The salaries for players in the NBA G League will increase again for the 2022/23 season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, who reports (via Twitter) that players who spend the season in the NBAGL will earn $40,500.
As we reported last fall, the G League’s annual salary rose from $35K to $37K for the 2021/22 season, so it has now increased by more than 15% in the last two seasons and is over $40K for the first time. NBAGL players formed a union in 2020, which has given them more leverage to negotiate those pay bumps.
Unlike in the NBA, the G League pays a flat base salary to all players, so there’s no gap between minimum and maximum salaries or anything in between. However, there are ways for players in the G League to earn more than $40,500.
Players who signed Exhibit 10 contracts with NBA teams during the offseason or preseason with an eye toward joining that team’s G League affiliate will receive bonuses worth up to $50K, depending on the specific terms of their contract. That could push a G League player’s earnings up over $90K for the ’22/23 season.
Additionally, players who are on two-way contracts will earn flat salaries of $508,891 (half of the NBA’s rookie minimum), even if they spend most of the season in the G League. Players on NBA rosters who are assigned to the G League will earn their full NBA salaries, rather than the NBAGL rate.
Details on the G League’s format and schedule for 2022/23 can be found here, while this year’s NBAGL draft results are right here.
Even then, all G-Leaguers should be making at least $75K, this is a first step but in all USA jobs, we have to stop acting like salaries starting with 3’s 4’s and 5’s are anything but slave labor wages.
Its pretty much impossible to live in a city nowdays making less than $65K, and that’s a livable wage, not even a thriving one. When are the CEO’s and money grubbers at the top FINALLY going to acknowledge how badly EVERYONE is getting paid?
Everyone in America deserves $50K a year to live in America, off the jump, for free, period. If you disagree with this, then you are simply getting in the way of progress and are totally useless to society and only contribute to the systemic murdering of the poor.
I agree with you, on all points but the G-League season is 5 months long. As mentioned in the article, guys on an Exhibit 10 make 90k for those 5 months.
They are still underpaid, but the teams also provide housing and a per diem for those 5 months. Not good for someone with a family, but for a 19-20 old, not a bad gig.
With all that said…you’re right, it’s still way too low.
That reply is not factual, it’s merely ideological. $65k doesn’t work in some cities with a high cost of living, but it’s more than enough in most places.
Many people, including me, get by just fine on less than that supporting a family of four, although I’ll never sell myself short just for employment.
“When are the CEO’s and money grubbers at the top FINALLY going to acknowledge how badly EVERYONE is getting paid?”
Historically speaking…never.
Annual lease for 1 bed apartment near Chase Center is $60K
Salary at $40K is against the Law? After payroll tax is $25K?
Hourly rate at $19 is against minimum wage law?
Their housing is paid for. It’s a 5 month season.
No, paying someone 40k and giving them housing for 5 months is not against the law.
Holy crow.
And a short season means they are free to work additional jobs the rest of the year, although it’s understood that they need to keep their fitness and athletic skill at a high level. But there are enough hours in a week to work and work out.
