The temperature is rising on Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau‘s seat after Sunday’s blowout loss to the Thunder, in which New York gave up 145 points at home, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv. The Knicks’ effort has been lacking multiple times in the young season, leading to questions about Thibodeau’s ability to get through to his team, Begley writes.
“I thought (Sunday) was just a readiness (issue). We just weren’t ready,” Evan Fournier said. “Noon game, whatever. I don’t know. But lack of intensity, just not doing what we’re supposed to.”
After Thibodeau led the Knicks to the East’s No. 4 seed in 2020/21 with a 41-31 record and won Coach of the Year, the team faltered in his second season, finishing with a 37-45 record.
According to Begley, owner James Dolan gave president Leon Rose permission to decide Thibodeau’s fate just before the All-Star break last season after the Knicks blew a 28-point lead to a Nets team playing without Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. Obviously, Rose decided to retain Thibodeau, but it put his future performance under more scrutiny.
At 6-7 thus far in 2022/23, New York’s record isn’t egregious relative to external expectations, but the Knicks had higher hopes entering ’22/23 than a possible play-in berth, in part due to moving some draft assets to free up cap space to sign Jalen Brunson to a lucrative contract in free agency (Thibodeau was a proponent of trading for Donovan Mitchell as well, Begley adds). People with knowledge of the situation told Begley in the offseason that the team’s early-season performance would be “critical,” with Thibodeau “under a microscope early on.”
As Begley writes, not all of the Knicks’ struggles are on Thibodeau. They don’t have the most talented roster, and there aren’t many defensive-minded players for a coach with well-known reputation for prioritizing defense.
“The thing that sits with me is the disappointment of losing,” Thibodeau said after Sunday’s loss, per Steve Popper of Newsday (subscriber link). “We have to look at every game and say, ‘OK, what do we have to fix, what do we have to prioritize?’ . . . But I know if we’re relying on trying to outscore people that’s not going to work. Our margin of error is small, we have to play with great intensity on every possession.”
Still, changes are likely to come in some form if the team struggles on its upcoming five-game road trip, whether it be via a trade, in the front office or with Thibodeau being replaced, Begley notes. The Knicks have a brutal schedule over that stretch: road games at Utah, Denver, Golden State, Phoenix and Oklahoma City.
Something feels off with the Knicks, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic. The starters are struggling again, the bench isn’t performing as well as last season, the pieces are ill-fitting and the effort comes and goes. Katz argues the Knicks should make a consolidation trade because they have too many rotation players but not enough standout performers.

I guess there weren’t any grammar mistakes so this guy says it should be on a dif post lol. Do you see why I treat yall with contempt?
Thibs is a great coach. He is definetly not the problem. The problem is that all the guys they signed, wether it be Randle, Fournier, Brunson, Barrett, are all mediocre and wayyyyyyy overpaid. This team just isn’t a contender. I’d say Thibs might be their best coach in the past 20 years. The same people that want Thibs fired also wanted the team to hire Fizdale and Fisher
If he’s a great coach it just goes to show how little coaching matters in the NBA. He’s won 2 playoff games (obv 0 playoff series) in the last 6yrs since leaving Chicago. He’s supposed to a defensive guy yet his team has sucked defensively this yr & last. If it’s not his fault now let’s remember that when he ever has a team that plays well. Maybe Ronnie Brewer, Carlos Boozer & CJ Watson deserved a lil bit of the credit he got for that success in Chicago
I think all your criticisms of Thibs cannot be blamed solely on 1 guy. I like Thibs over many NBA coaches, so I’m not following the Thibs is a terrible coach after just 10 games. It isn’t fair, and I wouldn’t want to be judged that harshly unless we are halfway through, and only won 5 games. Then I start thinking about coaching changes, maybe. If the roster should be winning more, but that isn’t the case in NY. Brunson, Randle, Barrett should be so much better? Fournier? NY is spending money, sort of, because they can. They are still rebuilding, and this isn’t New Orleans.
It’s obv not just 10gms. You’re forgetting that last season happened
That is true how is possible they contract Brunson for $100 millions a small point guard, and not try to get Mitchell in a trade what a mistake.
Thibs has his positives as a coach, but his rigid lineup construction and inconsistent ability to derive defense from his players have combined to really sink the Knicks relative to what they could be. Management hasn’t helped by hiring guys like Fournier and Kemba, neither of whom was a great fit (and Kemba was at the end of his career), but still. Not good.
F I n a l l y
Dude would be a great assistant coach, don’t make him your HC or GM. Somehow never on the same page with personnel folks.
Josh McDaniels of the NBA
Please get rid of Thibs. Though it was only a decade ago that he was a defensive guru who was leading his Bulls teams to the top of the EC, he’s become a relic. His coaching style doesn’t seem to work in the current climate. Look to Mark Jackson as a comparable. Both good coaches, one out of a job for years now, and the other with a declining track record.
No, it isn’t. Just the same nonsensical narratives from source-less reporters. They bring up Dolan’s name because they know he’s the only they can sell as (possibly) stupid enough to even consider firing Thibs. Problem is even Dolan isn’t that stupid.
Thibs is the only person in the NYK organization that has proven to be elite at the job he currently holds. He has to be assessed like anyone else, but it will hopefully be by people who understand the game, and certainly wouldn’t be by 2k’ers, fanboys or third rate reporters (groups that comprise almost all of Thibs’ critics).
LOL – You shouldn’t comment on a game you obviously don’t know anything about. Have you never watched a single game or do you really just don’t have any clue what you’re watching?
Knicks fans can be so embarrassing!
I wasn’t commenting on NBA 2k. I’m assuming that’s your “sport” and your low end reading skills led you to believe I was infringing on your territory. In any event, I’ll stay clear of 2k, if you stay clear of the actual sport of basketball, deal?
Tom Thib Toon
Knicks need to atleast roll the dice and make a trade and give Thibs 1 last chance.
You didn’t back him in paying for Donovan Mitchell but it’s obvious you need more.
They rank 29th in the league for 3 point %
They rank 25th in points allowed per game
That’s the two biggest problem areas but they rank overall pretty decently.
I’d still really like to see them go trade Randle for Cam Johnson and Jae Crowder.
Brunson Barrett Johnson Crowder Robinson
Bench DRose Fouriner Reddish Toppin Hartenstein
Johnson and Crowder both offer better shooting and defence.
CP3 Booker Bridges Randle Ayton
Would be arguably the best starting 5 in the league with a really good head coach in Monty Williams.
Bench could definitely do with some improvement tho
Why?
He sucks, He’s been well paid.
He’s owed nothing.
What do you people think he’s done in his history that’s worth waiting for?
We’re going to lose Obi and Quickley for nothing because Thibs thinks Randle and RJ have to play 35 minutes every single night.
Knicks fans…..
You guys loves him when he joined and helped lead you guys into the playoffs.
The problem with the knicks is always too many chiefs in the kitchen. Always someone be it the owner or the GM, the fans or the president of operations or even some agent that has to put in his two cents and stop guys from doing there job properly.
I agree his loyalty to Randle has been a problem but at the same time up I till this season Randle has been your best player and obviously your going to lean on him more than others. Maybe he needs a bit of a push or some pressure but I think it’s clear and obvious this teams still lacks something and need more if they want to be good. Sacking Thibs more than likely makes this team worse
Randle und Ayton im Frontcourt?
Sorry why should the Suns doing this?
I’ve said a couple times I think Randle would be perfect for the Suns.
Everyone knows it’s Bookers team and CP3 is the right hand man but CP3 is now aging and slowing down and the numbers are falling away. He’s no longer good enough to be a 15+ points per game guy, the defence has fallen away a lot, and there will be more to come.
Randle coming over gives them a clear second scoring option. CP3 can focus more of calling plays and running sets for others which is his best skill. Randle gives you an easy 20 points per game. He also offers some playmaking ability which is unique in a big man’s game so that’s something they can use to their advantage. He can shoot he three ball a little so shouldn’t clog the lane to much. Plus because of his age he would fit in well timeline wise with what they have going on.
Not to mention Crowder wants out and isn’t playing and Johnson is out injured for the next 2 months and he and the team couldn’t agree to terms on an extension. He’s no guarantee to be there next season and Crowder won’t play so in actual fact it’s a really good move for the suns
Wait a minute, 2 years NY fans were ready to put “ Tibs” statue outside the stadium and enshrine him in the HOF. WHAT HAPPENED?
What happened is you’re using a false narrative to setup the phony shock.
Two years ago the Knicks started the season pretty average (had a losing record when they traded for Rose) and had one hell of a heater until the playoffs started.
Yes SOME Knicks fans were ready to annoint Thibs & Leon as masterminds of a successful rebuild – but I know plenty of Knicks fans baffled by Leon’s FO moves that summer & over Thibs’ stringent rotations and demands of 90s/early aughts style hoops with a few 3s thrown in.
Nice try tho
As long as James L. owns that franchise the comments on this and every other NBA chatroom site discussing the Knicks will continue as they have since the early 2000’s.
The names of the Knicks players, coaches, and front office people change – but the same comments have kept coming and will keep coming.
Thibs biggest mistake is being loyal to Randle. You want to know when fools are not on same page.
“I thought (Sunday) was just a readiness (issue). We just weren’t ready,” Evan Fournier said. “Noon game, whatever. I don’t know. But lack of intensity, just not doing what we’re supposed to.”
This from the most unready fool in a Knicks uniform on Sunday. Seems there is a rift in the locker room. It’s starting to show. Randle has to be in the middle of it. He’s not playing D either. Last yr it was “nobody thinks I’m the star here”. 13 gms and cows are letting out gas …….. typical.
The coach is a complete idiot and stories about the problem being players effort are just as bad.
Leon and Thibs have to go now. Thibs because he’s petty and not very bright. Leon because he’s not a leader & has completely bungled what will be his only chance in an NBA front office.
Dolan should give world wide Wes and Bryant control and stop screwing around with agents. They aren’t your friend.
Meh. Who needs Mitchell. We’re good.
The had a good roster and then spent money on guys who did not fit his style
Thibs has a very short shelf life before a franchise needs to move on because he seems to lose locker rooms quickly.
