Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards could face a fine or suspension for making homophobic comments in an Instagram video, Chris Hine of the Star Tribune writes. Edwards has since apologized for his remark on social media.
“What I said was immature, hurtful, and disrespectful, and I’m incredibly sorry,” Edwards wrote (Twitter link). “It’s unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such a hurtful way, there’s no excuse for it, at all. I was raised better than that!”
As Hine notes, Edwards used the word “queer” when describing someone in a derogatory way. The video has since been deleted. Multiple players, including Kevin Durant and Nikola Jokic, have faced fines for making homophobic remarks off the court in recent years.
Here are some other notes from the Western Conference:
- The Thunder have hired former player DJ White as a video analyst, the team announced on social media (Twitter link). White is the fifth former Thunder player who is now working in the organization. He played 42 games with the team from 2008-11.
- James Ham of TheKingsBeat.com examines whether head coach Mike Brown can fix the Kings’ defensive woes. Sacramento had the fourth-worst defensive rating last season, finishing with just a 30-52 record. Brown was hired as head coach of the team in May.
- C.J. Holmes of the San Francisco Chronicle explores why Warriors guard Moses Moody will face high expectations this season. Moody, 20, was drafted No. 14 overall by the team in 2021. He appeared in 52 games last season, averaging 4.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 11.7 minutes per contest. He also averaged 31.8 points and 7.0 rebounds in four G League outings.
IMO Moody could easily replace Poole and save GSW millions by not having to resign him to a massive extension.
4.4 and 1.5 in just under 12 minutes as a rookie while putting up 32 and 7 in the g league.
I agree.
They have been playing Moody in the Front Court. I think they are looking at Weatherspoon as a replacement for Poole.
@SFGiants
Please. Weatherspoon is on another 2 way deal. His career 3 pt FG% is 19%.
He’s never going to replace Poole – at age 26, he will be lucky if McClung doesn’t take his place on the roster.
@NBA His contract status doesn’t mean a whole lot. Look at GPII. This time, last year, the Warriors had already cut him. He was applying to be their video coordinator. Look how that turned out. Oh, he is also older.
@SFGiants
This time last year, Weatherspoon was also on a 2 way deal, but unlike GPII, he only played in 11 NBA games (only in garbage time) and 9 G league games.
Maybe he should apply to be a video coordinator, because he sure isn’t going to replace Poole!
You’d love that, wouldn’t you? Because it would mean GSW wouldn’t be stomping the league again. Why are you pocket watching an owner who has said millions of times he wants all 8 players locked down? Money doesnt matter to Lacob, he has stated it over and over, please stop the cope.
Everyone’s staying except Wiggins, get over it.
Weird. why have Moody replace Poole when he’s a perfect teammate? GSW wants to keep Poole, not “save millions”.
Moody’s 4 game G league stats are impressive, but so were Poole’s his 1st year.
He put up 22-5-3 in 11 games in the g league as a rookie. So not as impressive. However in the NBA as a rookie he averaged 9-2-2 in 22 minutes.
How’s he the perfect teammate anyway, they both play SG and both have a relatively similar game. I’m sure GSW would like to keep Poole but what if he wants a rookie max extension, you keep him then?
Probably not cause you have Moody which can replace him and save yourself hundreds of millions
Moody’s a better defender, Poole a better passer, and at 6’6″ paired with Poole at 6’4″ they have good size.
Wolves fans in here showing exactly why their franchise is cursed and never ever winning a chip lmao
You’re a bandwagon fan from another country. Sit down
It wasn’t like he’s directly insulting anyone. It’s a joke. He shouldn’t get fined or cancelled. It literally doesn’t matter at all.
In a microcosm, yes you are right, it doesnt matter. But if we do what you say and act like “its doesnt matter” (probably DOES matter a lot to gay Wolves fans, FYI) but what you don’t understand when you have this attitude is that what you are now fighting for is NORMALIZING hate speech here, which is a big time no, no, nooooope.
This is exactly out of the right wing playbook: “doesnt matter/no big deal” becomes “you are worse for wanting equal rights” so quick.
I do want equal rights and I find inequality ridiculous. But people are too sensitive about this stuff
it doesn’t matter if you find it rude or offensive, anyone should be able to say whatever they want unless it’s advocating violence or pedophilia or doxing. If I want to call someone a name I should be able to call them that name.
I mean. You can.
Words have consequences…always have. Just like you have the right to say what you want, other people have the right to call you out. Freedom of speech does not cover the fragile minds trying to protect the old ways. You may not think it’s offensive or rude, you are entitled to an opinion. And people that think you are enabling an old culture of hate or are being demeaning can express that. If you don’t want to be considered hateful, change up your words. People know what they saying means and it’s with a negative connotation…don’t try to play innocent. I remember back in the 90s we used to call everything “gay” but meant it as lame. You know what we did? We just started saying lame instead.
And if your employer has a code of conduct policy in the contract, you can surely be punished for saying things. Also, try calling your wife or gf the C word and see how they react. They should be ok with it…let me know
People are forgetting Poole is only a 3rd year player. He’s a hard worker and he’s still developing. Without Poole, Warriors would have struggled in the regular and postseason. And dare I say but he pushed and motivated Curry as well. There were times Poole actually outshined Curry, but Curry embraced it and stepped up to the challenge. They are good for each other.
Hope and pray Poole wont get greedy and give Warriors a home discount. Lacob will take care of him on his next contract after this one. Poole can win more titles at GS and continue to learn and develop instead of getting lost elsewhere.
I agree, but it’s unlikely. Hopefully GSW can figure out a win/win before the extension deadline!
