NBA commissioner Adam Silver and Kyrie Irving met this morning in New York and they had a productive and understanding visit, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets.
How the meeting might impact Irving’s suspension by the Nets, and whether the league might take any action, remains to be seen. The franchise grounded its star guard for a minimum of five games after he promoted on his Twitter account a film that has been denounced as antisemitic. The Nets have reportedly asked Irving to meet six requirements before lifting the suspension.
Silver issued a statement last week about Irving’s “reckless decision” and failure to offer an “unqualified apology” denouncing the “vile and harmful content contained in the film he chose to publicize.” Irving eventually deleted the tweet and apologized after being suspended.
Prior to the meeting, one report suggested that Irving may never wear a Brooklyn uniform again.
Can’t believe all the talk about Silver being this strong and dynamic commissioner. He’s looked weak a number of times in his tenure. It’s easy to take stances on issues most believe in. Especially with this Kyrie thing he’s been run over by the players union.
It’s a players league to begin with and everyone collecting money off the nba is thriving like never before today
I’d like him to be more stern as well ( not in this matter ) but he’d really put himself out on an island if he did upsetting pretty much everyone
Tough job he”s got , he’s accountable to so many different
parties and he can’t scratch everyone’s back all at once
He’s kinda just doing what his job descripton entails ( pleasing players abd lining the pockets of owners )
I travel to Vegas every summer and regularly interact with the NBA players. Overall, they are a great bunch of guys. However, as a Jew who has experienced anti-Semitism off and on through the years, I can’t believe the League has downplayed the event. It does seem that anti-Semitism is almost an “accepted” reality, which is pretty scary. I’m not in favour of cancelling players, but their needs to be more accountability here.
Wow what an interesting life you lead that sounds fun. What do you think would be an acceptable outcome for Kyrie in regards to accountability?
Lol. Not really an interesting life. Just love Summer League. As for accountability – tbh: I’m not sure. It just doesn’t feel like the League took this seriously on day 1. By letting it linger, it showed that the League was willing to allow it – not condemn it. Now that they have acted, the punishment doesn’t seem strong enough. It reminds me a bit of when Ilan Omar made anti-Semitic statement and used jewish tropes. There really was no condemnation. So most people considered it acceptable.
NYC is not letting this go away. Jewish community there won’t allow it. I’m pretty sure Kyrie is gone. Imo he did this so he could leave. He’s done in NY. LA is only place for him now. Since he could save their season. NBA would love that.
How has the league or the media/society downplayed this event? It’s covered ad nauseum on every media channel and has had several stories posted on this site. They suspended him, fined him, made him donate money, and now he has to meet with local leaders before he can play. I can see th4 argument they should have acted sooner, but I doubt anybody, including himself, even watched that garbage he posted or even understood it.
I’m wondering why Amazon or whoever gets a pass for hosting that stuff, along with all other types of racist drivel 9not just anti-semite) but I digress
Kyrie loves being drama queen, ruins Nets season once again…. Sean Marks and Nets fell for Kyrie once agaim in the offseason instead of trading him away…..
NOW, they should never let him play again for the Nets.
No the Nets ruined the Nets season. It was going down the drain with or without kyrie.
And one of the idiot moves the Nets made was signing and never trading that goof Kyrie.
Is this step one of the league and the team softening their stance on Kyrie?
So KD and Kyrie turned down Knicks for this. Remember when all the genius clowns here. Couldn’t stop hating on Knicks for not signing them. I told you then. I’ll remind you Again. We don’t want no part of them. We need to rebuild. So look at us now.
espn wannabees that just copy and paste. I don’t get why any team would want Kyrie.
Nobody, including you, saw him getting this crazy. They have made the postseason almost every year since they arrived and were expected to go very deep year. Say what you will about Kyrie but don’t tell me that bwoy can’t ball.
Flat earth was silly but harmless, this stuff was out of the blue
