Warriors general manager Bob Myers “doesn’t think” Draymond Green will be suspended by the team for punching Jordan Poole during Wednesday’s practice, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter link). Myers said Green apologized to the team on Thursday morning and his punishment will be handled internally (Twitter link via Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic).
As ESPN’s Bobby Marks tweets, Green was likely penalized for “conduct detrimental to the team,” with the maximum fine being $50K.
Myers discussed a number of topics related Green, Poole, and the incident (All Twitter links courtesy of Mark Medina of NBA.com):
- On Green: “He’s been over that line. But he always comes back. He’s a unique guy. He helps us win.” Myers added that he has “confidence that (the altercation) won’t erode the fabric of our team.”
- Myers said he doesn’t believe the incident occurred due to tension with the two players’ extensions looming, having been told that the dialogue leading up to the altercation was “not anything more than normal bickering in a scrimmage.” He also said he’s having “ongoing” discussions with Poole’s agents about an extension, and the incident wouldn’t impact the talks with either player.
- Green left the facility after apologizing and didn’t practice, but head coach Steve Kerr said he’ll rejoin the team on Saturday (Twitter link via ESPN’s Kendra Andrews).
- Myers said the team has had its best preseason “vibe” during his tenure, and contract situations aren’t affecting team morale. Kerr refuted a report stating that Poole may have been the cause of some tension. “Someone put out there that Jordan had an attitude during camp — that couldn’t be further from the truth,” Kerr said, according to Andrews (via Twitter).
Draymond is on the Mt Rushmore or the most unlikeable athletes.
Who else is on it? AJ Pierzynski? Matt Barnes? Matthew Barnaby? Sean Avery?
So many to choose from. If I had to pick I’d go with Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds, O.J. Simpson and Michael Vick.
No Brett Farve? Roger Clemens and Mark McGwire can go on that list too.
Personally I don’t have McGwire on my list. Bonds is on my list for being t–twaffle not for PEDs. Favre barely misses the cut as there can only be 4 on a Mt. Rushmore. Clemens is in the top 10, once again for being a turd, not PEDs.
I forgot Ryan Braun should be on that list. After he lied about steroids and made rude remarks about the tester. Should have been suspended for life but got that 1 test dismissed on a lie.
Rae Carruth?
Bill Laimbeer, Grayson Allen, Roger Clemens.
Pat “Smoke & Mirrors” Beverly
Excellent list, Gary.
LeBron.
Mine has to be Grayson Allen, Laimbeer, Beverly, and Kyrie.
connor mcgregor
I love him, but I’m a Warriors fan
Bob Meyers damage control. Hopefully this doesn’t fester.
Just wish Draymond would stop being such a loose cannon even as he becomes one of the older players in the league. It’s a shame he acts like this, it doesnt do anything other than create non-basketball content talking points about absolutely nothing.
It’s spelled Myers
Thank you for the spelling correction, hero.
There are not too many players Iggy would describe as a “character” guy. Poole worked the hardest and have had the greatest attitude. He’s a team guy and has shown to have tate star like clutch qualities, and there is no way Warriors are going to let him walk. Let’s not forget that Curry was almost traded away early in his career.
I have a strong feeling Green is walking. Watch how LeBron convinces the Lakers Green will put them over the top. No way GSW should give him a max contract but LA will and regret it when him and AD share the injury list.
You can’t seriously be comparing Poole to Curry. Any thoughts trading Curry came from a completely different place.
Curry wasn’t the Steph we know now back then. He was very much in trade discussions in his first couple of years
@lionel I agree. Curry has improved a lot. But, Curry could shoot the moment he stepped on the court. Poole didn’t start shooting until he was sent down. Curry had bad ankles. And with his defense, Curry and Ellis couldn’t be on the floor at the same time. Curry has really worked on his defense.
What’s not to like about home grown young talent who plays his heart out and can score from everywhere on court? Dont forget Curry didnt make his first all star team until 2014 after getting drafted in 2009. And Curry played 3 yrs in college while Poole played only 2 yrs in college. Point is Poole is still very young but has shown star like qualities and he embodies Warrior culture. At some point, we need to have new generation of home grown stars.
@michol What Warriors culture are you talking about? What homegrown talent are you talking about? You seem to be confused. Ever hear of Rick Barry.
You;re not aware of Warriors culture? FYI, the result has been a dynasty.
This is just Draymond being immature, yet again. He’s too old to be doing stuff like this, but its what Lebron wants, so…
Jordan Poole will be a forever Warrior, he’s a Splash Brother, he ain’t leaving.
Despite what all forever loser teams and fans of them chime in, its always Rings > everything, if you disagree you end up being KD.
He needs to retire immediately. This is at least is 3rd violent offense, There is no place in the NBA for this kind of violence, all 3 times against people of color.
Dray keeps it 100
-SagaNasty
Can’t have this kind of thing in the NBA. Violence against coworkers is not acceptable. This is not what the league is about
It is also possible this wasn’t entirely personal but there was some general tension in the locker room and Draymond was the only one with the spine to call Poole out on it. Same as he did with Durant. Team defense.
If Warriors keep Draymond,
Trade idea
Poole to Knicks for Cam Reddish and 2 Knicks unprotected future Firsts
Knicks are on win-now mode
Warriors are on rebuild mode, needs a lot of unprotected draft picks from the bad teams and hope for the lucky on first overall picks
Place RJ at small forward
If a team is planning to win this season = win now mode = Lakers = Knicks
If a team has tons of good first round rookie contracts = rebuild mode. = Warriors
Dude. Learn a few things. The Knicks are not close to winning anything. Rebuild mode. The Warriors have won and are still rebuilding. The Warriors have no reason to tank.
Meyers is a buffoon. Warriors fans are behind Jordan and are disgusted with Green by an overwhelming margin. Now that the video is out the clowns managing the organization are screaming investigation while eviscerating their credibility. If I’m Jordan I want to get the f***k out!
