The Cavaliers knew they were getting a star when they traded for Donovan Mitchell, but so far he’s been better than anyone anticipated, writes Jason Lloyd of The Athletic. Mitchell had 38 points and a career-high 12 assists Sunday night as Cleveland won its fifth straight game, topping a Knicks team that spent much of the summer trying to acquire Mitchell from the Jazz. Even though he’s a three-time All-Star, Mitchell is exceeding expectations.
“We already had such a great group, but I think he just elevates us to another place,” Kevin Love said. “A guy that has experience, a guy that is a star in this league is playing some really great basketball right now. … We don’t see any signs of him slowing down.”
Through six games with the Cavs, Mitchell ranks fourth in the league in scoring at 32.2 PPG and is in the top 10 in assists at 7.3 per night. Both numbers would be career highs by a wide margin if he can sustain them for an entire season. Mitchell doesn’t feel like he’s a different player since the trade, but says he was often overlooked in Utah.
“We were in Mountain time. No one really watched us, so you kinda fall under the radar,” he said. “I feel like I’ve just been doing this nonstop, and I just continue to get better and more efficient. … I think this has been my best stretch in my career, but I gotta keep going.”
There’s more from Cleveland:
- Mitchell, who at one point during the offseason was convinced he was going to wind up in New York, told Steve Popper of Newsday that he wasn’t trying to deliver any kind of message to the Knicks in Sunday’s game. “It’s easy to point to the summer and say that [it was payback], but I’m pretty much friends with everybody on that team, so it’s always good to play against your guys and I have nothing but love for them,” Mitchell said.
- Caris LeVert impressed Mitchell with his 41-point outburst in Friday’s win at Boston, per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. LeVert won the competition for the starting small forward slot, but is currently being used at shooting guard while Darius Garland is sidelined with an eye injury. “I played against Caris in Brooklyn and nothing against him last year, he had the injuries, but I think this is the Caris we all know,” Mitchell said. “He looks healthy and looks different. He was due. He’s been an animal. He led us by example.”
- Coach J.B. Bickerstaff said the swelling in Garland’s eye has gone down and the team is waiting for him to become more comfortable with his vision, tweets Kelsey Russo of The Athletic.
This Cavs team is the most fun ever. Even last year it looked like they were missing something, but right now, they’re fully realized. Can’t wait for Garland to get back. #letemknow
Lol @ exceeding expectations. Where have yall been? This guy been a beast since he was a rookie. It’s extremely obv that most ppl (esp on this site) just haven’t seen Donovan Mitchell play much. Which is weird considering how often he’s been on national TV over the past few yrs. Ppl were in here talking crazy about him lacking pg skills & being terrible defensively like this guy ain’t 1 of the very best players in the world rn. Watching him completely dominate the Knicks was just great stuff last night, especially that dunk on Hartenstein lol. It’s gonna be even worse when he comes to MSG.. link to m.youtube.com
To be fair, he hasn’t really been all that solid of a perimeter defender thus far in his career, but offensively he’s been a walking bucket since joining the league as a rookie.
Lol @ ypu thinking that youre being fair. He ain’t been all that elite as a perimeter defender but he’s def been solid. He’s comparable to other great scorers like Nique or Karl Malone or VCarter defensively & better than a lot of other great scorers. It was very obvious that guys were just desperately grasping at anything trying to discredit him. People were saying he’s not a good shooter lol all type of ridiculousness. If Devin Booker or Ja Morant or Anthony Edwards are ever insolent enough to change teams the same ppl will come at them the exact same way
They only hate cause he was coming to Knicks. It’s a thing here…….
I want that Sexton is better than Mitchell. Cavs fan to come back now.
I still believe that caris should come off the bench. While yes he had a great game with 41 points, last night showed that he can’t sustain that kind of efficiency. He is still amazing and helps us in a big way, but I believe Dean Wade should get that starting 3 spot. Dean is consistent and plays good defense. And his height helps the team too! Caris would do us wonders if he came off the bench!
42 points in his last two games…
I think that very well might be the first time in NBA history that a player has followed up a 40+ point game with less than 2 points!!
Either way, if Love and LeVert can continue taking turns having excellent scoring nights, this team will be scary to stop come playoff time…
Even without Garland, that Mitchell, Okoro, Wade, Love, and Mobley rotation did some serious work against the Knicks and stuck it to them..
And dont forget ricky rubio will hopefully be back before the seasons over
Rubio is the perfect depth piece for the Cavs. They are definitely in the mix to come out of the east.
Knicks made a huge mistake not making that trade. Most people on here and most of my friends didn’t want the Knicks to give up what it would have taken. Just don’t understand how you can pass up on a superstar in his prime, who actually wanted to be a Knick. Especially after we’ve been turned down by every free agent star for over a decade.
I totally agree with you that Leon and company dropped the ball on this dynamic guard. Let’s be honest RJ Barrett has been a utter disappointment and so has Mitchell Robinson who is foul prone and still has not one offensive go to move. RJ is slow still can’t shoot and doesn’t play above the rim. I’m sorry but us Knicks fans overvalued these young kids that may never turn into All Stars. Leon got hired to sign Or trade for a Bonafide Superstar and we are still waiting for that like the guy at prom who can’t find his prom date because she ran off with the school Jock.
The preference for dice rolls and lottery tickets (the essence of every single draft pick) over the proven commodity, one who is just entering their prime, and actually had mutual interest with the organization…will forever be a baffling one.
It takes two upper tier stars to begin realistic expectations of deep playoff runs. Preferably one top-10 guy and another top-30. Before you can have two…*GASP*…you need one. Getting Mitchell could have simply been accomplishing that — step one of a multipart process.
Not sure what the plan is now. Not too confident the FO knows either. Like I said a while ago, the first warning sign was when they drafted a PF at #8 in 2020 and re-signed a PF to an extension in 2021, while they needed a point guard. And all these months later now people are starting to realize to ask “….oh…what is Leon & Co. doing…?”
Knick experts after 5 gms. Gotta love real fans ………
Knicks were in that gm. Till Donovan took over. I’m still waiting for Thibs to finally give up on Randle. Obi1 is so much better for Jalen and this team.
Hey Al you say Knicks experts after 5 games and you say Obi is much better than Randle you were the same guy waving the prom poms for the Knicks to trade Obi Topping and some of these other young guys who will never be as good as the Cleveland Closer Donovan Mitchell who Leon struck out on like all his so call trade proposals. And news Flash RJ Obi And IQ are good rotation pieces but they will never be superstars like Donovan Mitchell Kryie Irving Jason Tatum Kwahi Leonard Ja Morant Devin Booker just to name a few .
And don’t hold your breath about this lousy Knicks coach who is as stubborn as Ebenezer Scrooge when it comes to Julias Randle. Thibs is like a lame leopard you can’t change his spots. The Knicks are going nowhere with this lame stubborn lousy offensively challenges coach.
I’m impressed they won so easily without Garland. Cavs got talent. But let’s wait till all star gm. To see who they really are.
