The Warriors have signed former No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins to a contract extension, according to NBA.com’s official transaction log.
After Wiggins’ surprise extension showed up in the transaction log, his agents Drew Morris and Steven Heumann of CAA Sports confirmed the deal, telling ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Kendra Andrews (Twitter link) that it’s a four-year, $109MM extension.
The deal includes a player option on year four, Wojnarowski adds (via Twitter).
Wiggins, 27, enjoyed perhaps the best year of his career in 2021/22 with the Warriors. Although he fell short of the scoring averages he posted in earlier seasons with the Timberwolves, he earned his first All-Star nod and emerged as a reliable two-way player, making a career-high 39.3% of his three-pointers and handling challenging defensive assignments on the wing.
Wiggins averaged 17.2 PPG, 4.5 RPG, and 2.2 APG in 73 games (31.9 MPG) during the regular season, then played a crucial role in the Warriors’ title run, putting up 16.5 PPG, 7.5 RPG, and 1.8 APG on .469/.333/.646 shooting in 22 playoff contests (34.9 MPG).
Having signed a five-year, maximum-salary rookie scale extension while he was still in Minnesota, Wiggins will earn $33,616,770 this season in the final year of that deal, then take a pay cut on his new extension, which will be worth just over $27MM per year. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic (Twitter link), Wiggins’ salary will dip to about $24.3MM in the first year of his next contract, which begins in 2023/24.
Wiggins’ agreement comes on the heels of Jordan Poole striking a four-year, $123MM+ deal with the Warriors earlier today. Golden State has now made nine-figure commitments to two of its key extension-eligible rotation players in less than 24 hours, further increasing the franchise’s record-setting payroll in the coming years.
With Wiggins and Poole locked up, the future of Draymond Green looms as a major question mark for the Warriors. Although it’s still possible that he’ll remain in Golden State for years to come, Green probably can’t realistically expect to receive a long-term contract that has an average annual value matching or exceeding his $27.6MM option for 2023/24.
If Green picks up that option, the cost of the Warriors’ ’23/24 roster – taking into account both player salaries and luxury tax penalties – is projected to exceed $500MM, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Twitter link).
Bye bye Draymond
I can only give Draymond 4 year $80 million extension
Age 33-37
Go ahead to join Lakers future
I don’t care
@Sillivan
I don’t necessarily think Dray wants to go to LA and I really don’t think LBJ wants him either. What the Lakers need is offense unless they can squeeze is a significant shooter too then I think they pass on him. Great defensive player. High IQ but Drays lack of shooting doesn’t help the Lakers desire to spread the floor so LBJ can do what he does best.
Pick up Green and trade Davis for a couple good shooter maybe still get Kyrie
Yes absolutely this seals it. Happiest he’s ever been so took the discount. Good for him. And rewarded with a cool hundred million. Not too shabby.
Definitely could have got more money elsewhere. Happy he stayed
Most assuredly
Draymond “coattails” green. Hit em with it chuck
Who’s better knockAl. Poole or Brunson?
That’s a hell of a discount. They just gave Poole $123 million and you give Wiggins $109 million.
Poole is younger and has a higher ceiling. Beyond that they would have had to overpay to keep him in the off-season anyway. If they win ring 5 Dray should retire. Easiest solution for everyone
Wiggins is an all star starter
Wiggins was the 2nd best player on a championship team.
I can’t see Poole ever taking on the best perimeter player on the opposing team on a nightly basis.
Wiggins was most certainly NOT the 2nd best player on a championship team. By what metric? You not knowing-ball? He was #5 in Win Shares, a flimsy metric but at least one that exists on basketball-reference. Where’s your proof?
Wiggins was the second most important and impactful player on the warriors in the finals. Way more than Poole. If you don’t realize that then you weren’t watching.
He hasn’t quite got what kind of ball we play in U.S. yet. He thinks 2way means your Bi ……….
Personally I cant believe he would sign that contract.
Let’s see…. we’re cherry picking stats now. Ok, I can do that. The following are in the NBA finals, ya know the most important 6 games the Warriors played last year. Wiggins was 2nd In scoring , 1st in rebounds, 1st in minutes played, 4th in steals, 1st in blocks, 4th in box +/-, and finally most importantly, Wiggins kept Jayson Tatum somewhat in check and carried the team during a pivotal game 5.
Who was your #2 for GSW in the finals?
By being #2 on the team in scoring, leading the team in rebounds, and guarding the opponents’ best player in the Finals.
Not sure how high his ceiling is with the very poor defense. His offense needs to be elite or he needs to become merely subpar on that end
Agreed re easiest solution. When Poole’s raise/extension kicks in (’23-’24), total payroll (owing to Curry, Thompson, Poole, Wiggins) will be crazy (and the related team luxury tax even more so!) If Green were to not retire and instead exercise his ’23-’24 option ($28M?), the punitive luxury tax applicable to that $28M would be astronomical (and trading him (if even possible) would not offer much relief!)
No kidding! Poole also has $17M in possible incentives (total $140M), so the Wiggins difference/discount could even be bigger than the $14M! Wiggins must really love playing for GS!
Because Wiggins contract with Peak shoe brand is believed to be $150+ million
It requires him to sign with Warriors?
Is there simply no limit as to the amount of luxury tax that GS ownership is willing to pay to sign/retain whoever they want?
Correct, now stop pocket watching GSW. Everyone is staying if they want to stay.
pocket watching? just how familiar are you with the NBA luxury tax? it is punitive (sliding scale) to the point that the tax can become many multiples of the incremental salaries involved. In the right circumstances (GSW are now there!), a $30M salary can attract $180M in league luxury tax! Even GSW does not live in a total financial vacuum!
Wrong again
I’m sure LeBron is just shaking his head.
If you include this year Wiggins is getting 143 mil over 5 seasons.
Age 27-32
This is Wiggins last big contract
Andrew Wiggins definitely gave them a hometown discount. It’s a great deal. He’s going to flourish!!!
He’s from Canada
Another great job by the Warriors to keep their championship caliber core together for at least two more years and maybe longer.
Ultimately this is what it’s all about. I thought Wiggins might want to leave but he didn’t, he apparently loves winning titles by doing very little for 75% of a game then caking off Steph Curry and his gravity for some easy open buckets. Great gig if you can get it! As long as it means more titles for Dub Nation, I’m 100% on board. Wiggins+Kerr especially are just infuriating to watch a lot of the time, so, there’s that to deal with along the way.
Your takes are always so off I’m surprised you still post on here
@Assfan
Takes off 75% of the game? So his defense means nothing?
Wow what a deal. $109 mil over 4 years is great for the warriors
He’s like 10% better than Harrison Barnes. Kind of overpaid, probably he’s around $18-20M a year if it came down to actual production.
I heard the $33 million discount 4 days ago
I thought it was speculation
Speculation example
Lakers acquire Draymond, Irving AND 1 overall draft pick in Wemby next summer
You didn’t hear anything.
That’s a lot of Dominoes who don’t have anything to trade the number 1 for. And who would make that deal? The Jazz are tanking for a reason.
I like Suns Bridges 4 year $90 million more than Wiggins contract
wiggins can actually create his own shot.
wiggins is an all star starter
If Bridges had sogned his extension I’m this off season he would gotten 4-$140 million
Great deal for the warriors and I think this officially closes the book on one of the three, probably Draymond most likely.
Perfect Draymond next!
Everyone gunna be so mad when he gets a 4 year max deal lol
You gotta look up “everyone” in the dictionary.
Don’t people just google definitions these days?
Yep, and they find online dictionaries when they do.
I certainly wouldn’t be mad if green signed a max, it’s not my money.
What team is going to sign Green to a 4 year max? Certainly not GSW!
Slugger Green out now?
I would think so. It was either Green or Wiggins taking the hometown discount after Poole signed for 30 million plus. I think Green could be on his way out as he wants to show his rings are not just because of Steph.., or he wants to show that The Warriors can’t win without him Etc.
Draymond won’t win a ring in Detroit. But I think he would go home. And use that as motivation. But he’s not in GS after this year so they should trade him at the deadline
@Randy
Unless the injury bug hits so bad they’re not in contention, there’s no way they trade him this season since they’re trying to repeat.
seems like GS has made their statement. i feel like wiggins is easier to replace than draymon in the long run but i expect trade talk to pick up soon. definitely by the deadline
You’re right on all that but I think they go the season intact trying to win ring 5 for the core. Then Draymond leaves. They have so many young guys that they don’t need to trade Draymond for anyone and bring in salary.
Or Draymond opts out and signs for a longer term at a discount.
$500 million is a whopper of a bill for that 2023-2024 roster.
It’s basically the same math with a little bit more money. These are all extensions tacked on to this current season so it all starts 23-24 (I think.)
So if you compare this coming season right now with next year, Poole gets Wiggins money, Wiggins gets Draymond Green’s discount money, and the year after, James Wiseman gets Klay Thompson’s money.
Sounds like a good plan to me, they just have to figure out if they can win without Draymond Green’s toughness and defense and pick and rolls etc.
Yeah, I agree, but just thinking in terms of MLB or NFL money, it seems insane. Almost $200 million more than the highest MLB payrolls and almost $300 million more than the NFL salary cap.
Good for Lacob in spending and good for Warriors fans.
Everyone is staying if they want to stay – there is no ceiling on GSW’s luxury tax – titles mean more, as it should be.
Thank you so much Wiggins for believing in the team and giving home discount !!!! This is fantastic news !!!!
It was really a no brainer to sign BOTH Poole amd Wiggins. WHY? Because they are not only good, but they are young and tradable assets. This is the part that a lot of fans dont seem to understand. Finally, both of them can create their own shots which is invaluable.
O.k. as a lifetime warriors fan….how do they do this???? I’m not a capologist, but….omg! light years ahead! omg!
Money, some keen drafting and bird rights. Perhaps Larry should get a small nominal cut, or one of those steaks on the house at least
that is precise, cap.
the combination of quality drafting and the use of bird rights are critical (the two things allow them to significantly and constantly exceed the cap), but the big answer as to how they do it (the light years ahead part) is definitely the money/willingness to shell out the luxury tax payments to the league; nearly all the other teams avoid the tax like the plague (maybe that’s no longer a useful expression?) and then benefit in sharing in the big pot collected from those pitching in!
well said, 72
Nice week for GSW that’s only getting started
I’ll purposely be tuning in 10 mins late Tuesday night as that ceremony surely will drift over the time allotment into tip time
Good luck tuesday. I look forward to watching both teams. Lakers should be in good shape this year long as they stay healthy.
Whew, wish I shared your optimism Gary
It could get rough, really rough over here and early w the schedule
If it does I hope they have the wisdom to pack it in and leave 24′ and beyond’s asset bank (ledge +draft capital) unadulterated
I agree about Draymond as well as Klay Thompson
Draymond for Collins or Sabonis/ Barnes + Mitchell
Klay Thompson for Harris + Wagner SF , Magic may have to TRoss to make the deal work financially
Steph has already clearly stated that he, Klay, and Draymond are a “package deal.”
Steph is signed for 3+ more years, he isn’t going anywhere
Klay is gone for Turner + Duarte
Draymond for Collins.
Warriors save $23 Million this year + ($130 Million in taxes).
Next year in 2023/24 save enough monies to afford $22 Million increase for Poole. And have a Luxury Tax of $25 Million plus penalties.
Just stop
What a silly response. Draymond for Collins or Capela is a great deal, and saves monies for the Warriors.
Klay to the Pacers or Magic is a reasonable scenario. These players are 32+ years in age.
Time to face the future and receive value. Draymond is toxic.
I think Poole was an overpay, and Wiggins is reasonable. Wiggins shoe deal with Peake, gives this young man, 27- Salary and Endorsements by the end of the contract worth $500 Million+
Iggy will be gone next year and J Michael Green will be gone next year, with two more young players combined with a projected Luxury Tax next year of $165 Million and team salaries of $185 Million.
Instead of $500 Million Tax Bill , the tax bill would be $300 Million including salaries.
Poole scoring will replace Klay, though he will work on Defense.
Collins defense is definitely not Draymond but his rebounding and scoring will balance the vertically challenged and injury prone Green.
The Center of Myles Turner will assist on defense. Wiseman and Looney will be the backup Center and Looney as PF.
Other than last year where does Draymond has injury history?
Would rather have Collins or Sabonis than Draymond, especially Sabonis. He’s so much better than Draymond at this point in Dray’s career it’s not even funny.
Vivek, the owner of the Kings might bite . Sabonis for Draymond. I prefer Collins because of Age and 4 years signed contract starting this year.
Sabonis couldn’t defend a wet paper bag.
Lol – clearly you don’t understand Draymond’s playmaking and defense are critical to GSW’s success.
Finally a big extension that is clear value. Not that all the others have been bad, but this is very solid for a very good two-way player.
Wiggins have a big shoe deal and he knows the value of being part of an excellent organization that believes in his game. So happy he stay in GS. Poole had a great year but I dont believe he deserves that amount of money…hope all the incentives are based on defense and will be very happy if he demonstrates that it was a good deal. Draymond is a very valuable player and he will always play hard, specially this year that can be the one to obtain a good contract
Poole would have been maxed out by a team like Orlando. It would have been smarter to do it sooner and for less. Market got bigger waiting on it
If the estimate of $700,000,000. revenue for the Warriors in 2022 comes true [and the salary cap balloons in ’24] that $500,000,000. in salaries and penalties doesn’t seem quite as crazy…though being a working stiff I still shudder at the existence of billionaires running-and ruining-the world.
Wiggins gave them discount and the Warriors gave him years. Under contract including this one coming up for the next five. Nice security for Andrew.
GSW fan here. I think that the Wiggins deal is great for the Warriors and the Poole deal is solid and represents his market value. Poole is a creative shot maker, and offensive creator. And is a battle-tested killer.
These ridiculous luxury tax payments on home grown and team drafted players are wrong. Fans love continuity and teams should be rewarded (not penalized) for drafting and developing star players. They should be able to pay them their market value. Plus, the league benefits from “dynasties”. Ratings are higher, merch sales are higher, etc.
Longer term, I think Klay (and eventually Steph) will take less (like Tim Duncan and Tom Brady) to help keep the team competitive. As for Draymond, not sure. He might think he can win DPOY and get the Super Max.
Market value ??????? you a stock broker. Wiggins market value is TWICE what Pooles is. Poole doesn’t play D. Thats half the game.
Fact you offer Wiggins LESS money than Poole. Is the most disrespectful act you can make. Then you actually let him sign for less money. Only means more disrespect.
Wiggins is a FOOL for signing it. And taking it full throttle from Warriors. This will not go over well here. And especially with other players around the NBA. Poole is a marked man. Guy suxx ……. He couldn’t break most teams rotation. GS are fools to pay him. This is worse than Isiah giving away Dolan money.
Wiggins didn’t have to sign. So why did he? He’s got less of an ego than you do.
Poole is what wannabees here consider ballers. Throw up a couple long shots. With No One covering you. And now you are a shooter. Get looks cause you got three other real players next to you. And now you are a baller. Poole cant even spell D. Let alone play it. Wiggins is a fool for staying in GS. This will not end well.
Green, Klay, Curry, Looney, Iggy all know Poole is not half the player Wiggins is. You think Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody wont too. This will not end well in GS.
Wiggins cone to NY. Where you will get your proper respect. And the respect of the biggest fan base in the World.
You speaking for players just blows my mind. Who the f are you? You hang out with these dudes? Or wait let me guess you get all your info from TMZ right? You’re a joke. Get off this. You have not credibility here at all and probably no where else. Stick to NY stay off my lawn
I’ve often been compared to the late great Jimmy
Foxx (cool, calm and collected at all times) but this has me popping wood.
So Dray is around for another season. Then he can decide if he will accept his true $ value or end up somewhere else. 3/30 is about all I think hes worth 2 yrs from now. With inflated contracts maybe 3/40.
Just a thought on this luxury tax.. All but Wiggins is home grown of their big contracts. Why not only tax on the dollar value for players not drafted by the team?
Like tax them for all the salary of players that were acquired via trade or FA only. Versus penalizing for paying your home grown talent.
If you have a supermax and max contracts you’re going to go over the luxury eventually if you draft well. Seems counterintuitive, like you are more apt to let dudes walk.
And throw in if a guy leaves and comes back he doesnt count as ‘drafted’ like if it’s a vet min dude who comes back after being on another team and you’re over the tax and he wa originally drafted by you he goes toward the luxury.
And “drafted” means who actually drafted them not this stupid well the Hornets actually drafted Kobe nonsense.
I like your proposal but I personally think the tax break should extend to any team resigning a player with bird rights. The league wants stars to stay on their teams but they also want parity.
If Lacob he wants to be the first to pay a billion in taxes, let him – after all, his team is light years away than the rest of the league.
It won’t matter anyway. Assuming decent health holds up (unlike last season) for the relevant WEST teams, the WARRIORS wont repeat this season.
Ha ha, the Warriors are clearly the best team in the west.
If you think Andrew is happy about his extension, just ask,
MRS WIGGINS !!
