If the Warriors want to sign Jordan Poole to a rookie scale extension before the October 17 deadline, it will likely require a baseline offer of $120MM over four years, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, who said during an appearance on the HoopsHype podcast that Tyler Herro‘s deal with Miami raised the bar for Golden State and Poole.
Slater, who believes the two sides will get something done in the coming days, suggests that the incident with Draymond Green last week might’ve create some additional urgency on the Warriors’ side, since they won’t want Poole’s contract situation hanging over his head all year after what happened with Green.
Slater also observes that there are some teams who project to have cap room next year that could realistically offer Poole a maximum-salary offer sheet. In Slater’s view, the Magic and Spurs are among the rebuilding teams who could use a backcourt scorer like Poole and would have the financial flexibility to make life difficult for the Warriors if the 23-year-old makes it to restricted free agency.
Here’s more out of Golden State:
- The Warriors appear to be in “wait-and-see” mode on potential extensions for Green and Klay Thompson, says Slater. There’s no real urgency on the Thompson front because he’s under contract for two more guaranteed seasons. Green can become a free agent next summer, but the Warriors will likely want to see how this season plays out to get a sense of how he regains the team’s trust, what his market will be like, and whether he’ll be able to top his $27.6MM player option.
- Andrew Wiggins is also extension-eligible, and Slater believes the Warriors would be interested in exploring a new deal if the former No. 1 pick is willing to take a slight pay cut (perhaps from his current $33.6MM into the 20s). But it’s unclear whether Wiggins would consider that as he comes off his best NBA season.
- Slater believes Moses Moody is a better bet than Jonathan Kuminga or Patrick Baldwin Jr. to step into a rotation role immediately this season, since he’s a good fit for a three-and-D spot. While the Warriors like Baldwin’s long-term potential, Slater expects him to spend a lot of time in the G League as a rookie.
- The Warriors allowed their veterans to take on a major role in the handling of the Green/Poole altercation last week, according to Slater, who points to Stephen Curry, Kevon Looney, and Andre Iguodala as players who were very involved. “The players are of the belief that it’s better for the team to bring Draymond back in now,” Slater said.
Moody and Kuminga are going to dominate the league this season, Baldwin is likely headed to the G League for that “Jordan Poole special sauce” and he’ll come back aces.
The only thing Kuminga is likely to “dominate” this season is the seat on the bench next to Iguodala.
Jonathan Kuminga needs work that’s for sure. But he’s got the tools and hopefully he supplies what they need in spurts.
I don’t see Poole being more valuable than Wiggins at this point in the year. Green is gone at the end of the year. Its going to be a tough decision with so much young talent on GSW on who to keep and who to resign.
Poole is part of the core future for the Warriors. Wiggins was amazing last season. Green is part of a needed veteran side as Curry and Thompson are. If management can figure out a way to keep them together then the future is like their past very successful…
Keep the band together this year for one more run. Next summer Jordan Poole gone, Draymond Green gone, Andrew Wiggins gone umless he takes discount. Broken record.
The thing with most predictions. They are generally wrong. No matter how hard you try. Things generally change.
G74, very true. But I’m starting to read more and more that lean towards what I’ve been saying. Slater agrees it’s going to take Tyler hero money to get Poole early. Not going to happen.
They say above Wiggins stays only if he takes a discount.
By now everyone knows Green is gone this summer.
You are basing your opinion on some writer? How often are they wrong!! Nobody knows what is going to happen. Let it play out.
@Gary
The deadline is Monday. As I’ve said before, I think they extend Poole.
One of us will be eating crow. It’ll definitely be you !! Lol, just kidding.
But seriously, I don’t think it’s even close. Poole wants Tyler hero money and there’s no way Warriors give it to him. They’d rather find a Donte Divincenzo for 5 million than give Jordan Poole 30 plus million.
Gary, Slater also said this:
“It does seem like it’s getting close. Steve Kerr, in a moment of maybe too much transparency as far as the front office might be concerned last night, said in his postgame, ‘There’s a reason Jordan’s in this moment. There’s a reason he was able to handle it’, and then he says ‘And there’s a reason he’s about to sign a big contract extension — pause — hopefully,’” Slater said in The Athletic NBA Show podcast.
“But I do expect a contract extension to happen in the next week. Maybe Jordan is waiting for that to finally speak to us about the entire saga that has been this entire 10-day period for him.”
With divncenzo playing so great. I believe warriors finally found the 6th man they are looking for when curry is resting. If he plays well I believe he won’t cost as much as Poole maybe 10m-20m per year at most. While Ryan Rollins shows more potential then Poole in currently with better defense. Warriors should not spend money to keep Poole. If not it will be harder to keep wiseman kuminga and moody in future. Right now the splash brothers still left at least 2-3 years with them. It’s not logical to pay so much money for a person who plays 6th men in the rotation. Unless the team really don’t mind to pay luxury tax to keep the team going. For the money spend on Poole warriors can easily afford gp2 and divicenzo both person easily with spare change.
Spot on Zenn.
Divencenzo is much better than GP2.
@ Zenn
Why would you believe a rookie from the Mid America conference (which has a negative strength of schedule) is better defensively than Poole who played in the Big Ten (Michigan’s SOS was over +10) and was 5th in defensive win shares in his 2nd season there, and now has 3 years of NBA experience?
@nba Pat Spencer is getting real close to making the Warriors opening day roster. A guy who has basically no collegiate basketball experience is earning way onto the Warriors roster. Your stats mean nothing.
Well I would only beleive in my own eyes and judgement.poole plays artroious during his 1st season. 2nd season was similar until he was thrown to the g league get confidence.however I more concerned on how much it’s worth to pay a 6th men in the league with the team more then his actual worth the open market. Plus future how warriors going to pay moody kuminga and wiseman. If Klay Thompson or Steph going to step down a year a so n he is tasked with more playing time of course it may worth to keep him. Otherwise it’s going to cause more problems in the future for warriors. Well it took 4 sample games so far to see he can’t lead the 2 unit at all .so they have to ask themselves what kind of player he is projected to be? Next time how is he going to lead the team by himself like curry that’s my concern
I guess Klay was too high to care. Same ol’ Klay.
You sound jealous. How does it feel to be so up tight?
I honestly think Andre Igoudala will retire after this season and Draymond Green will leave in free agency.
Andrew Wiggins is the new Andre Igoudala on the Golden State Warriors.
Kuminga Moody and Wiseman will all play their roles but also replace what Draymond Green bring.
Exactly.
Trade Green for Collins.
Trade Klay + JMGreen + for Isaac + Cole Anthony and Moritz Wagner.
Saving of $15 Million or almost $100 Million+ in Luxury Taxes.
Curry, Poole, Wiggins , Collins , Looney
Donte, Cole Anthony, Wagner, Moody, Kuminga, Wiseman
Rollins, PBJ, Isaac, Iggy.
Poole and Wiseman each sign an extension for 4/$120 Million starting at $25.8 Million for next year. Team Salary for 2023/24.
Trade Isaac, the following year or this year to Spurs or Indiana. Or develop him to be what he could have been.
Sillivan?
In the alternative a more balanced trade
Green for John Collins
Okungu + Jalen Johnson to Indiana
Hawks receive Duarte from Indiana
Klay to the Pacers for Hield + 1st 2023 (Cleveland)
Hawks below Luxury Tax
Green and Duarte and Hawks keep Hunter
Pacers receive: Klay, Jalen Johnson & Okungu
Warriors : Hield + Collins + FRP
Indiana can now trade or keep Turner, but have a reasonable starting lineup with Mathurin playing SF (he did that in college)
Warriors
Curry, Poole, Wiggins, Collins, Looney
Donte, Hield, Moody, Kuminga, Wiseman
Rollins, PBJ, JMichael Green, Iggy, Weatherspoon. – $165 Million.
Moody and Wiseman will improve defensively. Collins will make the team even a greater Juggernaut.
Green will be great for the Hawks,
