Ben Simmons understands that it doesn’t take much for him to become a target on social media, writes Nick Friedell of ESPN. The latest example was a video of an airball he shot Sunday during the Nets‘ annual outdoor practice at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
“Meanwhile, like 10 guys airballed multiple shots,” Simmons told Friedell. “So it’s like people will find one clip and try to make that everything — like Ben can’t do (this or that). Like come on man, you think I’m just airballing every shot? It’s not true. But it comes with it, and you got to have tough skin and I realize that, but nah, I can’t take everything personally. It’s social media.”
Simmons’ shooting woes with the Sixers, especially from the foul line, made him a target for derision from Philadelphia fans long before his public battle with the team. He hopes to change the narrative about his game this season, and he believes he’s in a more uplifting environment.
“I got support from all these guys, the coaching staff, the organization, so it’s up to me to go out there to do my job now and work. But you know, (Kevin Durant), (Kyrie Irving) have been great to me. Royce (O’Neale) has been phenomenal. It feels like home. It feels normal to be here and come to work. Besides that, we just need to put that work in and build some chemistry.”
There’s more on the Nets:
- The team is willing to be patient as Simmons works his way back from a 16-month absence, Friedell adds in a separate story. Simmons had a combined nine assists and eight turnovers in his first two preseason games, and he’s been reluctant to shoot from any sort of distance. “I think for Ben a lot of it is not just the understanding, it’s the reps,” coach Steve Nash said. “He hasn’t played for a long time. He’s coming off of back surgery, so I think there’s some periods of indecision and confidence that he has to gain from playing. All of us do. We can’t take that much time off, join a new group and just figure it out Day 1, so he needs time.”
- Durant appeared to get worn down last season and the Nets are hoping to reduce his workload, according to Ethan Sears of The New York Post. Durant averaged 37.2 minutes per game, which was the most he’s played since 2013/14. “Every coach that I play for wants to keep my minutes down,” he said. “But when the game’s tight or you’re not playing well, you’re not gonna look over and say, ‘Well, I wanna keep his minutes down tonight.’ He’s gonna throw me in the game. We’re playing well, my minutes will be down. If we’re not, I’ll play more.”
- Foot soreness has limited Joe Harris to one preseason game, but he’s optimistic that he’ll be ready for the season opener, Friedell tweets.
Draymond requested $164 million max contract now.
Lakers are willing to pay Draymond and tax
Warriors want to get younger
Trade idea
Warriors get Simmons
Lakers Get Draymond and Hield
Pacers get Westbrook and picks
Nets get Turner, McConnell and Moody
Lakers are desperate.
Lakers are NOT willing to pay Draymond Green a Max deal.
The Lakers only have LeBron and A.D. under contract for next year. Yes, they will have room to add Draymond. However, adding Draymond does not make the Lakers a title contender. They don’t need Draymond’s passing. They have LeBron.
Lakers ain’t using that cap space on Draymond.
Draymond is gonna get his $$$$ somewhere. It won’t be the Lakers. LeBron wants title’s. He has A.D. as his buddy on the team. Draymond is not the best fit.
The Warriors are very young.
why would Brooklyn do this…
Ben Simmons was terrific tonight for Brooklyn. He is going nowhere! He matched up well against Giannis. This Milwaukee/Brooklyn thing is gonna be interesting in the East.
Sorry, Philly, Miami, Cleveland, Boston, Toronto, Atlanta. You are all playing for 3rd.
Gonna be interesting before BRK inevitably blows up because of bad personalities.
It looks like the so-called “bad personalities” get along together pretty well. Kyrie and Ben have definitely “bonded” over the fact that they both get so much negative attention from media and fans.
Ben has the perfect Regular Season situation for himself. He doesn’t have to shoot! Pass, Rebound, Defend.
Ben’s life gets more challenging in the Playoffs. He still doesn’t have to shoot, but he has to avoid getting fouled to stay away from the free throw line. Hack-A-Ben could become a thing.
You’re a homer though. A lot of people on here, like yourself, just talk up their favorite team so it makes their takes seem disingenuous.
Brooklyn is NOT my favorite team. I do NOT have a “favorite” team. I think Brooklyn and Milwaukee are a notch above the rest of East in the Playoffs. I just call it like I see it.
I am from Chicago. My younger days I was a Bulls fan. I am no longer a “fan” of any team. Love the game. Call it how I see it.
Sorry you are blind.
If you’re not a Brooklyn homer then you have some pretty bad takes.
.
I’m crying I’m laughing so hard. Same excuses from baby Ben. Glue him to the bench at crunch time.
@ Very
Lol
I would rather have Simmons than Trae
Trae is one of the 3 worst defensive players in the NBA.
Thankfully you are just kidding.
Lol yea they were all air balling from 5 feet away. He shot the ball into a different borough.
Not entirely sure that “Ben Simmons” and “work” should ever appear in the same sentence…
Nets didnt replace the defense they lost in the front court behind KD, Simmons, and Claxton. They already have Nash hurting their chances, but they need those spots to be a top 5 team in the east, and they dont have it on this roster. There should be several options available at those positions by the end of training camp, some of which currently available, and they should strongly consider making those additions
Also would like to see them starting with lineups with Kyrie, O’neal at the 3, KD at the 4, and Simmons at the 5, with either Curry or Harris at the 2…that might actually help in that depth situation b/c then you have Claxton off the bench at the 4/5
It would be nice to pair Curry with Simmons again, but you could still do that in the 2nd unit when Simmons moves positions, and then they have Sumner and/or Duke for guard/wing defense off the bench, and Curry brings more scoring potential in that bench spot, which would probably otherwise be Cam Thomas or Patty Mills. They also have Warren as a scoring 4 off the bench though, so that Curry/Harris decision is interesting with different standpoints
Nets didn’t replace their frontcourt defense?????? Really???? Ben Simmons has been added to the frontcourt defense, and they lost Blake Griffin. Massive upgrade defensively. Royce O’Neal is gonna play the 3. He was Utah’s top defender behind Gobert, and ALWAYS guarded the opponents top perimeter threat. This team is much improved defensively!!
Doc couldn’t defend Ben’s total lack of a offensive game why are you trying.
You missed the words “behind Kd, Simmons, and Claxton”
It was in your first sentence, apparently he didn’t read that far.
“Meanwhile, like 10 guys airballed multiple shots,” Simmons told Friedell
Hey Ben, here’s the difference, nobody is gonna notice if someone like KD shoots an airball
