The Rockets claimed forward Darius Days off waivers and may give him their available two-way contract, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Days was waived by the Heat on Sunday, right after his two-way contract was converted to an Exhibit 10 deal. Miami was hoping Days would clear waivers and that he’d join its G League affiliate in Sioux Falls. However, the Rockets had other plans for him.
Days was given a two-way contract in mid-July after a strong Summer League showing with the Spurs. The strong play of rookie Jamal Cain this season led Miami to give him the two-way slot Days previously held.
Days, a 6’7″, 245-pound forward, played four seasons at LSU and averaged 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds for the Tigers last season.
Probably won’t see a lot of playing time, but nice pick up by the Rockets. If this guy gets quite a bit of minutes, it means Tate Jr, Sengun, Matthews, smith jr, Marjonvic, and even Martin Jr underperformed or hits the injury list. I would be interested in what he can do, but it seems like any position he plays, has depth in front of him. To me, it was a savage move by the Rockets because this guy is more than capable of coming off the bench and averaging 12-14 minutes per game. But due to the “pecking order”, he’ll be lucky to get 5 minutes per game.
On a side note, they waived 2 and gave a two way contract to days while being 1 player over the 15 man active roster. Who else are they planing to release/waive? Martin Jr, Nix, Garuba? Garuba has a huge upside if he plays. With Jabari Smith Jr (Rockets love the “juniors” apparently), Tate Jr, Favors, and Eason, Martin Jr becomes expendable. Garuba could be too, but I think he showed enough last year to keep him around and getting minutes.
The depth of this team, is going to create some tough decisions going forward. He stays, who goes, who plays, and who sits. Favors they classify as a center, but Sengun and Marjonic will be using the minutes there. Favor will potentially see the floor as a power forward and occasionally center pending injuries. Either way, the depth is nice from guards to the center. All spots have 3-4 guys per position with some able to play multiple positions. Real pressure is on KPJ this year. If he turns things up a notch, that extension looks possible. He needs to handle the ball better and learn some defense. If he improves in both areas and capable of scoring like last year, would likely give him and extension. Which hurts TyTy whom I think is better paired with Jalen Green than KPJ/Green combo.
0% they release KJ Martin. Garrison Mathew’s would be my guess. Also not sure what you’re talking about Garuba last year was awful. Boban will probably only get spot minutes, Bruno Fernando seems to have the backup center spot locked up
Dude, you talk stupid. Did you just say Eason become expendable for a Days’ roster spot??? Are you dense? Eason is a 17th pick in the ’22 draft, and playing very well for the Rockets. Days is an undrafted player in the D-League. I mean, are you even competent about these things? And KJ Martin is not about to lose his spot to Days, either. Both Eason and KJ are superior talents to Days.
I think he was saying Eason was a keeper and that’s what made KJ Martin expendable. No need for calling anyone stupid, he was just giving his opinion
I was saying Martin is expendable. They have too much talent and not enough minutes to go around. Martin Jr has a solid return compared to others on the current roster. 1 has to go through waiver or trade. No way did I suggest Eason was going anywhere. All draft picks from the last 2 years are staying. Guys like Martin, Nix, and some others, could be moved to get within the limit.
@Latino You are correct on Matthews and figured he would be an emergency bench player with Days. If a guy or two goes down, one of the two will see some minutes. With all the draft picks they received the last few years, it clogs certain positions. I hate they drafted guys and potentially reduce Martin or Tate playing time. They are overloaded and not everyone is going to see a proper set of minutes this year. Silas is going to be attempting to put the puzzle together on a day to day look. A guy that plays one week, may not play another week if they don’t fit the scheme of things. I am excited about this young team, but tough decisions are going to be made throughout the season. Eyes will be on KPJ and it’s his make or break season.
There is a small chance Houston waives him to go to their G-league team i guess?
Because I assume Miami couldnt claim him off waivers again…
Damn. This type of stuff seems to happen to the Heat a lot.
Really unfortunate timing too, b/c they could have kept Darius Days, and now they lost him to Houston, who has so many others at his positions anyway, all b/c they didnt wait the extra couple of days to let him get a shot in a good matchup Monday, where they should have cut Orlando Robinson instead, if they wanted to bring in Mulder. That is actually really frustrating, considering that Days fills positions of need
I speculated it for a couple of days that maybe Garrett might be the guy to have to unfortunately lose, and then they cut Days for some reason, and Garrett gets hurt, but then Days doesnt even get through waivers b/c it was obviously a poor decision to let him go
I prefer Days over Cain as well, as he can play the 4/5
He was waived “Days” ago
