Lakers big man Anthony Davis will likely undergo an MRI after leaving Friday’s win over Denver due to a right foot injury, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
As McMenamin writes, the injury appeared to occur when Davis went up for a layup against Nuggets center Nikola Jokic and his lower leg collided with Jokic’s leg in midair. A source told ESPN on Friday night that Davis was experiencing discomfort in his foot, but the team is hoping the injury isn’t severe. Head coach Darvin Ham said that Davis had X-rays performed on the foot before leaving the arena.
“I don’t want to speak on it until I know exactly what’s going on,” Ham said after the game. “I’ll know more (Saturday).”
If Davis has to miss some time, it would be an unfortunate turn of events for the Lakers and for the 29-year-old, who has been one of the NBA’s hottest players in recent weeks. In his last 12 full games, he has averaged an eye-popping 35.0 points, 14.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.5 blocks, and 1.3 steals on 64.1% shooting.
Lakers center Thomas Bryant would be in line for a larger role if Davis is forced to the sidelines. Bryant started the third quarter in Davis’ place on Friday and finished the night with a season-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting.
Just as last year it’s going to be the healthy team that survives the West. A couple key guys go down and you won’t make it.
As a side note I truly would like to see the Lakers and Clippers stay healthy and make a little run. Perhaps meet in the conference semi’s or something. Would love to see Kawhi Leonard get to run this year and his sidekick Paul George support him. Longshot I think but I can hope.
Who had Dec 16th in the AD injury pool? Everyone knew he would go down sometime during the year.
I’m surprised Street Clothes went this long.
Lots of injuries, wow! Superstars are great until they get injured. And then you have to find a way to replace their production.
Hopefully, it’s not too bad. But, either way, AD is simply too unreliable health-wise to provide superstar value to a team. How do you build a team around a guy who’s permanently day-to-day? He almost can’t be an essential piece to what they do. Between this situation and Westbrick, I’ve concluded that Ham has a hard job.
So clever using Westbrick, as if his season has been miserable and he doesn’t do anything. Great analysis, can’t wait for more
LOL. I’ll keep it simple (since it’s likely required). I didn’t say, or suggest, that either AD or RW were having miserable seasons or not doing anything. Both situations present coaching challenges.
Basketball fans and Laker fans alike have been using the term Westbrick for at least 2 years. Don’t act like this is the first time you’ve heard it and are appalled by the moniker.
I will give it to the Lakers though for bringing Westbrook Off the Bench and thus maximizing his value as a supreme athlete and defensive disruptor. His stats are pretty good now and he’s effective rather than a liability.
Nice job by the Lakers coaching staff 3 weeks into the season and to the gazillion fans that suggested it in the preseason.
I mean, who honestly didn’t know this was coming?
Anyone who follows hoops hard enough to read and post on this site had to know Davis was going to sustain an injury sooner or later. It stinks, but it’s just how it is. As Charles Barkley calls him .. Anthony “Street Clothes” Davis
Here we go again… Maybe next year, LeBron James
AD hurt again …….. and is water wet.
From the SoftSide of Chicago ……..
seriously I would never want AD on my team.
A real shame for AD, he was having an MVP season so far, let’s hope is nothing serious & doesn’t have to miss time!
