The Knicks have exhibited a willingness to discuss guards Immanuel Quickley and Derrick Rose in trade talks in the early part of the 2022/23 season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, who says the team is considering ways to clear a logjam in its backcourt.
Ian Begley of SNY.tv reported last week that the Knicks had received some inquiries on Quickley, with teams around the NBA viewing New York’s crowded rotation as something the club will want to address sooner or later. Following up on The Athletic’s report today, Begley confirms that there have been some “cursory” trade conversations involving Rose as well (Twitter links).
Sources tell Begley that the Knicks have sought draft compensation as part of the return in some of their trade discussions involving the two guards.
Following Jalen Brunson‘s arrival, both Quickley and Rose are averaging fewer minutes per game than they did last season. Rose’s drop-off has been far more substantial — after averaging 25.8 minutes per game in his first 61 appearances with New York, he has logged just 13.5 MPG this season through 15 contests. Quickley is averaging 22.1 MPG, a slight dip from last season’s 23.1 MPG.
Besides having fewer minutes available for Quickley and Rose, the Knicks have also removed shooting guards Quentin Grimes and Evan Fournier from their rotation entirely within the last week.
Rose is on a de facto expiring contract, earning approximately $14.5MM this season with a $15.6MM team option for 2023/24. Quickley, meanwhile, is in the third season of his four-year rookie deal and has a modest cap hit of just $2.3MM. He’ll become extension-eligible in the 2023 offseason and will earn $4.2MM next season.
Fournier will cost to liquidate, but I think the Grimes/Rose package is competitive if a guy of Crowder’s caliber is the target.
Dude they said no to the Mitchell trade because they wanted to keep grimes. Why would they trade him now if he’s so valuable
Let’s keep this simple. I think both teams do this one. Tobias Harris and heavily protected 1st for Randle/Fournier and 2nd (maybe 2)
Philly gets shooter and upgrade from Tobias in their system. Plus gain more tradeable contract.
Tobias would bring nice versatility off bench as 3 or 4. We get off Randle $ year sooner and clear path for Obi to start and relieve some of logjam in backcourt. Plus a 1st down line..if they prefer Rose over Fournier I’m still in…Philly is hard cap so we’d receive another player with a contract of at least 1.9 million
Cue the Knicks fans expecting IQ & Rose for SGA. (But not with picks, that would be an over pay) lol.
Quickly has small value, as does Grimes, Toppin and Cam. All others would either be off limits or negative value based on contracts. They aren’t going to get much of a player without farming a lot of picks. Should’ve pushed for Mitchell.
SHHHH!! You’re making too much sense!
“Cue the Knicks fans expecting IQ & Rose for SGA. lol.”
Cue the weird Knicks haters inventing strawmen to argue against. lol.
@rct no hate here, I love it when the news is full of Knicks rumours that never happen.
And fans claiming the moves they do make were good decisions. like trading out of the lottery for next to nothing, or over paying for Bruson, or pretty much telling the world Mitchell was a done deal until they refused to pay what he was worth. Great calls. But again no hate, just love hearing the delusions that appear, why not start the talks of Zion for Randle, or Ja for Rose. Silly but not far from what we hear 24/7 on here from 3 specific teams.
So please keep the ice cold takes coming. And I’ll keep enjoying. (If knicks change their ways completely and actually make a good move, I’ll praise them, but until then keep it coming).
True genius ……,
Asking price for Mitchell way too high not worth more mortgaging the future. Grimes is untouchable need to keep him and develop him let their draft picks go in the draft not for free agents. Continue to build a team through the draft use your draft picks to move up in the draft
How was his asking price too high? Lauri, Sexton & Agbaji with 3 picks and 2 swaps?
Shams claimed Knicks offered Obi, Fournier and 5 picks(3 protected/swaps). Aingie only wanted IQ to sweeten the pot. But that was apparently an overpay, three month later Knicks are shopping Quickly and won’t get much back.
And I agree about Grimes or Cam or quickly or Toppin!! but Thibs don’t want them. and you talk of trading up, all we heard before the draft was that Knicks were gonna trade up for Ivey(which they could have done) it never happened and they gave up an entire draft for nothing. This is my frustration with them!!
Lakers?
Oddly enough Quickley/Rose are both exactly who GSW needs, as they are playing some scrubs off the street they signed on opening night named “anthony lamb” and “ty jerome” who are both -8 million defenders. At least Quickley and Rose are ACTUAL NBA players, not g leaguers or euro league-ceiling’d guys.
How do you expect them to absorb Rose’ $14.5 million?? Again you never say anything close to logical
So glad they didn’t “overpay” for Spida. Being a treadmill team holding a gaggle of picks that would be SURPRISING if they hit on a transformational/difference maker/franchise caliber player.. that’s the strategy. Maximizing the value of picks if they are so important…? Who does that?
Let’s get out there and make either the play-in, or better yet…first round exit. Yeah…Show. Progress.
Just like the professional poker player who gets invited to play a tourney at the Riviera, but instead opts for the slot machines.
The Knicks FO are some shrewd folks man..
Lol, shrewd is one word. I wouldn’t say it but okay. Love seeing comments like this, when they’re being serious at least.
If it’s not a Knicks fan, it’s a Lakers or Warriors fan claiming their FO are going get someone we all know they won’t.
“If it’s not a Knicks fan, it’s a Lakers or Warriors fan claiming their FO are going get someone we all know they won’t.”
Because if there’s one thing Knicks fans are known for, it’s… thinking their FO is smart? Have you ever met a Knicks fan, bro? They’re the most critical fans on earth. They hate ownership and the FO.
@rct again, as I said above……(clearly ruffled your feathers).
Yes and If you go onto any thread with any slither of Knicks news you’ll see exactly what I have just said. Plain as day!!!. Im not lying am I?
The most said thing I’ve seen this season from Knicks fans. “Good call We dodged a bullet not overpaying for Mitchell”. Did they though? Let alone every other nonsense statement.
And don’t get me wrong true stat hungry, every game watching fans aren’t deluded. Can see Thibs and Perry are ruining the franchise and leaving the good young talent at the kiddie table. But if you’re one of them you’re a rare breed!!!! For every 1 hot or even Luke warm take, it’s drowned out by the 40 silly homer comments. As I said, it’s 3 teams with the same issues.
If a player asks for a request these days. All we see is Knicks, Lakers and Warriors fans flood it with silly comments. Forgive me for finding them funny and having a little fun at their expense.
Ruining the franchise ….
You mean the 2020-21 coach of the yr.
Who coached a team with no center in 2022-21. And no PG and still managed 37 wins. With no Randle. Having his emotional yr. And this yr finally a PG and starting his third yr. Of which they had best drafting in 20 yrs. That’s ruining it. It’s amazing how much Knick haters know. About a team they don’t watch. Or know any actual facts about.
I think I am yes, all rook 2nd in IQ apparently getting shipped instead of nurtured, 8th pick in 20 draft, a known paint monster being starved of mins and forced to play 3pt shooting in his rook year in Toppin messing up his progress. A steal of a trade getting reddish to not play him, then have to after being called out. The man won’t play young guys or adapt from HIS vision. You’re deluded dude, between RJ Toppin Cam and IQ you could have a hugely promising core!!! But nope he said no so that’s that.
And are we talking about the same draft?! Trading out of the draft for absolutely no reason and no return? Clearly a good draft. If you’re gassing about Bruson they didn’t have to ruin a draft to get him?!
Knicks with the positions they’ve been in in recent memory have dropped the ball on multiple occasions. If the get to the play in they’ll be lucky, but that’s their ceiling. RJ is a really good player. But Randle and Bruson are mediocre.
I have no hate, I feel sorry for the fans bro, haters are usually jealous to which Knicks have nothing to be envious about!! Apart from a few good young guys that they’ll let go for low. It just baffles me how they can get it wrong so often, then guys like you acting like Thibs is a god or it was tactical genius to miss out on Mitchell. Or they’re anything other than what we all know they are, in probably the best location in the country for players and front office, to constantly drop the ball.
coach thibodaux! Isn’t a real offensive head coach, needs an OC To make this team go. Let him stick to what he knows defense. Young talent needs to play more.
IQ is not a starter in this L, Dude … He’s best as the third guard. And that’s what he’s been nurtured to do. If you actually watched gms you might know that. Have you been in this country the last two yrs. Cause we have a starting PF and now a starting PG. Look them up and catch up. So you can make sense. Now personally I’m all for starting Obi and trading Randle. Only been saying it for two yrs now.
Players have to earn mins on a Thibs team. Doesn’t mean they are not being developed. Obi has come a long way since rookie yr. As has Quickley, Grimes, Mitch, Sims and McBride. All low first rd picks or 2nd rd picks. In two yrs they have done this. Go take a course on drafting talent. Cause you got NON vision.
The guy spent his first year playing the same level as Maxey, but Thibs played his anti young card and went all in on an over the hill Rose. No one knows what his ceiling is because he doesn’t get the chance. The dude had a 34 pointer in his rookie season, then went back to the bench the next game for a good 10 mins!!! Earn mins? If your team isn’t performing, you take chances, the kid is declining year on year from this incredible coach, nurtured my a**!!
Feels like we’re flogging a dead horse, Congrats, you have an overrated Randle hogging the ball for a strong 20 on below average FG% to go along with his attitude. You yourself has shouted every chance you get about moving him!! The guys a 3rd or lower on a good team, and we both know it.
Oh and an average undersized PG putting up less than 20 and a piss poor excuse for a 3pt shot. Between those two you’re in a really good position to fight for the play in. Behind Celtics, Bucks, Miami, Cavs, Raps, Hawks, Philly, Bulls. Even the damn Nets!! YAY. A good coach would move rose and Keep Quickly. I agree he was worth the risk, but not for that contract.
Look I actually respected your takes in the past, but to even try to defend any of the Knicks dumpster fire that is an organisation right now and go in on the petty insults is laughable. I get defend your team, but hey there’s a line. My teams the worst in the league but you don’t see me claiming anything otherwise!!
@ Knick Al:
“Who coached a team with no center in 2022-21.” “With no Randle”
Robinson played 7 games that season, as did Randle.
“And no PG and still managed 37 wins.”
PG Quickley played 78 games. 37 wins was underachieving.
Carry on!
Noel was hurt too. So no rim protection. We went from a top D team to one of worst. Quickley is not a real PG. Just compare him to Jalen. He’s a nice talent. But is not going to lead them to wins in his second yr. No Rose to help either. Now saying all that.
Randle to me was biggest reason. He’s a drama Queen. Who was more focused on his feelings. Than his commitment to his team. Imo Thibs is too loyal to Randle. It will be his downfall if not careful. Amazing to me how Knicks are suppose to rebuild and win in two yrs. When Thunder are in yr 10 of rebuild. Magic in yr 11, Sixers were in the process for six yrs. Bullls were still trying since MJ left. Till Thibs came along.. Can we atleast have 4-5 yrs. Thibs might not be the savior. But he’s the right guy for the job. He’s a native and has worked here under JVG. He knows who we are and what we want from Knicks.
Evan Fouriner, Immanuel Quickly and a first round pick for Josh Richardson and Doug McDermott
Knicks then move Barrett to SG and promote McDermott to SF. He gives you a three point specialist to space the floor better in that starters group I think that’s what they need. Then off the bench JRich will play with DRose which will be a solid backcourt bench duo.
In all knicks line up
Brunson Barrett McDermott Randle Robinson
DRose JRich Reddish Toppin Hartenstein
McBride Grimes Keels and Sims for rotational minutes
For the spurs it’s mainly the pick but also Quickly is a nice addition for the rebuild and Evan Fouriner seems like he would serve well as a vet for Pop on this team. Heaps of experience in the league and internationally with a good all round skill set. Quickly vs Jones for the starting point guard spot would be a good little battle.
Why ?
They are seeking draft capital, it’s in the article
2023 isn’t going to be their year , and that’s fine
Must’ve been an update cause I didn’t see that at first.
Don’t think DRose or Quick get them much draft capital in return and personal would be a better target. Doug is one of the best shooters and JRich is having a really solid year.
Both would be good additions for this year and the future
Lakers should go ahead and try and add D-Rose to their stable of Chicago natives. Don’t know if anything on the Laker roster can make that happen. Knicks would have to do it for Derrick, who lives in Los Angeles.
Why tho ? The lakers are already having the same problem as Ny with toooo many guards no wings –
Neither team will be buyers this year ; and that’s fine
The NY Knicks should trade the whole team for picks. That team sucks and is not fun to watch at all.
Rose $14
Quickly $2
Plus
Randle $23 million
For Russ $47
Take IQ out and toss in Fournier. Take crap back to even out the dollars. IQ could be useful in another deal to acquire picks.
Terrible idea! Must be a Lakers fan!
So The Athletic got answers …… sounds like fungus to me.
Jalen Is here to stay. His contract and play (33 mins). Is a dead giveaway. Even the geniuses here can see that. So of course the guards will be available. But Knicks are interested in a starter or star player. Didn’t pull the trigger on DM. So they will pull the trigger come Jan 15.
Rose and Quickley can be part of that. I’d say, and I’ve been saying it since the season started. Randle, Fournier. Quickley, Rose, Mitch are all in play for a trade. Plus our abundance of picks.
Why are NON Knick fans interested in who we trade. All you Nons. Need to understand the importance of Dolan keeping his distance from this FO and coach. Best thing he will ever do. Since daddy gave him MSG, Knicks, Rangers. Is see this thing thru. Jan 15 is Knicks rebirth day. Be around to hate, please.
Knicks haven’t won a playoff series since 2013. What trade are they going to make on January 15th that will mean a rebirth?
The trade you will hate. Be around.
They could just ask me to fix this. I’m still waiting for a call. I can see a few scenarios happening. I’d say keep an eye on young vets who may want out. All FA signings and trades made. Can be traded on that day. Knicks were in on DM. Glad they didn’t do it. But they will do it on Jan 15. We’re not sitting on these picks like Thunder. Jalen was the first move. Another one is coming. I guarantee it.
the same quickley they didnt trade for spida??? lmfaoo
Yeah that must be it ……….. you 10 yrs old
How so?
I root for all the Knicks playera and this team. Thibodeau is a capable, Solid coach. He started the turnaround from league basement to 4th seed (Even if PO were underwhelming), to play-in/lower seed playoff conversation.
While not being a “modern” coach, Thibs has Solid principles and team developing habits, emphasizing building a team culture, with defense and minutes having to be earned. Importancebof player development through training, work ethic and continuity, which wey may not see right now, but I think Will yield results in the future (McBride, Grimes, Sims). Accountability and respect are important un a team culture. That’s why a guy like Cam really struggled to see the floor until recently. And I don’t disagree with that.
Brunson is a great signing.
The young players Skillset seem.suited to a higher paced team (McBride, rim-runners Obi and Sims, Quickly as a microwave bench scorer a la lou-will), which needs a playmaking PG, which Brunson fits.
That would be the next Big step, barring Big trades.
