. I am guessing 15 years old?
Boston’s 6’9″ Horford and 6’8″ Williams are “twin towers”?
Lol, Looney and Kuminga are the same height!
Naz Reid (Minnesota) is non-guaranteed until league wide guarantee date of 1/10/23
It was scheduled to become fully guaranteed on July 20 and I’ve seen no reports about that date being pushed back. My understanding is that it’s guaranteed.
Ohh okay, I just go off the information provided on spotrac which still has the guarantee date as 1/10/23
Yeah, that’s an odd one — I remember Keith tweeting about Reid’s July 20 guarantee date at the time, so it’s weird that he would’ve changed it to 1/10/23 on Spotrac without a follow-up tweet explaining why.
I do have another source saying Reid’s salary is guaranteed, so my assumption for now is that the Spotrac listing is a mistake, but I’ll keep an eye out for any further updates.
