If he was negatively affected by the leak of the video of teammate Draymond Green punching him in practice, Warriors guard Jordan Poole certainly didn’t show it on Sunday, as he poured in 25 points with six assists in just 23 minutes vs. the Lakers. According to head coach Steve Kerr, that performance illustrated why the team didn’t consider requiring Poole to take any time off following last Wednesday’s altercation.
“There’s a reason Jordan is who he is right now,” Kerr said, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic. “Especially considering where he was coming out of Michigan, a late first-round pick, struggling his first few months in the league. There’s a reason he’s in this position, about to sign a big extension, hopefully. He’s just tough. He’s mentally tough and physically tough and ultra confident in his game.”
After suggesting that Poole could be “about to sign a big extension,” Kerr later acknowledged that it remains to be seen whether the Warriors will work out a new deal with the 23-year-old in the next week. Still, it certainly sounds like a long-term extension is in play for Poole. If the two sides don’t reach an agreement by the October 17 deadline, the fourth-year guard will become a restricted free agent in 2023.
Here’s more from around the Western Conference:
- With both stars healthy again, Clippers forward Paul George is happy to play second fiddle to former Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard on offense this season, writes Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN. “Everybody says, ‘Kawhi (and) you are 1 and 1, (or) 1A, 1B,'” George said. “I’ll publicly say, I’m the 2. Kawhi’s the 1, I’m the 2. So that part we nipped in the bud. Like there’s no ego when it comes to that.”
- Spurs big man Zach Collins has entered the concussion protocol, tweets Michael C. Wright of NBA.com. Collins won’t travel to Utah for Tuesday’s game and his status for the Spurs’ preseason finale on Thursday vs. Oklahoma City is up in the air.
- Even though John Hollinger of The Athletic thinks the Pelicans‘ decision to extend CJ McCollum “feels like a double-down on an iffy bet against Father Time,” he likes the team’s potential to take a major step forward in 2022/23. Hollinger projects a 48-34 record and a sixth-place finish in the West, writing that New Orleans could realistically get to 55 wins if Zion Williamson stays healthy and “everything clicks.”
Poole currently playing on 4 yrs 10M contract is about to get rewarded that will change he and his family’s lives for generations to come. They all have sacrificed and worked so hard for this day to come, and Draymond decides to take the celebration and limelight away from them because he was going through personal problems. Lame. There is simply no justification whatsoever especially from an 11 yr megamillion veteran.
Smart people signs extension
Nothing is predictable
For Poole
It would be better to sign $80 million contract than nothing
Jordan Poole will get much more $$ from a team with cap room next summer than 80. I don’t think he’s up for taking a discount from the Warriors like most of the other home grown guys did, except for Harrison Barnes. In fact he clipped out that Tyler Hero contract headline and put it in his wallet as a reminder of the good things to come his way.
The market’s now $25-30 million per season for someone of his caliber. He shouldn’t sign for anything less. He needs the money far more than Joe Lacob.
I agree, his negotiations need to start at 4/100 on Warriors side and 4/130 on Poole’s side. I’d say it should settle at 4/116. Maybe 4/108 if he takes the secured bag discount.
This is an absolutely ridiculous statement.
I think that 4/130 is a starting point for Poole. The Warriors should be happy with that. In addition to his creativity, stats, etc, Poole is a battle-tested playoff killer. See his buzzer beaters in NBA finals that helped to shift or maintain the momentum of the series.
GSW is no way going to let him walk and he will either get extended or they will go through the RFA process. Extending is important for their culture and uncertainty can be corrosive so I hope that gets done in the coming days.
I’m all for Jordan Poole signing long-term but the Warriors aren’t. They’re not going to give 30 plus million dollars a year to a guy coming off the bench. No way.
And it’s a fact he will not sign for a discount after seeing Tyler Hero’s money. He is on The Fast Track out of here AFTER they win another championship LOL.
Hes horrendous on defense also. Not worth more than 4 years 80 million.
Herro is horrendous on defense, is also a 6th man, and was much worse in the playoffs last season., and he signed for $120 mil plus incentives.
FYI, you’re not in charge of what a player is worth.
Herro was hurt during the playoffs last year, to be fair.
Herro was a overpay which is why pat riley should ride off into the sunset fyi.
@Gary
I think they end up at agreeing to about $28-30 mil/yr. Because they know he will get more as a RFA and Poole wants to stay.
NBA is Ok, you may very well be right. You know about as much as I do, probably more, lol. I Just don’t think the Warriors go that far $$ with him.
I know not everyone agrees but he does not have a complete enough game for the Warriors to go that far with him. As a lead guard taking over when Curry retires, that’s not happening for three or four years in my opinion. Plus Poole does not quite have the vision of a true point guard.
He’s extremely talented yes, great handles, quickness, long range shooting, creativity, and all the rest of it. He’s amazing to be honest. But he will get his money elsewhere next summer.
It will be fun to see how it plays out. As I’ve said this summer I think the Warriors are looking to kick the can down the road with big money and relying on Ryan Rollins to fill the Jordan Poole role.
If the Warriors want Poole for the next couple years they need an extension done before the deadline. Someone will offer him way too much in the off-season
I feel like these are the “birth pains” of the Warriors letting Draymond Green walk after this year.
As they should. He’s already talking about max extension. He’s already begun his declining years, and soon his antics won’t be worth the trouble.
It’s going to be tough to let him go though. He’s been a leader and brings a toughness element to the team they won’t have without him. Maybe they’ll squeeze one more title out of him this year, and then it’s time to cut ties before he fades. Because there’s no way on earth I’m giving him a max contract.
Green has a bad back. He may have 2 or 3 years left and then probably on injury for most of the year. Somebody you wouldn’t max out. The person that will get the contract is Wiggins.
Wiggins doesn’t want to be there though, he has stated he still is mad at the front office for making him get vaccinated. I’m guessing that money/contract goes to a Wiseman extension. Kuminga and Moody also can get extensions.
@A’sfan
“he has stated he still is mad at the front office for making him get vaccinated.”
You’re wrong, he never said that – why make stuff up? Wiggins LOVES being a Warrior, and is perfect in his role on the team.
Lyman Bostock, well said !!
DirtyDra and PollutedPoole ….. life always shows its true colors. Yawn
Zion comes to play this could be a special yr for NO. I definitely sign CJ. He’s the vet they need.
Knicks stink…..life always shows its true colors. Yawn
I don’t care what he gets, I want Jordan Poole on the Golden State Warriors for at least the next four years.
