The Sixers have exercised the fourth-year contract option for starting guard Tyrese Maxey for the 2023/24 season, according to a team press release. They’ve done the same on the the third-year option for Jaden Springer.
Maxey, one of the league’s top young point men, will make $4,343,920 next season. He was the 21st pick of the 2020 draft.
Maxey is one of the league’s biggest bargains right now. He’ll be eligible for a rookie scale extension next offseason.
Springer, the No. 28 selection of the 2021 draft, has only appeared in four NBA games, including two this season. He played 19 games for the G League Delaware Blue Coats last season. The 20-year-old guard will take in $2,226,240 next season.
I woulda passed on Springer. He looked like G-League fodder in Summer League
Indeed. They would have kept more flexibility if they didnt pick up the option on Springer.
It’s not like he would have gotten much more money as a restricted free agent in the offseason.
It makes perfect sense. He only turned 20 a month ago, he spends the year playing g league, then see if he can crack the rotation next year (there is not a spot for him now outside of garbage minutes)…if he does great slide him in next year, if not he becomes salary fodder next year for above the vet minimum. From a roster and team construction standpoint keeping salary cap in mind, this was the right move.
Sixers need to extend maxey IMMEDIATELY!
If the Sixers could only keep one player on the team, I would want it to be Maxey. Dude is a sparkplug and a star in the making.
