OCTOBER 16, 1:06pm: The Warriors have officially signed Poole to his four-year extension, the team announced today in a press release.
As we detailed in a separate story, Golden State also extended Wiggins for four years after reaching a deal with Poole.
OCTOBER 15, 2:14pm: The Warriors and Poole have now reached an agreement on the extension, reports Wojnarowski (via Twitter).
The four-year extension will include $123MM in guaranteed money, with an additional $17MM available via incentives, reports Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
OCTOBER 15, 10:51am: The Warriors are finalizing a four-year rookie scale extension with guard Jordan Poole, agents Drew Morrison and Austin Brown of CAA Sports tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link). The deal will be worth $140MM, according to Wojnarowski, who says the two sides are completing the final details and are expected to have a formal agreement soon.
Given that the $140MM figure is coming from Poole’s representatives, it’s possible that not all of that money is fully guaranteed and that a portion of it is only attainable through incentives. Still, it looks like it will be the biggest rookie scale extension signed this year outside of the maximum-salary deals completed by Ja Morant, Darius Garland, and Zion Williamson.
Poole’s huge new contract agreement comes on the heels of a breakout season, as he averaged 18.5 PPG, 4.0 APG, and 3.4 RPG on .448/.364/.925 shooting in 76 games (30.0 MPG) for the eventual champions.
The 23-year-old played an important role in Golden State’s title run, increasing his shooting percentages to .508/.391/.915 in 22 playoff contests (27.5 MPG) and averaging 17.0 PPG.
Poole was one of three members of the Warriors’ championship rotation who was extension-eligible and entering a potential contract year this fall. He was viewed as the team’s top priority ahead of fellow extension candidates Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins.
A practice incident earlier this month that saw Green punch Poole seemed to add more urgency to the Warriors’ desire to get an extension done, since they wanted to affirm their commitment to Poole following that altercation, rather than having his contract situation hanging over his head all season.
Even if Poole earns a full $140MM over the next four years, that figure will fall just short of what a maximum-salary contract would’ve been worth as a restricted free agent next summer, based on the NBA’s latest salary cap forecast. As our max projections show, using a $134MM cap estimate, Poole would’ve been eligible for a four-year max worth about $150MM with the Warriors or approximately $144MM if he were to sign with another team.
It’s unclear what sort of impact Poole’s extension will have on Golden State’s extension negotiations with Wiggins and Green. Joe Lacob and the ownership group have paid record-setting amounts on player salaries and luxury tax penalties for the current roster, but the team has suggested there’s a ceiling on what ownership is prepared to spend going forward. Lucrative new contracts for both Wiggins and Green may push the cost of the Warriors’ roster beyond that ceiling.
Poole will be the seventh player to sign a rookie scale extension in 2022, joining Morant, Garland, Williamson, Tyler Herro, RJ Barrett, and Keldon Johnson. Seventeen players remain eligible to sign rookie scale extensions before Monday’s deadline.
Ayton gets 4 year max at $133 million
Feels like this is an overpay. I was expecting similar to Herro’s contact
Poole clears Herro though? Where’s Herro’s ring+multiple NBA Finals buzzer beaters?
Details:
$123 million contract extension.
The deal includes another $17 million in incentives.
What has Herro done in the playoffs?
Jordan Poole just got a bag!!! Money like that he’s going to be the starting SG.
Herro got 120 plus incentives and he got 123 plus incentives. Kind of depends on how attainable they are
LETS GO!!! SPLASH BROS ARE OFFICIALLY A TRIO NOW!!!
Poole is worth every last penny of that!
Holy overpay Batman
wrong, cap…..hes a star player, getting better every year. its the going rate
Bit off topic but maybe not
Heard on the radio the other day GSW has the most expensive steak per oz in the USA at 172$ for a 8 ounce filet at their restaurant inside the arena
Lacob spends the money on his team that fans spend on steaks. Previous owners didn’t. You watch 4 hall of famers. It’s worth the ticket. I understand that you were just stating a fact and I did not know that so thanks but if someone goes to Chase to eat a good steak they can afford it.
I don’t think he’s a star player yet. He is the future of the franchise being only 22 so by the end of the contract he’ll be worth the $35 million IF he continues to progress the way he has.
Multiple buzzer beaters in the NBA Finals means he IS a star player, sorry.
Yet somehow he does not start.
Star? NBA stars do not start now?
Huge overpay. Better hope he grows into this deal or it could be an albatross.
Well, Ginobli was a star that didn’t start. He’s the exception though and he was a Hall Of Famer. Poole isn’t in his tier though.
Starting games???? That literally does not matter at all!! Looney started like 50 games last year while averaging 15 MPG!! He’d play the first 7 minutes then 5 more…is that a “star” to you? Not Poole, who averages 30 MPG all season long?
Its top 5 minutes played that actually matters, not starting games – you clearly have no idea how to win in the NBA by making this statement. Poole is 100% not even close to an “overpay” you are just a clueless, mindless, GSW hater troll who is sick of your fave team losing to them.
No shot you are over 15 years old talking utter garbage with such confidence like this lmaooo “an albatross” its a 4 year deal to a 23 year old with a team full of HOFers, lmao you just are saying word salad stuff that doesnt even make sense!
thank you, UK!!!!!
I agree CF overpay but it’s hard to call anything an albatross with GSW with as many bird rights they hold –
They make 3-400 mill more in profit than the avg team per year. When you take a deeper dive into their financials it’s pretty crazy- Gotta commend them for putting a lot of the money back on the court. I can’t help but wonder if taking that punch landed an extra 10 milll for good faith tho today –
I viewed Poole a lot closer to 25 per than 35 but that 10 mill as I stated above might only feel like 1~2 extra mill to a different team, one that doesn’t sell 172$ steaks I presume on cite
fair assessment this time cap. you’re better when you dont spew random hate. the salary rules apply equally for all teams in all markets. big YES..that the punch got him more bank.
You must be on crank! Huge overpay for a non starter who treats defense like he does Draymonds right hook,no response. Crippling luxury tax wise and handcuffed future signings.
its funny how all the dub haters are sitting around hoping…..wishing on a rainbow, that the dynasty ends soon. they’re the champs! the next generation looks AMAZING as well. im sorry whatever team y’all are into isn’t run as well, hang in there tho! it took me 4 decades of poop to enjoy the dynasty now
They look decent but they still need that transcendant player like Curry, Poole, Kuminga or Wiseman ain’t it.
He was knocked out.
Get injured. Has all the talent. But his injury history doesn’t make him as valuable. If he stays healthy Miami get a deal
I agree. This is an overpay. I also agree though, that this is the going rate.
Fans are the one’s who get screwed because seeing a game live in crazy expensive.
Where does ESPN get the money to pay for the TV contracts???? It’s called “carriage” fees. Comcast for example, and every other cable provider, pays ESPN $7.64 for every subscriber regardless of whether or not they watch or not. ESPN2 is about half of that. By far the most expensive in cable. Most channels only cost pennies.
Since people are cutting the cord from cable. ESPN/Disney now has to force everybody on to their streaming package to make up lost fees with the hope that it is still profitable in the future. At some point, the cost of streaming will explode to cover cost of overpriced TV contracts.
ESPN does a huge OVERPAY on TV contracts because they will cease to exist without having “live” sports.
The sky is the limit with Poole. Well deserving. Go Warriors!!!
Draymond Green knows he is out the door at the end of the year.
He can still opt in. If they repeat, why wouldn’t he?
Draymond Green can opt in his contract next season . so technically he still can stays with warriors unless he get traded to another team .No reason for him to opt out unless he got other offers which attracts him
ESPN
Irving and Draymond will be Lakers next summer
Lakers want Wemby also
Green wants a max contract and made it known to GSW. Being 33 Y O after this season no way GSW can give him a max deal. they have too much money already with Curry’s max deal. Green will opt out because his family knows this is his last big pay day. LeBron already been recruiting him to LA. They lose Westbrook then they can sign Green.
Money Green wants money
He has past his prime 2 years before
Trade away Money today
So you still haven’t learned anything?
Again, teams trying to repeat don’t EVER trade their best playmaker and defender.
Also why trade Green now? You are not going to get a better defender and the warriors have so many young players needing playing time you can’t improve. Play out the season and if Green walks he walks.
If he gets hurt he has to opt in. They reality is your pushing this to the trade deadline most likely but if he gets hurt you lose all your value. Let him playna month or two. Then you move him. Sad yes but he’s not going to age well in this league for what he does.
sillivan is …..well, ill be nice
Guarantee that he will be gone before the end of the season. Warriors have spoken loud and clear that both Wiggins and Poole are the priorities, and Green’s ego wont be able to last unfortunately.
I guarantee he won’t be gone before the end of the season. He’s their best playmaker and defensive player in a title defense year, despite his inability to control himself.
Poole can thank Draymond for effectively being the “closer” in the contract negotiations.
Poole made extra $10M because of Draymond. :)
Well, it looks like regular commenter Gary who posted endlessly that the Warriors would let him become a RFA will be the one eating some crow…
Big time !!!!!!
NBA is OK2, you made the correct call. Nice job.
We will see in a couple of years (with the new TV contract and cap), and how it affects signing other players if this looks smart or stupid in hindsight.
I’m keeping quiet. I obviously don’t know what I’m talking about.
But I’m surprised by this in a big way. The only thing I can think of is that the cap will be rising, just as you suggest, over the next couple of years and this will be a bargain in year three and four? But wow I would have bet the farm and then lost it with this.
How dare you display any sort of humility on this board. Only arrogant homers on here, Gary.
That being said, Lakers are going 82-0.
Haha, don’t be fooled by one post. I’m still an arrogant Homer lol.
But currently I’m an arrogant Homer who has been shown my place here today. I seriously can’t believe the Warriors are doing this but they’re the ones signing the checks and not me and they’ve got a lot of guys behind this decision so they know what they’re doing. They run businesses and handle millions of dollars every day. They obviously know what they’re doing, even here with this new contract.
Gary, not much more than Herro – $123 million contract extension confirmed.
The deal includes another $17 million in incentives.
As underdogs against the spread right?
It was really a no brainer because he is a tradable asset. W’s can move him anytime they want to…. Besides, they want Poole to be happy so they can win another title.
Let’s see how they going to pay wiggins moody wiseman kuminga and green.
Seems that this season will be the “last dance” of warriors championship run with the “trio”
Don’t think warriors will afford to keep either green or wiggins
Even curry’s 1st contract extension was not that much amount of money despite he is shooting lights out
And they going to pay so much for a player who currently plays 6th men in the rotation
Good luck.
Well, considering that you were wrong about this, maybe you’ll be wrong about what the team will do about the others you mention.
Wiggins doesn’t want to go anywhere, and he’s already set for life with the money he’s made already.
Green will probably decide to opt in, since it’s unlikely there’s much of a market for him.
So u mean a player of his caliber like wiggins who can defend opposing team best player
who have a constant track record have healthy body and give consistence points may choose to take lesser then a guy who only plays 6th men in the team and less efficient in defense ?
A player with wiggins caliber can easily fetch 40m per year and above in the current open market easily i am sure there will be teams willing to pay him even more to get him.
Even he was to stay with warriors he shouldnot be be taking less then poole that’s my personal take.
And i sincerely wish warriors to keep the other 3 cores who can play more 2 way then him
Wiggins, Kerr and Draymond are the only “maybes” who won’t be on the Warriors the rest of their entire careers. Everyone else is staying long term. Why do you think otherwise?
Seriously, why do people like you continue to pocket watch, when its been proven it doesn’t matter, there is no salary cap here, and if anything, Lacob is going to get the NBA to make it easier for players to stay with their draft team if they want to in the upcoming year or two? You are wasting everyones time with this useless discourse!!!
Wiggins wants to leave GSW, he’s said it over and over. He wants to be a star on a bad team with no pressure because he’s not a true dog. He goes missing when the pressure is on. Stop stanning this loser, he should have never even been on GSW in the first place.
Andrew Wiggins = Finals Curry Gravity Merchant, nothing more, nothing less. 2022 Curry would have made 2016 or 2022 Harrison Barnes look that good in the playoffs, easily. When you give Wiggins credit for anything, you disrespect Curry, who is the reason why Wiggins is doing anything good.
Wiggins has said the opposite. He said he loves playing for the warriors. Only thing it will come down to is money if he stays or leaves. He is not getting max money. I have a feeling he will take less money to stay on GSW because he has never been happier playing in the NBA.
He has said he hates the Warriors for making him get immunized. Google it.
That’s another lie. Here’s what he actually said (note there’s zero about “hating the Warriors, who obviously didn’t make the law that applied in his case):
“I still wish I didn’t get it, to be honest with you. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I did it, and you know, I was an All-Star this year, and a champion. So that was the good part, just not missing out on the year, best year of my career. But for my body, I just don’t like putting all that stuff in my body. So I didn’t like that, and I didn’t like that it wasn’t my choice, you know? I didn’t like that. It was either get this, or don’t play.”
“I would love to stay here,” Wiggins said at the Warriors’ exit interviews in June. “Being here, this is top-notch. The way they treat the players … we’re all one big family. I feel like a lot of places may say that, but they show it through their actions.”
@ A’sfan:
“Wiggins wants to leave GSW, he’s said it over and over.”
Talk is cheap – please post a link to where he’s ever said anything remotely similar to that false claim.
Totally agree, no green,no Wiggins no title. No poole, yawning.
Yet the fact is, they still have all 3 players.
OVERRATED ……
He cant start for half the NBA teams.
Don’t see how you keep Wiggins n Green. Don’t see Warriors in Finals this yr. That will affect Pooles outlook on team. Total system guy.
Not better than or more important than Wiseman, Kuminga, Wiseman, Moody, Looney. All should be the real future of this team.
Well, Richard Jefferson said last night that the Warriors are the title favorites.
I’ll take his opinion over yours.
I think Its rather silly for anyone to pick a favorite before the season starts unless youre gambling or getting paid to do do. There are about 8 teams that could win depending on injuries…trades…buyouts etc.
Ofc there are many legit contenders and rosters can change, but it’s not really silly to pick a start of the season favorite based on if all teams are healthy, which team currently has the best combination of talent, chemistry, and intangibles.
I am down with “currently” guessing which team is gonna win.
But catch me in April I wouldn’t tell anyone who was gonna be the best team in the NBA before then. Cuz you don’t know.
If you honestly think any other team other than the Warriors are the best team in the NBA to start the season, you literally have zero analysis skills at all and need to watch more games, and do less talking.
Like, GSW top 12 players are beating EVERYONE’s top 12. Only Curry’s health stands in the way of chip number 5 this year, and if you cant EASILY see that then what game are you even watching? You need to watch more GSW games to get it….
Calm down, buddy. Take a breath.
Fully agree. if u watch the pre-season games he can’t even lead the 2nd unit
while Divincenzo can lead the unit plays so well easily and have good chemistry with james wiseman .
He only plays great with the main team or either curry or thompson where the defense is not focus on him too much.
Even moody plays better then him when given similar task .
@ Zenn
Please.
I guess you’re not clear on the fact that preseason games don’t count. Here’s last season’s stats for comparison:
Poole 18.5 ppg 3,4 rpg 4.0 apg PER 16.2
Donte 9.0 ppg 4.0 rpg 2.8 apg PER 11.3
Donte did not look very good last night. Almost all of the warrior players shot very poorly last night. Poole just needs to work on his defense his offense game is already at elite level.
@ARC 2 Who cares? Its preseason, they just won the title, this is their mini-“hangover” and Im very glad we aren’t taking these preseason games too seriously. Donte isn’t even supposed to be a regular, what are we even doing here?
The comment is in response to Donte being better than Poole on the second unit. Donte is just a 2nd unit player for GSW. He is not the first guy you bring on the bench like Poole.
Jordan Poole averaged the 3rd-most MPG on GSW last year, take all this utter garbage talk about “starting games is important” and stick it, its literally the least important part of the game.
Looney resigned last year. Wiseman will be the player they need to resign in 2 years. Klay contract will be much lower.
Al…my man! im SO glad you said all that! coming from you, and your team? lets me know im doing just fine by the bay. the dubs are 100%intact this season, and I go 1 season at a time. after we double down, the dynamic of the dynasty will change yet again. but…….not right now its not. opening night…ring night…banner night, is Tuesday, if you want to dream a little…tune in!
Excellent points made by someone who actually knows the game. A 6th man who only thrives in a system and avoids defense at all costs. Albatross contract.
innot, nba defensive ratings from last season show Poole 13th ranked for players playing minimum 60 games. Its on the nba site. he’s ranked right between Wiggins and Chris Paul. I dont know the game but I am able to read stats. Try it, you might learn something…as long as you’re not on crank as you accused Larry Brown.
I seriously can’t even believe this. I was so far off base I thought this would never ever happen, and here we are, it happens. Big shout out to NBA is OK2, who called this correctly all along.
But, these guys are getting paid to do what they do so the guy signing the checks seems to roll with the decision and here we go. Let’s defend the title and worry about salaries and contracts for The Other Guys later. Okay then. Get ready for $18 beers and $12 hot dogs.
Why are we keep forgetting W’s had the best record in nba with Poole starting over Klay, and Poole did great when Curry was hurt in 2nd half? He was one of the big reasons why W’s won last yr.
Not that much of an overpay for anyone saying that. He’s better than Herro and Herros deal was gonna be the starting point. Plus this contract look like nothing once the new tv deal comes through
How do you figure he’s better than Herro? Honestly curious
See his playoff numbers!
Hey Philliesfan215….good call, finally a sensible, knowledgeable post in this thread…you know ball….
Herro is better
Zero rings = not better
These contracts have gotten out of control these past 5 years. Average role players get over 20 million a year. Absolutely pathetic
Even though this may not even matter because the Warriors are so loaded $$ but I’m still trying to figure out the strategy salary-wise. Might be a waste of time but I’m sure they do think about it.
Poole’s salary increase won’t take effect until NEXT season. Nothing really changes for this coming season and the title defense is in full effect.
So next season, 23-24, Wiggins is off the books and Poole’s new contract slides in that slot. Makes sense. Also Draymond Green has the option so he’s either A) out, B) gets a new 3 year deal, or C) opts-in the one year contract, which of course is the least likely. So far so good. The only question really is what happens with Wiggins. Re-sign at a slight discount?
The next season 24-25 Klay’s money comes off the books at age 34 or 35. Does he take a HomeTown discount or does he go to the Lakers to shoot threes from the corner? In either case that 40 million comes off the books. That’ll pay for the Wiseman extension.
Well I guess looking at it this way, yes the payroll increases, but at least there’s a guy or two who either leaves or takes a discount and they can justify subbing in a proven 23-year-old at that salary. Okay sounds good to me. I’m not signing the checks.
Thinking this through, the bottom line is that they are choosing Jordan Poole over Andrew Wiggins. Then either Andrew Wiggins takes a discount and Draymond Green leaves, or Green stays and Wiggins leaves (28 mil for either guy.) It all works out in the end. Then Thompson’s money becomes James wiseman’s money.
Sorry for the long post.. just trying to think this through because it has to be on their minds.
They gotta ton of bird rights Gary , if they didn’t I agree this could come back and bite them but they do so all this really does is dent (small one) to Lacobs pocketbook
Expect a record breaking number next year from this payroll, and really it should be when taking in all the numbers that come in – Wish I could track down the Mychal Thompson interview where it goes into how much GSW takes in per year relative to the rest of the league, it’s fascinating
I hear you but it shouldn’t be a record-breaking number too much except for a little bit increase.
Jordan Poole takes Wiggins money slot and we just saw that Wiggins is taking Green’s discount money slot. So logic tells me Green is gone. Now if they sign Draymond Green to an extension that would blow me away and hot dogs will be $50 next year.
But it sure looks like each of these new contracts slides into another guy’s slot except for Draymond, who thus leaves.
As far as Klay Thompson, in two years James Wiseman takes that slot because he’s up next, and Klay either goes discount or goes Lakers/Clippers.
Klay and Green are goners. They will have to sign for major discounts. W’s have turned the for the younger generation.
Gary, There’s one thing that could happen that you haven’t considered.
Lacob is pushing hard for a change in the next CBA so players with Bird rights don’t count as much against the cap, because the current system punishes teams that are loyal to the players they draft, develop and extend – and obviously if that were to happen the fans of all teams would benefit from having less of their rising stars departing for better money elsewhere.
Warriors command a lot of attention from the league for obvious reasons, so it will be interesting to see if they can get some relief in the next CBA.
Yes your absolutely right, and because perhaps Joe Lacob has heard a little birdie mention that it’ll get passed or agreed upon, he’s starting to sign these guys to extensions?
But on the other hand, if the goal is parity in the NBA and one or two stars per team, I’m not sure if the bird rights/tax relief idea helps the cause?
Now perhaps it does because it prevents super teams and guys coming over and SWITCHING teams? So rather when you draft and develop you are rewarded, or actually not penalized as much, even if you become a super team because it’s homegrown and done the right way? Ok, makes sense.
When guys switch franchises to become super teams that is really tarnishing the image of the nba. But when guys are homegrown and stick around that’s like the old school days where you have a favorite player on your hometown team and he stays his entire career.
Lacob has a reasonable point about how it doesn’t make sense to have a system that punishes teams that do a good job in drafting and developing players, but how effective he can be in getting buy-in from enough others is unknown.
These 2 signings don’t change anything for the coming season, and given how both players are eminently tradeable, the Warriors now have more flexibility if they decide that they have to cut salary next season.
It was Warriors plan all along to extend Poole and Wiggins. It’s not only about having assets, but gives the team the best chance to repeat this season. You never want to have unnecessary distraction. Warriors also regarded Green highly, but he just wasnt a priority this offseason because he still had 2 yrs left for over $50M. They wanted to wait til next offseason, but it was Green who made noise with his contract situation and caused a major distraction with Poole incident. Unfortunately, Green is a time bomb who craves attention above team’s interest.
NBA is Ok 2- Agree a ton on what your saying but Id build a stipulation that the players have to be drafted
A lot of Bird rights come from trades still and as you know theres a ton of trades in the NBA- I wouldn’t allow those to be eligible like Wiggins ex
In an effort to improve their training facilities for the benefit of their current players as well as to enhance the team’s ability to appeal to potential free agent players, the Warriors have announced that they have……………….
EXTENDED THEIR POOLE !!
