The Sixers thought their offseason moves would make them a title contender, but they haven’t looked the part through the first week of the season, writes Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. After opening with losses to the Celtics and Bucks, Philadelphia dropped to 0-3 on Saturday by falling at home to the rebuilding Spurs.
“I’m happy that we are going through this right now,” said James Harden, who admits that “everything” needs to be addressed. “We don’t have fool’s gold. We got to work through it. We gotta figure it out on both ends. Realistically, it’s a good thing for us.”
The most obvious issues have been on defense, which the Sixers focused on upgrading this summer. Pompey cites a lack of intensity on that end of the court and an inability to stay in front of wing players. Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson and Doug McDermott all had big games Saturday as the Spurs shot 48.3% from the field, including 42.1% on three-pointers.
“We do have to give them credit. They made tough shots,” Tobias Harris said. “But on our part, that’s not the standard of defense that we hold ourselves to.”
There’s more from Philadelphia:
- The Sixers aren’t getting enough production from their bench, Pompey adds. Their reserves were outscored by San Antonio’s, 40-10, with Georges Niang contributing eight of those points. Montrezl Harrell, De’Anthony Melton, Danuel House and Matisse Thybulle shot a combined 1-of-6. Pompey notes that Thybulle gives the team a stronger defensive presence, but he has barely been used so far this season.
- Joel Embiid dealt with plantar fasciitis this summer that affected his ability to train, tweets Sixers reporter Derek Bodner. Embiid said it began to affect him during team workouts in July, and it reached a point where he couldn’t walk. “Coming into training camp I hadn’t done anything in like two months, so it really slowed me down,” he said. “Still trying to work my way back and hopefully everything goes back to normal.”
- Former Sixers coach Brett Brown was back in Philadelphia on Saturday for the first time since getting fired in 2020, Pompey adds in a separate story. After being out of the NBA for two years, Brown rejoined the Spurs’ coaching staff in June. “He meant a lot,” Embiid said. “Obviously, he started the whole thing and things didn’t work out the way they should have. But he did a great job and he’s one of the reasons why we’re in this position.”
Always an excuse with this embiid guy. Didn’t he have a torn pinky finger that needed surgery ? Now he had something going on with his foot ? Lol. I will say it again: IF YOUR BEST PLAYER IS A CENTER IN TODAYS NBA YOU WILL NOT WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP!
What position do u consider Giannis to be??
Have you seen Jokic play lately???
When did Jokic get a ring?
Jokic’s MVP’s belong to Steph Curry, period.
Giannis can guard & play EVERY position. Jokic lost in the 1st round last season even though he won MVP & had looney matched up on him.
Jokic had no talent around him. They were decimated by injury. His second best player was Aaron Gordon. The fact he even dragged the nuggets to so many wins and a playoff birth is why he won back to back MVP awards
Jokic is very skillful, but he is 7ft in a small ball era, so his numbers look great during a watered down regular season, but he is a defensive liability(can’t switch , only can play 1 coverage) & he NEEDS the ball to be successful. Pick & roll is crucial during the playoffs and that is what jokic struggles with. Warriors exploited that in last years playoffs.
MVP honors are based strictly on the regular season. I’m never sure I like that yardstick, but that’s the way it is. The playoffs have nothing to do with the regular season MVP award. This is stating the most obvious of facts.
Joel Embiid’s injury-prone body only has 1 or maybe 2 bites left at the Championship apple.
Embiid and Harden are now destined to go down on “no ring” ship together.
He led the NBA in scoring bonehead.
Lol – and lost in the 2nd rd as injuries limited him to 4 games. Better luck this time!
The difference between Lakers and Celtics benches on the court
Those Lakers run like “no head chicken”
Those 76ers jump like “no head chicken”
Trade trade trade
I think the exact same thing.
Harden and Maxey lack of defensive focus
Harden is disinterested in defense bc of next contract but Maxey needs defensive focus
You can if you play like a center. He’s all over the court. Get your ass in the block and play like a true center. That will free up space on the court.
Philly is gonna struggle to win consistently as long as their perimeter defense remains this leaky. Not surprising at all that this site tried to put McDermott’s contributions on the same level as Keldon Johnson & Vassell smh but Tre Jones was able to get wherever he wanted for most of the game, especially down the stretch & thats a problem for the 76ers. As great as Maxey is as a scorer, id def consider using him as a 6th man & starting Melton or Thybulle to slow down opposing lead guards… link to m.youtube.com
“Not surprising at all that this site tried to put McDermott’s contributions on the same level as Keldon Johnson & Vassell smh.”
Exactly what are you insinuating? Spell it out for us
Totally agree with you. Taking shots at jojo who put up 40 while still not in shape or harden who puts up back to back 30 plus is ludicrous. Perimeter defense and I think lack of overall cohesion is this units biggest issue. Long season ahead.
Philly is a very good team, Anyone that says otherwise is being disingenuous.
They will definitely make the playoffs maybe even win a round but yet to see a reason why the team they face in rd 2 isn’t gonna do to them what heat did last year !
So I guess it depends on their point of view they have no reason with this roster to have championship or bust expectations! But they are a good team they will win a about 48 games
Like Westbrook, Doc Rivers is not the main problem
76ers need a world class bench to win 55 games this season?
What if Lakers have world class bench?
@ Curtisrowe:
0-3 with an avg bench score so far of 11.3 ppg is not very good.
I obviously understand they aren’t playing well and they definitely aren’t a championship contender. But a very good team nonetheless.
Always an excuse for Joel. He can’t use Simmons as an excuse this year, so he’s gotta come up with something new.
Plantar faciitis didnt keep him from working out for two months. Havid HAD plantar faciitis gave him an excuse to not work out for two months.
Which former/current 76er frontcourt duo would you rather have, Clarence Weatherspoon/Shawn Bradley, Georges Niang/Montrezl Harrell, Robert Covington/Jahlil Okafor, Mo Speights/Sam Dalembert or Jellybean Bryant/Caldwell Jones? Rank a top3 if possible…
Weatherspoon/Bradley
I love me some Caldwell Jones though.
This is the Chicago guys all the way.
Robert Covington/Jahlil Okafor. Okafor remains one of the best low-post scorer’s on the planet. I personally know pretty much ALL of the Chicago guys. Known these two since middle school.
Covington was about to go to Division II Wisconsin-Parkside before my guy Dana Ford offered him at Tennessee State. Rest is history.
I remember 1st time I saw Covington was when he led TSU to a big upset over Isaiah Canaans Murray St squad that was headed towards an undefeated season at the time. I prob go with these 2 as well tbh. I agree Jah could be in the league rn
Fact is this sixers roster isn’t loaded! It’s a super super poor man’s version of the Shaq and Kobe lakers and their supporting cast ! Lakers stars where all time and the supporting cast was just enough to win big where as the sixers stars aren’t all time and their supporting isn’t close to talented enough , even maxey is pretty dam good but he’s not a future all star or anything
Doc Rivers is the coach. Nothing else needs to be said.
That’s a problem too but the roster is low key kinda trash! Goin on with the lakers comparisons the sixers are like a eastern conference version of the current lakers ! Two stars that don’t automatically make them title contenders bc they have flaws that keep their teams from being a contender ! And a weak supporting cast esp that bench ! Sixers have the worst bench in the nba in talent! And spare me trash we are going on three seasons where he’s been unplayable , pj tucker might have finally reached cooked status as well at 35
And esp for this year I seriously doubt Dave Jäegermeister or Sam I am are getting this team to the ecf ! I wouldn’t mind seeing Sam get his shot though
Sixers should win with Embiid and Harden. Roster has talent, but is constructed horribly.
You need role players, team chemistry and a commitment to defense to win. Philly has 2 legit superstars. Not enough to compliment them with.
Philly and the Lakers are on VERY dangerous ground right now with Embiid and Anthony Davis. Every time these guys hit the floor you have to wonder if they will get up. If they don’t …. Season over!
If Anthony Davis was still in New Orleans, he wouldn’t even bother getting up. Just take the check and call it. Since Davis cares about what his ultimate “Laker” legacy will be, and doesn’t want Laker fans on his head. He pulls himself off the floor.
Sorry your brother nerlens turned out to be a lottery bust by the Sixers, but your putrid animosity towards them clouds your minimal knowledge of NBA talent and roster construction.
Again factually the sixers are not a loaded team
It’s been a whole 3 games.
Sure and they will win 48 to 50 games maybe win a playoff series An then get worked in rd 2 ! It’s to bad for them things didn’t work out Jimmy butler that year and in free agency 2019
“I’m happy that we are going through this right now,” said James Harden,
Sure. You must be thrilled.
Doc Rivers is the problem! He doesn’t give Thybulle or Paul Reed minutes. Both are high energy bench players. Do what the Phillies did, pull the plug early!
Harden is the biggest fraud in NBA history who’s MVP awards rightfully belong to Steph Curry.
Curry is straight up more valuable than Harden, Jokic and Russ combined and all those posers MVP’s are fraudulent and should be retroactively given to the rightful winner, Steph Curry, wanna know why? RINGS. CURRY KNOWS HOW TO WIN. ITS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE LEAGUE.
Doc Rivers needs to man up. He is not a good coach. He won once in Boston. He could not win with Chris Paul and won’t win in Philly. They had Jimmy Butler and traded him too. At least they have the eagles and Phillies. When Doc is gone maybe they will rise.
Harden is right about one thing. Best to go thru this now. Sixers are better than this. Team chemistry takes awhile to jell. Their D and bench scoring has to be better. Id say give them 25-30 gms to see the real Sixers. Still ,,,,, this team should not lose to Spurs. Especially at home.
Let’s see where they are after Christmas. If they are sub 500 then you can panic.
they won’t be.
@ Curtisrowe:
Don’t be too sure. Through Dec 31 they have 15 games with last year’s playoff teams and 16 with teams that missed the playoffs, including the Clippers, @ Cavs on a B2B, and the Knicks home and away. 6 B2Bs in that stretch.
If they’re over .500 it won’t be by much.
You’re really digging the three-game sample size.
I can’t stand Philly, but I think they’ll end up winning 50ish.
I am wrong all the time though, none of this is science. Just educated guesses.
PHI are missing hard D… if only they had some great perimeter defender… oh, wait… they had Ben, right?
I think he is sorely missed, too bad he wasn’t appreciated when they had him!
I was a Ben defender right up til his BS. A lot of us were Ben defenders. We waited and waited for him to develop and waited some more and then we were like bleepin go already. This bit by Dane Cook explains it perfectly… link to youtu.be
