James Harden had encouraging news for Sixers fans as the team wrapped up its training camp, writes Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Harden put up decent numbers after being acquired from the Nets in February, but he was obviously lacking the explosiveness that made him a perennial MVP candidate in Houston. Harden, who blamed a hamstring injury for slowing him down last season, responded, “It’s getting there” when asked about his current condition.
“We’re playing with a full training camp,” he said. “So there’s times and periods that you have dead legs or rough legs. But those are the times when you’ve just got to push through it, those character things like that.”
The Sixers will need a return of vintage Harden to be contenders in a rugged Eastern Conference. He welcomes the opportunity of a full preseason to learn the team’s system after having a crash course in 21 games after the trade. Harden is accomplished as both a scorer and passer, and he’s figuring out the best ways to bring both skills to the Sixers.
“But now, it’s a little bit more different,” he said. “Different because of the time (this summer) I had off to prepare and get my mind and my body right. And it’s just an opportunity with the new people that we have. And, honestly, just the communication with myself and (coach Doc Rivers) and Joel (Embiid) to know when it’s time for me to be aggressive and for Joel to be aggressive.”
There’s more from Philadelphia:
- Rivers had little to say about Ben Simmons, who is expected to make his Nets debut tonight in a preseason game against the Sixers, Pompey states in a separate story. Simmons hasn’t played since Philadelphia was eliminated in the 2021 playoffs, and he had a bitter public battle with the organization before being traded to Brooklyn. “We’re focused on the guys that want to be a Philadelphia 76er,” Rivers said when asked about facing Simmons. “We’re not going to focus on anyone that doesn’t want to be one.”
- Rivers plans to hold out at least three of his starters for tonight’s game, Pompey adds in another piece.
- One of the focuses in training camp was becoming more aggressive defensively, per Gina Mizell of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Joel Embiid has said he wants the Sixers to be the league’s best defensive team, and the offseason additions of P.J. Tucker, De’Anthony Melton, Montrezl Harrell and Danuel House were all made with defense in mind. “I know what it takes to get it done on a nightly basis in the league [and] playoffs,” Tucker said. “It’s tough and it comes down, a lot of times, to communication when plays break down on defense. You’ve got to make stuff happen, and it’s by communication. … You set those expectations right now in the preseason.”
That was the second-coldest reaction Doc Rivers has ever had to a man named Simmions in his entire life.
I wonder what Mike Fratello would have said in May of 89 after Doc & the Hawks got bounced in rd1 by an inferior Bucks team, if reporters would have asked him if he thought he could win a title with his current pg. He obv would have been right to say no as Doc had just been outplayed by Jay Humphries & failed to get his team to the 2nd rd even playing with 2 HOFs (Nique/Moses) & another all-star (Theus). I highly doubt the Czar woulda thrown his pg under the bus like Doc did to Ben tho. And Doc was clearly wrong too. Ben is very capable of leading a team to the title. Doc just set up the perfect avenue for it to happen extremely soon too
Clearly wrong? Ben hasn’t even played a game since leaving!
Wrong for thinking this elite talent with elite size/agility/bball iq might not be capable of winning a title at pg & wrong for not publicly backing your franchise player when he’s become a target for the media. So, YES! CLEARLY WRONG!
Please!!! Simmons has been a pampered prima donna since before he stepped on a college basketball court. The man bought a mansion in LA, requested a trade to an LA team, tried to sit out thinking he’d get paid, then when he didn’t he came up with mental health boo-boos, wouldn’t share his mental health records (b/c there probably were none) with the team… Ben deserves every bit of criticism he gets.
Wrong. You need to be on the court at crunch time friend to lead a team. Simmons sits at crunch time because he cannot hit a free throw. Simmons is afraid of the big moment. Stars want to hoop with joel not Simmons. Get your facts correct. Watch game and let your bias go.
Technically, if the nets win a title it won’t be Simmons running the point…just sayin
“It’s getting there”? Doesn’t sound like good news at all to me seeing as I would have figures it would be “getting there” months ago.
Philadelphia 76ers are about to have a great season. I’m predicting them to finish 1st out East. I just don’t think they going to be great come playoff time.
Doc Rivers don’t coach good in the playoffs.
Joel Embiid or James Harden don’t play good in the playoffs.
They built for the regular season.
Doc Rivers most overrated coach.
James Harden most overrated player.
This team made for each other.
Embiid & Harden have been historically great in the playoffs, where have you been lol?
someone doesn’t watch basketball
This is not a Rockets Harden
It means he would be championship player in East
Sample size corrects you friend.
Ridiculous comment and not thought out.
As a Clippers fan I love the Doc based on prior affiliation, but sorry folks, from a coaching perspective: Ty Lue > The Doc. I know it, and you know it……
Embiid – Harrell – Bassey
Tucker – Niang – Reed
Tobias – House – Korkmaz
Harden – Thybulle – Joe – Springer
Maxey – Melton – Queen – Shake
17 Spots. Gotta make another move. Korkmaz (5M), Thybulle (4.3M), Springer (2.1M), Shake (1.9M), Bassey (1.5M), Reed (1.7M) all expendable. Thybulle is the only “asset” tho. Is he ever going to develop into a 3-point shooter? I’d rather grab a known quantity.
Need a 3 & D
Kennard G (14.4M) – 44% 113 DRtg – 5 for 1 3 team
Clarkson G (13.3M) – 31% 113 DRtg – 4 for 1 3 team
Oubre SF (12.6M) – 34% 115 DRtg – 4 for 1 3 team
J Rich G/F (12.1M) – 44% 114 DRtg 4 for 1 3 team
Crowder F/C (10.1M) – 34% 105 DRtg 3 for 1 3 Team
Bullock G/F (10M) 36% 112 DRtg 3 for 1 3 team
Burks G (10M) – 40% 110 DRtg 3 for 1 3 team
Shamet G (9.5M) – 36% 112 DRtg 2 for 1
Rudy Gay F (6.1M) – 34% 110 DRtg 2 for 1
If you could slide a pure shooter like Kennard in there or a pure scorer like Clarkson, that second unit is pretty nice. J Rich was here before but he was asked to start, but this would be a different role. All of these guys have experience as reserve players now and all have been productive.
Harrell…defense?!
Yes I came down here to make the exact same comment lol
